Wellbefore11.30a.m.on Sunday,St.Brigid'sChurch waspackedbyPoleswho wishedtohonourtheir spiritualleader.

HisGracetheArchbishop presidedatSolemnHigh MasssungbyFatherDzieciol.FatherJaroszka preachedonthesignificance oftheoccasion.

Althoughthehourwas latealmostallpresentreceivedHolyCommunion andoffereditfortheintentionsofthejubilarian.A Polishchoirgaveabeautifulrenderingof"Polonez."

AfterMass,FatherDziecioldistributedcommemorativemedalsofOurLady ofCzestochowatohiscompatriots.

Atareceptioninthe parochialhall,FatherDzieciolwasjoinedbyHis Lordship"theMostRev.J. J.Raffq.andotherpriests.

Theyweregreetedby Polishchildreninnational costumeandgivenbouquets offlowers.Thechildren offeredgoodwishesinverse andshortspeeches.

Hewasalsowellknown forhisCatholicism,andin particularforhisfidelity totheHolyNameSociety.

PerthHolyNamemen willrememberthathewas singledoutforspecial praisebytheV.RevV. W.McEvoy0.P.,whenhe, FatherMcEvoy,visited PerthasNationalDirector oftheHolyNameSociety oversixyearsago.

AconverttoCatholicism, hemethisfuturewife,the thenMarieMcDowell,when asayoungmanhewasfor atimeonthestaffofthe AlbanyAdvertiser. Forsometimeheworked onthestaffofthePerth MorningHerald. ReturningEastatthe timeofhismarriage,he joinedthestaffoftheMelbourneAgein1904where heremainedformorethan fortyyears,tillhisretirementfromthechief sub-editor'schairin1946.

JustasoneknewthatthePicassodovesportedso persistentlyabroadandathomebytheSovietgovernmenthadnoconnectionwithpeaceintheobjective meaningoftheword,sotheappealsofMr.F.E.ChamberlainforunityintheLabourPartydonotseemto touchtheplaneofreality.Indeedittakesamanof somegalltomakethepleahehasmadestandingamong hisself-createdwreckage.Byanactofdespotismwhich hasneitherparallelnorprecedentinAustralianpolitics, Mr.ChamberlaindisenfranchisedLabourelectorsin NewSouthWalesfromhavinganyvoiceintheirdomesticpoliticalaffairs.Itissurelyironicalthattheindustrial grouperswhomDr.EvattsaidwereFascistsshouldhave beenattackedbymethodsstraightoutoftheFascist text-bouks.

MeanwhiletheineptnessofLabourleadershiphas beenstartlinglydemonstratedintheelectionofthe communistBrowntocontroloftheRailwaysUnion. Browngotbacktothepositionfromwhichthepatriotic groupershadignominiouslyoustedhimona"unity" ticketof"Labourites"andCommunists.Evattandhis lackeyswill,ofcourse,bedrivenfurtherandfurtherin thatdirection.Isay"driven"advisedlybecauseIam quitecertainthatbothEvattandChamberlainfondly believethattheyareleadingtheCommunists.Itisa delusionwhichmanyaSocialistinEurope,nowdeador inchains,harbouredinthepasttwodecades.Itwould notharmLabour's"leaders"tofollowthecareersof BenesandofMasaryckashe"fell"fromhisoffice window.

ButMr.Chamberlain,inahightemperofsuccess, ismoredisposedtogiveadvicethantoreceiveit.He isseeminglynotcontenttohavereducedtheN.S.W. executivetothestatusof"stooges."Despitehisunity appealheisnowintentonpersonaldirectionofLabour branches.Nooneistobepermittedtochallengethe authorityofthefederalexecutiveorconference,despite thefactthattheyhaveactedinamostundemocratic manner.Asasophecounselsagainstfurthertestvotes toeliminatedissentersfromFederalautocracy.Buthe knowsfullwellthatsuchactionwouldbefutileanyway withhishenchmenatthetopoftheladder.Hehas achievedhisaim,butwhatisleftafterthesabotageis notaLabourParty.ItistheEvatt-Chamberlain totalitariansocialgroup.Itcannotsurvive. Hehasachievedhisaim,butwhatisleftafterthe sabotageisnotaLabourParty.ItistheEvatt-Chamberlaintotalitariansocialgroup.Itcannotsurvive.

