ThereweresomewhoaccuseCatholicsofbeing alarmists,hesaid;theysaid thatAustraliawassafe, thatwhathadhappenedin othercountriescouldnever happenhere.
Suchpeoplewereburyingtheirheadsinthesand: theydidnotfearthedangerbecausetheywould notseeit;andsuchtalk suitedthepolicyofthe Communistsperfectly,for theonethingtheydesired atthemomentwastolull Australiansintoafalse senseofsecurity.

Buttothosewhokept theireyesopenandwatched thetrendofinternational events,itwasclearthat, humanlyspeaking,Australia couldscarcelyhopetoescape,anditmightnotbe longbeforetheywere crushedlakdertheheavy heelofcwimunism.
Humanlyspeaking,emphasisedthepreacher,becauseinthepracticeof religiontheyhadevery theirreligiontheyhad everyhopethattheymight keeptheChristianwayof lifeandbepreservedfrom thecurseofCommunism.
saidFr.Murtagh,.andthe Godofinfinitegoodness, butHeistheGodofinfinite justicetoo,andforalltime andforallpeoplesHehas laiddowntheTenCommandmentsasawayof lifeforallHischildren.
Letmensaywhatthey likedinjustificationof theirsins,butaserious violationofthoseCommandmentscriedoutto Godforjusticeandfor punishment.
Allthesinsthatwere socommontodayhada socialimpact;notonlywere theybeingcommittedby individuals,buttheyhad theapprovalofsociety; societywassinningagainst God,andsocietymustpay thepenalty;anditseemed thatCommunismwastoday thescourgeofGodtopunish theworldforitsrebellion againstHisauthority.
GodisindeedtheGcd ofgoodnessandmercy, GodisourFather,butGod isnotlikethosefoolish parentswhothreatento punishtheirchildrenand nevercarryouttheir
threats.Godhaslaiddown Hislawsandifwedonot oLeythem,Hewillhave nochoicebuttovisitus withHisangerandHis vengeance.
ThesecondthingtoattendtoduringtheCrusade waspenanceandselfdenial.ChristourLordnever ceasedpreachingthenecessityofpenance:"Ifany manwillcomeafterMe, lethimdenyhimselfand takeuphiscrossandfol-1 lowMe Unlessyoudo penance,youshallalllikewiseperish Hethatdeniethnothimselfisnot worthyofMe."
Penancewasapowerful meansofbringingthe blessingofGodonthe world,andtherealvalue ofpenancelayinthis:God's justicedemandedsatisfactionforeverysinthatwas committed;therewereso manywhocommittedtheir sinswithoutthoughtor consideration;theynever thoughtofmakingatonementfortheirsins.
ButGodinHismercy wasreadytoacceptthe penancesofothers,and therebyHisjusticewas satisfiedandHisanger appeased.
"Letallofyoudosome penanceduringtheCru-
sade,"saidFrMurtagh. "Cutdownonsmokingand drinks,givesomethingto thepoor,andweappeal inaspecialwaytothose whoareafflicted,tothose whohavesomeheavycross tocarry,tothesickinhospitalandathometooffer uptheirpainsfortheblessingofGodonourcountry."
Andfinally,theyshould prayfortheworld,forAustraliaandfortheconversionofRussia.
Catholicswereexpected tomakeaspecialeffort togotodailyMassand Communionduringthe Crusadetoofferthei:familyRosaryeachevening. All-CatholicsandnonCatholicsalike-should prayferventlyfortheconversionofRussiaandfor thepreservationofour countryfromCommunism.
Thetimeswereevil,the futuredark;perilousdays weredrawingnear,they didnotknowwhatthe morrowmightbring,butif peopleofgoodwillonly prayed,iftheydidpenance andgaveupsin,thenthey couldhopethatGodinHis infiniteloveandmercy wouldhavepityonthem andwouldpreserveAustraliaasaChristiancountry.

Anothlithingthatmakes thisbooveryreadableis that,havinggivenallthe historicaldatawhichcanbe authenticated,Mr.Thompsonhasnohesitationin presentinguswithaseries of"vignettes"fromMaya lifetoillustrateinstory formthepatternwhichhas emergedfromthearchaeologicaldiscoveries-most unscientific,butveryentertaining.
TheSpaniardshaveoften beenaccusedofdestroying
thecivilisationoftheMaya whentheyconqueredAmerica,but,asthisauthor shows,theclassicperiodof theMayawasfromthe fourthtothetenthcentury. When the Spaniards reachedAmericatherewas probablylittleleftofthe originalcivilisationwhich raisedthegreattemplesand monolithsthathavesince beenovergrownbythe forestsofthetropics.
Foratleast300yearsthe barbaricMexicanveneer hadbeenimposedoverthe remainsoftheMayacivilisation,andevenbeforethat thetheoryisthatthepeople hadrebelledagainstacorruptortyrannoustheocracy, andthetempleshadlost theirmeaning.

