Therewereoncetwobrothers.Nowitiswell knownthatelderbrothershavetheprivilegeand eventhedutytogiveadvicetotheyounger,so theelderonedaycalledhisbrothertohimand spokethesewords:"AsheadofthefamilyImust informyouthatwecannotbearyourbadbehaviour anylonger.Whenyouwereinthearmyyouwere alwaysgettingintotrouble,nowsinceyourreturn homeyouhavebroughtdisgraceonusinotherways. Sinceyouaresoobviouslydeterminedtoembarrass us.anddragourfamilynameinthedust,willyou besokindastogoasfarawayaspossible.We willhelpyoualongyourway."
Theyoungerbrotherdidnotneedtobeaskedtwice tbgo.Heleftthedistrictandwentofftoanother partofthecountry,livingthereindisguiseand underanassumedname.Hewanderedthrough 'Variouscountries,evenasfarasJerusalem.He fulfilledthepropheciesofhiselderbrotherbybeing senttojailseveraltimes,bybeingreportedtothe Inquisition,bybegginghisbreadinthestreets.
Finally,hediedpennilessinanarrowlittleroomin Rome. efamilyhomeofthosetwobrothershasbeen prved,highupintheBasquecountryofSpain. It neofthecountry'snationalshrines,sosacred thatevenintheCivilWarwhensomanychurches weredesecratedanddestroyed,theCommunists wereextremelycarefulthatnoharmcametoitforfearofturningtheentireBasquepeopleagainst them.Everyroomofthehousehasbeenturned intoachapel,andbesideitstandsamagnificent church.
SicknessBecameInstrumentOfConversion
Buttowhomistheshrinededicated?Totheelder brotherwholivedthereallhislife,broughtuphis familywithinit,isburiednearby?Hewasagood Christianman,notedforhischaritiesinthedistrict. Yetstrangelyenough,theshrineisdedicatedtothe youngerbrother,theprodigalson,theblacksheep ofthefamily,thewandererwholiesburiedmany milesaway.Theyoungerbrother,oncetheproblem childanddisgraceofthefamily,isnowitsgreatest glory.HeisknowtousasSt.IgnatiusLoyola.
ThedatesofIgnatiusarenotdifficulttoremember. Hewasbornin1491,theyearbeforeColumbusdiscoveredAmerica,andhediedin1556-justfour hundredyearsago.Atasuitableagehejoinedthe armyanddistinguishedhimselfinbattle,until,very fortunatelyfortheworld,acannonballbrokehis legatthesiegeofPamplona.Thedoctorsdidtheir workverybadly,andthelegtooksomemonthsto heal,butduringthosemonthsofinactivityandgreat painanimmensechangecameoverthelifeofIgnatius.Whenhecalledfornovelstowhileawaythe hourshewastoldthattherewasnonetobefound inthedistrict;theonlytwobooksavailablewerethe LifeofChristandtheLivesoftheSaints.
Ignatius,verymuchagainsthiswill,waselectedits firstgeneral.Bythetimehediedin1556,ithada thousandmembers-spreadovermostoftheknown orld.
Inspiteofimaginativenovelistsandhistorians, therehaveneverbeenanyfemaleJesuits,andthere willneverbe-solongastheinstructionsofSt. Ignatiusarecarriedout.Hisorderisformenalone. Itismadeupof:(1)Priestsandthosetrainingto bepriests;(2)Brothers.Allmembersoftheorder labourtosaveandsanctifytheirownsoulsandthose oftheirneighbours,buttheydosoindifferentways.
Thestudents(orscholastics)study;thepriests teach,preach,write,administersacraments,etc.;the BrothersdothenecessarydomesticworkthatChrist carriedout'inthehomeandworkshopofNazareth. Or,tochangethecomparison,theBothersarein manywayslikethegroundstaffintheAirForce whoservicetheplanesandkeepthemflying.
SomePopularMythsDissipated
Again,inspiteofsomeimaginativenovelistsand evenjournalists,Jesuitsdonotgoaboutinthecollarsandtiesofthelaity,orinthe"cloakanddagger" uniformofsecretagents,butinthesombreblackof theclergy.Muchtoannoyanceoftheirpersecutors intheEnglandofthefirstQueenElizabethandthe MexicoofCallestheyputthepolicetosometrouble bydressingaslaymenbutinthecountriesofthe fourfreedomstheJesuitsarehappytobeimmediately recognisedasmembersoftheclergy,andtohave theiraddressesinthetelephonebook.Theyhave nothingtohide,andtheirdearestwishisthatthe poormisguidedpeoplewhothinktheyareplotting thedestructionoftheBritishEmpireorthiscountry (therearesomepeoplewhothinkthis)wouldpay themavisitandhaveathoroughlookovertheir collegesorhouses.
