Cardiff:FatherStanley Vince,pastorofalittletown ofLlandovery,hasbeen electedtobethattown's mayorbytheentirelyProtestantboardofaldermen.

Itisreportedtobethe firsttimeinthemodernhistoryofWalesthatapriest hasbeenelectedtosucha post.FatherVince,whowas electedtothetowncouncil lastyear,willserveas mayorfora12-monthterm. ALondonerbybirth,he studiedandwasordained attheEnglishCollegein Lisbon,Portugal,in1945. Hehasspentallhispriestly lifeworkingintheWelsh DioceseofMenevia.

Thepresident,Mr.Joe Healyformallywelcomed thechaplain,theRev.J.Depiazziandalsotheguest speakeroftheeveningMr. FrankMalone,thenational officerforWesternAustraliaoftheCatholicSocial Movement.

FatherDepiazzithengave ashortaddresschoosingthe ParableoftheTalentsto illustratethateachperson isgiftedwithnaturaltalents invaryingproportion,and itisforalltousethosegifts suchaspersonalitytoinfluencetheirfellowworkers alongtheChristianroad andthusmaketheirplaces ofemploymentthebetter forthatinfluence.

Mr.Malonestatedthatthe workoftheCatholicSocial Movementwastoeducate Catholicstointerpretcorrectlythedivineteachings oftheChurchastheyappliedtoeverydayendeavours,whetherinthehome orattheplaceofemployment.

Hisinterestingandinformativeaddresstouchedona numberofsubjects,oneof whichwasthepresentday scourgeofCommunismand theneedforworkerstotake anactiveinterestintheir unionstocombatthis menaceandplayanimportantpartinthefutureof theircountry.

Thesecretary-treasurer, Mr.AlanCrofts,thanked thespeakersandalsothose whohadhelpedinthecatering.

His latedLordshipcongratutheleagueonitsoutstandingworkinallfields. ToMonsignorLangmead,theleaguechaplain,His Lordshipalsoexpressed thanks,foralthoughthe Monsignorwasanextremelybusymantheleaguehad hisassistancealways.Congratulationswereextended totheexecutiveandalso goodwishesforthefuture.

In1939hewasappointed RectorIrremoveableofCottesloe,afterhavingactedas locumtenensatWestPerth, Claremont,Nedlandsand MosmanPark. "TheRecord,"onbehalf ofalegionoffriendsand well-wishersextendscongratulationstothejubila- rian.

Thecrowningceremony tookplaceintheevening. Afterthecross-bearerand acolytescamebanner,pageboys(inbluecapescarryingcandles),crown-bearer, queenandattendants.

Theparishpriestand altarboys,followedbythe statueofOurLadyona silver-bedeckedbier,beneathabowerofyellow chrysanthemumsandmaidenhairfern,carriedbyfour childreninlongwhite frockswithbluesashes, filedintothechurchtothe strainsof"ThisistheImage ofOurQueen."

Astheroyalgroupsettledandthechoirproceededwiththecrowninghymn thequeenplacedasilver crownstuddedwithwhite rosesontheimageofthe QueenofHeaven.

Immediatelythealtarbecameablazeofcolourin blueandwhitefairylights, andblue,redandwhite roses.

ThenFatherO'Reillyconsecratedtheparishtothe ImmaculateHeartofMary. Therosaryfollowedduring whichthequeenformed'a garlandofrosesatOur Lady'sfeet.(AteachOur Fatheraredlampwas placedonthealtardrthe SacredHeart.)

ThesonofthelateMr. andMrs.P.J.Russellof Kalgoorlie,FatherRussell beganhisschoolingwiththe St.JohnofGodnunsat Kalgoorlie,proceedingfrom theretotheChristianBrothersinthesametown.

Hishigherstudieswere followedatSt.Columba's College,Springwood,St. Patrick'sCollege,Manly, andatthemissionaryseminaryofBrignoleSalein Genoa.

OnhisreturntoPerth afterordinationin1932,he wasappointedtoLeederville parishasassistanttoMgr. J.F.Moloney,wherehe remaineduntil1937.

Inthatyearhereceived hisfirstappointmentas parishpriest,toPinjarra. HewassubsequentlyparishpriestofNarrogin forsix Recalledyears.tothemetropolitanareain1946,hewas appointedto Bayswater parishwherehehaslabouredforthepast11years.

Whatisevenmoresignificant,andholdsoutgreat hopetothosewholovefreedom,isthattherevoltwas organisedbytheyouthof Hungary,andcarriedout bytheindustrialworkers.

Thesewerethetwo groupsonwhomtheCommuniststhoughttheycould rely,thelatterbecausethey werethefavouredsection ofCommunistsociety,the formerbecausetheyhad beenbroughtupinthe schoolofCommunistindoctrination.

Butwhenthetimecame, thesedarlingsoftheRussian dictatorshiprejecteditout ofhand,andtheRussians foundtheycouldnoteven relyontheirownarmyof occupationtoapplythefull savageryofoppressionthat wasneededtocrushtheresistanceofapracticallyunarmedpeople.

TheyfinallyhadtowithdrawtheRussiantroops andsendinMongolreinforcementstore-establish thereignofterrorthatis theironlyanswertoHungary'spleaforindependence.

Inawordtheapostlesofintellectualliberalism inferentiallydenytherationalityofman.Theycannotortheywillnotseethattofreethemindfrom restraintsofanoppressivesortistoinvitethelibertianismofthesensesandemotions.Ifamanmay teachthatextra-nuptialsexualexperienceisa broadeningandenrichingelementinthedevelopmentofpersonality,whyshouldnottheactreinforce thetheory,thestudentmaywellenquire.The liberal,ofcourse,willarguethatthestudentisnot boundsincetheviewsexpoundedarenotdogmatic, andinanycasehiswillisnotinfringedupon.But thatistoignoretherealityofsinsofthemind,that evilisnotmerelyintheactbutspringsoriginally fromtheintellectandtheimagination.Surelyitis idleto"liberate"themindifitisstillboundby thefettersofthewill.Isnotthistosetupyet severerrepressionsthatthoseitwasoriginally intendedtodestroy?

But,ofcourse,intheintellectualdesertsoftoday, objectivityisatadiscountandnosystemispossible apartfromawelterofsubjectivetheoriesandevercorrigiblehypotheses.Butifnowandthenthe rationalnatureofmanassertsitselfandeviltrees fructifyinevilfruit,itwillbealltooeasytostimulatesurpriseandhorrorthatmaybeashadeinsincere,ifnothypocritical.

Andwhatistrueoftherelationofknowledgeto theconductofindividualsisunderlinedheavily whenacademicsubjectsareinvolvedwhichaffect thenationandsocietyatlarge.Inthisfieldweare inyetgraverperil.

OneofthemostglaringanomaliesoftheAustraliansceneisthatprofessorsherearepermitted, withoutletorhindrance,topropagatepoliticaldoctrinessubversiveoftheStateandinimicaltonational welfare.Thatsituationobtainsnotablyinthe NationalUniversityofCanberra.Itistruealsoof ourlocaluniversityinamuchlesserdegreeasto numbers,butwithgreaterdisparity,considering thattheStatehelpspaysthesalaryofthemenwho attempttosubvertit.

Theremedyisnotalongthelinesofthoughtcontrolbutintheenlargementofthesenseofresponsibility.Nosinglefactorwouldhelpmoreinthis regardthantheleaveningoftheChristianfaith.