Theprideofparentsseeing theirchildrengrowintogood menandwomen,andperhaps inwitnessingtheirascentto promineenceandusefulnessnoneofusarguesagainstthis. TheChurchmusthavegood familiesoritwillhavenomembers,andMatrimonyisaholy andpraiseworthysacrament.

MonthslaterinAkron,Ohio,hewasonthetrail ofafinancialdealthatwouldrecouphisfortune. Thoughhehadfailedto"dryup"anyofhis numerousalcoholiccronies,hehimselfhadnot tippledonce,andhefoundthathiseffortstohelp otherswerekeepinghimthatway.
Thenthecrashcame.Thebusinessdealbegan tofallthrough,andBillfoundhimselfwalkingthe streetsdayafterdayinafrightfultension.The doorsofthetavernsbeckonedandhebecamefranticlesthegobacktodrink.

Itwasinfactsuchaconversionthatmarkedthe beginningofA.A.IthappenedinBrooklyn,and thegentlemandestinedtobeacatalystfortheA.A. movementisknownto-dayinalcoholiccirclesas Ebby.
EbbyillustratestheA.A.programmeonly obliquely,forhedidnotpersevere;buthisconversionwasgenuinewhileitlasted.Hisbriefexcursionintotherealmsofsobrietytookplaceasthe resultofcontactwiththestreamlinedreligious sectcalledtheOxfordGroup.
EbbyAndBillInventACure
TheOxfordGroupwasneverabletoprovidea programmeforEbbythatwouldkeephimpermanentlysober,buthistemporarysoberingup,which tookplaceundertheirauspices,hadtheeffectofa chainreactionthatbroughtA.A.intobeing.

AmonthlaterBillwentonhislastgloriousbinge andendedupasusualinTownshospital,NewYork sanitoriumforthedryingoutofalcoholics.

MonthslaterinAkron,Ohio,hewasonthetrail ofafinancialdealthatwouldrecouphisfortune. Thoughhehadfailedto"dryup"anyofhie numerousalcoholiccronies,hehimselfhadnot tippledonce,andhefoundthathiseffortstohelp otherswerekeepinghimthatway.
Thenthecrashcame.Thebusinessdealbegan tofallthrough,andBillfoundhimselfwalkingthe streetsdayafterdayinafrightfultension.The doorsofthetavernsbeckonedandhebecamefranticlesthegobacktodrink.

Nooneinthemonastery wasallowedtobeidle,so theabbotgavethelionthe taskofescortingthedonkey tothewoodseachdayand seeinghimsafelyhomeat night.Thiswayheearned hisdinner,whichwasstill thehay,whichheshared withthedonkey. Itwasonawindyday whensandswirledandthe sunwashot,thatthelion felldeeplyasleep.The donkeygrazedcloseby,till outofadust-cloudthere cameacaravanofmerchantstrailingacrossthe sandsontheirwayacross thedesert.

Thefenestrationcompriseslongnarrowwindows executedincolouredglass. Theseare2xl6ft.andas theyareonlyafootapart apleasingverticalperspectiveiseffected. Thealtarhasbeencarriedoutinmarbleandthe altarrailsinwroughtiron withapolishedwoodrailing.
Newpewsinpolished jarrahandtwoconfessionals andsidechapelscomprise themainfurnishing.
Anovelarchitecturalfeatureisasmallcantilevered balconettewhichlinksthe chapeltotheoldbuilding onthewest.
Thisprovisionhasbeen madetoenableelderlyand sicknunstohearMass withouthavingtoenterthe naveofthechapel.

