Beforeagatheringofabout500,HisGracetheArchbishoplast Sundalessed,openedandhandedovertotheMaristFathersa magnif1rentnewschool-churchdedicatedtoSaintMariaGoretti, inthenewly-formedparishofRedcliffe.

ingthreeSisterstostaffthe school.Hewasallthemore gratefulbecauseheknew thatitwasonlyatgreat inconveniencetheSistersof Mercyweredoingso.

Redcliffewasfortunatein securingtheservicesofthe SistersofMercy,anOrder whosecontributiontothe Catholiceducationsystem wasanotableandglorious one.

Heappealedtotheparents toco-operatewiththe Sisters,andhewasconfidentthattheywouldhave reasontobeprouderand prouderofthatschooland oftheirteachersinthe courseoftime.

FatherHarcombesaid thatmembersofhisinstitutefelttheyhadbeensingularlyblessedbytheoffer madetothembytheArchbishopattheendoflast year. HethankedHisGrace,on behalfoftheSocietyof Mary,forinvitingthemto thisState.Heassuredthe Archbishopthatanything theMaristFatherswouldbe abletodofortheprogress ofthespiritoftheFaithin W.A.theywouldgladlyand readilydo.

RemarkableDay

FatherStinsonwelcomed theArchbishopandpointed outthatitwasaremarkabledayinthehistoryof Redcliffe-anewparish, anewchurch,anewschool, anewOrderintothediocese,andanewcommunityofnunsfortheparish.

FatherStinsonsaidithad becomeevidenttohim, nearlytiyearsago,that therapid,7xpansioninRedcliffemadeitessentialthat additionalspiritualcarewas requiredtoservetheneeds oftheareaatBelmont-Redcliffe.

Withthatobjectinmind hehadaskedforanassistantpriest,andthedistrict hadbeensingularlyblessed toobtaintheservicesof suchazealousyoungpriest asFatherNewbold.

Astimeelapseditbecame increasinglyevidentthat Redcliffemustbeestablishedasaseparateparish.

Formanyyearspastthe onlyprovisionforMasswas theuseoftherecreational hallinDunreathmigrant hostel.Thechildreninthe areahadtotravellongdistancesandnegotiatedangerousroadstogettothe Catholicschool.

Itwasimperativethat moreadequatefacilitiesbe providedforthedistrict. Thefirststepwastoacquire asuitableproperty.The onlysizablepropertycentrallysituatedwasthearea onwhichthenewschool hadbeenerected.

Thepropertyis54acres andthehousetoserveas

thepresbyteryhadbeen acquiredfor£3,200last May.Planswerethen drawnupforthepresent school-church,andwork wascommencedinthefirst weekinNovember.

Thebuildinghadbeen completedin34months.It consistsoffourlargeclassrooms,sacristy,Sisters' room,tuckshop,cloak roomsandspaciousverandahs.

Thebuildingisofbrick andtileandspecialfeatures ofitarethetapestrybrick dado,fluorescentlighting, built-inwirelesssetsand cupboards,non-actinicglass usedthroughout,stained glasswindowsinthesacristyandTimsonplastic blackboardsinsertedinthe foldingdoors.Therooms haveallbeenpaintedindelicatepastelshades.

FatherStinsonpaidhigh tributetothedesignerand contractor,andsaidithad beenagreatpleasureto workwithhim.

Hechallengedanyonepresenttoproduceanyother contractorwhocouldhave builtthatmagnificentbuildingfor£.13,300.

HealsothankedallMr. Costello'sworkmen.

Inwelcomingthechairmanandmembersofthe RoadsBoardpresent,Father Stinsonremindedthemthat thenewbuildingwasa greatacquisitiontothedistrict.

HisGracewelcomedthe SocietyofMarytothe Archdiocese.Theirname andfamehadpreceded them,hesaid.Theycame tosupplementthesplendid workthatwasbeingaccomplishedbytheother ReligiousOrders.

Theywouldbringwith themthefinetraditionsthat characterisedtheirapostolatewherevertheywereestablished.

LatertheywouldestablishaMissionHouseand whencircumstancespermittedtheywouldconducta boys'schoolwhichwould besorelyneededtocater fortherapidlydeveloping district.

TheMaristFoundationat Redcliffe,theArchbishop said,wouldbeaspiritual power-houseradiatingits beneficlent influence throughoutthedistricteast oftheCauseway,throughoutthemetropolitanarea andindeedthroughoutthe lengthandbreadthofthe State.

