Thisprayerfulremembranceofthedeadis,above all,aCatholiccharacteristic.Itisgoodthatmen gather,ifonlyonceayear,inthisholyandwholesomethought.Andthisdawnserviceisfurtherthe oneoccasioninmodernlifewheremenhavethe opportunitytograspinsomedimwaythehigher bondsthatbindthelivingtogetherintheCommunionofSaints,andbindthemalsotothedead. Forifthesepeoplebecutofffromtheessential unityofChrist'sMysticalBody,yetthemercyof GodembracesallintheSouloftheChurch.
Thirdly,theDawnServicehasasacramentalnote. Itemploysmaterialsymbolstoexpressspiritual things.Thecrowdaregatheredforworship,but itisnotworshipofthesun.Consciouslyorotherwise,theyareemployingthemostvenerablesymbol ofGodwhichmaninhislossofrevealedtruth foundthemostsatisfyingandexpressive.Therisingofthesunaccompaniedbythefanfareof trumpetsandthehymnsofpraise,symbolisesthe RisingSunofRighteousnessandHisworship.But allthisconsidered,wemaystillaskisitwiseto perpetuateapagancustomevenifitcanbemade serviceabletoChristiantruth?Isitwisetoempty churcheswhenthegreatneedofthedayistofill them?Wewelcome,however,anymanifestation thatthespiritofreligionisaliveandactive,and theDawnServiceiswitnesstoman'sbasicneedof religionanditsmystery.
ButforCatholicsthereis,inregardtothedead, theThingthatmatters-theMass.Andinthese daysoftensionanddreaditispleasingthatthe commemorationofAnzacDaywillbeevenmore solemnandimpressivethaninformeryears.The SolemnRequiemwillre-enacttheGreatSacrifice ofwhichallhumanself-immolationisbutafaint shadowandreflex.AndCatholicswillremember thattheMassisalsothesovereignmeansofpeace. "MypeaceIleaveyou,MypeaceIgiveuntoyou." Anti-ReligiousDrivePossible
TheseOrthodox,Catholic,Protestant,Jewishand Mohammedanbelieverssucceededinsafeguarding theirfaithandinpassingitontotheirchildren.They havegivenproofthattheycanresistbothbloody persecutionandanti-religiousbrainwashing.
Thesleightofhandbywhichthesupremeauthority ofthecommuniststatereligionistransmittedfrom onemantoagroupofmenseemstothemassomuch hocus-pocusandnotworthyofseriousconsideration.

Morelikely,however,theOrthodox,Catholic,MohammedanandJewishbelieverswillfindthemselvestheobjectsofarenewedanti-religiouscampaign.Theleadershipmightregardthatasameans ofchannellingoffthe"religiousfervour"ofthedevoteesoftheStalincult.Thatwouldgivetheleadershipthetimeitneedsto"sell'thedevoteesthenew line.

Ifwestepbackfromthepresenttogainalittle moreperspective,thesituationbecomesalittleclearer.Sdef,wehavetakenforgrantedthattherecent eventstheSovietUnionwouldhaverepercussions inthefieldofreligion.This,inturn,supposedthat Stalinwasresponsibleforthereligiousoranti-religiouspolicyfollowedbytheSovietstate.
Thereissometruth,nodoubt,inthislastsuppositionbutStalindidnotinauguratethefightagainst religion.Infact,thebloodiestphaseoftheantireligiouscampaignwascomingtoendbythetime Stalin'scontrolovertheSovietstatebecamesecure.
In1934,underthemenaceofawarwithGermany, Stalingaveanewdirectiontothefightagainstreligion.InsteadoftryingtoforcethepeopleofRussia togiveupLheirreligionandaccepttheMarxistLeninistcreed,Stalintoldhissubjectsthattheway touprootreligionwastoindoctrinatetheyounger generationstofurnishthemwithasubstitutefor religion.

Thecarryingoutofthisgrandioseanddiabolical enterprisehasbeenthehistoryofreligioninthe SovietUnionsince1934.WheneverStalinthought theremightbesomeadvantageinshowingfavour tothisorthatformoftraditionalreligion,hewould re-openafewchurches.mosquesorsynagogues.
Neverdidhethinkofallowingtheclergytotake uptheirworkofteachingtheirfaithful.Neverwere theyallowedtoopenschoolsorprintpapersorbooks. Whenthetemporaryusefulnessofthereligiousbodies hadceasedtobeimportant,heagaintookuphislongtermoperationofsupplantingreligionwiththeMarxistcreedwithits"church"-theCommunistPartyandits"god"-Stalinhimself.
