Ontheplatformwiththeparochialhall,primarilyaStandinghighinthe BishopweretheRev.J. Lynch,P.P.;Mr.Tom Myers(chairman)and Messrs.H.Robinsonand Burton(MaylandsRoad Board).

HisLordship,introduced byFatherLynchsaidthat intheshorttimethathe hadbeenintheparish FatherLynchhadbrought toasuccessfulconclusion twoprojectswhichsymbolisedandgavepractical effecttotwogreatinterests whichpredominateinhis priestlyministry-hisinterestin,anddevotion,to theyouthofhisparish,and 'ehisprofounddevotiontothe MotherofGod,underthe titleofOurLadyofFatima. whosemessagetotheworld hehadtriedsohardtopropagate,andmakeknown.

"Thefineparishhall, whichwehaveblessedthis afternoon,istheexpression ofFatherLynch'sconvictionthattheprovisionof recreationalfacilities,especiallyforouryoung people,inahealthyenvironmentandunderproper supervision,isoneofthe masteffectivebulwarks againstthegrowingtendencytowardsdisintegrationinfamilylife,and againstthescourgeofdelinquency,whichhasits rootsprimarilyinthatbreak downinhomelifewhich drivesyoungpeopleouton thestreetsinsearchofexcitementandentertainment,"saidHisLordship.

Ifwedonotprovideour youngpeoplewiththeentertainmentandthepleasant meansofoccupyingtheir timewhichareconsidered theprerogativeofthecarefreeyearsofyouth,they willendeavour,sometimes withwoefulresults,tofill thevoidthemselves,the Bishopcontinued.

"Butonceshowalively interestintheirneeds,and awillingnesstoprovide themwiththemeansofbeingentertained,orofentertainingthemselves,andthey willbefoundwilling,with veryfewexceptions,tobe guidedandsupervisedinthe useoftheirleisuretime.

Andtherewehavethe principalreasonforthe erectionofthishall.We hopethat,withthecooperationofparentsand youngpeoplealike,itwill becomethecentreofthe Catholicsociallifeofthe parish,wheretheparishionerswillgathertogether inthewarmandfriendly atmosphereoftheircommonFaith,toentertainor beentertained,happyinthe knowledgethat,afterthe attendanceatHolyMass andtheSacramentsasa familygroup,nothingcan bindthefamilymoreclosely thantakingtheirrecreation 11 togetherinanenvironment suchasthisparishhallwill provide.

Atfirstsightitmight seemastrangethingthata

churchgrounds,andoverlookingabusythoroughfare, itisthereforalltosee;that seeingtheymayberemindedthat"notbybread alonedothmanlive."

OnJune9,thelatestevidenceofthe growthofCatholiceducationinthisStatein generalandintheNorthamparishinparticularwasseenintheopeningofnewclassroomsattheMaristBros.College,at3p.m.

HisGracetheArchbishop, accompaniedbytheRt.Rev. Mgr.T.Lenihanandthe Rev.T.Phelan,arrivedat thegroundsandpassing throughaguardofhonour formedbyboysoftheCollegeproceededtothenew classrooms,whichheblessed andformallyopened.

Returningtothebalcony oftheoldbuildings,His Gracewasjoinedbythe Hon.thePremier(Mr.A. R.G.Hawke)andMrs. Hawke;theMayorofNortham(Mr.H.Rushton)and Mrs.Rushton,theDistrict SuperintendentofEducation(Mr.J.Deacon),the presidentoftheMarist Bros.ParentsandFriends' Association(Mr.J.P.Hopkins)andMrs.Hopkins,the rectorofSt.Charles'Seminary(theV.Rev.J.P. Wilkinson,C.M.,andBro. FelixoftheMaristBrothers.

Inaninspiringaddressto theassembly,HisGracethe Archbishop,spokeofthe excellentworkdonebythe communityofMarist Brothers.Theirrecordas teachers,whetherjudgedon asecularorreligiousbasis, wasunsurpassed,hesaid. HisGracecongratulated Mgr.Lenihanonbuilding twosuchfirst-classrooms forsuchalowfigureas 22,500.Suchaneffortwas theresultofwiseandskilfulplanningbyMgr.Lenihanandthewillingcooperationofmanyworkers atbusybees.

Thecheerfulwillingness ofthelaitytobearthe burdenofreligiouseducationwasasourceofconsolationandgratificationto thepriestsandteaching orders.

Somepeoplehadattimes challengedthepatriotismof Catholicsbecauseofamisconceptionoftheunderlying basisofCatholiceducation. Suchanattitudewasagro-tesquemisrepresentationof history.

Aboywhohadasound Catholiceducationwould proveasgoodacitizenof theStateasanyone.They werepreparedtofightfor theircountryandifnecessarydieforitsdefence againstaggressors,

Inpeace,asinwar,they wouldservetheircountry well,andtheirreligious trainingwouldstrengthen theirefforts.