TheFatherGeneraloftheSocietyofthe CatholicApostolate(PallottineFathers)has appointedtheRev.FatherGeorgeVill,S.C.A. (above),RegionalSuperioroftheAustralianRegioninsuccessiontotheV.Rev. BrunoKupke,S.C.A.,whohasheldtheoffice forthepasttenyears.

FatherVillwasbornin Bataviain1908.In1935he cametoAustraliaasaPallottinestudentandpursued histheologicalstudiesat CorpusChristiCollege,Werribee.

HewasordainedbyArchbishopMannixin1938,his firstappointmentbeingto theVicariateoftheKimberleyswhereheworked amongsttheaboriginesfor twoyears.

In1941hewasonloanto theArchdioceseofMelbourewhereheworkedfor threeyearsintheparishof

RecentlyInotedthesymptomsofwhatappearedto beapressconspiracyagainsttherelicsofroyalty.The venomofarabidrepublicanismorsomethingmore sinisterhasnowbeenswitchedfromtheEnglishRoyal FamilytotheDutchcrown,thusgivingtheattackan internationalaspect.Asisusualinsuchmattersthe conclusionsdrawnbythePressareagreatdealweightier thantheevidenceuponwhichtheyrest.IntheDutch instancetheQueenwassaidtohavebecomeestranged fromPrinceBernhardthroughherattachment,firstto afemalefaith-healerandsecond,toaMoralRearmamentascetic.Asisusualalsothesensationbomb turnedouttobeadampsquib,withPrinceandQueen happilyre-united(ifevertheyhadbeenseparated).

Forallthat,itmaybethattheDutchQueenhasfallen undersomesuchreligiousinfluencesashavebeendescribed.Ifso,itisoddthatthePress,whichrunsregularastrologicalreadingsforthepublic,shouldbeunduly perturbed.Whywouldtherealityoffaith-healing causetheDutchthronetototterwhilethesuperstitions ofastrologyhaVenoill-effectonthecommonman?It wouldappearthatthePressisonlyapprehensiveofthe influenceofreligionwhenitbecomesserious.Solong aspersonsinthepubliceyeappeartobepayingmerely formalrespecttoreligionalliswell.Themomentthey attachsufficientimportancetoittoaffecttheirpublic actionsitreceivesthetreatmentaccordedtomajor diseases.Thatissufficientlyevidencedintheway convertauthorshavebeenmadetoappearsuddenlyto losetheirliterarygrip.

Acuriousaspectofthisquestionisthattheprinciple ofuntouchabilityonlyappliestopositiveprofessionsof religion.So,iftomorrow,thePresidentoftheUnited Statesopenlyproclaimedattachmenttoagnosticism,it wouldscarcelywarrantaparagraph.Nopaperwould suggestthatthePresident'snegationofreligiousreality mighthaveadeleteriouseffectonAmericanpolicyand thatheshouldgiveupreadingHarnackorIngersoll. InallthefearsexpressedaboutthespreadofCommunismitisnothintedthatthemilitantatheismofthe Kremlinisathingtofearmorethanitsstockpileof atomicweapons.Stilllesswillanyjournalistbebrash enoughtoproposethatthesecularistoutlookisjading thedemocraticideal.Thereliesthesuprememyopia. Onewouldwelcomeanysortofreligiousattachment whichmightvitalisepubliclife.Asitiswearebleeding todeathwithdoubtsanddenials.

Apainter,etcher,designerandpoetwhoseworkwas inspiredbyhisCatholic convictions,SirFrank's worksgracechurches,art collectionsandpublicbuildingsthroughouttheworld.

Hewasbestknownfor hismurals,suchasthe BrangwynpanelsatRockefellerCentreinNewYork. ThatgroupincludestheimpressiveSermononthe Mount.

