WhatthePopeintendsbythisextraordinaryliberalityandwhattheChurchmay legitimatelyanticipateisaprodigious growthingraceamongthefaithful.Itis thefundamentalanswerwhichtheMystical BodyofChristmustmaketoaworldsteeped inmaterialism.Sincethebasicmalaiseof ourtimeisnottobefoundinpoliticsor economicsbutintheheartofman,itisfrom hisinmostspiritthatrenewalmustissue forth.

Butitispreciselyherethatamajorheresy ofourdayentersin.Itbelievesthatman iscapableofrenewinghimself,indeedthat heisself-sufficient.Yetnotalonethetruths oftheChristianfaith,butthefactsofhistory andofexperiencepointunmistakablytothe realityofOriginalSin.Manisnotperfect norisheperfectablethroughhisownefforts. ManneedsGodasheneedsoxygen.Andit ischieflythroughthesacramentalchannels openedthroughthedeathofChristOurLord thatthisnewnessoflifeonasupernatural planeisplacedwithinhumangrasp."WithoutMeyoucandonothing"istrueevenof thenaturallife(forGodpreserveseveryman

Soitisthat,withthe uniquefacilitiesnowofferedbytheChurchfor thereceptionofHoly Communion,weexhort thefaithfultoseizeevery opportunityofpartaking oftheBlessedEucharist andsotoincreasewithin themselvestheintensity oftheDivineLife.Inthis waytheywillfindthe temptationsoflifeeasier toresistandanincrease ofcharityinalltheir activities.

OurCatholicpeoplemustalsobemindfulofthefactthatpersecutionmaybetheir lotinthenotdistantfuture.The"satanic scourge"ofCommunismpressesdownona largeareaoftheearth'ssurfaceandona largesegmentofitspopulation.Itisnot inconceivablethatourcountry,soinsignificantinpopulationandsoisolatedfromits friends,maytastethebitternessofRed domination.Shouldthattragedycometo pass(andwepraydailythatGodwillpreserveourcountryasaChristiannation)the constancyoftheconfessorsandtheheroism ofthemartyrswillbecalledforthfromeach ofus.Butonlythosewhohaveattainedto ahighdegreeofspiritualintimacywithGod willbeadequatelypreparedtorisetothe pitchofheroism.

HenceweearnestlyaskourCatholic peopleoftheArchdiocesetorenewthefull vigourofthesacramentallifeatthisholy seasonofEasterandtocontinueitinthe anxiousyearsthatlieahead.Theywilldo welltorememberthepledgethatOurDivine Lordleftuswiththeineffablegiftofthe Eucharist:"HethateatethMyfleshand drinkethMybloodhatheverlastinglife;and Iwillraisehimupinthelastday."

Besidesthedoctrineofthepriesthoodandthe Eucharist,theceremonyofHolyThursdayemphasises theNewCommandment:"Ihaveanewcommandment togiveyou,thatyouaretoloveoneanother;that yourloveforoneanotheristobeliketheloveI haveborneyou."TheGospelpassagerecalls"the uttermostproofofhislove,"whichOurLordgavethe Apostlesthatnight:"HelaidHisgarmentsaside,took atowelandputitaboutHim;thenHepouredwater intoabasinandbegantowashthefeetofhisdisciples,wipingthemwiththetowel andHesaid tothem,Ihavebeensettingyouanexample,which willteachyouinyourturntodowhatIhavedone foryou.Believemenoslavecanbegreaterthanhis master,noapostlegreaterthanhebywhomhewas sent."

TheChurchwantsherprieststofollowthisexample bytheirhumbleanddevotedcareoftheflockscommittedtothem,servantsnotmasters.TheChurch lovestore-enacttheGospelscenesandsoshesuggests toprieststhattheyre-enactthewashingofthefeet intheirparishchurchesonHolyThursdayasthey celebratetheLastSupper.Howappropriateitisand howvividlyitimpressesOurLord'scommandon priestandpeoplealike.

ServantsOfGodWashLaymen'sFeet

Theceremonyisquitesimple:twelvelaymen areseatedalongthefrontofthesanctuary;thepriest kneelinginfrontofeachpourswaterovertheirfeet andwipesthemwithatowel.TheSt.Vincentde Paulmembers,apostlesofcharity,arequitewilling totakepartinthisritewhichpreachescharityand brotherlylovesovividly.Surelyweshouldnotallow shynessorembarrassment(reallyProtestantinits origin)todeprivethepeople(andourselves)ofthis strikinglesson.Allovertheworld,andinsomeof thechurchesofourowncity,bishopsandpriestswill bekneelingtowashthefeetoflaymen,likeChrist theirLord,servants,notmasters.

TheMassofHolyThursdayhasamoodofjoy,but withalanunderlyingfeelingofsorrow.Wearejoyfulandthankfulforthegreatgiftswehavereceived fromChrist.TheMassvestmentsarewhite,thebells peeljoyfullyatthe"Gloria,"butafterthatthereis silence,noorgan,nobells;amoodofsorrowcomes overChrist'sfamilyatthethoughtofHisapproaching sufferinganddeath.AfterMassthepriesttakesthe ciboriumcontainingthehostsforCommuniononGeed Fridayinprocessiontoasidechapel.Duringthe nightwekeepwatchbeforetheBlessedSacrament.