ThePremiercongratulatedthepeopleofNorthamon havingsuchanacquisition totheeducationalfacilities ofthedistrict.Hewassurprisedtohearthelowcost ofsuchanexcellentbuildingandcongratulatedMgr. Lenihanandhisparishioners onsuchafineeffort.

Inashortaddressthe Mayor,Mr.H.Rushton,expressedhispleasureatbeing present.Hereferredin glowingtermstotheeducationreceivedbytheboys andmentionedthatphysicaleducationwasnotneglected. InmakingtheappealFatherWilkinson,saidhe hadbeenpresentatthe openingofthefirstMarist Brothers'schoolinNortham nineyearsbefore.

Sincethattimetheschool hadgrownfrom30to150 andsoextensionshadbecomean Duringurgentnecessity. thatperiodseveral boysfromNorthamhad joinedtheseminaryand theirqualitywasample proofoftheexcellenttrainingtheyreceived.

Mr.J.Deacon,ofthe EducationDepartment,said hewasinfullaccordwith HisGracetheArchbishop ontherealworthandvalue ofreligioustrainingineducation.HecongratulatedtheBrothersontheirpro- gressandhopedtheirfuture activitieswouldbeassuccessful.

Rev.Bro.Felix,superior ofthecollege,gavesomefactsandfiguresonthe growthoftheschoolpopula- tionoverthepreviousnine yearsandthankedMonsignorLenihanforallthat hehaddoneduringthe courseofconstructionof thebuildingbyhistireless overseeingtokeepthecost toaminimum. Attheconclusionofthe speechesadaintyafternoon teawasservedinthetrue Northamstylebytheladies oftheparishandthe

ButIdonotfallintothesnareofpretendingtobe infallibleorthatnorationaloppositioncanbemade tomyviews.ItoccurstomethatwhatIoriginally wroteaboutthefluoridationistsexhibiting"arrogance,ill-foundedsuperiorityandnotalittle bounce"hasbeenborneoutalltooaccuratelyin theevent.

Exner,M.D.,saysforthrightlythattherecanbeno meaningfulstatisticsoftoothdecayandthat"allthe talkabout60percent.reductionsoranyother reductions,isjustplainnonsense."

ThedentistscitethecaseofNewburgh,N.Y.as havingdisclosed,after10yearsoffluoridation,"not ashredofevidenceofanyharmfuleffect,"butgiving "apositiveproofofflouride'sgreatvalueincombattingdentalcaries."InthisconnectionitisinterestingtoquotetheobservationsofsomeNewburghdentistsinterviewedbythe"NewburghNews" (Dec.14,1955)onthecompletionoftheexperiment.

Noneofthemwaspreparedtoconfirmtheofficialclaimofa 66percentreductionofcaries.AFewbelievedtheyhadse-n someImprovementintheteethoftheyoungerchildren.One dentisttestifiedthathisyoungestchild.hornsincethesta,,of fluoridation,hadworsecavitiesthananyofhisolderchildrn. AprominentmemberoftheNewburghDentalSocietydeclar-d that"whatlittleeffectit(fluoridation)mighthavehadwasnot apparent.Oneeffectoffluoridation,howeverwasabundantly manifest."Insteadoftheexpected10percent-rrt'ld"and -unobjectionable"mottling,theNewburghchildrenhornsince theinitiationoftheprogrammewereaveragingatleast30per centmottling,someofitsevereenoughtobecomeultimately disfiguringwithage.

TestTownStatisticsChallenged

Newburghin1953alsoshowedanabnormaland suspiciousriseinmortalityfromheartdisease,well abovethenationalaverage.Theamountoffluoride addedtothewateratNewburghexceededthelimit forapublicwatersupplyassetforthatthattime bytheU.S.FederalGovernment.MottledfingernailswerealsofoundamongthechildrenofNewburghandDr.LeoSpirain1943identifiedthisasan earlysignoffluorosis(fluorinepoisoning). No statisticianandnooneoutsidethegroupofofficial experimentershaseverbeenabletomakeheador tailofwhatisbehindtheirpublishedfigures.

BartlettandCameronarequotedasproviding evidenceofthesafetyoffluoridation.AnX-ray examinationofresidentsofBartlettin1943, conductedbythePublicHealthService,were foundbyaradiologisttodisclose11percent.of abnormalbonedensity.Again,thereisaremarkablediscrepancyinthefluoridepercentageclaimed forBartlett.TheP.H.S.saysitswatercontains 8p.p.m.offluoride.TheTexasHealthDept.says6.6 p.p.m.Ourdentistssaytheaveragelengthof residenceinthesetownsofthesubjectsstudiedwas 37iyearsatthecompletionofthestudy.They neglecttostatethatonly11(14.5percent)ofthose studiedinBartletthadbeenbornthereorhadlived thereduringtheperiodoftoothandbonedevelopment.Sowhenwearetoldthat11-12percentof theseshowedevidenceofosteriosclerosis,itissomewhatmisleading.Atleast82percentofthose exposedtoBartlettwaterduringthebone-forming periodshowedevidenceofosteriosclerosis.Inboth BartlettandCameron45percentofpersonsare recordedashavingabnormalitiesoflymphocytic whitecells.Moreover,40percentofpeoplestudied inBartletthadlostalltheirteeth,whilstonly20 percenthaddonesoinCameron.Likewise,Bartlett'sD.M.F.ratewaslowerthanCameron'sin1943 buthigherin1953.

