OnMay15,atSt.Brigid's,WestPerth, therepassedtohereternalrewardMother M.AquinGilchrist,atthevenerableageof Latershewastransferred tothefoundationatSt. Brigid'sandwasthelast survivoroftheoriginal members.

Deceasedwasbornin Yorkin1864andwasbaptisedbyMonsignorBourke afewdayslater.Shebelongedtoafamilyofthree sistersallofwhombecame SistersofMercy,giving valuableservicesinthe causeofreligionandeducation,andattainingthegoldenjubileeoftheirreligious profession.

MotherAquinoutdistancedhersistersinthematter ofageandcelebratedher diamondjubileein1954; thusthecontinuedyears spentintheCourtsofthe Lordofthisremarkable familymaketheenviable totalofonehundredand seventy.

MotherAquin'searly yearswerespentatthe ConventofMercy,Victoria Square,whereshemadeher religiousprofessionin 1894.

WhatisthescapularoftheSacredHeart?

AdevotiondisseminatedbytheOblatesof MaryImmaculateandnotwell-known throughoutthisStateisdescribedinthe followingarticle.

EstelleFaguettewasborn intheyear1843nearthe FrenchtownofChalonssur-Marne.Nothinginany wayremarkablehasbeen recordedofherchildhood. Attheageofeighteenshe enteredtheAugustinian Convent,buttwoyearslater hadtoleaveowingtobad health.

Shespentthenextten yearsemployedinthe householdoftheComtesse delaRochefoucaldnear Pellevoisin,asmall'ownin theDepartmentofIndre.

Onceagainshewasstruck downwithtuberculosisand theComtessehadherinstalledinachateaunear theChurchatPellevoisin. Bytheendoftheyear, suchwasherconditionthat thedoctorswereconvinced thatshehadbutafewdays tolive.

Twoslightmodifications weremadebytheCongregationofRitesintheform ofthescapularhithertoin use.BythistheHolySee wishedtoemphasisethat whilethedevotionofthe scapularwasfullyapproved, thisshouldnotbetakenasa declarationoftheauthenticityoftheapparition miracles,etc.,connected withtheoriginsofthe scapular.

Sundaylast,theFeastofPentecost,was theoccasionofaninspiringspectacle,when amen'sgeneralCommunionwasheldat theImmaculateHeartofMaryChurch, Scarborough.

AtthesungMass,during whichtheparishchoirrenderedMoreno'sMissaUndecima,some350menand boysapproachedthealtar railsinabody,givinga splendiddemonstrationof faith.

AsimilarnumberattendedthebreakfastafterMass, presidedoverbyMr.Tom McGuireinthepresenceof theRev.E.McBride,P.P.

Mr.McGuirewelcomed andintroducedtothose present,theguestspeaker,

theRev.J.Crowe,C.Ss.R., whooutlinedthepositionof theCatholicworkingmanin relationtothepresentconfusedpoliticalstatusofthe AustralianLabourParty.

Mr.JackMaynardably proposedthevoteofthanks toFatherCrowe. Thankswerealsoextended tothoseladiesoftheparish, withoutwhoseco-operation thepreparationandserving oftheexcellentbreakfast couldnothavebeenaccomplished.

Withthesewordssheliftedasmallsquareofwhite materialsheworeonher breastandturneditoverto showtheotherside.Itbore therepresentationofascarletHeartemittingflames andsurmountedbyacross. Itwasringedwiththorns andfromawoundinitcame dropsofbloodandwater.

Vienna,June4:The RedHungarianGovernmenthasadmittedthatits exclusionofreligiousinstructionfromschoolshas notworkedoutandannounceditwillbegin "regularinstructionon questionsofethicsand morals."

Earlier,theRedMinistry ofEducationhadabolished regularreligiousinstruction inschoolsduringregularhours.Suchinstructionwas availabletothosepupilsonlywhoseparentshadrequesteditinwriting.These pupilsareallowedtoreceiveinstructionsinreligion onlybeforeorafterregular classhours.

