FatherVaccarisaysthat, tothemultitude frothemount,Christ quedtheoldlawofMoses andthenaddedHisperfectionofit:
"Itwassaid,moreover, `Whoeverputsawayhis wife,lethimgivehera writtennoticeofdismissal.'
ButIsaytoyouthateveryonewhoputsawayhiswife, saveonaccountofimmorality,causeshertocommit adultery;andhewhomarriesawomanwhohasbeen putawaycommitsadultery." (Matt.5,31-32.)
LaterinthesameGospel, Christ,speakingtothe Pharisees,repeatsthesame words(Matt.19,8-9).
LingualDivergence
FatherVaccarisaysthe phrase'saveonaccountof immorality"hasbeentaken bysometomeanthatunfaithfulnessonthepartof thespouseisjustifiable groundsfordivorceandthat Christpermitsthisoneexception.
However, afterexamining thesephrasesfromthe standpointoflinguistics, FatherVaccaripointsoutthattheoriginalGreekin whichthetextcomesdown tousdoesnotdistinguish betweenamarriedwoman orwifeandanunmarried woman.
NeitherdidtheAramaic languagespokenbyChrist andHisdisciples.Therefore,theJesuitstates,the passageshouldbemoreaccuratelytranslatedas"whoeverputsawayhiswoman," not"wife."
Moreover,thearticleasserts,thetranslationofthe word"immorality"isnot precise.
Tracingthetextback throughtheGreektothe Aramaiclanguageofthe
brewoftheoldlaw,Father Vaccarishowsthatthe Hebrewword"zenut,"which correspondstotheGreek wordtranslatedas"immorality,"isatechnicallegal termwhichmeans,not"immorality"or"fornication," but"concubinage"or"invalidunion."
Inotherwords,Father Vaccarisays,Christissayingthat"commonlawmarriage"orconcubinage, unionsfreeoflegalandreligioussanction,areinvalid andnotbindingintheeyes ofGod.
Thepassages, therefore, donotprovideanexception ofany divorcekindsanctioning wherethereisvalid marriage, thepriestscholar concludes.