"Whatdidyoudolastweek-end?""Oh,Iwent offandmadearetreat."Non-Catholicsaresometimesamazedatthisanswertothequestionthatis partoftheMondayroutineinmostshopsandfactories,yetitisananswerthatthousandsofAustralianCatholicscanmakeeachyear.Retreatsaremade bytheclergyandreligious,laymenandlaywomenandletusnotforgetbyboysandgirls.Noonewho hasmadearetreatproperlywilldeny,howeverhard theyhavefoundtheunaccustomedsilence,thatthe retreatbroughtthemclosertoGodandmoredeterminedtohelptheirfellowmen-infact,thatthe worldwouldbeamuchhappierplaceifthegentlemenoftheKremlin(andotherdisturbersofthe peace)couldbeputthroughthesameexperience.
SpiritualExercisesAreRetreatBasis
Havingnothingelse,hewasforcedtoreadthem, andbytheendofhisconvalescencehehaddecided todevotehimselfentirelytotheserviceofGod.The soldierofthekingwouldbecomethesoldierof Christ.Ignatiusisnotthefirstmantohavebeen broughtclosertoGodbyhavingonlyChristianliteraturetoreadduringaterminhospital,norwillhebe thelast.Anotherresultofhisaccidentislessimportanttohistory,butmusthavebeenverypainful forhim.Hewasleftwithapronouncedlimp,yeton thosebadlyhealedlegshehadtocoverthousandsof milesduringtherestofhislife.Ignatiusisthe patronnotonlyoftheadultdelinquentbutofthe physicallyhandicapped.
IgnatiusFoundANewOrder
HisconversiontoGoddidnotmeantheendofhis troubles,butratherthebeginningofthem.With no-onetodirecthim,hemademanymistakes,took manywrongturningsinhiswaytoGod.Temptations toscrupulosity,eventosuicide,attackedhim,and theywereovercomeafterlongandpersistentstruggle. Thetroubledandthementallyillofourdaycancall uponIgnatius-astheydidduringhislaterlife-and knowthattheywillfindasympatheticfriend.He isallthemorereadytohelpthembecausehehas beenthroughmuchthesamehimself.
Decidingtobecomeapriest,Ignatiuswasfaced withthedifficultyofmakingthenecessarystudies. Whatiaittlehehadlearnedatschoolmustlongago hayenforgotten,andhewasnowamanof33. HewentbacktoschooltolearnLatin.Tospur himselfon,hetoldtheteachertopunishhimifhe madeamistakeashewouldpunishthesmallboys whosatbesidehimontheschoolbenches.
Therebeingfewseminariesinthosedays,hedid therestofhisstudiesattheUniversityofParis, living,nahospitalsoastobeabletohelpthesick inhissparetime.Duringtheholidayshewouldgo offtotrytogainthemoneywhichwouldsupport himduringtheuniversityterm.Atlastheobtained hisdegreeofMasterofArts.
Rarelyhasknowledgebeengainedatthecostof sucheffortandsacrifice,butitsurelyenabledIgnatius tounderstandthedifficultiesofthepoororbackward student,theex-servicemantryingtosettledownto averydifferentlife,thelatevocation.
Mengatheredroundhim,drawnbysomeforce theydidnotunderstandandtheycametobecalled hiscompanions.Oneofthefirstofthemwasa brilliantyoungstudentnamedFrancisXavier,destinedtobecomethePatronofAustralia.Onthe FeastoftheAssumption,1534,Ignatiusandsixothers kneltinachapelofoneofParis'churchesandconsecratedthemselvestotheserviceofGodandthe Church.
Anewreligiousordergraduallycameintoexistence,towhichIgnatiusgavethenameof"Company ofJesus."(Thenamewassoonchangedinto"Society ofJesus"oritsfamiliarabbreviation"S.J."-itis morecommonlyknownas"TheJesuitOrder.")In 1540thePopeconstituteditafullreligiousorder,and
NowitwouldbeincorrecttogiveSt.Ignatiusall thecreditfortheworldretreatmovementwhichis doingsomuchgood,butitwouldbeunjusttodeny himagooddealofcredit.Bookswritteninthe 16thcenturyarenotmuchreadtodayexceptbythe scholarlyfew;theexceptionsareafewoutstanding workssuchasShakespeare'splaysand-theSpiritual ExercisesofSt.Ignatius.
Instyle,ofcourse,itcannotcomparewithShakespeare,butitsuppliestheprogrammeformanyof theretreatsmadethroughouttheworldoftoday.It hasbeenpraisedbynumeroussaintsandbynumerouspopes,andusedasabandbooktosanctityby the27canonisedJesuitsaints.ThroughtheOrderhe founded,andtheSpiritualExercises,St.Ignatiushas influencedthepastfourcenturies,andisinfluencing themenoftoday.
HowmanyJesuitsarethereintheworldatpresent?