Throughthemistofalcoholicfumes,Bll'swords penetratedandmadesense.Farmoreimportant, however,thananythingBillsaid,accordingtothe doctor,wasthefact"thathewasthefirstliving humanbeingwithwhomIhadevertalkedwho knewwhathewastalkingaboutinregardtoalcoholismfromactualexperience.Inotherwords, hetalkedmylanguage."
Dr."Bob"stoppeddrinkingabruptly.Itistrue thatbeforethemonthwasuphewasoffonanother spree,butitwasthelastone.Hehadgonetoa conventioninAtlanticCityandhadcomebackin aliquidstate,butBillwasstillinAkronwaiting forhisreturn.
Thedoctorhadbynowlearnedthenecessityof workingwithotherstokeephimselfsober.Before BillleftAkron,agroupofAlcoholicsAnonymous hadbeenstartedtherebythetwomen,basedon thereligiousprinciplesthattheyhadworkedout forthemselves.Thedoctor,aidedbyhiswife, startedahospitalforalcoholicsinhisownhome, andinthecourseoftenyearswastotreatmore than4,000suchunfortunates.
HalfDoNotRelapseInDrink
BackinNewYork,Billstartedanothergroup, andwithinthreeyearstherewereahundred"AlcoholicsAnonymous."Ofthese,halfnevertooka drinkagain,aquarterfellbackonceortwice,but eventuallypersevered,andtheotherquarter quicklywentbacktotheircups.Thishasbeen theaveragenumberofconversionsmaintainedto thisday,andtheunconvertedwillprobablyendup assuccessfulAlcoholicsAnonymouswhenthey finallylearntobehonestwiththemselves.
FiveyearsafterthefirstA.A.wasformedtwenty formeralcoholicswereabletotellinprintthe amazingstoryoftheirspectacularrecoveryfrom constantdrunkenness.Theirstorieswerepublished in1939underthetitle,"AlcoholicsAnonymous." Sogreathasbeenthedemandforthisbookthat ithashadtobereprintedeveryyearsince,sometimestwiceayear.
Bythetimethebookwaspublished,itsleaders hadevolvedaprogrammeoftwelvestepswhich wereincludedinthetext.Sincethattime,they havealsoacquiredanumberofsalutarytraditions andhavepublishedtwomorebooksexplainingtheir faith.Themovementhasspreadsorapidlythat to-daytherearemorethan250,000members,with heavyconcentrationsintheBritishIslesandthe Scandinaviancountries.
Thefirsttwentyalcoholicswhopublishedtheir conversionstoriesspokeofGodonlyasa"Higher Power"andtendedtoplaydownreligion.There wasareasonforthis.Manyofthemhadbeen practicalagnostics,andtheirturningtoGod,as theydescribedit,resembledthatofadrowning
atheist:"MyGod,ifthereisaGod,savemysoul,helpedandguidedthemovementfromthebeginning.
ifIhaveasoul."
Howevermostofthemdidhavesomefaithat onetimeItisestimatedthataboutfortyper cent.oftheA.A.hadaCatholicbackground,with theremainderdividedupamongProtestants,Jews, andagnostics.Ifitisreligionthatsavesthem, whydiditnotworkbeforeforthosewhohadsome faith?ThealcoholicanswersthatneithertheA.A. programmenorreligionitselfcanhelpthemuntil theyfirstlearntohehonestandsincerewiththemselves.
Thusthefirststepforthealcoholicistobe honestwithhimselfandtostriphimselfofallillusion."Istanddefenceless;utterly,"saysthepoet in"TheHoundofHeaven,""NakedIawaitThy love'supliftedstroke."FrancisThompsonpictures thesinnerashidingfromGodandfleeingfromone createdgoodtoanotheruntiltheAlmightyhas calmlystrippedallhisdefencesaway.
SearchingExaminationOfConscience
Probablythisistrueineveryconversion,butit iscertainlysowiththealcoholic.Heisanalcoholic preciselybecausehecannotbearwithhimself,cannotstandnakedinthelightofGod'struth.He maybestrong-willedinotherregards,aggressive, poisedandevencharming,butheiskeenlysensitivetohumiliationandisburdenedwithfeelings ofguilt.Alcoholhasbecomeforhimthewayout ofasuffocatingandintolerableimpasse.Itiswhen hereachesrock-bottomandlosesfaitheveninalcoholthathewillcryoutforGod'shelp.
Whenthegracetobehumblecomestothealcoholic,theA.A.programmeteacheshimtomakea searchingandfearlessexaminationofconscience andtoadmittheexactnatureofhisweaknesses andhissins.ForaCatholicthistakestheform ofasacramentalconfession,buteventheProtestantandagnosticremindthemselvesoftheold adage,"Confessionisgoodforthesoul,"andtell theirweaknessestDeachother.
Thenextstepintheprogrammeisthealcoholic's abandoninghimselftoGod.Heistaughttosay anancientprayerputupinmoderndress:"0God, °lyemethecouragetochangethethingsthatmust bechanged:thepatiencetoendurethethingsthat cannotbechangedandthewisdomtoknowthe difference."
AnyinstructedCatholicwillseethatinthese firststepsareembodiedtheconditionsofeffective prayer:humility,self-examination,sorrowforsin, confidenceinGodandabandonmenttoHiswill.As longasthealcoholicmaintainsthesedispositions, hewillobtainthegracetoovercomehisweakness.
A.A.membershavelearnedthewisdomofOur Lord'swords."Sufficientforthedayistheevil thereof,"andhaveappliedthemspecificallyto themselves.Theprogrammeimpressesthemwith thefactthattheywillalwaysbealcoholicsandthat theywillneverbeabletotakeadrink.
GroupStoriesRe-enactConversion
Theirsobrietydependsontheirabstainingabsolutelyfromalcoholinanyform,buttheyareencouragedbythosewhohavesucceededtodothis onatwenty-fourhourbasis,asaday-to-dayventure.
Tomaintaintheall-importantdispositionsof humilityandconfidenceinGod'shelp,theymeet onceaweekwiththeirfellow-alcoholics.These meetingsareapowerfulandusuallyanecessary psychologicalhelp,fortheyareencouragedbynew talesofconversionfromdrinkandthusre-livethe miracleoftheirownresurrectionfromthedregs.
Allthesetacticsmighthavebeentakenfromthe teachingsoftheCatholicChurch,thoughitcan hardlybesaidthatanymovementintheChurch hasbeenasspectacularlysuccessfulwithout-and outalcoholicsastheA.A.movement.
Emotionalexperiencesareprobablytheexceptionintheconversionofalcoholics,andtheprogrammestressesthefactthattheyarenotnecessary.Neverthelesstheirwayoflifeleadsinevitably toadeepeningofreligiousfaithand,insomecases, servesasapreludetoentranceintotheCatholic Church.
ThememberofA.A.whodoesnotatleastreturn tothepracticeofhisancestralfaithwillalmost certainlynotpresevere.
ItisnotunlikelythatAlcoholicsAnonymouswill haveaCatholicsaintasapatron,thereformedalcoholicofDublin,MattTalbot.Thoughhehasnot vetbeencanonized,itseemsprobablethathewill be,forthereisnodoubtthatafterhisconversion heledalifeofheroicsanctity.
Asanillnessalcoholismisnotanacutemanifestationofadiseasecommontohumannature.All ofushaveinheritedanaturewoundedbyoriginal sin,anditisthiswoundednaturethatisour heaviestburdenandourcross.
Alcoholicsarenotaloneinseekingescapehill thisburden.ButthemoreweseektoescapeVIM it,theheaviertheburdengrows.Theadviceof OurLordwasnotidlygiven:"Takeupthycross andfollowMe."
Tofaceoneselfwithallone'sweaknessescanbe ashatteringexperienceforanyonewhoislivingin aworldofillusion.YetAlcoholicsAnonymousdemonstratedramaticallythat,bybeinghonestand sincerewithourselvesandabandoningourselvesto thewillofGod,wecanobtainhelptoovercome anymoralweaknessnomatterhowstrongordeeprooteditmaybe.
Alcoholics'FaithAndWayOfLife
ForthisreasonthetwelvestepsofAlcoholics Anonymousconstituteafaithandawayoflifenot onlyforalcoholicsbutforanyonestrugglingwitha moralweaknessthatisbecominguncontrollable.
1.Weadmittedthatwewerepowerlessoveralcohol(orourweakness)-thatourliveshadbecome unmanageable.
Herearethetwelvesteps:-
2.CametobelievethataPowergreaterthanourselvescouldrestoreustosanity.

