Altogethertherearefour, threeofwhichIhavealreadyreviewed:"Adamin Ochre,"whichdealswith thelifeandcustomsofthe Australianaboriginal, "AdamwithArrows,"which ismainlyabouttheyKukukukutribeinNewGuinea, and"IslandsofMen,"in whichtheauthortakesin thepeoplesoftheislandsof Melanesia.

Inorderofsequencethis isnumberthree.Twenty yearsagothepatrolofficers oftheTerritorydiscovered thenativesoftheWahgi Valley,awalled-invalley lyingastridethebordersof PapuaandNewGuinea.

Thisprayerfulremembranceofthedeadis,above all,aCatholiccharacteristic.Itisgoodthatmen gather,ifonlyonceayear,inthisholyandwholesomethought.Andthisdawnserviceisfurtherthe oneoccasioninmodernlifewheremenhavethe opportunitytograspinsomedimwaythehigher bondsthatbindthelivingtogetherintheCommunionofSaints,andbindthemalsotothedead. Forifthesepeoplebecutofffromtheessential unityofChrist'sMysticalBody,yetthemercyof GodembracesallintheSouloftheChurch.

Thirdly,theDawnServicehasasacramentalnote. Itemploysmaterialsymbolstoexpressspiritual things.Thecrowdaregatheredforworship,but itisnotworshipofthesun.Consciouslyorotherwise,theyareemployingthemostvenerablesymbol ofGodwhichmaninhislossofrevealedtruth foundthemostsatisfyingandexpressive.Therisingofthesunaccompaniedbythefanfareof trumpetsandthehymnsofpraise,symbolisesthe RisingSunofRighteousnessandHisworship.But allthisconsidered,wemaystillaskisitwiseto perpetuateapagancustomevenifitcanbemade serviceabletoChristiantruth?Isitwisetoempty churcheswhenthegreatneedofthedayistofill them?Wewelcome,however,anymanifestation thatthespiritofreligionisaliveandactive,and theDawnServiceiswitnesstoman'sbasicneedof religionanditsmystery.

ButforCatholicsthereis,inregardtothedead, theThingthatmatters-theMass.Andinthese daysoftensionanddreaditispleasingthatthe commemorationofAnzacDaywillbeevenmore solemnandimpressivethaninformeryears.The SolemnRequiemwillre-enacttheGreatSacrifice ofwhichallhumanself-immolationisbutafaint shadowandreflex.AndCatholicswillremember thattheMassisalsothesovereignmeansofpeace. "MypeaceIleaveyou,MypeaceIgiveuntoyou." AndtherenewalofCalvaryisalsoareminderthat inAnzacalso,inaninfinitelylesserway,wecommemoratethetriumphoffailure.Wedonotcelebratevictorybutdefeat.ButthroughChrist's triumphantfailure,alldefeatmaybesublimated andennobled."Yoursorrowshallbeturnedinto joyandyourjoynomanshalltakefromyou."

S itisdifficulttodedicateoneselftoanabstilt'onsuchastheCommunistParty,manySoviet citizens,especiallytheyouth,hadtransferredthe attributesofthegod-likespiritofthepartytoits personification-thegreatleader,JosefStalin.

Theshockproduceduponthesedevoteesofthe Stalincultbytherecentorgyof"debunking"has beensevere.Theoutbreaksamongthestudentsof GeorgiamaybeonlyasymptomofthetroublesstirredupintheheartsofRussia'syouth.

Forthesepersonsthe"debunking"ofStalin's ghostwillbegintohavemeaningonlywhenthenew leadershipgivesproofthatitmeanstocontinue Stalin'sreligious-orbetter,anti-religious-policy.

Anti-ReligiousDrivePossible

TheseOrthodox,Catholic,Protestant,Jewishand Mohammedanbelieverssucceededinsafeguarding theirfaithandinpassingitontotheirchildren.They havegivenproofthattheycanresistbothbloody persecutionandanti-religiousbrainwashing.