Therearealittleover32,000,comprising16,000 priests,5,000Brothers,and11,000studentsorscholastics.Withregardtotheselast,ithasbeensaidthat ordinationtothepriesthoodasaJesuitisthereward ofawell-spentlife,forordinationusuallycomes attheendof15yearsmembershipoftheOrder. Theaverageyoungman,whoenterswiththeLeavingcertificateoritsequivalent,spendstwoyearsin novitiate,twotothreeyearsinuniversitystudies, threeyearsinthestudyofphilosophy,threeyearsin teachinginsomeJesuitschool,andfinallythree yearsinthestudyoftheology,beforebecominga priest.
JesuitsEngageInManyActivities
Twoyearsfollowordination,oneofstudy,the otherofspiritualtraining.beforetheyoungman canbeconsideredtohavegraduatedasaJesuit.It mustbeaddedthatforthesakeofthosewho,like St.Ignatiushimself,enteraslatevocations,thenormalcoursecanbeconsiderablyabbreviated.Providencefortunatelytakestheselongyearsofpreparationintoaccount,andmostJesuits,inspiteof theusualoccupationalhazards,seemtolivebeyond thenormalspan.
Whatdotheydo?Hereagain,thereisnoIron Curtainovertheiractivities.TheOrderisproud tohavemorethan5,000ofitsmembersonthe foreignmissions,followinginthefootstepsofthe greatSt.FrancisXavier.Bothonthemissionsand elsewhere,theaverageJesuitisliabletofindhimself employedinthetaskofCatholiceducation.Catholic education,ofcourse,isamany-sidedthing,beginninginthekindergartenandendingwithpostgraduateresearch.
TheJesuits,whoknowtheirlimitationsaswellas theirabilities,aretobefoundteachingmainlyin secondaryschools,universities,institutesforadult educationandthelike.TherearenoJesuitkindergartens,andprimaryschools,wherepossible,areleft totheSistersandBrotherswhoaresoeminentlysuccessfulinthesefields.Initsuniversitiesthroughout theworldithas140,000students,initshighschools morethan150,000,initsseminariesitiseducating morethan30,000futurepriests.
Apartfromeducation,theJesuitsengageinparish work,givemissionsandretreats,writebooksand periodicals,andengageinscientificresearch.The Vaticanobservatoryisintheirhands,andtheyhave
St.IgnatiusofLoyola scientificpostsinmanypartsoftheworldengaged particularilyinseismology-therecordingofearthquakes. ThefirstJesuitscametoAustraliamorethana hundredyearsagofromAustria,bringingagroupof migrantswiththem.TheypioneeredtheClaredistrictofSouthAustralia,buildingchurchesthereand iii1856,justonehundredyearsago,theyopened St.Aloysius'College,Sevenhill,oneofthefirstCatholiccollegesofAustralia.Latertheybeganamission tctheaboriginesoftheNorthernTerritory. WhatisnothappeninginAsiaisoneofthebest criteriaoftheintensityoftheCommunisteffortto deludetheworldthatitspeaceprotestationsare sincere.Moreover,itisdramaticallyimportantin thepresentsustainedagitationtohavetheRed regimeinChina"recognised"tonotetheworth ofthecontentionthatChinaisindependentof Moscowandapotential,deviationistfromorthodox Marxism.ItisgrotesquelyuntruethatChinese Communismdiffersbyajotoratittlefromthe Kremlinbrandandsofarfrommanifestingany spiritofTitoism,theChineseoverlordsarethe mostcravenofanyoftheSovietsatellites.Ifproof ofthatpropositionbesoughtitistobefoundin theheroicrestraintoftheChineseinactsofovert aggressionatatimewhenallAsiaisripeasaplum tofallintotheirlaps.
ItmustbeimmenselygallingtoMaoTse-tungto sitquietlybyuntilMoscowshallhavesqueezed thelastdropoutofthepeaceoffensive.Before himstretchesanempireforthegrasping,yethe mustbestillwithanOrientaltranquillityquite foreigntohisnatureandtotheplayofhistorical circumstanceswhilehismasterscompletetheir strategyforthesubjugationoftheWest.Ofcourse, thefurtive'warofsubversionamongthemillions oftheChinesediasporascatteredthoughoutAsia neverletsupbutanykindofdirectactionisheavily discountenanced.FromthepresentaspectofAsia onewouldneverguessthattheChinesebandits hadbutyesterdaymenacedSingapore.Thedate setaftertheinfamousGenevaconferencefor"free elections"inVietnamhascomeandgonewithout aCommunistprotestanywhere.TheChinaseas, sofarasthe"liberation"ofFormosaisconcerned, mightwellbetheproverbialmillpond.
