AnewgodbroodsovertheKremlin

Asearlyasthesummerof1955,theworldknew thatthe20thcongressoftheCommunistparty wouldmeetinMoscow,inFebruarythisyear. Westernobserversdidnotattachgreatsignificance totheevent.

Fouryearsago,theyeagerlyawaitedthe19thcongress, inthehopeofdetectingpossiblecluestoStalin'ssuccession.

Theygenerallyagreedthatthecurrentcongresswould beofgreaterimportancetotheCommuniststhemselves, whoweretryingtoprovetotheworldandtothemselves thatdespiteStalin'sdeath,Beria'sexecutionandMalenkov'sresignation,theCommunistpartyhaspreservedits monolithicunityandisinfullcontrolofthesituation.

Astheproceedingsunrolled,however,andoneCommunistleaderaftertheothergotupandrenouncedStalin andhispolicies,theWestbegantolendamoveattentive eartothenewvoicefromtheKremlin.

Finally,everyoneconcededthatthe20thpartycongress markedthebeginningofaneweraintheSovietUnion. Ithasproducedmorefundamentalchangesintheofficial versionofpartyhistory,aswellasinMarxistdoctrine, thanweremadeduringtheentireStalinera.

The"collectiveleaders"havecertainlyrepudiatedStalinismwithmostofitsimplications;butthetruthisthat thecurrentpartylines,announcedattheCongress,only confirmedthetrendsobservableforanumberofmonths. ThecollectiverulersoftheSovietUnionhavenowmade thisinterpretationofStalin'sMarxismtheirown.The truthremains,however,thatonmostfundamentalissues, Lenin'smethodsandpoliciesdidnotdifferfromStalin's. NothingismoremisleadingthantoacceptDeutscher's viewsabout"thehumaneSocialistspiritoftheearlydays oftheSovietState,"ortobelievethatthepresentrulers aremotivatedbyasimilar"humaneSocialist"spirit.

Hewarnedhisaudiencethatitwasa"harmfulmistake"tothinkthattheprincipleofcoexistencecouldbe extendedtothesphereofideology.Onthecontrary,he calledforanunremittingstruggleagainstbourgeois ideology,includingthe"survivalofcapitalisminthe mindsofSovietmen."
