CamillusHouseisthe dreamcometrueofavery humblememberoftheSt. VincentdePaulSociety. Tenyearsagohethought howgranditwouldbeif theCatholicChurchhada hometoofferthosepoor destitutemenwhohaveno home,nofriends.
Theywanderthestreets ofeverycity,scornedbythe majority,pitiedbyfew.Yet everyoneisachildofGod whoifgivenabedtosleep on,adecentenvironment, andameal,mightyetpause inhistragic,aimlesslife, lifthiseyestoheavenand say-"Godhelpme."
Thethiefonthecrossdid, andstoleheaven!Ifina thousandyearsbutoneof theseunfortunatesfound hiswaytoheaventhrough CamillusHouseallthework andtimeandmoneywould bewellspent. Thedreamwas"sold"to hisfellowVincentians,and onweek-endsandspare timethefoundationswere
Thirty-fivethousand cementbricksweremadeby littlegroupsoftheseSt. VincentdePaulmen;a Catholicarchitectdonated theplansandthebuilding wasstarted.Therewere headaches,heartachesand backaches,butthosethree miraculousmedalswerein thefoundations-andjust tenyearslaterthedream cametrue.

St.Camilluswasquitea man.HewasbornonMay 25,1550,atBocchianicoin ItalyanddiedonJuly14, 1614.Todayheisknown asSt.CamillusDeLellis, theSaintoftheRedCross. Hisearlylifewasthatof asoldieradventurerandhe wasa borngambler. Woundedandwiththearmy disbandedhebecamea lonelytramp,butbythe graceofGodtheregrewin hisheartaloveforthesick andthedestituteandadesiretohelpthem.

Naturally,thateducation wasonethatstartedinthe
aestheticThephysical,intellectual, andmoraldevelopmentprovidedbytheschool wereallaimedatfittingthe childtoliveafullhuman andChristianlife.The teacherandthoserespon- siblefortheplanningofthe systemhadtobearinmind thefactthatthechildmust live,notinsomeidealsurroundings,butinthedownto-earthenvironmentof humanlifeasitwasfound inanysectionofhuman society.
Thestandardsandideals set thebeforethechildduring yearsatschoolwere meanttohelpittodirect itslivingintheafteperiod,aswellastoenable
ittogaintheskillsnecessaryformakingaliving andleadingasatisfying humanexistence. Noexistencewassatisfyingunlessitwasaharmony, andnohumanbeingwas reallysatisfiedwithlifeif hehadnotachievedanadjustmentofallhispowersthatresultedinaharmony.
Themostperfectphysical development,alliedwith trueaestheticappreciation andintellectualperfection, demandedthecharacterformationthatcamefroma disciplined, purposeful, moralandreligiousschooling. Whencharacterwas mouldedinschool,andreligiouspracticewasinculcated,thentheenrichment ofmindandthedevelopmentofphysiquewould reachtheirfulnessinthe harmonyofhumanliving.

Rome,April10.-Leadingthemovementtoenlightenthe nativesoftheBelgianCongoontheDarkContinentisavast systemofCatholicschools.Withmanymoreelementaryparoch- ialschoolstherethanintheUnitedStates,theChurchhasassumedamajorpartoftheburdenofprovidinganeducationforinhabitantsofthatCentraiAfricanterritory.
Despitethesefacts,theare1,245,000pupilsinthenumbersofchildrenwant- BelgianGovernmenthaselementarysystem.Theinganeducation.Atan beentrying,indirectly,to close Church-operated schoolsintheCongoby takingawaytheirGove-n-
mentsubsidiesandconconstructingStateschools.
Itiswithverygoodreason,then,thatHisHoliness PopePiusXIIisaskingthat specialprayersbesaidthis monthfortheschoolsofthe BelgianCongo.
Theirpeacefulexistence anddevelopmentisbeing threatenedbyananti-clericalGovernment,whichis settingupanewschool systeminwhichreligion andreligiousteachingarelookeduponasentirely, secondary,andnotbelong-ingamongtheessentialsof education.
Lateststatisticsshowa totalof17,596elementary schoolsintheCongoand twosmalleradjacentUnited NationsTrustTerritoriesRuandaandUrundi-which arealsoincludedinthis month'sMissionIntention oftheApostleshipofPrayer.
TheU.S.has9,568Catholicelementaryschools,with atotalenrolmentofabout 1.600,000.Accordingtothese figures,theaverageschool has370pupils.