WhatDiplomaticRecognitionInvolves
Thereisanuncannysilencewhereintheinaction isredolentofperil.Andtherecanbenodoubt thatMoscow'sspuriousconvivialityispaying heavydividends.Followingthemeetingofthe PrimeMinistersoftheBritishCommonwealth, therehasdevelopedaquietbutpersistentpropagandainthepressinfavourofrecognisingthe presumably-reformeddefactogovernmentofChina. Editorially,ourmorningcontemporary,earlierin themonth,informeditsreadersthatrecognition ofthePekingregimewasa"realisticcourse."DiplomaticrecognitionofthePekinggovernment,we wereassured,was"merelyrecognitionofthesituationasitreallyis,"itdoesnotimplyapprovalof theChineseCommunistsystem,etc,etc.Itgrieves metohavetoremarkthatsuchanattitudeis shockinglyimmoral,politicallynaiveandjuridicallyabsurd.Itisatissueofliesgivenoutwiththe honourableintentionsandwithnopurpose ofdeception.Butitisnottobeendured.
Itiscuriousthatthepress,whichisusually reasonablywell-informedonfactualissues,displaysanextraordinaryignoranceofwhatdiplomaticrecognitioninvolvesandnoneofourlegal punditshasseenfittoenlightenit.Recognitionis alegalconceptbasedoninternationallawbywhich aStateassentstoenterintorelationswithanother Stateonthebasisofgoodfaithandtheobservance ofinternationalcovenants.Althoughthesehave noeffectivepracticalsanctions,shortofresortto war,onceaStatehasbeenrecogniseditisentitled tomaintainembassiesandenjoyimmunityfromlegalprocesshoweverlawlessitmaybecome.That, indeed,waspreciselythepositionoftheSoviet embassyinCanberrauntilPetrovspilledthebeans. Ininternationallawtherearefairlypreciserules governingdiplomaticrecognitionofdefactoregimesaslegitimategoverninents.
Briefly,thesearetheabilitytomaintainorder, stability,popularsupportandthepromotionof justiceandthecommongood.Needlesstosaya pre-requisiteofadmissiontotheinternational communitymustbewillingnesstoacceptandabide bytherulesofinternationallaw.Onthesetests thecasefortherecognitionofRedChinamust flounderhopelessly.Ithasnotonlyfloutedinternationallaw,buthasbeencondemnedforits actionsbytheUnitedNations.Ithasshown repeatedlyandconsistentlycontemptfortherights offoreignersbytheconfiscation'ofproperty,the persecutionofmissionariesandsummaryexpulsions,tosaynothingofovertactsofaggressionin KoreaandMalaya.Britainhasrecognisedthe Communistregime,butherleadinginternational lawyer,ProfessorG.Schwarzenbergerhasbluntly saidtheUnitedKingdomwaspromptedbymotives ofexpedienceandviolatednotonlyinternational law'sacceptedprinciples.butalsothepolitical normsshehaslivedbyduringthepast150years.
SoitisthatadvocacyoftherecognitionofRed Chinaamountstoadenialoflaw,ofmoralityand ofeverydecentstandardexceptthatofexpediency. Toacceptthatistotakethebaitoftheenemyand toabandontheprinciplesuponwhichourcivilisationrests.Whateverbattlesthecommunistswin theymustnotgainthemoralsupremacy.

TakethecuriouscaseofVietnam.TheCommuniststhoughtaftertheGenevaConferenceofJuly, 1954,thatsouthernVietnamwouldfallintotheir handsthisyearlikearipeapple.Itisanapple theyaredesperatelyanxioustodevour.They hopedtotakeoverthesouthbymeansofa"general election:thismonth.Therewillnotbeanysuch election.
UndertheGenevaArmisticeAgreement,the Communistsweregivenaboutthreefifthsofall Vietnam.Everybodywhoknowsanythingaboutthe CommunistregimeinnorthernVietnamknows thatelectionsheldtherewouldnotbefree.Communistswouldthushaveaready-mademajority forunificationundertheCommunistyellow-starred redflag.
TheInternationalControlCommission,whichhas failedtoinsurefulfilmentofthearmisticeprovisionsonthefreemovementofrefugees,would certainlyfailtoinsurefreedomoftheballot.Up tolastAprilithadnotevenobtainedfreedom forVietnameseprisonersofwar,stillheldnearly twoyearsaftertheceasefireinviolationofarmisticeterms.
NgoDinhDiem,whohasjustcompletedtwo yearsinoffice,firstasPremierandlaterasPresidentofFreeVietnam,sayshewouldliketohave agenuinelyfreegeneralelection.TheCommunists wouldcertainlyloseinnorthernVietnamiftruly freeelectionswereheldtoday,justastheywould loseinPoland.
