Takingashistext:"Make us,0Lord,tohaveaperpetualfearandloveofThy HolyNameforThounever failesttogovernthosewhom Thoudostsolidlyestablish inThylove,"FatherFitzmauricesaidthatinthe courseofhistorytherehad beenmanygreatleadersof men,menwhohadgiven courageandinspirationto theirfellows,menwhohad ledtheirfellowmento heightsofachievement whichweredeemedimpossibleuntilthen.
EssentialDifference
Therewerethosewho soughttobracketthename ofJesusChristwiththe nameofothermenofrenownandtoplaceHimon thesameplaneasgreat leadersinhistory,butthere wasanessentialdifference betweenOurBlessedLord andeveryotherman.
Thosemenwereleaders intheirparticularsphere. Theyhadlefttheirnames asamemory,perhapseven asaninspiration,butOurBlessedSaviourhadleftHis nameasapower,asa means.Thatwastheessentialdifference.
MilitarymenwereinspiredbythedeedsofaNapoleon;philosopherswere stirr ytheworksof eitt suchAristotleandPlato.

FatherFitzmauricerecalledthatsomeyearsago hewasinLondonwhenhe visitedHydeParkCorner. Itwasthecelebratedplace offreespeechwhereanyonewithasoapboxandan idea,andsomewithasoap
notseekallthematerial pleasureandgainsthislife wouldsupply.Inthose thingslaysecurityandcontentment,theyreasoned. Thepagantrulysoughthis pienowthathemightenjoy itbeforelifeclosed.
Butiftherewasanother life,andChristiansknew thattherewas,theysought thestrengthtoseethingsin theirtrueperspectiveso thattheymightovercome thedifficultiesandtrialsof thislife.Itwastoenable themtodothisthatJesus becameoneofthem.He hadnotcometolayfurther burdensontheirshoulders, butrathertoliftonefrom themforHegavetheassurancethatanything sought inHisNamewouldbe granted.

"Theyearnowdrawingtoaclosesawa continuinggoodstandardofendeavourby thebranch,"itwasstatedinthereportread totheannualmeetingoftheGosnellsbranch oftheHolyNameSocietyrecently.
Itwasexplainedthat membershiphadbeenmaintained.Lossesduetodeparturesfromtheparishand bylapsesonthepartof severalmembershadbeen compensatedbynewadditionstotheranks.The strengthoftheseniorbranch wasnow21memberswith sixjuniors.
Attendanceatthemonthly HolyCommunionsshoweda heartening improvement. Theaverageattendanceat HolyCommunionof85per centcomparedwithanaverageof78percentin1954
However,theattendance ateveningdevotionsof41 percentwasanall-time low. styearitwas58 per Itwouldappear that ymembershadlost sightoftheessentialimportanceofattendanceatthese devotions.

AstudyoftheConstitutionwouldrevealtherich indulgencesattachingtoattendanceatthisexercise.
Attendancefromthe branchattheannualretreatswasmostsatisfying. Almost50percentofthe seniormembershipattendedanditisarecordof whichmemberscanbe proud.
OSBORNEPARK:
Thesecretary(Mr.R. Rowland)complainedofthe apathyofmembersinhis annualreporttotheannual meetingoftheOsborne Parkbranch.Hesaidthat atthecommencementofthe yeartheutmostdifficulty wasexperiencedinfilling theexecutiveoffices.
However,otheractivities inwhichthebranchhadengagedhadbeenoutstandinglysuccessful.
TherehadbeenagratifyingresponsetotheDayof RosariesheldonPassion Sunday,whilsttheannual processioninhonourofOur Lady,despiteanearlypostponement,hadfittingly honouredtheoccasion.
OurLady'spilgrim statuewasstillonthemove intheparish,bringingits blessingstothehomesit entered.Membershipshowedanincreaseof19,andthe newyearopenedwitha membershipof69.

