Inawordtheapostlesofintellectualliberalism inferentiallydenytherationalityofman.Theycannotortheywillnotseethattofreethemindfrom restraintsofanoppressivesortistoinvitethelibertianismofthesensesandemotions.Ifamanmay teachthatextra-nuptialsexualexperienceisa broadeningandenrichingelementinthedevelopmentofpersonality,whyshouldnottheactreinforce thetheory,thestudentmaywellenquire.The liberal,ofcourse,willarguethatthestudentisnot boundsincetheviewsexpoundedarenotdogmatic, andinanycasehiswillisnotinfringedupon.But thatistoignoretherealityofsinsofthemind,that evilisnotmerelyintheactbutspringsoriginally fromtheintellectandtheimagination.Surelyitis idleto"liberate"themindifitisstillboundby thefettersofthewill.Isnotthistosetupyet severerrepressionsthatthoseitwasoriginally intendedtodestroy?
But,ofcourse,intheintellectualdesertsoftoday, objectivityisatadiscountandnosystemispossible apartfromawelterofsubjectivetheoriesandevercorrigiblehypotheses.Butifnowandthenthe rationalnatureofmanassertsitselfandeviltrees fructifyinevilfruit,itwillbealltooeasytostimulatesurpriseandhorrorthatmaybeashadeinsincere,ifnothypocritical.
Andwhatistrueoftherelationofknowledgeto theconductofindividualsisunderlinedheavily whenacademicsubjectsareinvolvedwhichaffect thenationandsocietyatlarge.Inthisfieldweare inyetgraverperil.
OneofthemostglaringanomaliesoftheAustraliansceneisthatprofessorsherearepermitted, withoutletorhindrance,topropagatepoliticaldoctrinessubversiveoftheStateandinimicaltonational welfare.Thatsituationobtainsnotablyinthe NationalUniversityofCanberra.Itistruealsoof ourlocaluniversityinamuchlesserdegreeasto numbers,butwithgreaterdisparity,considering thattheStatehelpspaysthesalaryofthemenwho attempttosubvertit.
Theremedyisnotalongthelinesofthoughtcontrolbutintheenlargementofthesenseofresponsibility.Nosinglefactorwouldhelpmoreinthis regardthantheleaveningoftheChristianfaith.