WhatThePromiseOfElectionsIsWorth
Redsaroundtheworld,especiallyinnorthern Vietnam,ChinaandSovietRussia,willprotest againstDiem'srefusaltoagreetothekindofelectionstheywant.Theywillrenewtheircharge thatthefailuretoholdtheseelectionsisaviolation oftheGenevaArmisticeAgreementoftwoyears ago.Theirchargeisfalse.
TheGenevaArmistice,amilitaryagreement signedbytheFrenchandCommunistVietnam highcommands,didnotprovideforelections.A "finaldeclaration"ofsevendelegationsparticipating intheGenevaConferencedidcallforelectionsto takeplacethismonth.FreeVietnamwasnota partytothisdeclaration,butprotestedstrongly againstit.TheUnitedStateshadnothingtodo withit.
ThesevendelegationswhoapparentlyconcurredinthedeclarationwereSovietRussia,the CommunistgovernmentofChina,theCommunist Vietminh,France,Britain,LaosandCambodia.But noneofthemsignedit.TheFrenchParliament didnotvoteonit.Whateverdealsmayhavebeen madebyothersatGeneva,nothingintheDeclarationbindstheRepublicofVietnam.
WithinafewmonthsDiem'scollapsewasbeing predictedbysomeforeignobservers,especially thosewhodislikedthedoggedlittleCatholic nationalist.Todayheisstrongerthaneverbefore. Hehasindeedeconomicandinternationalpolitical problems.Butaccordingtoareceentvisitorwho hadfirsthandknowledgeofVietnamattheend ofthewarandafterwards,the"pictureisinfinitely brighterthanitusedtobe."
AtthemomenttheCommunistsdonotseemlikely totryfrontalmilitaryattackonsouthernVietnam. Theywillprobablycontinuetoboreintoitsnieghbouringcountries.Cambodiahasalreadygoneinto aneutralismfriendlytoPekingandMoscow.Vietminh-ledRedforceshavedugintotwoprovinces ofLoasandtheInternationalControlCommission hasfailedtomakethemyieldground.
AfterJuly20-thedatesetbythe"declaration" fortheelections-Communistsandtheirfriends throughouttheworldmayclamourtohavethe GenevaConferencereconvened.Theiraimisby hookorcrooktobringtheeightmillionpeople nowinsouthernVietnamandallthericelands, rubberplantationsandstrategicpositionsofthe SouthunderRedcontrol.
Thoseeightmillionpeopleinclude(800,0001 refugeeswhogaveupeverythingandriskedtheir livestoescapefromCommunism.Theyalsoinclude morethanonemillionCatholics.

Innoaspectmorethaninthereligiousordersand congregationshastheChurchmanifestedtheChristianparadox,thattherichestvarietycanonly arisefromtheintensestunity.ItisCatholicism andnotProtestantismthathasdemonstratedhow singlenessofpurposemaybeservedwiththemost diversemeansofattainment.Thatiswhythe attempttocomparethemeritsoftheSaintsorof thereligiousordershasbecomenotmerelyodious butoneofthelargerlunacies.Eachandevery oneofthemstrivestorestoretheKingdomofGod, buttheirmethodsaredifferentthoughnevercontradictory.ManyoftheOrdersarededicatedto theemphasisingofsomeparticularaspectofthe Christianlife.TheCarmelitesremindtheworld incessantlyoftheneedofprayerandpenance:the FranciscanshaveespousedtheLadyPoverty. Othersarebuiltaboutanorganicconcept.The Benedictines,forexample,wereinspiredintheir organisationbytheidealoftheChristianfamily.
TheSocietyofJesushassomethingofboth.Ithas adefinitestructuralconceptandadistinctivespiritualcharacteristic.AstheBenedictinesarefounded ontheideaofafamily,sotheJesuitswereconstitutedontheconceptofanarmy.Hencethe Societyismorecorrectlyknownasthe"Companyof Jesus."So,too,theoutstandingmeditationsofthe SpiritualExercisesarethe"KingdomofCrist" and"TheTwoStandards."Ithasbeensaithat theExerciseswerecarvedwiththepointofaord. Forthegeneralpublicthemostinterestingaspect oftheJesuitsistheirreputationforlearning.This has,indeed,beenjustified,for*theSociety,from itsinception,hasbeeninthevanoftheChurch's defenceline.YettheSocietyhasbeenthebuttof aceaselesscampaignofhatred,misrepresentation andcalumny.Oneofthemeaningsstillattached totheword"Jesuit"intheOxfordDictionaryis "deceitfulperson,crafty."Itisimpossibletoset downanyonecircumstanceasthechiefcauseof theodiumthathasgatheredaroundthenameof theSociety.Itmustberememberedthatitwas borninthe16thcentury,theageofreligiousanimosity,whereintheBritishIslesforoveracentury, theJesuitwasforcedintotheroleofthe"artful dodger."Again,itisimpossiblethatinaSociety 400yearsold,andnumberingover30,000members. individualmembershavedonenothingtobreed dislike.Ontheotherhand,theSocietyhashosts offriendsandadmirers.Inanyeventnooneshould applytheword"casuistry"slightlyinreference totheSocietyuntilheisintimatelyacquaintedwith thetrendofPost-Reformationhistory. Finally IgnatiusprayedthatthisOrdermightneverlack theCross.TheclosefollowingofChristnecessarily entailspersecution.ItistheSociety'schiefglory toclaimthatitsFounder'spl.ayerwasabundantly answered.
