DuringhisaddressBishop RaffertythankedtheCommonwealthGovernmentand theDepartmentoftheArmy fortheirgenerosityingrantingthesumofZ3,000for thebuildingofthechapel.

HisGracewasaddressing some700peoplewhohad gatheredatBronte-st.,East PerthfortheofficialinaugurationofCamillus House,builtbytheSociety ofSt.VincentdePaulfor destitutemen.

TheArchbishopwasintroducedbyMr.E.M.Murray,presidentofthesociety.

Amongthedistinguished guestswere:Mr.Justice Wolff,theHon.H.Graham, MinisterforHousing(rep- resentingtheStateGovernment);Mr.D.Brand (LeaderoftheOpposition), Mr.F.Chaney,M.H.R.,Mr. K.Beazley,M.H.R.,Mr.T. Anderson(Commissionerof Police);Mr.B.Humphries (StatedirectorofCommonwealthSocialServices).

TheArchbishopsaidthat forthepastfouryearsan averageof10-15menhad assembledonthatsiteSaturdayafterSaturday,makinebricksandbuildingthe initialstagesoftheHome.

Hishearerswouldanpreelatetheextraordinary spiritanimatingthoseselflessmen.Theywerepre- paredifnecessarytobuild thewholebuildingeven thoughitwouldhavetaken aconsiderablylongertime.

When,however,anapproachwasmadetothe Governmentandthenature oftheprojectexplained,it readilyagreedtohelptothe extentofmakingagrantof 8,000.AndthenanapproachtotheLotteriesCommissionmetwithsimilar eonsideration-£8,000.

OnbehalfoftheSociety HisGraceexpressedtothe PremierandhisGovernmentthroughtheHon.the MinisterforHousing(Mr. Graham)andtothechairmanoftheLotteriesCommission(Mr.Triat)sincere gratitudefortheirsympathy,generosityandcooperationinthatverycharitableundertaking.

IftheSocietywasreceivingpublicitytoday,continuedHisGrace,itwas apublicitywhichhadbeen thrustuponit.Iftodaythe Societyhadinvitedits friends,benefactorsand, well-wisherstothatfunction,itwasnotthatit soughtpraiseandadulation.

Ratheritsoughttheir moralandfinancialsupport forthemaintenanceofthe haplessmen,irrespectiveof colourorcreed,whowould beaccommodatedwithin thewallsofCamillusHouse.

Truetotheconstitutions oftheirfounder,Frederic Ozanam,theVincentians alwaysshunnedthelimelieht.Theydidtheirwork silentlyandunostentatiously,butnonethelesseffectively.Theydevotedtheir leisurehours,andveryoften anotablepartoftheirown materialresources,inorder toalleviatedistressamong thelessfortunatemembers ofthecommunity.

TheArchbishopsaidthat thepurposeofthebuilding waswell-knowntohis

hearers.Hewouldnotdwell onthevariouscauseswhich hadbroughtthosewho wouldbeaccommodated theretothestatewhere theyfoundthemselves homelessandhungry,withoutabedandwithouta meal.

Thereweremanysuch unfortunatemeninthecity. Anditwastohelpthemnotmerelybyprovidinga bedandameal-butmore importantlystill,tohelp themrehabilitatethemselves andregaintheirself-respect thattheSocietyhadlaunchedthatventure.

Itwasagreatwork,a highlycharitablework,a workwhichdeservedthe gratitudeoftheChurchand Statealike.ThattheState appreciateditwasevident fromthegrantithadmade.

HisGracesingledoutfor specialmentiontheBrother whohadconceivedtheidea ofCamillusHouse.Forthe past35yearsormorehe hadbeentheGoodSamaritantounfortunatemen.

Itwasindicativeoftheir feelingofresponsibilitytowardsthemenoftheregu- larArmyandtheirdependantsandtothemany NationalServiceTrainees whopassedthroughthis campeachyear.

keepingwithinthelimited moneyavailable.Thetastefulfurnishingswerecarried outgyMr.L.Harris,allthe woodworkbeingofsilky oak.
