VaticanCity,July21.-VaticanRadio, commentingonaSovietpamphletbeingcirculatedinRome,saysitisaclearindication thatnothinghaschangedinRussiabetween communismandreligion.

Thepamphlet,distributed bythePan-SovietSociety forthediffusionofPolitical andScientificCulture, teachesyouththathumility anddependenceuponGod aredevicesbywhichreligiontrapstheweak-minded.

Thepamphletshows clearly,saidVaticanRadio, thatalltheconcessions whichhavebeenorwillbe grantedbySovietauthoritiesinmattersofreligion havenothingmorethana tacticalmeaningandcannotbepermanent.

Itisgenerallysohardto imagine:"Whatadvice wouldsuchandsuchasaint giveme,ifIcouldmeethim todayintheflesh?"And wereourimaginationable tosupplyuswiththe answer,itwouldstillbe hardtofindhowwe,inour circumstances,couldapply justthatadvicetoourselves.

ButwithSt.Ignatiusitis quitesimple.Roughly speakingyoumaysaythere wasonlyonepieceofadviceheevergavetoanybody,andthatwas:"Gointoretreat."

UnusualFeatures

St.Ignatiusdidnotthink tofoundanorderbuthe did.TheSocietyofJesus isthefruitofIgnatiusand initweseehim,asinhim weseeit.

stilltocomebearersofrichresourcesandtalentsto theAustraliancontinent.Withtheirgiftsoftradition,culture,andtrainingtheywouldbegreat assetstoAustralia.Everyattempttoattractthem tothoseNorthernregionsshouldbemade.

ChurchHelpsToAttractMigrants

Itshouldbetheirdesiretoattractmoreimmigrants tothatlandofpromise.TheFederalGovernment andalsocertainprivateorganisationswereendeavouringtoenticesettlerstothoseparts.

AsChristians,theytooshouldbeconcernedabout thedevelopmentofthatportionofAustralia.In theCommonwealthandinEuropetherewerestill manyfamilieswholongedtoenjoysomeofthe bountyofAustralia;therewerepeoplesalsoof othercontinentswhowouldlikeawayof offeredmorespaceandmorenaturalopport'es totheirfamilies.

TestimonyToChurch'sUniversalVision

Eveniftheyfeltitmightbepracticallydifficult tohavealargescalemigrationoffamilies,neverthelessasChristianstheycouldnotbeunconcerned abouttheirconditionsoflife.Ifotherpeoples couldnotprovidesufficientfoodfortheirselfsupport,thensurelyitwasourtasktoaidthemfrom ourabundance.Wewerehelpingthemtechnically, bystudentformation,andalsobymeansofthe C'olomboPlantodevelopthemselvesindustriallysothat,ultimately,theymightbeabletohelpthemselves.

Allthatwasmostpraiseworthy.Butifinthe meantime,orevenlonger,otherpeopleswereunableproperlytoprovidefortheirownsubsistence andweonthecontrarycouldhelpthemfromour abundance(suchasforexamplebyexploitingour countryaccordingtoitsnaturalcapacity),thensurely ourChristianconsciencemustremindusconstantly ofourobligation.

Developmentofthosenorthernregionswouldenableusthemoreeasilytohelpnotonlyourselves, butalsothepeoplesofotherlands.Theyweredoing awonderfulworktheninthatidealofdevelopment. Theirverypresencetherewasaninvitationto otherstojointhem.Theirpresencethereasa ChristiancommunitywasatestimonytotheChurch's universalvision.Wheretherewerehumans,there also,always,mustbetheChurchofChrist.

IftheGovernmentwereinvitingnewsettlersto theKimberley,theyweregivingundeniabletestimonythattheChurchwasalsodoingherpartto makethatinvitationattractive.Theywereensuring thatCatholicscouldcomethereandfindchurches, schools,orphanages;andsoforth.Eventhoughit tookmuchtime,energy,andfinancetoprovidefor thespiritualneedsofsuchawidelyandsparsely dispersedpopulation,neverthelesstheimportanceof theworkmeriteditall.

AboriginesMustShareInLayApostolate

HisExcellencyaskedeachofhishearerstorememberalwaysthattheChurchwantedthemtobe apostles.TheywereimportanttoOurLord.He lovedthemforbeingloyaltoHim.Hewanted themtobealsoapostles,totakeHisspiritand teachingtoothers,tomakeHimknowntoothers.
