Itwasanunhappycoincidencethatjustatthe timetheEvatt-LabourconferenceinBrisbanewas repealingits1953policyinfavourofStateaidto denominationalschools,theCosgroveLabourGovernmentinTasmaniashouldhavebeendefeatedfor thesecondtimeintheLegislativeCouncilina measuredesignedtosecurejusticefornon-State schools.Thisrepresentsaseriousblowtoalarge minorityofparentswhopaytwicefortheprivilege ofhavingtheirchildrentaughtinthewaytheir consciencedemands.Itwillremain,however,as thechiefmonumentofMr.Cosgrove's'political careerthatheattemptedtoremedythegraveand growingsocialanomalyoftheminoritypayingfor theeducationofthechildrenofthemajority,while atthesametimebeingscarcelyabletomaintain theirownschools.

Despiteeverythingthatitstotalitarianmasters havedone,someCatholicsbelievetheycanclingto thefragmentedbodyingoodconscience.Ithas beenarguedthatiftheycohesetheretheymayin thelongrunmakethecounselsofsanityandunity heard.Itwasalwaysadifficultpositiontomaintain, butitmayhavefaintjustification.Butnowthe axehasbeenlaidtotherootofthetree.Forneither EvattnorChamberlainispreparedtohaveCatholic sparringpartners.Itseemsthatitispossibletohave apoliticalpartywithoutmembership.Insucha casetheCatholiciswellandtrulyoutonalimb. Ingoodfaithhewantstostayin,buttheleaders don'twanthim.Whatheistodoisamatterwhich itwillbeinterestingtoobserve.

Church'sRightInSocialIssue

Theopinionofhiscontemporaries,attestedand magnifiedbyposterity,wasunanimousinrecognis- ingthatPopeLeoXIIIwasaremarkableman.His celebratedLettersontheoriginofcivilpower,on humanliberty,andonSocialismelectrifiedhisageandalonewouldhavemadehis-nameandhiswork imperishable.Butitisnotontheseprimarilythat histitletohistoricgreatnessrests.Leo'sfullstature isseenintheperspectiveofhistorythroughthe pagesof manifesto"RerumNovarum."Throughthissplendid onthe"ConditionsoftheWorkingClasses" theUniversalFatherspoketothewholeworldon theuniversalquestion.Byitheenteredintothe pooresthomesoftheoppressedworkersofevery nation,andintheStygiandarknessoftheindustrial chaosofthosetimes,theyatlastknewthattheyhad forfatherandfriendthehighestmoralauthorityon earth.Leo'sfigurealsobestrodelikeacolossusthe factorieswheremengrewfatonthemiseriesof thedefencelesspoor.Hecame,through"Rerum Novarum,"intothepalatialhomesalso,buthishand wasnotupraisedinblessingoverthem.Ratheris carriedthewhipofcordswherewithhisMaster beforehimhadfloggedthehuckstersfortheir desecratonofholythings.

Yetitisdepressingsixty-sixyearsafter"Rerum Novarum,"stilltofindpeople,evenCatholics,who questiontheChurch'srightinthematter.Twenty- sixyearsagoPopePiusXIfounditnecessaryto establishthebasisoftheauthorityoftheChurch insocialandeconomicspheres.Hence,afterreviewingtheuniversaleffectsofLeo'sEncyclicalduring fortyyears,he"laiddowntheprinciple,longsince clearlyestablishedbyLeoXIII,thatitisOurright andourdutytodealauthoritativelywithsocialand economicproblems."Ifitwerepossibletohold thatpaganconceptionoflifewhereinitsvarious activitiesaresetinseparatewater-tightcompartments,itwouldgreatlysimplifymatters.Wecould claimquiteclearlythatwhateverisofasacred character,whateverbelongsofitsownnature,or byreasonoftheendtowhichitisreferredtothe salvationofsoulsandtheworshipofGod,issubject tothepowerandjudgmentoftheChurch.Onthe otherhand,whateverisrangedundertheciviland politicalordershouldbesubjectsolelytocivil authority.Butunhappilylifeisnotlikethat. Thingsoverlap.Sothatsocialandeconomicprob- lemsmustinevitablyinvolvemoralissues,questions ofjusticeandcharity.

TheprincipleswhichPopeLeoenunciatedwere directedtothebridgingofthisunnaturalchasm whichinpointoffactneverhadanysubstance,but wasarationalisationonthepartoftriumphant Capitalism.Nonetheless,whiletherewassome improvementinsocialconditions,thisbreach widened,sothatfortyyearslaterPiusXIselected asthechiefdisorderofthemodernworld,theruin ofsouls;further,heindicatedthattheeconomic environmentwaschieflyresponsible.Duringthe lastgenerationwehaveseenthecare-free,confident CapitalismofVictoriandaysshatteredinitserenity, largelybytwoGreatWarsandsubsequenteconomic "depressions."Butitsverydecaybroughtforthnewdangers.Therewerevultureswaitingtoswoop downontheenfeebledeconomicbody.Communism andthenewer"powerpolitics"ofEuropeemergedcausingthePapacysuchconcernthattwoEncyclicals weredevotedtothemduringthePontificateofPius XI.ButeveninthedecadentreignofCapitalism afinalefforthasandisbeingmadetosavethe situation,largelybyaturnovertoStateCapitalism. Thetwostarsofthe show,RobertTaylorand DeborahKerr,asusual gaveoftheirtalentstothe bestoftheirability.

RobertTaylorasishis wont,strodeonandoff thescreenlookingintenselymasculineand "wearingthehero'smantle."

MissKerr,ontheother hand,succeededinlookingmostladylike,and appearing,toallintents andpurposes,tobethe idealheroine.

Onecanreadilyappre- ciatethefactthatittook her13yearsofstarringas a"goodie,"beforeshe waspermittedto"lether hairdown,"andplaya"baddie."Sheperforms bothwithgreatskill.

Unfortunately,owingto theHollywoodmaniafor typecasting,onewas neverquiteabletodisassociateRobertTaylor from-RobertTaylorandtheparthewasplay- ing.Forthatmatter,the
