MonsignorCollins).Hesaid thatthezealoftheMon-intheircommunitysprayers. signorforthesocietyhad beenformanyyearstheThefollowingdonations drivingforcebehindthe'werereceived:branchandmembersrejoicedinthehonourwhichhad beenconferredonhim.

Membershiphadbeen wellmaintainedduringthe past12months,although therewasscopeforimprovementandthiswasa matterwhichmightengage theattentionoftheincomingexecutive.

Closetohalfofthearea'sCatholicsliveherein Lebanon,smallestnationintheregion,butthereare CatholicminoritiesinallArabcountriesaswellas Israel.

Catholics,however,makeuplessthanaquarterof theregion'sChristianpopulation.Inadditiontothe MiddleEast's1,131,888Catholics,therearealmost 200,000Protestants,andmorethan3,300,000members ofOrthodoxcommunities.

Inthefirstofthesetwo cases,thenatureofthecomplaintfromwhichthe patientwassaidtohave beensufferinghadnoevidencewhatevertosupport suchadiagnosis.Inthe second,thetroublehadbeen aslippeddisc,whichoften rightsitself,oryieldsquite naturallytomanipulative treatment.

Thecommissionconcludedwiththestatementthat thereisnoevidencethat treatmentbythesefaith healerscanpermanently cureanyphysicalandorganicillnesswherenormal medicaltreatmenthasfailed.

Theclubdidnotpossess anycourts,butthatwas onlyadetailtothesepio-neers.The-SistersofMercy verykindlymadeland availableforthepurpose.

Thecontouroftheland madenecessaryanimmense amountofhardlabourto levelandterraceittomake provisionfortwocourts.

Forabout12monthsthe malemembersandseveral oftheoldermembersof Hibernianbranch(whodidnothaveanyintentionof everplayingtennis)slaved withshovelsandwheelbarrowsandeventuallythe landwasreadyforthelay- ingofcourts.

Father Moloney(nowMonsignor) lenttheclub£100 tohelptodefraythecost, thesubscriptionsofthe memberspaidduringthe previousyearprovidingthe balanceofthemoneyrequired.

AssociationFormed

In1927theclubbecame anaccomplishedfactand therewasagrandopening ceremonyperformedbythe lateMonsignorVerling,V.G. supportedbyFatherMoloney.

Practicallynoneofthe membershadplayedtennis before, wonderfulbuttheymanifested keennessandenthusiasmandsoon,withthe guidanceofafewfairlyexperiencedplayerstheyattained goodstandard.

Oneofthebeginners, MaryO'Mahony(nowMary Prindiville).afterafew yearswontheStateLadies' singleschampionship,tothe deliehtofclubmembers.

Withtheapprobationand supportofthelateArchbishopClune,theCatholic TennisAssociationofWesternAustraliawasestablishedin1927.Thefourclubs theninexistencewereSt Joachim's,VictoriaPark: TheresianClub,Inglewood; WattleClub,MidlandJunction,andSt.Mary's,Leederville.

Arrangementsweremade forregularinter-clubpennants.theprincipaltrophy beingalargesilvercuppre- sentedbytheArchbishopas aperpetualtrophysetaside forthewinningclubeach yearinthehighestor"A" gradecompetition. St.Mary'sattaineda leadingplaceintheAssociation'sactivitiesbothon andoffthecourts.

Theoldermembersrememberwithdelightthose earlieryearsofCatholic Tennis.Manyofthemhave thebestofgoodreasonsfor beingthankfulfortheinspirationthatbroughtthe clubsandassociationinto existence,inasmuchasit providedCatholicwivesand Catholichusbands.

Inacoupleoftheclubs practicallyeverymantook untohimselfashiswifea memberofhisclub,and thereweremanyinter-club marriages.

Themainobjectofthe Associationandtheclubs wasreachedinfullmeasure.

Someoftheoldermembers-ofSt.Mary'sforesaw thatsoonerorlatertheconventlandwouldnotbe availablebecauseitwould beneededforschoolbuildingsandenquirieswere madewithaviewtoacquir- ingtheclub'sownland.

Eventuallyin1936the landinBritannia-roadwas acquired,fourcourtslaid down,theoldpavilionshiftedandSt.Mary'scommencedanewandvery successfulera.Itwassuccessfulbecauseoftheselfsacrificingeffortsofthe

ThisobservationwasmadeherebyFides, CatholicMissionnewsagency,inareport ontheChurchinScandinavia.

Fromamissionaryviewpoint,itsaid,the threeScandinaviancountries,Denmark,NorwayandSwedenarerichfieldsforconversionstoCatholicism,thoughmostofthe peopleinthosecountriesareatleastnominallyChristian.

Ninety-sixpercentofthepeopleofScandinavia,itnoted,belongtotheofficialstate church,whichisLutheran.However,only aboutfourpercentgotochurch.