Accordingtoreports reachinghere,theministry hasreceivedcomplaints from thatHungarianparents lackofregularreligious instructionhasabadeffect onthemoralityofyoung people.

TheAnglicanArchbishopofCanterbury,Dr. GeoffreyFisher,wasrecentlyreportedtohavemade asensationalPressattackontheCatholicChurch inBritain.HesaidthatCatholicswere"waging war"againsttheAnglicanChurch.Atthesame timeheproposedarevolutionaryCouncilofChurches ofwhichhewouldlikethePopetobechairman. ItissurelyasignofthetimesthatDr.Fisher'soutburstbroughtsomebittercriticismevenfromthe secularnationaldailiesofBritain.TheLondon "DailyExpress"afteraccusingtheArchbishopof deliberatelypromotingasqualid,sterilecontroversy, asked:"Whatisneedlinghim?"TheCatholicArchbishopofWestminsterrefusedtocommentonDr. Fisher'sstatements.Hesimplysaid:"Ipreferto leaveittothegoodsenseoftheBritishpeopleto judgewhoiswagingwar."

Thereseemsnoreasonabledoubtthatwhatis "needling"Dr.FisheristheremarkablerateofconversionstotheFaiththroughouttheBritishIsles, nottheleastaspectofwhichisanincreasingintake ofAnglicanclergymen.Thereis,ofcourse,asense inwhichthespiritualprocessknownas"conversion" mayberegardedaswarfare.TheChurchitselfis rightlycalledtheChurchMilitantandtheScriptures arerepletewithmartialmetaphorsregardingit. Christiansareexhortedtoputontheshieldoffaith, thearmourofGod,towrestlewiththepowersof darkness,tofightthegoodfight.Inaliteralsense theChurchisthesalvationarmy.Butthewarfare thatinvolvesconversionisfromheavenratherthan fromearth.Nooneconvertsanother.Faithisa divinegiftfreelygivenbyGodandmenaremerely feebleinstrumentalitiesusedbytheHolySpiritfor theconferralofHislargesse.

SoitisthatwhiletheAnglicanprelateisnaturally upsetthatCatholicismshouldbemakinginroads uponwhatheregardsashispreserve,thechoiceof thetermwarfareisinfelicitous.Foritinfers aggressive,ifnotunfairmethods,andbyandlarge thatwouldnotbeatruepictureofthetechniques employedtoattractnon-CatholicstotheexaminationofCatholicclaims.Admirablerestrainthasbeen shownbyCatholicprelatesandnewspapersintheir commentsontheArchbishop'soutburst.Andthatis asitshouldbebecausenothingissorendingas sectarianstrifeandwhateverleadstoacrimonious andfinalquarrelling,beingcontrarytothenatureof charity,shouldberegardedaswhatitis-adevice ofthedevil.Suchquarrelssolvenothinganddothe wholebodyofsincereChristianssignaldisservice. Itisthekindof"holywar"wecanallaffordtomiss.

Byvirtueofitsuniqueandtotalclaims,andby divinecommissionthepropagationoftheFaithwill necessarilystiruptrouble.OurLordsolemnly warnedthatHisdoctrineswouldsetfatheragainst sonandhistoryisstrewnwithpagesofunhappy strifeamongnationsoverreligiousdifferences.Not allofthis,ofcourse,wasinevitable.Itispossible todiscussreligionwithoutdescendingtofisticuffs. YetinherentlytheChurch,inproclaimingthefull revelationofChrist,willnecessarilyfinditselfin conflictwiththeworldofunbeliefanderror.Forit claimsthewholemanandtheallegianceofallmen. ItcannotceasetopreachtheGospeluntiltheconsummationoftheworld.Indeed,astheScriptures warn,menwillpersecutetheChurchinthebelief thattheydoaservicetoGod.Yettheworkof redemptionmustgoon,comerack,comerope.It remainsonlytoclosethehiatusbetweenbeliefand conductandtomakeamostardentcharitythehallmarkofourendeavours.
