Atthattime,also,itwas stronglyurgedthatsome stepsbetakentorelieve missionersofsomeofthe burdenconcernedwiththe work,especiallyifoverwork preventedtheirspiritual careofallthepeoplein theircharge.Thesuggestion wasmadethattheorderof deaconbereinstitutedasan independent,terminalgrade intheclergy.
Inanaddresstothe congress,BishopWillemvan Bekkum,S.V.D.,Vicar ApostolicofRuteng,Indonesia,stressedthegreat needofmissionersforassistanceintheministryof themissions.
Atthesametime,itwas pointedoutthatnotonlyin missionareas,butalsoin Europe,wheregreatpopulationshiftshavetaken placebecauseofinunigranonfrombehindtheIron Curtain,priestsaregreatly inneedofhelpincaringfor theirswellingparishes.
Thediaconatewasaselfcontainedgradeintheearly Church.Nowretainedonly initssymbolicform,inthe LatinRite,itsrestorationas apracticalaidinministerial functionsisconsideredby manyasanidealsolutionto theproblemspresentedin missionareasandheavily populatedparishes.
DuringtheNetherlands MissiologicalWeek,inadditiontoFatherdeReeper's paperontherestorationof thediaconate,suggestions werealsomadethatthevernacularbeintroducedinto severalpartsoftheMass, especiallyinmissioncountries.
Admittedlythisisnot whatmanywereexpecting RumourhaditthatLord Alanbrookehadarranged withthepublishers,Collins, forthepublicationofhis wardiaries.
Iunderstandthatthatis so,hut,forobviousreasons, itwillbesomeyearsbefore thereadingpublicisgiven accesstothefrankcommentsofthemanwhowas chairmanoftheChiefsof StaffCommitteesduringthe mostcriticalperiodofthe war. Whatthisbookdoescontainisatrulymagnificent accountofthewarasseen throughtheeyesofBritain's principalstrategist.
Ithasbeenwrittenbythe mostablewriterinthefield ofhistoryatthepresent time,andhehashadaccess bothtoFieldMarshalAlanbrooke's autobiographical notesandtothediaries whichthisextraordinary mankeptreligiouslyevery day.

Atsuchnightsessionshe wouldcomeupwithharebraineddemandsforinvasionsofNorway,ormaybe Greece,orthecoastof France. Hismindworkedconstantlyonplansforoffence, buthewasruledbyhis heartratherthanhishead, anditneededarock-like charactertostandfirmin thefaceofhisperemptory demands, blandishments andopeninsults.
Luckilyhehadforhis chiefadviserasoldierin GeneralAlanbrookewho hadaclearpicturefromthe beginningofthestrategy thatwasneeded,andwho wasstrongenoughtowithstandtheattacksofthe PrimeMinister. BrookehadbeenaCorps commanderinFrance,and hadfoughtthroughtothe evacuationatDunkirk.His experiencehadtaughthim thatonlybythebuildingup andconcentrationofallthe resourcesononemainobjectivecouldtheGermans everbesuccessfullyattacked.

FromalittlehandfulofChristiansinPalestineHis Churchhasspreadthroughouttheworld.Inspite oftheloftinessofitsmoralcodewithitsstern demandsuponweakhumannature,theChurchof Christhasgrownintothemightiestorganisationon thefaceoftheearth.Hermembershiphaspassed the430,000,000markandherGospelispreachedin everytongue.
Thetaskis,however,farfromcompleted.Indeed, accordingtotheVaticannewspaper,"L'Osservatore Romano,"itwilltakeanotherthreethousandyears attheratewearegoing.Duringthepasttwenty-eight yearswehavewonaboutfourteenmillionsouls,or approximatelyhalfamillionayear.TheVatican newspaperestimatesthepopulationoftheworldto beinexcessof2,300,00,ofwhomonlyone-thirdare baptised,andoftheselittlemorethanhalfare Catholics.
ThesituationisfurthercomplicatedbytheencroachmentofCommunism,whichhaspulledmany ChristiancountriesbehindherIronCurtain,where sheisimprisoningtheChurch'sministers,closing herschools,andseekingnotmerelytocripplebutto destroyhercompletely.Notsincethedaysofthe RomanpersecutionshastheChurchbeensubjectedto suchoppressionandtosuchdeadlyperil.