TheJesuitshaveaparticularloveofthescholastic life,whichisnotsurprisingwhenonerecallsthat St.Ignatiusandhisfirsttwelvecompanionswere allMastersofArtsintheUniversityofParis,and thatatthetimeofthesuppression,oftheSociety in1773theJesuitswereresponsiblefor60percent oftheeducationalworkinEurope.ThecounterReformationwassuccessfullysustainedbythem chiefly,aftertheSpiritualExercises,bytheinfluenceoftheircolleges,seminariesanduniversities. ThescholasticreputationoftheJesuitshasgrown intoproportionsofsuperstitiousdreadforthe enemiesoftheChurch,whilewithintheChurch theyareherintellectualvanguardandsecondto noneasabodyofeducatedmen.
WhiletheSocietyofJesushasmanyadmirers, ithasalsonumerousenemiesandcritics.Inthe beginningithadthethanklesstaskofcarryingout reformswithintheChurchitself.Itsconst.tions maderadicaldeparturesfromthetraditionracticesofreligiousorders,inthattheJesuitsidnot singtheDivineOfficeinchoir,norpractisecorporalausterityasanobligation,andevenmodified thenatureofthesemortifications.Further,the theologiansoftheSocietyopenedupspeculations inmoraltheologywhichsomeconsideredoutrageouslynovelanddangerouslyliberal.Then,the newapproachandmethodofthespirituallifeprovidedbytheExercisesbecomingmorepopular, theJesuitsinevitablybegantobeindemandas confessorstothegreat.Manythoughtthattheir councilswerenotconfinedtospiritualmattersand libels,forthemostpart,aboutpoliticalintrigue arose.Sofierceandinfluentialdidtheopposition growthatthePopewasconstrainedtosuppressthe Societyin1773.Itsspiritandtraditionswere, however,perpetuatedinRussiaandinothercongregationsinEurope,untilitwasfinallyrestoredin 1814.
ThechiefreasonforgratitudeintheSocietyof Jesus,however,liesneitherinitslearningnorin itswidespreadinfluence,butintheSpiritualExercisesofSt.Ignatius,whichtheFathershavedispensedsincethefoundationoftheOrder.TheExercisescontainnonewdoctrine,butareratheran extraordinarywell-plannedsequenceandpresentationofbasicfactsaboutmaninhisrelationtoGod.

ChurchApprovesTheDevotion

Itcan,however,beahelptoustoexaminethese promisesofMary.Sacramentals,suchasrosaries andscapulars,whichmayhavebeenmadeknown tousthroughtherevelationstoasaint,donot dependfortheirvalueupontherevelationofthe saints,butuponthevoiceofthelivingChurch.
Shewillexamineasupposedrevelation,sayof Lourdes,andifitcontainssomethingentirelynew whichisnotsomehowcontainedalreadyinher message,shewillnotrecommendit.Shewillwarn usagainstit.AsGodhassentChrist,Christhas senttheChurchandshecarriesoutHismandate toguideusarighttoheaven.Shewatchesoverthe doctrinalcontentofourdevotionstomeasureif theybeinconformitywithhermessageandifthey trulyenlightenus. OurLadyOfMountCarmel whoasksthissignoflove,wearenotsurprisedthat itisasimpleandconstantsignsheasksforrather thanheroics. Otherlovesmaketheirdemandsofsterntests,but amotherasksonlysimplethings nottoforget her,tokeepsomethingaboutyouthatwillremind youofherandtheremembrancewillhelpmento betruetowhatyouknowsheexpectsofthem.If wesupposeMaryourheavenlyMotherwantedto showherpityforusinourstrugglestobegood, couldwethinkofheraskingustodosomethingmore simple,moreaccommodatedtotheunderstandingof all,moreeasytofulfilthanthewearingofasmall garmenttoremindusofherloveftrus?
Yetthewearingofthescapulardoesrequireeffort --indeedsomucheffortthatonenotinfrequently hearspersonssaytheycannotdoitbecauseofits inconvenience.Togoonwearingthescapular,to renewitwhenitiswornout,todiewearingit,requiresperseveringloveforMaryandtheconstant re-animationofourfaithintheeternaltruths.

