Alphonse,atthetimethisgloriousdisastertohis worldlydreamstookplace,wasonapleasuretour, forhefirmlybelievedinenjoyinghisuncle'sbank credit.Besides,heprobablythoughtthathedidn't havemuchtimetoenjoyhispleasure-lovinglife;he hadrecentlybecomeengagedtooneofhisrichand beautifulnieces.

Rome,forsuchagaytourist,wasnotthecityof thePopes,theheartofChristendom.Infact,hewas notalittleamazedathowhecametobeinRomeat all.Moreover,whatno-goodinfluencehadbrought himintocontactwiththeaudaciousChristian,Baron deBussiere?Alphonsedidnotknow;nordidhe careverymuch.TheChurchonlydelightedhimas theobjectofhissarcasm.

OnedaytheBaronaskedhisfriend,whowasjoyfullyabouttoquitRome:"Willyoupromisetowear whatIamgoingtogiveyou?"Surprisemingledwith disgustasAlphonsesawamiraculousmedalbeing offeredhim!

TheChristianreasoned:"Accordingtoyourideas youcanhavenofeelingonthesubjectonewayor another,whereasyouwouldbegivingmethegreatest pleasure.

Tocomedowntoamoreearthylevel,oneofthe hopesofdefeatingatheistic'Communismliesinthe frustrationoftheRussianpeoplethemselves.That isaphenomenonwhichwasmadeplainbythe actionofSovietsoldiersinHungaryandonewhich wouldbemoreextensivebutforfearofreprisals againstrelativesintheSoviet.Butitisanavenue whichlendsitselftoexploitationbypsychological propagandaandonewhichhasbeenneglectedby theWestbecause.presumably,ofvainhopesthat "co-existence"mightjustbarelybepossible.Hungaryhasforeverdispelledthatdreamandjustas theSoviethasnothesitatedatcovertmilitary actionagainstthedemocraciesinKorea,IndoChina,EgyptandtheMiddleEastgenerally,so theWestshouldnotbedeterredfromevery measureshortofopenwartowidenthecrackin theCommunistEmpire.

ItiscommonknowledgethroughoutEuropethat Krushchevisadrunkard.Andthereisnoquestion ofcharacterassassinationinthecaseofaman whoopenelyproclaimsthefactasCzarNikitadid twiceatMoscowreceptionsduringthepastweek. ItisrelatedthatwhenBishopGibneywasinRome onanadliminavisithehadanaudiencewithPope Leo.HetoldtheHolyFatherhehadtwochurches adjacenttotheCathedral,onenamedSt.Mary's andtheotherunnamed.

TheHolyFatherissaidtohavereplied:"Callit afterme."AsLeoXIII'snamewasGiaochinoPecci, thechurchcametobededicatedtoSt.Joachim.

Thestatueoutsidethechurchistheonlystatueof thesaintintheState.

Itiscastinwhitecementandsurroundedbycircularbrickwork.Life-sized,itismountedonstones whichvirtuallyformashrinewithkneelers.Allthis workwasdonebyvoluntarylabourunderthedirectionofMr.FrankBrown.

ThefirstMassintheVictoriaParkdistrictwas offeredintheStateschoolduringamissiongivenby PassionistFathersin1896.ThenMasswassaidin thehomeofMr.Claffeyfrom1897.

OnJan.24,1898BishopGibneyblessedandopened thefirstchurch.Since1920,whentheboys'clubwas remodelled,ithasservedasachurchofnecessityuntil threatenedwithdemolitionbyagale.

ThelateMonsignorFaganwasappointedfirstresidentpriestofVictoriaParkin1907.Hewassuceeded in1911bythelateDeanO'Reilly.WhentheDean diedin1916,theRev.H.Kearinwasappointedlocum tenforthelateFatherHayesduringhismilitary seeabroadwiththefirstA.I.F.

FatherHayesreturnedin1919andFatherKearin wastransferredtoBeverley,VictoriaParkparishat thatstageincludedBelmontandallthesettledareas toArmadale.

In1920theboys'clubwasbuiltandbecamea "churchofnecessity."

FatherHayeswastransferredtoBunburyin1929 andDeanKielysucceededtothechargeoftheparish.

Onhisdeathin1932thelateDeanBrennanwas appointedparishpriest.
