InMay,1951,shewas highlypraisedbythevisitingNewZealandconcert pianist,RichFarrell,and laterinthesameyear,world famousconductor,Sir EugeneGoossensafterhearingPaulineperformoneof herowncompositions,was soimpressedthatherecommendedsheproceedtoSydney,whereshewentinFebruary,1952,tofurtherher studiesunderMr.A.SverjenskyattheStateConservatorium.

Shemaderapidprogress, gainingbrilliantpassesin allherexaminations.Early in1955shewasthewinner oftheLaymanMartinHarrisonandtheA.M.E.B.scholarships.InAugustofthe followingyearshewonboth theBachpianochampionshipandconcertocompetitionsatWollongong.

InSeptember,attheCity ofSydneyeisteddfod,atrio formedbyher(withherself aspianist)wontheChamberMusicconcertsponsored bytheMusicaVivaSociety. Paulineconcludedamemorableyear,1955bygaining boththelicentiatedegree (A.M.E.B.)andtheperformer'sdiplomaoftheConservatorium.

Themoralclaimsprovideaclassicstudyintortuousness.Sincetheeconomicsanctionswereimposed onChinaforheraggressioninKorea,ourpundits argue,theembargoshouldnowbeliftedbecauseno similaractionwastakenagainsttheSovietforher savageryinHungary.Thelogicofthatpositionis notinexorable.Indeedsimplepeoplemightwellask why,ifRussiaisasbadasChina,therightcourse wouldnotbenottotreatChinaasfavourablyas RussiabuttotreatRussiaasunfavourablyasChina. WhethertheChinesesituationisviewedfromthe angleofmoralsorrealism,thefactisthattheCommunistcontrolofthemainlandisinnowaydifferent frompuppetrulerscontrollingmanycountriesin Europeduringthelastworldwar.ThattheRed overlordsinnowayrepresentthetrueinterests, aspirationsandwillofthe600-millionChineseon themainlandisamplydemonstratedbythefact thatalmosteverycityorprovinceinthepastyear hasstagedsomekindofrevolt.Ontheadmissionof ShihLiang,RedMinisterforJustice,74armedrevoltsagainsttheregimeoccurredbetweenJanuary,1954,andMay,1955.Ontheadmissionof MaoTse-tungtheRedshavekilledoff800,000 Chinese.Therealfigureisnearer20-million.But eventheofficialstatisticsmustcastsomedoubton thestrengthoftheRedgripinChina.

Inaddition,itissimplynotrealistictosaythatrecognitionofRedChina(forwhichthetradeproposal isasoftening-upprelude)doesnotimplyapproval. ButthecaseagainsttradingwithRedChinais notmerelyobstructionist.Itmeetsthehardrealities ofthecase.Australia'spolicyshouldclearlybeto seektradeexpansionamongnationswhicharepotentiallyfriendly,whichcomplementhereconomy andwhichdonotattach"strings"totrade.Japan immediatelyspringstomindasanationwhichmeets theserequirementsasdoIndiaandCeylon.The strengtheningoftheireconomiesbyfriendlytrade wouldbolstertheirpoliticalstabilityagainstRed China.

Butitis'preciselyherethattheclashofinterest betweenthemerchantsandthenationbecomespainfullyclear.Forthesamegroupwhichisurging theexpansionoftradewithRedChina(indefiance ofeconomicfacts)'isatthesametimemobilising publicopinionagainsttheexpansionoftradewith Japan.Yetonthehardbasisofstatistics,AustralianexportstoJapanfortheninemonthsended inMarchofthisyeartotalled£103millions.Our purchasesfromJapaninthesameperiodwerenine millionsasagainst18millionsinthepreviousyear. Sothat,whiletheJapanesewereinatradedeficit of£94millionswithAustralia,ourimportsfrom Japanhadfallenbyhalf.

Japan'stradingneedscomplementourown,and cangivetheAustralianconsumercheapermanufacturedgoodsinreturnforourprimaryproducts. MoreoverJapanisapotentialfriendwhich,inalignmentwithIndiacouldcounterbalancethethreatof RedChinainthePacific.Itisthereforecurious tospeculatewhythePressandthemanufacturers maintaindifferentstandardsinrelationtotradewith ChinaandJapan.Itiscertainthatnoideological trustcanbeplacedineitherofthemandthatthey willnotbotheraboutthelongspoonwhenitcomes tosuppingwiththedevil.Butitmustseemodd totheordinarycitizenthatquartersbelievedtraditionallyconservativeinpoliticsarenowreaching overbackwardsinacausewhichcansignificantly serveCommunism.Dr.Evattmustsurelyhave somemisgivings,ifnotaboutthecause,atleast aboutthestrangebed-fellowsheharboursalongthe roadtoPeking.