Thisisamostinteresting bookshowingthefascinationofarchaeology,thedifficultiesthatfacethestudent seekinginformationabouta peoplewhoselanguagehas beencompletelyforgotten, andwhosenameonlysurvivesintheancientrecords liketheBibleasoneofthe manynationswhichafflictedIsraelonhernorthern borders.

Duringhisstayatthe Oratory,doubtlessfrom talkswiththesaintlymembersoftheinstitute,his soul,wearetold,wasfilled withsadnessatthethought oftheimmoralityinwhichthepoorerclasseswereimmersed,especially the Frenchpeasantry.
Areallongingtorescue themfromtheirmoraldegradationandignorance seizedhim.Butwhatcould hedoaboutit?Inhis humilityhebecameconvincedofhisinabilityto undertakethetask.Allthe same,hislongingshaunted him,andfrequentrecourse toGodinprayerwasthe result.
ButGodwasbutbiding histimeandwishedtolead St.Vincentgradually,step bystep,tohisgreatworks. Hewishedtogivehimexperienceinthelivesofthe poor,andtolethimseefor himselftheirdreadfulstate.
HencewefindSt.Vincent going,inobediencetoPere deBerulle,asparishpriest ofClichy,in1612.Herehe wasathomewithhispoor, andeminentlyhappy.

Buttherewerefarworse placesthanClichy,andhe mustbemovedontowards hisgoal.Hecouldnotunderstandthisnewdesignof God,forhewassentas tutortothefamilyof EmmanuelDeGondi,the Admiralofthegalleys.
Butifhehadonlyknown! MadameDeGondi,anexemplarywoman,was anxious,notonlyforher ownsoulandthoseofher husbandandchildren,but deeplyinterestedinthe spiritualwelfareofalllivingonthevastlandsofthe DeGondifamily.
SeeinginSt.Vincentone withsimilarinterests,she encouragedhimtodowhat hecouldwhentheytravelledthroughtheirestates. Hesawtheignoranceofthe people.Hesawtheirlackof opportunity,andthesmall numberofprieststryingto lookafterfartoomany.He realisedthesepoorpriests themselveshadlittletrainingfortheirsacredduties.
Theyearsspentinthis waywiththeDeGondis werecertainlynotwasted. Indeed,theyledtotheestablishmentofthemissions forthepoorneglectedcountrypeople,andasamission
In1625,then,St.Vincent, aidedbythegenerosityof MadameDeGondi,founded hisCongregationofPriests oftheMissiontogivemissionstothepoorandeventuallytomantheseminaries hewastoestablish.
Butwemustgobacka little.St.Vincentwasnot preparedforallGodwantedofhim,when,inJuly, 1617,hefledfromthehouse oftheDeGondisandpersuadedPeredeBerulleto lethimworkforthepoor andneglectedalone.

Heobtainedforhimthe parishofChatilloninthe dioceseofLyons.Anyone whosawthepicture,"MonsieurVincent,"whichwas showninAustraliaafew yearsago,willneverforgetthesceneofhisarrival atChatillon.Howwithhis fewpoorbelongingsover hisshoulder,amidtheinsultsandevenattacksofthe inhabitants,hefoundhis waytothedilapidated church.
Yetwithinfourmonths hehadcompletelytransformedtheplace.Godsent him,ofcourse,forthesouls ofthoseneglectedpeople,butitwastheretoothatHe firstlethimrealisehisabilitytoorganisenecessaryreliefforboththeirsoulsand bodies.
Therehefoundedthefirst AssociationofCharity;the "Charity"ashecalledit. Chatillonwashisfinalpreparation.
St.VincenttookupresidenceinParisin1625,and therehemadehishomeuntilhisdeathin1660.But hetravelledwithhisearly missionariesincountrydistricts,givingmissionsand
viceofGod,everywhereestablishingoneofhis"Charities."
St.VincentdePaul wasoflittleuseunlessthereurgingalltoabetterserweregoodparishprieststo continueitswork,St.Vincentlaterturnedhisattentiontoseminariesforthe trainingofpriests.The CouncilofTrenthadorderedthem,but,uptothistime, Francehadnone,anda priestdidhisstudiesinuniversities,whiletherewas reallynospiritualtraining forhim.
Inacoupleofyearsthere were30ofthesescattered throughthecountry.Once, passingthroughMaconand seeingthemultitudeofbeggars,theirconduct,their ignoranceofthetruthsof Faithandindifferenceto religiousobligations,he brokehisjourney,studied thesituationanddrewupa schemeofreformwhichhe submittedtothelocalauthorities.Theyrecognisedin itanunheard-ofwisdom andadopteditunanimously. Hisfamespreadfarand wide.
DaughtersOfCharity
Buthesawsomethinghad tobedoneforParisitself. Itspoorwere,ifpossible,in aworsestatethanthoseof thecountry.Theirutter misery,theirignorance,the stateofthehospitals,the unwantedinfantslefttodie ondoor-stepsandinalleyways,allthesecouldnot failtodrawoursaint.
