Mr.O'Brienopenedhis reportbyofferingthe branch'sfelicitationstothe spiritualdirector(Rt.Rev. MonsignorCollins).Hesaid thatthezealoftheMon-intheircommunitysprayers. signorforthesocietyhad beenformanyyearstheThefollowingdonations drivingforcebehindthe'werereceived:branchandmembersrejoicedinthehonourwhichhad beenconferredonhim.

Membershiphadbeen wellmaintainedduringthe past12months,although therewasscopeforimprovementandthiswasa matterwhichmightengage theattentionoftheincomingexecutive.

Ayearofgratifyingprogresswasreportedbythe secretary(Mr.D.O'Brien) totheannualmeetingof theShentonParkHoly NameSocietyheldonSundaynightlast.

Mr.O'Brienopenedhis reportbyofferingthe branch'sfelicitationstothe spiritualdirector(Rt.Rev. MonsignorCollins).Hesaid thatthezealoftheMonsignorforthesocietyhad beenformanyyearsthe drivingforcebehindthe' branchandmembersrejoicedinthehonourwhichhad beenconferredonhim.

Membershiphadbeen wellmaintainedduringthe past12months,although therewasscopeforimprovementandthiswasa matterwhichmightengage, theattentionoftheincomingexecutive.

Thebranchhadliberally supportedtheannualrally, hadbeenrepresentedbya largecontingentatthe Aquinasprocessionand manymembershadmade theretreats.

TheattendanceatHoly Communionfortheyearwas 78percent,althoughthe figuresforeveningdevotions indicatedthatmanymem- berswerenottakingtheir pledgeonadmissiontothe societyinthisrespectas seriouslyastheymight.

MonsignorCollinscongratulatedthebranchonthe resultswhichattendedtheir effortsduringthepastyear. Individualmembershad beenzealousintheirendeavourstofurthertheinterestsofthesociety.

SincetheSecondWorld War,theSoviethasannexed theBalticStates,Poland, Rumania,Bulgaria,Eastern Germany,andbroughtManchuriaandChinaunderher control.

Inalittleovertenyears shehascapturedalarge fractionoftheworld's populationandisexploitingitintheRussianinterest inthemostruthlessfashion.

Peopleoftenthinkand speakofRussiaasifitwere asinglenation.Itisnot. TheSovietiscomposedof manynationalgroups,one ofwhich-theRussiandominatestheothersby force.Amongthelargestof theseoppressednationsis theUkrainian,whichisover 30millionsinnumber.

TheUkrainians,whooccupyoneofthemostfertile plainsintheworld,have theirownlanguageandculture.Their"Experience withRussia"isnarratedin thisbook.Inthe17thcentury,theywereafree people.

ForhelpagainsttheLithuaniansandPoles,they madeamilitaryalliance withtheRussians,who madeuseofthetreatyto claimoverlordshipofthe Ukraineandgraduallyconqueredit.Whenthepeople resisted,therevoltwasput downinthefashionthe Soviethasmadeusfamiliar with-thousandsmurdered, othersdeportedordrafted intoslavelabour.

Theoldermembersrememberwithdelightthose earlieryearsofCatholic Tennis.Manyofthemhave thebestofgoodreasonsfor beingthankfulfortheinspirationthatbroughtthe clubsandassociationinto existence,inasmuchasit providedCatholicwivesand Catholichusbands.

Inacoupleoftheclubs practicallyeverymantook untohimselfashiswifea memberofhisclub,and thereweremanyinter-club marriages.

Themainobjectofthe Associationandtheclubs wasreachedinfullmeasure.

Someoftheoldermembers-ofSt.Mary'sforesaw thatsoonerorlatertheconventlandwouldnotbe availablebecauseitwould beneededforschoolbuildingsandenquirieswere madewithaviewtoacquir- ingtheclub'sownland.

Eventuallyin1936the landinBritannia-roadwas acquired,fourcourtslaid down,theoldpavilionshiftedandSt.Mary'scommencedanewandvery successfulera.Itwassuccessfulbecauseoftheselfsacrificingeffortsofthe