Manywhoarecareless,irresponsible,orbadlyadvised, continuetoregardmotherhoodasanoccupationrequiringnoskillatall.Oneistemptedtowonderwhether wearewisetoleavethedecisiononsuchanimportant matterentirelyinthehandsofsuchparents.Their ignoranceofthemostelementaryprinciplesofhandling ayoungchildcausesthemtomakeallkindsofmistakes, forwhichboththeyandthechildsuffer.

Theaimshouldbetoprovideinstructionforevery manandomanbeforethefirstbabyarrives.Thatis onlycommonsense-butwegofurtherandsayitis equallyamatterofcommonsensetoprovidethatinstructionaspartofachild'sgeneraleducation.

AmissionaryinChinafor almost20years,FatherMcGrathworkedintheDioceseofHanyangfrom1930 until1947.In1948hewas appointedbyArchbishop Riberi,PapalInternuncioto China,topromotethe LegionofMarythroughout Ithecountry. Hetravelledmanythousandsofmilesorganising andestablishingtheLegion, andbyJanuary,1951,there weremorethan1,000praesidiain90Chinesedioceses.

WhentheCommunists gainedcontroloverChina, theLegionbecameaspecial targetfortheirattack.It wasdescribedintheCommunistPressasa"counterrevolutionaryandreactionaryorganisation,"anagent offoreignimperialism.""an internationalspy-ring."

Forthefirsttwoyearsof hisimprisonmenthewas denied.anyreadingmatter whatsoever.Afterwardshe wasgivenCommunistnewspapersandliteratureto read.

Finally,onApril28,1954. hewagbroughtbeforethree judgesandadocumentwas readtohimenumeratinghis "crimes."Itsaidthathe wasaninternationalspy, thathehadspreada"reactionaryorganisation"calledtheLegionofMary amongtheyouth,andthat theLegionhadblockedthe "independent Church" movement.

Oneofthejudgesthen announcedthatFatherMcGrathwouldbetreated withclemencyandexpelled fromthecountry,andwould besparedthesternersentencethatthepanelconsideredappropriate.

Theseeffortstobarpriestsfrommissionschools insouthernSudan,violatesasurancesgivenbySudaneseEducationMinisterZiadaArbablastFebruary 13whenheannouncedthattheKhartoumgovernmentwastaking"directandfullcharge"ofeducationinthesouthernprovinces.Hesaidatthattime that"thetakingoverofschoolsbythegovernment hasnothingtodowiththemissions'effortsinthe fieldofreligion,"andthat"everyfacilitywillbe giveninallschoolsforreligiousinstruction."

Informedquartershererevealedthatwhenthe schoolswereseized,theprovincialeducationofficer ofEquatoriaProvince,aSudanesePresbyterian,did hisbesttopreventCatholicpriestsfromentering theoccupiedschoolsduringthetimeforreligion classes.Anothergovernmenteducationofficialin BahrelGhazalProvinceactedsimilarlyattheseized CatholicmissionschoolatBussere,andtheprovincial educationofficerofUpperNileProvincealsobarred priestsfromenteringnationalisedCatholicschools.

Itwasunderstoodherethatthemovestobarthe priestsfromtheiroldschoolsweretakenonorders fromaschoolinspectorsenttotheSouthbytheMoslem-controlledgovernmentinKhartoum.Heallegedlymadetherulingongroundsthatifthemissionaries enteredtheschoolstoteachreligion,thepeoplemight thinktheywerestillincharge.

Thegovernment'sschoolnationalisationpolicywhichistocoverthewholeeducationalsystemofthe southernprovinceswithinthenextfouryears-was begunwiththeseizureofthevillageschools,which includethefirsttwoorthreegrades,theboys'elementaryschoolsandthehalf-dozenteachers'trainingschools.Theseizurewasaccompaniedbyaflat banontheopeningofnewprivateschoolsduringthe nextthreeorfouryears.

Includedintheinitialnationalisationschemewere some50Protestantschools.Themajority,however, wereCatholicschools,209villageschoolshavingan enrollmentofabout9,910,40boys'elementaryschools withapproximately4,940pupils,andthreeteachers' trainingcentreswithabout120studentsinall.