ExceptTheReds
ExchangeswithCommunistChinaonthecultural andmercantilelevelsareincreasing,withnoparticularobjectiveexceptthatofpropagandain favourofRedChina'sadmissiontoU.N.andits recognitionbytheAustralianGovernment.Now ineachoftheseexpeditions,whetherofbishops, doctors,universitystudentsormerchants,itisvery difficulttoseewhatbenefitsaccruetothiscountry, whileitisverypatentthattheCommunistsderive sufficientadvantagestodesiretheircontinuationand expansion.Ineffect,thebenefitsderivedoranticipatedbythiscountryarenearlynegligible.What tradeexchangeamountstoisaconvenientdisposal ofwooltopsandsomeenquiriesaboutfarm machinery.
Ontheculturallevel,thevisitstotheOrient seemtoresultlargelyinsofteningofthebrainifthe outcomeoftheAnglicanbishops'tourmaybe acceptedasafaircriterion.Foritiscommonly ignoredthatthereisahugemoralissueinvolved intheactsofindividualsorgroupswhentheyissue inbenefittoCommunism.Onthereligiousplane. Communismisagiganticheresywithwhichno Christianisentitledtoco-operateinanyfashion whatever.Thereis(orhasbeen)bothinEurope andAsia,aschoolofthoughtwhichimaginedcollaborationwasdesirableandpossible.Whathappenedtothemishistory.Theybecameeitherapostateordisillusionedtoolate.
Butevenforsecularistsormoredeeply-dyed materialiststherearemoralproblemsalso,andthey centreabouttheethicsoftreason.Someofthem lovenottheircountryless,buttheyloveRussia more.AgreatdealofthisRed-puffingmaybe meredoctrinairesocialism,butitisdoingagreat dealofharmamongpeoplewhohavenophilosophicalanchorage.Itisacorrosiveelementinthe intellectualandpoliticallifeofthenation,allthe morescandalousinthatitisfoundmostfrequently amongpeoplefromwhomleadershipshouldbeexpected-professors,clerics,professionalmenand tradeunionbosses.
Theymightbepardonedtheirpartialityfor Marxismifanygoodflowedfromit.Inthecase ofChina,ifaChristianimpressionwerebeingmade onthatunhappypeople;iftherewasareasonable prospectofrelievingtheiroppression;orifsome informationnototherwiseavailablecouldbeobtainedforthecommongood,theexchangeofvisits

Furthermore,theevidenceofmissionarieswho havespentyearsinChinaprovidesauthoritative reportsonspiritual,materialandtechnicalconditions prevailingthere.Trainedobserverssuchasdiplomatsandpressmen,whohavewidecontactsand relativefreedomofmovement,provideinformation whichnoflit-by-nightdelegationcanhopetodo.
EvenExpertsAreManipulated
Ontheotherhand,greatharmcanensuefrom suchvisits.Anhonestmancannoteasilydissociate himselffromtheviewsexpressedbythedelegation leader,oranyspokesmanforit.Ifheisnotcommitted,heisatleastcompromised.Inaddition, whetherhewillsitornot,hispresencegivesthe delegationauniversalcharacterwhichisoftenat oddswiththefacts.IfheisaChristianhecauses scandalamongChristianswhorealisethemartyrdombeingsufferedbytheChurchinChina.
Eventhemostexperienceddelegationwillusually findthemselvesbeingmanipulatedbyskilledpropagandists.Materialandtechnicalprogressisdisplayed withouthintofthespiritualdevastationandoppressionuponwhichithasbeenbuilt.
Thegeneralstatusofthedelegation,itsfinanciai obligationtothehostGovernmentandtherulesof courtesyrelatingtoleadingquestionsandembarrassingenquiries-alloftheseputmembersatagrave moraldisadvantage.Whilebeingpolitetheymust notappeartoapproveofaregimewhichhasbeen responsibleforthegrossestcriminalacts.
Ingeneral,well-informedmenknowthatthefaith oftheCommunistPartyisalwaysindoubtandthat propagandistpurposesliebehindtheirfairestwords. InonewayoranotherallisgristtotheMarxistmill.
