HadMcCarthybeeninapositionofpoweryears beforethereisnodoubtbutthatChinaneednothave beenlost.ThefatefulYaltaAgreementwouldnot havebeencontractedandthewingsoftheSoviet Vulturewouldhavebeeneffectivelyclipped-in Asiaatleast.Asitturnedout,thelateSenator wasabletoclearoutfromGovernmentdepartments, secretscientificbodies,universitiesandarmedforces numbersofmenwhoseinfluenceshadbeen,and wouldincreasinglyhavebeen,baleful.Inanysuch processes,excessesandinjusticesareboundtooccur. Buttheyhavebeenmagnifiedbytheworld'sPress outofallproportion,forthatwasonecoverof cowardiceandseditionwhichneitherMcCarthynor anyothermanhasyetbeenabletopenetrateand purge.

IhavesaidthelateSenator'sfailingshavebeen magnifiedoutofproportion,andinsuchamatter proportionisthemeasureoftruth.Thereissucha thingasindividualliberty,butthereisalsosucha thingasmakinglibertyacloakformalice.And McCarthy'sseverestcriticsamongtheintelligensia didthemselveslittlecreditbeforeinvestigational bodiesbysheeruntruthsandunnecessaryevasions. Afterall,itisnomoreaninfringementoflibertyto askamanwhetherheisaCommunistthantoask himwhetherheisaCatholic.Icannotforthelife ofmeseewhyamanshouldconcealthefact,unless thefactbedisgraceful.Itmaybethatpenalties attachtoCommunistPartymembershipintheUnited States,butIcannotbutfeelthatpenaltiesshould attachtotreason,howeversincerethetraitormaybe inhistreachery.

Theineptitudeofnewspaperthoughtonthewhole greatissueaboutwhichSenatorMcCarthy'slifeand workrevolvedwasshownbytheridiculoUsphrase thatthedeceasedhadgiventheEnglishlanguagea newword-"McCarthyism."Itissimplyuntruethat thephrasehasattainednyuniversalcurrency.Itis fartruertosaytheSenatorgaveCommunistsand theirfriendsanewwordofcant,anewsloganof Left-Wingjargonforemployingjustsuchatechnique astheywerepretendingtocondemn.Thewordand theideaof"McCarthyism"isnotanunfairtestof theabilitytomakeelementarylogicaldistinctions. onesasktoomanysharp questionsandshowasort of"creepingskepticism" abouttheveryessenceof theSovietideaandsystem.

Theserieswasonthe "alarming"situationatthe SverdlovskUniversityin theUralswhereagirl-student,LilyPolonskaya,a Kosomolmemberwhoboldlyarguedagainstmany cardinalSoviettenets,had wonasizablefollowing amongherschoolmates,and nearlyconvertedevenone ofherCommunistinstructors.

Lilywasremovedfrom herpostasaKomsomol propagandistatalocalfactory,andlaterexpelled fromherKomsomolbranch. Butsuchwasthepressure ofherfriendsandadmirers thattheRedbureaucrats hadtorestorehertoher membershipwithnoother punishmentexceptareprimand.
