Thekitchenis25ft.x20ft., hasaprimroseceiling,pale greenwalls,blackskirting tiles,twenty-sixbuilt-in laminex-toppedcupboards, largestainlesssteelsink, giantfourhotplate"Sterlee"electricstoveandindependenthotwatersystem.

Theflooristiledwith greenandprimrosetiles andlightingisbymeansof neontube.

Thediningroomis25ft. x24ft.andisfurnishedwith chromelaminex-topped tablesandchairs.

Theentrancehallis15ft. x25ft.,theassemblyroom 38ft.x25ft.,onedormitory is50ft.x25ft.,theother 24ft.x25ft.;bothhave accesstomoderntoiletand ablutionrooms. Seven-foot-wideverandahsrunalmostthefull lengthofboththeground andtopfloors.Thenthere arethereceptionroom, oftce,staffroom,entrance hall,boilerroom,laundry andworkshop.

DreamComesTrue

CamillusHouseisthe dreamcometrueofavery humblememberoftheSt. VincentdePaulSociety. Tenyearsagohethought howgranditwouldbeif theCatholicChurchhada hometoofferthosepoor destitutemenwhohaveno home,nofriends.

Theywanderthestreets ofeverycity,scornedbythe majority,pitiedbyfew.Yet everyoneisachildofGod whoifgivenabedtosleep on,adecentenvironment, andameal,mightyetpause inhistragic,aimlesslife, lifthiseyestoheavenand say-"Godhelpme."

Thethiefonthecrossdid, andstoleheaven!Ifina thousandyearsbutoneof theseunfortunatesfound hiswaytoheaventhrough CamillusHouseallthework andtimeandmoneywould bewellspent. Thedreamwas"sold"to hisfellowVincentians,and onweek-endsandspare timethefoundationswere

Thirty-fivethousand cementbricksweremadeby littlegroupsoftheseSt. VincentdePaulmen;a Catholicarchitectdonated theplansandthebuilding wasstarted.Therewere headaches,heartachesand backaches,butthosethree miraculousmedalswerein thefoundations-andjust tenyearslaterthedream cametrue.

WhoWasCamillus?

St.Camilluswasquitea man.HewasbornonMay 25,1550,atBocchianicoin ItalyanddiedonJuly14, 1614.Todayheisknown asSt.CamillusDeLellis, theSaintoftheRedCross. Hisearlylifewasthatof asoldieradventurerandhe wasa borngambler. Woundedandwiththearmy disbandedhebecamea lonelytramp,butbythe graceofGodtheregrewin hisheartaloveforthesick andthedestituteandadesiretohelpthem.

Hegatheredasmallband aroundhimtohelphimwith thisworkandattheageof

ThusdidCamillusandthe CamillanssanctifytheRed CrossasthesymbolofunselfishChrist-likeserviceto thesick.

Noabominationofdirtor filthcoulddeterCamillus, hiswasthespiritofthe Gospelteachingthatbade menseeChristinthelowliestofHisbrethrenand proclaimthataservice donethemwasaservice donetheDivineMaster Himself.Couldthishome foroursickanddestitutebe betternamedthanCamillus House?

Itwasanticipatedthat theextraordinaryEucharisticfervourdemonstrated duringHolyWeekwould overflowinthesolemn,con- tinuingcrisiswhichfaced Australiaandtheworld.

Mr.JamesK.Walsh (pictured)whohasjust completedhisfinalyearat St.ThomasMoreCollege, haswonaCommonwealth Fellowship,worth3,500 dollars,todopost- graduateworkinLawin theUnitedStates.

Mr.Walshisthefirstin Australiatobeawarded thisscholarship.Inhisfinal exams,lastNovemberhe securedfourdistinctionsand wontheFrankEdward ParsonsandtheJ.A.Wood memorialprizes.Thisyear heispresidentoftheGuild ofUndergraduates.