Itwasthenthathetook theboldstepofapproachingthenobleladiesofthe Court,andassistedby Louise,thewidowofAntoineleGras(herselfnow acanonisedsaint),formed theassociationoftheLadies ofCharity.
Notonlydidthesenoble womengivehimenormous sumsofmoneyforrelief, buttheythemselvesnursed andcaredforthesick-poor. HoweverSt.Vincentsoon realisedtheydidnotreally knowhowtodealghthe poor.
Fromthatdeveloped, againwiththeaidofSt. Louise,thefoundationof theDaughtersofCharity, nowspreadthroughoutthe worldcarryingtheirwhite cornettesintoeverycorner oftheglobe-45,000strong.
Theyreformedthehospitalsforhim,lookedafterthe poorgalley-slaves,visited thesickandpoorintheir homes,ranfoundlinghomes, even(anunheardofthing inthosedays)nursedthe

DuringPresidentSoekarno'srecentvisit totheUnitedStates,Canada,ItalyandGermany,aprogressiveCatholicweeklyinHolland,"DeLinie,"withJesuitFathersasresponsibleeditors,hadthecouragetoaska fewpertinentquestions. twogreatcampsopposedto oneanotherandtheydo notwishtojoineitherof them.
Theremaybeotherreasonsforadoptingthisat- titudeofneutrality,butat bottomitcomestothis: thatthoughtheydonot intendtojointheCommunistcamp,theformercolonialpowersallbelongto theothercamp.
Thestrengthofthese Asiancountriesliesintheir militaryweakness.Eisenhower'swords,iftrulyreported,aretakentorefer tothis-"Ifanationistruly aneutral,ifitisattacked byanybody-andwearenot goingtoattackthem-publieopinionoftheworld isoutraged."
Itwouldbeshortsighted tosayinsuchaneventualitythattheygotwhat theyaskedforbynot choosingsides.Theyrealisedthatinchoosingsides theywouldbedrawninto astruggleofcontending militaryforcesforwhich theymightbecomeabattlefield.
ServeOwnNeeds
CountrieslikeIndonesia arenotaversetoWestern culturalandeconomicaid, butthisaidmustserve theirownneeds.
WhenSoekarnodeclared inRomethatIndonesia wantstobuildnotonly apoliticaldemocracybut atruesocialandeconomic democracyinwhichthe
people'sstandardofliving willbeinkeepingwiththe needsofmodernlife,he didnotmeanthatIndonesiansmustadoptaWestern standardofliving.
Neitherdidhemeanthat thepolitical,socialand economicdemocracythese Asiannationsarebuildingmustbeareplicaof whathascometobein EuropeandAmerica.
Pope'sAssurance
Itmayhavecomeasa surpriseandaneye-openertoCatholicsthatthePope hasmadeSoekarnoa knightwiththeGrand CrossoftheOrderofPius IX,andassuredhimthat hisgovernmentcould countonIndonesia'sone millionCatholics.
ThePopesaidherealised theChurchamongthese youngnationsisfacinga somewhatdifficultfuture, butitsharestheupsand downsofnations,justas itcannotescapetheeffects
ofactionandreactionin thesphereofpolitics. Itshouldbeclearthatat themomentthereisnothinginIndonesia,andcountrieslikeit,thatshould makeCatholicshesitateto supporttheirgovernment's policy.
PreferOwnWay
OneneednotbethePope oraPresidenttoholdthat betweenrightandwrong, goodandevil,justandunjust,decentandindecent thereisnochoice.Butit isablessingthattheyuse theirstationtoremindus ofobvioustruths.
Theawakenednationsof Asiaseethatnoteverything ofboththeWestandCommunismisright,good,just anddecent. Theyhave theirdoubtsastowhich possessesthetrueideology. Inviewoftheshortcomingstheysee,theyprefer togotheirownwayin spiteoftheshortcomings attachedtothat.
Theywishtolearnfrom whatisgoodinothers,and itisawisepolicytogive themamplechancetodoso withoutputtingunduepressureonthemtopayforthe schoolingbyenteringa militarypactadoptinga democraticsuitthatisnot theirsize.
Yetrighttotheendhe heldhimselfasresponsible fornothing.Helookedon himselfasamerepawnin thehandsoftheAlmighty, andinallsinceritystyled himself"thegreatestof sinners!"
Someofthelessonsofthe lifeofthisoneofourmodels areobviousandcanscarcelybemissed.Firstofallwecanneverdotoomuch forothers,fortheirsouls andbodies,forGodregards whatwedoforthemasif donetoHimself.
Secondly,nomatterwhat weaccomplish,nomatter howwellwelive,wemust notbepuffed-upwithpride, foritisbutthegraceof Godworkinginus.