11.SoughtthroughprayerandmeditationtoimproveourconsciouscontactwithGodasweunderstoodHim,prayingonlyforknowledgeofHiswill forusandthepowertocarrythatout.
12.Havinghadaspiritualawakeningastherestiltofthosesteps,wetriedtocarrythismessage toalcoholics,andtopractisetheseprinciplesinall ouraffairs.
MoreovertheyquoteanotherprinciplethatisunmistakablyCatholic,viz.,that"faithwithoutworks isdead."Thisprincipleworksitselfoutpractically whentheconvertedalcoholicsseektocarrytheir messageofsalvationtoothers.Godseemstohave blessedtheirapostolateinaspecialway,andithas becomealmostanadagethat"ittakesanalcoholic tounderstandanalcoholic."
WhyhastheA.A.programmesucceededwhen somanyothershavefailed?Chieflybecausethose whodealwithdrinkaddictsseldomhavethe humilityandpatiencerequired.Thisisespecially trueofreligiousgroups.
Thealcoholicordinarilyisnopsychopath;heis likeanyoneelse,onlymoreso:morerebellious,resentful,sensitiveandguilt-ridden.Acondemnatory andmoralisingattitudesuchasisoftentakenby religiousgroupsintensifiesthesefeelingsandsends himintoatailspin.
ItwasforthisreasonthatA.A.brokewith.the OxfordGroupatthebeginning,anditexplainswhy theysoft-pedalreligionwhentheypickupaprospectiveconvertfromthegutter.Thechancesare thatreligionatfirstwillawakenonlythoughtsof apatronisingorhard,dour-facedreformer.
