OnMay15,atSt.Brigid's,WestPerth, therepassedtohereternalrewardMother M.AquinGilchrist,atthevenerableageof Latershewastransferred tothefoundationatSt. Brigid'sandwasthelast survivoroftheoriginal members.

Deceasedwasbornin Yorkin1864andwasbaptisedbyMonsignorBourke afewdayslater.Shebelongedtoafamilyofthree sistersallofwhombecame SistersofMercy,giving valuableservicesinthe causeofreligionandeducation,andattainingthegoldenjubileeoftheirreligious profession.

MotherAquinoutdistancedhersistersinthematter ofageandcelebratedher diamondjubileein1954; thusthecontinuedyears spentintheCourtsofthe Lordofthisremarkable familymaketheenviable totalofonehundredand seventy.

MotherAquin'searly yearswerespentatthe ConventofMercy,Victoria Square,whereshemadeher religiousprofessionin 1894.

Theblessingofthe newpresbyteryat Rookwood-st.,Mt.LawIey.hasbeenpostponed untilthenewchurchis completed.

Itisanticipatedthat thenewChurchofSt. Paul,Roolrwood-st.,will becompletedearlyin December.

Dr.MaryGlowrey(SisterMaryoftheSacred Heart)whodiedatBangalore,India,onMay5, wasacousinofCr.J.H. GlowreyofthePalace Hotel.

BornatBirregurra,Victoria,deceasedstudied medicineatMelbourneUniversitywhereshequalified M.B.,B.S.in1910. ChristchurchAfterappointmentsat hospital,N.Z. andtheVictorianEyeand Earhospital,Melbourne,she practisedasanoculistin Collins-street.

In1919sheobtainedthe M.D.degreeatMelbourne University.

Inthefollowingyearshe tookastepthat,whilelittle, ifatall,shortofheroismin viewofthesacrificesitentailed,wasvirtuallytorevolutionise medicineCatholicmissionary andhospitalisation inIndia;shejoinedthe DutchOrderofJesus,MaryandJoseph,andwentto Guntur.

Afactorthatmotivated heringoingtoIndiawas thatatthetimewomenin Indiawouldnotconsultmen practitioners.

AtGuntursheorganised theCatholichospital,and hadchargeofitfor37years. Latersheestablisheda CatholichospitalatBangalore.

Twowell-knownMelbourneprofessionalwomen eventuallybecameassociatedwithDr.MaryGlowery inherworkinIndia:Dr. EthelPitt(SisterM.Veronica)andachemist,Miss MargaretBarrett(SisterM. PeterJulian).

Dr.MaryGloweryestablishedtheCatholicHospitals'AssociationinIndia.

EstelleFaguettewasborn intheyear1843nearthe FrenchtownofChalonssur-Marne.Nothinginany wayremarkablehasbeen recordedofherchildhood. Attheageofeighteenshe enteredtheAugustinian Convent,buttwoyearslater hadtoleaveowingtobad health.

Shespentthenextten yearsemployedinthe householdoftheComtesse delaRochefoucaldnear Pellevoisin,asmall'ownin theDepartmentofIndre.

Onceagainshewasstruck downwithtuberculosisand theComtessehadherinstalledinachateaunear theChurchatPellevoisin. Bytheendoftheyear, suchwasherconditionthat thedoctorswereconvinced thatshehadbutafewdays tolive.

ItissurelyasignofthetimesthatDr.Fisher'soutburstbroughtsomebittercriticismevenfromthe secularnationaldailiesofBritain.TheLondon "DailyExpress"afteraccusingtheArchbishopof deliberatelypromotingasqualid,sterilecontroversy, asked:"Whatisneedlinghim?"TheCatholicArchbishopofWestminsterrefusedtocommentonDr. Fisher'sstatements.Hesimplysaid:"Ipreferto leaveittothegoodsenseoftheBritishpeopleto judgewhoiswagingwar."

Thereseemsnoreasonabledoubtthatwhatis "needling"Dr.FisheristheremarkablerateofconversionstotheFaiththroughouttheBritishIsles, nottheleastaspectofwhichisanincreasingintake ofAnglicanclergymen.Thereis,ofcourse,asense inwhichthespiritualprocessknownas"conversion" mayberegardedaswarfare.TheChurchitselfis rightlycalledtheChurchMilitantandtheScriptures arerepletewithmartialmetaphorsregardingit. Christiansareexhortedtoputontheshieldoffaith, thearmourofGod,towrestlewiththepowersof darkness,tofightthegoodfight.Inaliteralsense theChurchisthesalvationarmy.Butthewarfare thatinvolvesconversionisfromheavenratherthan fromearth.Nooneconvertsanother.Faithisa divinegiftfreelygivenbyGodandmenaremerely feebleinstrumentalitiesusedbytheHolySpiritfor theconferralofHislargesse.

SoitisthatwhiletheAnglicanprelateisnaturally upsetthatCatholicismshouldbemakinginroads uponwhatheregardsashispreserve,thechoiceof thetermwarfareisinfelicitous.Foritinfers aggressive,ifnotunfairmethods,andbyandlarge thatwouldnotbeatruepictureofthetechniques employedtoattractnon-CatholicstotheexaminationofCatholicclaims.Admirablerestrainthasbeen shownbyCatholicprelatesandnewspapersintheir commentsontheArchbishop'soutburst.Andthatis asitshouldbebecausenothingissorendingas sectarianstrifeandwhateverleadstoacrimonious andfinalquarrelling,beingcontrarytothenatureof charity,shouldberegardedaswhatitis-adevice ofthedevil.Suchquarrelssolvenothinganddothe wholebodyofsincereChristianssignaldisservice. Itisthekindof"holywar"wecanallaffordtomiss.

Byvirtueofitsuniqueandtotalclaims,andby divinecommissionthepropagationoftheFaithwill necessarilystiruptrouble.OurLordsolemnly warnedthatHisdoctrineswouldsetfatheragainst sonandhistoryisstrewnwithpagesofunhappy strifeamongnationsoverreligiousdifferences.Not allofthis,ofcourse,wasinevitable.Itispossible todiscussreligionwithoutdescendingtofisticuffs.