Thesleightofhandbywhichthesupremeauthority ofthecommuniststatereligionistransmittedfrom onemantoagroupofmenseemstothemassomuch hocus-pocusandnotworthyofseriousconsideration.

Still,theymightbeaffectedbytheattitudetaken bythenewleadership.Theymightunexpectedly findthatmanyoftherestrictionsplaceduponthe exerciseoftheirreligionareremoved.Thatmight conceivablyhappeniftheleadershipthinksitsuitable in,ordertoavertfurtherunrestamongthedevotees oftheStalincult.

Morelikely,however,theOrthodox,Catholic,MohammedanandJewishbelieverswillfindthemselvestheobjectsofarenewedanti-religiouscampaign.Theleadershipmightregardthatasameans ofchannellingoffthe"religiousfervour"ofthedevoteesoftheStalincult.Thatwouldgivetheleadershipthetimeitneedsto"sell'thedevoteesthenew line.

Allthisgazingintothecrystalballmaybealittle bewilderingtotheuninitiated.Itcomesfromthefact thatwehavebeentryingtoassessthepossibleeffectsoftherecentchangeofheartofthecommunist leadershipwithregardtotheirformeridol,Stalin.

Ifwestepbackfromthepresenttogainalittle moreperspective,thesituationbecomesalittleclearer.Sdef,wehavetakenforgrantedthattherecent eventstheSovietUnionwouldhaverepercussions inthefieldofreligion.This,inturn,supposedthat Stalinwasresponsibleforthereligiousoranti-religiouspolicyfollowedbytheSovietstate.

Thereissometruth,nodoubt,inthislastsuppositionbutStalindidnotinauguratethefightagainst religion.Infact,thebloodiestphaseoftheantireligiouscampaignwascomingtoendbythetime Stalin'scontrolovertheSovietstatebecamesecure.

In1934,underthemenaceofawarwithGermany, Stalingaveanewdirectiontothefightagainstreligion.InsteadoftryingtoforcethepeopleofRussia togiveupLheirreligionandaccepttheMarxistLeninistcreed,Stalintoldhissubjectsthattheway touprootreligionwastoindoctrinatetheyounger generationstofurnishthemwithasubstitutefor religion.

Withhisusualmethod.hewentaboutaskingwhat religiondidforpeople.Theanswerwasthatreligion gavepeopleguidanceintheirdailylife.Italsogave themconsolationwhenthatsamedailylifebecame unbearable.Stillmoreimportant,religiongave peopleapurposeinlife.

Thecarryingoutofthisgrandioseanddiabolical enterprisehasbeenthehistoryofreligioninthe SovietUnionsince1934.WheneverStalinthought theremightbesomeadvantageinshowingfavour tothisorthatformoftraditionalreligion,hewould re-openafewchurches.mosquesorsynagogues.

Neverdidhethinkofallowingtheclergytotake uptheirworkofteachingtheirfaithful.Neverwere theyallowedtoopenschoolsorprintpapersorbooks. Whenthetemporaryusefulnessofthereligiousbodies hadceasedtobeimportant,heagaintookuphislongtermoperationofsupplantingreligionwiththeMarxistcreedwithits"church"-theCommunistPartyandits"god"-Stalinhimself.

Onceuponatimethere livedagoodmonkwhowas verymuchtroubledbyhis badhealth.Allhistired oldbodyached.Hecould notkneelandfastanddo alltheotherthingsthatthe othermonksdid. Hecouldnotmakethe Lentenfast,liveonbread andwater,etc.,andhadto havegoodfood.Whenhe roseinthenighttosay MatinsandLauds,hefelt dizzyandill. Onedaythepainwasso badthathedecidedto studyherbsandseeifhe couldsloanythingtoalleviateit.Hegrewverygood atallthevarioususesof herbs,andasthemonths wentbybecamesoengrossedinthestudythathegave lessandlesstimetothe fewprayersthatheusedto say.
