WhereDoWorkersStandRegarding.A.L.p?

Thefollowingisthetextofanaddress givenbytheV.Rev.FatherCrowe,rector oftheRedemptoristMonastery,NorthPerth, to220menataCommunionbreakfastat ScarboroughonJune9:

FatherCrowesaidheintendedto/speakonthe confusedandconfusingpoliticalsituationthatconfrontedtheAustralianCatholicworkertoday.Itis surelytimeweclarifiedourideasonitandfound outexactlywherewestood.

Thiswasnotatimeformisplacedloyalty;neither wasitatimeforpassionateoutbursts."No,letus examinethesituationsincerelyandcalmlysothat ourjudgmentuponitmaybefairandjust."

Forinstance,thosewhodeclaredthatDr.Evatt andhisfriendswereallCommunists,wereneither fairnorjust.Similarly,thosewhosaid:"Ihave alwaysvotedLabourandalwayswill,"hadnot sincerelyandcalmlyexaminedthesituation.

NowtheLabourMovementwas,withoutdoubt, themostpowerfulforceinourcountrytoday.That wasbecauseofthenumberswhooweditallegiance andbecauseofthetremendouspoweritwielded throughtheTradesUnions.

NowtheCommunistPartyunderstoodthatpoint onlytoowell.Thereforethegreatobjectiveofthat PartywastogaincontroloftheLabourMovement. Buthowwasthattobedone?

Moscowhadgivenaveryclearandpracticaldirectiveinthematter.Itwastobebroughtaboutby "fosteringaleftwingintheLabourParty."The leftwingmustthengetthefullsupportoftheCommunistPartyandoftheRed-dominatedUnions.

NowtheLabourPartyhadalwayshadaleftwing butwithallduerespecttoDr.Evatt,theLabour Partywasnotleftist.Forinstance,JohnScullinwas notaleftist,neitherwasJohnCurtinnorBenChifley.TheyweremoderateLabourmenwhohadat heartthegoodoftheworkingclass.

Nowtherearebroadlyspeaking,twokindsof Socialism:thefirstaimedatputtingunderState controlallsourcesofproduction,distributionand exchange.Henceeverythingwouldberunbythe St.ite.

Thatwouldbeadenialoftherightofprivate property,andoftherightoftheChurchtoteach religionsincethatkindofSocialismdespisedboth Godandreligion.HencethatformofSocialismhas longsincebeencondemnedbytheChurch.Itwas basedpurelyonmaterialismandaimedpractically atthesameobjectiveasCommunism.

NowthesecondkindofSocialismaimedatplacing someofthesourcesofproduction,distributionand exchangeunderStatecontrol,viz,thosethatwould givetoomuchpowertoindividuals.

ThatsecondformofSocialismwas itselfnot condemnedbytheChurch.ThereforewhenChifley proposedtonationalisebanking,theChurchmade nopronouncementonewayortheother.Catholics werefreetovoteastheywished,astherewasno moralissueinvolved.

tentpoint:thatthoughpartialsocialisationisnot wronginitself,neverthelessitwouldbewrongifit weremerelyasteppingstonetototalsocialisationinotherwordstoextremeSocialism.

HoweversincethesocialistobjectiveoftheLabour Partyhasneverbeenclearlydefined,thereisroom inthePartyforbothschoolsofthought.Sothat iswhytheLabourPartycanhavealeftwing,as theextremesectionisusuallycalled.

Letmenow,showyouhowtheCommunistPlan forgainingcontroloftheLabourMovement,works out:-

LetmequotecomradeSharkeytoprovemypoint. WritingintheCommunistReview(July1952)he says:"Itisaquestionforusofsettingoutconsciously tofosteraleftwingintheLabourParty-toencourage alltheincipientrevoltsexpressingthemselvesinthe LabourParty."

RedsAimToSmashLabourUnity

IntheAprilissueofthesameReview1953,this samecomradefurtherstates:"OurPartyLeadership muststudythedevelopmentswithintheLabour Party,thedivisions,themovesamongtherankand file,anddeveloptheunitedfronttacticstoseize everysituation.Bythetacticsoftheunitedfront, weaimtowrestthemassesoftheworkingclass fromthegripofthetreacherousLabourParty Leaders."

ThosewordsshowclearlythattheaimoftheCommunististosmashLabourunityandformaunited frontwiththeextremists.

Thesecondstepistheinfiltrationofthisleftist LabourPartywithundercoverCommunists.Sincein Australia,Communistscannothopetobeelectedto Parliamentontheirownticket,whynotposeasleft wingLabourmenorSocialistsandthusgainendorsementbytheofficialLabourParty?

Againinproofofmystatementletmequotethe CommunistReview.WritingintheSept.issue1952, comradeAarons(Communistsecretary,N.S.W.)says: "ItisthetaskoftheCommuniststoassistandtolead thisLeftWingintheA.L.P."HowcantheCommunistsleadthisLeftWingunlessbyinfiltration methods?

Thensuddentlyheturnedsavagelyuponthem.He declaredthattheiraimwastoseizecontrolofthe LabourParty.HethendeniedthemtheA.L.P. backingandthiswastantamounttoliquidatingthem.

NowIwouldliketostressthispoint:thatoneo;. twoofsuchfactsprovenothingagainstDr.Evatt. Butwhenwearefacedwithachainofsuchfactswell,wemusttakethemattermoreseriously.For factsdoaddupandfinallytheycanamounttostrong, toconclusiveevidence.