SirFrankwasknighted byKingGeorgeVIin1941 andreceivedhonoursfrom nearlyadozenothernations. HewasbornofBritish parentsin1867inBruges, Belgium,wherehisfather wasachurcharchitect. Brugesnowhasitsown Brangwynmuseum.

SirFrankgaveaway manyofhisworks.Prominentamongthesegiftsare thesetofStationsofthe Crosswhichheexecutedfor thechapelofCampionHall, Jesuithouseofstudiesat Oxford.

Atharvest-timethegrapes arepressedintohugevats inwhichthejuicewillfermentbeforebeingstored intooakcasksthereto matureandacquirethe scentor"bouquet"ofa superiorwine. IdrankaglassofFrontignac,thistimeunderthe ratherseveregazeofthe portraitofaRoewhowas thefirstwhitechildtobe borninWestAustralia,and who,Iwastold,wasonce lostandeventuallyfoundby herfranticparentsonMt. Nowthecaseadvancedbythecapitalistress defeatsitselfinthattheargumentationforpuerility undoesthepropositioninfavourofindecency.It iscommonpracticetoindoctrinatecubjournalists withtheideathattheyarewritingforapublic withamentalageof12years.Thathasagood aspectifitmakesforlucidityofstyleandsimplicityinthepresentationoffacts.Butclearlyit cutsdiametricallyacrosstheexploitationofsex. Thesefigures,whichare carvedinwoodandstand 14ft.6in.high,areknownas GogandMagog.Theyare almost230yearsoldand tooktheplaceoftwoformergiantsofgreatantiquity, madeofwickerwork,cane andcardboard.

Figuressimilartothese, butsmaller,usedtoadorn afamousclockmaker'sshop inCheapside,andlikeour LondonCourtclockandthe famousMoorsofVenice, usedtostrikethequarter, half-hour,etc.

ThestoryofGogand Magogtookplaceathousand yearsbeforethebirthof Christ.Accordingtoone tradition,Londonwas foundedbytheGreeksfrom Troy,andwasknownas TrojaNova(NewTroy).

TheGreekshadwith themanenormousgiant knownasCorinaeus.He hadthestrengthofadozen men.

Defeated,theBritonslivedpeaceablywiththeirconquerors.Yearly,however, theGreekscelebratedthis victory.Thisenragedthe Britons,whogatheredall theBritishgiants,whohad goneintocavesandcliffs, andtheydecidedtoattack.

Aterrificbattlewas foughtandalltheBritish giantswerekilledexcept Gogmagog,agiganticfellow, 18ft.inheight.

MysteryOfNames

In1900itwasmoved fromtheconventgroundsto theneighbouringchurch site.Frequentlyaddedto, repairedandshifted,itwas finallydemolishedin1938 whenanewparishhallwas built.

PastorFor38Years

Itwasinthatbuildingin 1897thattheSistersof NotreDamedesMissions, arrivingfromChristchurch, NewZealand,commenced schoolwithanattendance of38pupils.

In1903theRedemptoristFathersmovedtotheircompletedmonastery.Thelate Rev.ThomasCrowleycame fromToodyaytobecome firstparishpriestofHighgate. Duringhislongpastorshipof33years,hegave theparishaworthychurch. OnAugust20,1905,the foundationstonewaslaid byBishopGibney.

Thefirstportion-asfar asthepresentsideentrances-wassooncompleted,thesanctuaryandsacristybeingtemporarystructures.

Forthenext24yearsthisincompletebuildingaccommodatedthegrowing Catholicpopulation,butit wasnecessaryastimewent ontoprovideadditional SundayMasses,atfirstthree andlater,four.

InFebruary,1915,during aviolentthunderstorm,the largestonecrossoverthe entrancetothechurchwas struckbylightning.It crashedtothepathbefore thedoor.

Thetimewasjustprior toeveningdevotionsand people hadenteringthechurch anarrowescape.Father Crowleywasthrowntothe groundandsufferedseverelyfromshock. Thecrosswassoonreplacedwithgreatceremony.