Otherprizessecuredby collegeresidentswerethe LadyJamesprizesforfirst andthirdyearPhysics,won by JohnJosephMonaghanand D. tively.Donnellyrespec-

Thestandardsandideals set thebeforethechildduring yearsatschoolwere meanttohelpittodirect itslivingintheafteperiod,aswellastoenable

ittogaintheskillsnecessaryformakingaliving andleadingasatisfying humanexistence. Noexistencewassatisfyingunlessitwasaharmony, andnohumanbeingwas reallysatisfiedwithlifeif hehadnotachievedanadjustmentofallhispowersthatresultedinaharmony.

Themostperfectphysical development,alliedwith trueaestheticappreciation andintellectualperfection, demandedthecharacterformationthatcamefroma disciplined, purposeful, moralandreligiousschooling. Whencharacterwas mouldedinschool,andreligiouspracticewasinculcated,thentheenrichment ofmindandthedevelopmentofphysiquewould reachtheirfulnessinthe harmonyofhumanliving.

Inviewofallthose thingsthedutyoftheteacherbecameapparent,and thegreatnessofhisvocation wasemphasised.Hemust lovehisvocationandesteem itasavocationandnotjust asameansofearninga living. Hisattitudetowardshis pupilswouldbeoneoflove inallthetruthandgoodnessofthatword.They wouldbeviewedaspersons

Rome,April10.-Leadingthemovementtoenlightenthe nativesoftheBelgianCongoontheDarkContinentisavast systemofCatholicschools.Withmanymoreelementaryparoch- ialschoolstherethanintheUnitedStates,theChurchhasassumedamajorpartoftheburdenofprovidinganeducationforinhabitantsofthatCentraiAfricanterritory.

Despitethesefacts,theare1,245,000pupilsinthenumbersofchildrenwant- BelgianGovernmenthaselementarysystem.Theinganeducation.Atan beentrying,indirectly,to close Church-operated schoolsintheCongoby takingawaytheirGove-n-

mentsubsidiesandconconstructingStateschools.

Itiswithverygoodreason,then,thatHisHoliness PopePiusXIIisaskingthat specialprayersbesaidthis monthfortheschoolsofthe BelgianCongo.

Theirpeacefulexistence anddevelopmentisbeing threatenedbyananti-clericalGovernment,whichis settingupanewschool systeminwhichreligion andreligiousteachingarelookeduponasentirely, secondary,andnotbelong-ingamongtheessentialsof education.

Lateststatisticsshowa totalof17,596elementary schoolsintheCongoand twosmalleradjacentUnited NationsTrustTerritoriesRuandaandUrundi-which arealsoincludedinthis month'sMissionIntention oftheApostleshipofPrayer.

TheU.S.has9,568Catholicelementaryschools,with atotalenrolmentofabout 1.600,000.Accordingtothese figures,theaverageschool has370pupils.

ThattheGovernment shouldnowturnonthe Catholicschoolsseemsalmostfantastic.Asharplyanti-clericalregimecame intopowerinBelgiumin 1954.Thisregimeisdeterminedtobuildupa secular,Stateschoolsystem, cutoffentirelyfromanyreligion.

Ontheculturallevel,thevisitstotheOrient seemtoresultlargelyinsofteningofthebrainifthe outcomeoftheAnglicanbishops'tourmaybe acceptedasafaircriterion.Foritiscommonly ignoredthatthereisahugemoralissueinvolved intheactsofindividualsorgroupswhentheyissue inbenefittoCommunism.Onthereligiousplane. Butevenforsecularistsormoredeeply-dyed materialiststherearemoralproblemsalso,andthey centreabouttheethicsoftreason.Someofthem lovenottheircountryless,buttheyloveRussia more.AgreatdealofthisRed-puffingmaybe meredoctrinairesocialism,butitisdoingagreat dealofharmamongpeoplewhohavenophilosophicalanchorage.Itisacorrosiveelementinthe intellectualandpoliticallifeofthenation,allthe morescandalousinthatitisfoundmostfrequently amongpeoplefromwhomleadershipshouldbeexpected-professors,clerics,professionalmenand tradeunionbosses.