Itisclearlyabsurdtosaythatthegroupersroused theterribleoutbreakofsectarianism,forthegroups tohaveanychanceofsuccessmustoftheirnature benon-sectarian,whichinfacttheywereandare. Whatmorepowerfulevidencecanbeadducedin thatdirectionthanthattheirpoliticalwingisled byanAnglicanvestryman,Mr.Joshua?Itwas Dr.Evattalonewhoraisedtherabble-rousingcry andhis,too,isthesoleresponsibilityforhavingincreasedCommunisticinfluenceintheleft-wingof theLabourParty.Despitetheairyassurancesof Mr.Chamberlain,nothingwhateverhasbeenput forwardbytheLabourPartytoreplacetheindustrialgroupsinthecontainmentofCommunism.
IftheSydneyjournalistiscorrectinhisclaim that"thebishopswillfindithardtoresistthe conclusionthatthelaststateisworsethanthefirst," heisrightinasensetowhichhehasnotadverted. ThelaststateoftheLabourPartyisagreatdeal worseinthattheirleadershavesoldouttodirection fromCommunismintheunions.Thebreakforced ontheSantamariagroupsmerelyprecipitatedwhat wouldhavebeenthelogicaloutcomeanywayof theEvatt-ChamberlaincourtshipofCommunism. ButthepreservationoftrueLabourprinciples,of integrityandautonomyinthesurvivinggroups isthebestthingwhichhashappenedinthepoliticalfield.ForalthoughDr.Evattcontinueshis wreckingtacticsintheorganisationalsphere,atleast hecannottouchthedepositofLabourtruthwhich willbedevelopedamongthegroupers,notalongthe MarxistlinebutalongtraditionalChristianlines whichplacethewelfareoftheworkingmanabove politicaljockeyingandpersonalambition.

ApartfromdemandingthatCatholicskeepwithin themorallawandthesocialprinciplesenunciated bytheChurchtheBishopshavenodirectcontrol overthepoliticalactivitiesofCatholics.Soitisthat aCatholicisfreetobelongtotheLiberal,the LabourortheCountryParties.Heislikewisefree toestablishapartyormovementwhichseemsto himtoexpressmoreperfectlytheCatholicoutlook onpublicaffairs.
TheChurchitself,representedbytheauthoritativeteachingbodyoftheHierarchy,confinesitself totheenunciationandelaborationofChristian principlesastheyapplytoprivateandtopubiclife. Furtherthanthattheycannotanddonotgo.

InthematteroftheAnzacDayobservance,there isacasewithparticularpoint.Itmuststrikethe organisersasanomalousthatatleastone-fifthof theirmembers-returnedex-servicemenandwomen -aredebarredbyconscientiousreasonsfromattendingthecommemorationbecauseitcomprisesa Protestantreligiousservice.Whatissogallingis thattheorganisershavenotgiventheslightestindicationthattheyhaveevenconsideredtheCatholicobjection.Theygivetheimpressionthatitisa troublesomeobjectionwhichcanbelightlydismissed.Yetitlendsitselftothesimplestsolutionby wayofconfiningthereligiouscelebrationtothe respectivechurchesandturningthenationalobservanceintooneofpurelysecularcontent.

Blueprintsforthechurch werepreparedbymembers ofthe7thWorksSectionof theRoyalAustralianEngineers.'Itwasbuiltunder thesupervisionofoneofthe Battalion'scarpenters,PrivateJ.Andrews,ofMentone,Victoria. Beforehejoinedthe Army,PrivateAndrewswas acarpenterandjoiner,but hadneverbuiltachurch.
Inerectingthebuilding membersoftheBattalion hadtocontendwithfrozen groundandadverseweather conditions.Holesforthe foundationpostshadtobe blastedout.Overtimehad tobeworkedtocomplete thechurchbeforethebattalionbrokecampreadyto embark.
Theywerestillhammeringandsawingminutesbeforethepresentationceremonybegan.
Thecompletedchurch washandedovertothe peopleofthevillagebythe Battalion'sCommandingOfficer,Lieutenant-Colonel0. D.Jackson,ataserviceattended by Australian soldiersandKoreanvillagers.
Thechurch'sseatingcapacityforonlyonehundred wasfullyoccupied,andan overflowcongregationcrowdedaroundthedoors andlookedthroughwindows astheserviceproceeded.

Thevillageinwhichthe churchwasbuiltiscalled Chuwoli.Itisonthe38th parallel,justoutsidethe siteoftheBattalion'scamp.
Thevillagewasdestroyed duringthewar,andtheadjoiningpaddyfieldswere neglected,asfightingswung backandforthacrossthe parallel.
Duringthepasttwoyears, villagershavereturnedto rebuildtheirhousesandreclaimthebattle-scarred paddyfields.Itisstilla littlemorethanasqualid shantytown,builtlargely fromdiscardedrationboxes, flattenedoutferrycans,and otherdebrisofwar. Thousandsofhomes havesomethingofthatart inthem-astatuette,pottery,etc.-buttomethat caseintheBritishMuseum broughtbackallthelittle Greekchildren,playingin thesun,ontheoliveslopes.
Thesewerethechildren thatsogailyplayedwith ourownAustraliansoldiers, whoseparentshidthem fromtheenemy,andwhose homesshelteredthem.

Theplayersstoodsome distanceaway,holdingacup ofwater(wineiftheywere older)whichtheytriedto throwintooneofthevessels,thusmakingthecupvesseltipup-oneside goingupandtheother down.
Theplayerwhothrewin suchamannerastospill leastofhiswater,andknock thedishwiththemostforce wasthewinner.