DuringthistimewecanrecallthejourneyOur LordmadedownthroughthevalleytotheGardenof Gethsemani,Hisagonythere,HiscapturebyJudas andthesoldiers,theApostlesfleeinganddeserting, Histrialintheearlyhoursofthemorning,the scourgingandcrowningandmockery-inshort,the bestwaytospendthesehoursistoreadthePassion, whichistheaccountofalltheseeventsrecordedfor usbyeye-witnesses.ThiswillbeanexcellentpreparationforGoodFridayandwillbringusvery closetothemindandfeelingsofOurSaviourduring thosehours.

PassingOverFromDeathToLife

ItisquitewrongtocalltheGoodFridayceremony "TheMassofthePre-Sanctified."Perhapsthebest titleforitis"ThePassionandDeathofOurLord." Itisheldintheafternoonaboutthreeo'clock.It consistsoffourparts:(1)TheReadingofthePassion. (2)PrayersfortheNeedsoftheHumanRace.(3) TheAdorationoftheCross.(4)TheCommunion Service.

Whenthepriestentersthesanctuaryheliesprostrateonthefloorforafewmomentstosymbolisethe humanraceweigheddownbysinwaitingforGodto redeemit.TwolessonsfromtheOldTestamentfollow asanintroductiontothePassion.ThefirstfromOsee representsthevoiceofGodcomplainingofthesinful faithlessnessofmenwhichisthecauseofChrist's death:"Yourloveisasafleetingcloudatdaybreak, andasthedewthatfastdisappearsinthemorning." ThesecondlessonrecallstheJewishsacrificeofthe Passover;anunblemishedlambwassacrificedand eatenbythefamilytocommemoratethedeliveryof theJewishracefromtheslaveryofEgypt.

ChristisourunblemishedPaschorPassoverlamb whoisofferedinsacrificeontheCross,and,delivered fromtheslaveryofSatanbyhisblood,weareableto

"passover"fromalifeofsintoanewlife.Thenwe readthePassionfromtheGospelofSt.John-St. Johnwastherehimselfandhassimplywrittendown whathesawandheard.Wecouldnotbetherein person,butthenextbestthingistoreadtheaccount fromapersonwhostoodatthefootoftheCrossthat day.Inmanychurchesitisthecustomtohavethe PassionreadinEnglishforthepeoplewhilethe priestsaysitinLatin.Agroupofthreereadersonethenarrator,oneChrist,andonefortheother characters-bringssomethingofthedramaintothe reading.

WholeHumanRaceIsBoughtBack

Thepriestnowcomestothecentreofthealtar andsingssolemnprayersforalltheneedsofmankind.Heannouncestheintentionoftheprayer;all kneelinprivateprayerforafewminutes,thecongregationstandsandthepriestsolemnlysingstheprayer. TheintentionsarefirstlyforthePope,thenforthe Bishop,clergy,brothers,nunsandparishioners,forall theGovernmentsoftheworld,fortheconvertswho aretobebaptisedonHolySaturday,fortheconversionofProtestants,theJews,andpagans.ByHis deathontheCrossOurLordmeritedallthegraces mankindwillneedtotheveryendoftheworld. ThesegraceswonforusbyChristare,asitwere, storedupforusinheaven,andsotheChurchprays or.GoodFridaythatGodwillgrantthesegracesto allinneedofspiritualhelp.

InmakingtheWayoftheCrossonGoodFriday morningwedwellonthephysicalandmentalsuffering ofOurLord,andthewilfulevilofourpersonal sinswhichcausedHissuffering.Thesuffering,dyingChristisheretheobjectofourlove.In theafternoonceremonyitisdifferent-theCrossbecomestheglorioussymbolofChrist'svictoryand achievement.LiftedupontheCrosstohangbetween

heavenandearth,ChristwastheGreatHighPriest buyingbackthewholehumanracefromthebondage ofSatanbyHissacrifice,restoringfriendshipbetween Godandman,meritinggraceandgloryforallmen.

Thisisnottragicandscornful;thisisatriumph,a greatachievement,theredemptionwhichmenhave longedforthroughallthelongcenturiessincethe fallofAdamandEve.Thisisthepowertoconquer evilwhicheveryman,deepinhisheart,desiresto haveworkingandvictoriousinhisownlife.Andso, onGoodFridayafternoon,weseeChristnotsomuch asatragic,dyingvictimofsin,butratherasour HighPriestachievingourredemptiononthe altaroftheCross,ourRedeemer-Kingtriumphing onHisCross.Perhapsthecrucifixthatweusefor thisceremonyshouldconveythis-notalanguishing, broken,deadChrist,butChrist,majestic,powerful, living,triumphingandreigning,ontheCross.

Theveiledcrossiscarriedonhighthroughthe churchtothesanctuaryandinthreestagesitis revealedforalltobeholdwiththeinvitationfrom thepriest,"LookhereatthewoodoftheCrosson whichhashungthesalvationoftheworld."The choirreplies,"Comeletusadore,"andeveryone kneelstoworshiptheimageoftheGod-Redeemer.