Theymightbepardonedtheirpartialityfor Marxismifanygoodflowedfromit.Inthecase ofChina,ifaChristianimpressionwerebeingmade onthatunhappypeople;iftherewasareasonable prospectofrelievingtheiroppression;orifsome informationnototherwiseavailablecouldbeobtainedforthecommongood,theexchangeofvisits

mighthaveasemblanceofjustification.Asitis, thecredulousvisitor(especiallywhenheisasympathiser)issimplyheldupasanexampleoffeebleness-hebelieves,butisunwillingtodoanything effectivetoimplementhisbelief.

Asitis,thereisnoprospectofcompassingany oneoftheseaims.CompetentChristianmissionaries onthespotareviolentlypreventedfrommaking anyimpactonthepeople.Theirtreatmenthas demonstratedthesheerlackofgoodfaithonthepart oftheRedGovernment.Moreover,theofficial natureoftheinvitations,thelackoffreecommunication,theshortnessofthevisit,ignoranceofthe language,ruleoutanyprospectofgainforthe Christiancause.

Furthermore,theevidenceofmissionarieswho havespentyearsinChinaprovidesauthoritative reportsonspiritual,materialandtechnicalconditions prevailingthere.Trainedobserverssuchasdiplomatsandpressmen,whohavewidecontactsand relativefreedomofmovement,provideinformation whichnoflit-by-nightdelegationcanhopetodo.

EvenExpertsAreManipulated

Ontheotherhand,greatharmcanensuefrom suchvisits.Anhonestmancannoteasilydissociate himselffromtheviewsexpressedbythedelegation leader,oranyspokesmanforit.Ifheisnotcommitted,heisatleastcompromised.Inaddition, whetherhewillsitornot,hispresencegivesthe delegationauniversalcharacterwhichisoftenat oddswiththefacts.IfheisaChristianhecauses scandalamongChristianswhorealisethemartyrdombeingsufferedbytheChurchinChina.

Eventhemostexperienceddelegationwillusually findthemselvesbeingmanipulatedbyskilledpropagandists.Materialandtechnicalprogressisdisplayed withouthintofthespiritualdevastationandoppressionuponwhichithasbeenbuilt.

Thegeneralstatusofthedelegation,itsfinanciai obligationtothehostGovernmentandtherulesof courtesyrelatingtoleadingquestionsandembarrassingenquiries-alloftheseputmembersatagrave moraldisadvantage.Whilebeingpolitetheymust notappeartoapproveofaregimewhichhasbeen responsibleforthegrossestcriminalacts.

Ingeneral,well-informedmenknowthatthefaith oftheCommunistPartyisalwaysindoubtandthat propagandistpurposesliebehindtheirfairestwords. InonewayoranotherallisgristtotheMarxistmill. Thefirstthreeweekswere occupiedbylecturesonthe vowsandoncommunitylife. andadiscussionperiod everyafternoonwhichgave theSistersanopportunity oftalkingoverthelectures andtheirvariousproblems.

Silencewasobservedduringtheday,thusgiving ampletimeforprivatereCollection,hencerecreation intheeveningwasdoubly appreciatedandenjoyed.A collectionofsplendidspir- itualbooksandcomprehensivemagazineswaseagerly perused.

Thelasttendayswere spentinstrictretreat,and theconferences.,forthe firstsixdays:weregiven bytheRev.FatherMurtagh, LC.Ss.R.

However,owingtohis transfertoanotherState,he wasreplacedforthefinal fourdaysbytheRev. FatherHennessy,C.Ss.R., who,too,gavemostilluminatingconferences.

FinallyafterHolyMass devotionallysungbythe Sisters'choir,thesevenReligiouspronouncedtheir finalvows,thusgiving themselvestoGodforever.

Theybothreturnedto Belframceittly,and,with theirbrother'ratherFrederick,aprotkisserat'?ilhe Society'smothe47hbuse,had justattended_ reunion celebrationattheirfather's home.

Returningtotheir,residence,thenriestswerekilledwhentheirautomobile wasstruckbyabus.