Theschoolwasup-to-date indesignandamenities, saidHisGrace.Hethanked Mr.Costelloandtheworkmenassociatedwithhim. Consideringthetypeand sizeofthebuildingthecost wasveryreasonable.

faceditwithtremendous courage,knowingofcourse thatthepeoplewoulddo anythinginwhichheled themforthegoodoftheir parishlife.Asaconsequencetheynowsawthe openingofthatmagnificent school.

CourageAdmired

Thereremainedthetremendoustaskofcarryingandextinguishingalarge debt.Thereweremany whowouldthinkthemmad fortakingonsuchaburden.Therewerethosewho saidthattherewasnoplace forreligionineducationas theyhadlearntrecently fromthecorrespondence columnsofthedailypapers.

Thatlargedebthadbeen takenonbythepeopleof theparishbecauseitwas theonlywaythattheycould givetheirchildrenatrue educationfromwhichGod wasnotleftout."Weadmireyourcourageandpray Godthatyourchildrenwill behappyandsuccessfulin thisnewschool,"saidHis Lordship.

Subiacoledalltheway, buttookalongtimeto masterNorthCarlisle'stight defence.Athalf-time,Subiacoledbyfivepointsto two.

NowthatispreciselytheLeft-wingrockonwhich theunityoftheLabourPartyfounderedsotragically.Duringthepast30yearsaspiritofsocial realityhasbeenuneasilyproddingtheconservative soulofLabour.WhilsttheBolshevikRevolutionof 1917gaveapronouncedfilliptothosewhofeltthat Fabiantechniquesofachievingsocialisationwere draggingatthewheelsofsocialreform,theexpansion(andstillmore,therevelationofthereal nature)ofCommunismduringthenexttwodecades gavethemorethoughtfulpause.Themajorreforms advocatedbythegradualismoftheWebbswere effectedovernightinbloodintheSoviet.Butso farfromfadingaway,accordingtothetext-books, thesuperStatebywhichallthiswasachieved,grew larger,morepowerfulandmorepermanent.More alarminglyithadallthecharacteristicsofthe historictyrannies,aggravatedtothenthdegree.

Thatreactionandcounter-reactionmaybetraced inthestoryoftheAustralianLabourParty.Mr. JohnLangtellsthehistoryoftheoverpoweringenthusiasmwithwhichthesocialisationobjectivewas receivedin1921andoftheamazingverbalextravagancesofmensuchasthelateJohnScullinwho, perhapsnotunnaturally,werenotabletoestimate whattheBolshevikRevolutionwasandwhatitwas tobecome.

SOCIALISATIONFAILEDINPRACTICE

Thedevelopmentofthecounter-blasttoallthat mistakenidealismhastakenmorethanageneration totakecoherentshape.Butithasdonesoandits mouldingwasmadebymenwhocouldseewhere thetotalitarianaimsofsocialismmustendinterms ofhumanliberty.Itisonlypartofthetruthto say,asourmorningcontemporaryhasdone,that the"currentLabour'interpretation'ofthesocialistic objectiveisframedwithsufficientvaguenessto satisfyboththeLeftandRightwingsandtoavoid publichostility,thusplayingforpartyunity."

RatherisitFabianisminreversebymenwhodid notwantLabourtobecomemerelyatamefollower ofbloodyCommunism.Itwasasocialcompromise hammeredoutontheanvilofsocialexperience. ForbyLaboureffortintheformulationofpublic consciencemanyofthemajorreformsenvisagedon itsemergenceasasocialforcehadbecomerealities. Itcouldreasonablybequestionedwhetherthere wasneedorurgencyoffurthersocialisation.

Onthenegativesidetherewasthehorriblewitnessofthedepthsofservitudeanddegradation totalitarianpolitics-ofwhateverhue-entailedfor thecommonman.Moreovertherewasathandirrefutableevidencethataproportion-andthata

Soitisthattheleft-wingofLabourwhobeganby proclaimingthemselves"progressives"andbeing acceptedassuch,havebeenshownbytheturnof thehistoricalwheeltobethereactionaries.Their aimsareidenticalwithCommunismbuttheyhave weakstomachsforitsmethods,despitetheirundeniablesuccess.Hencetheyhavenothingtocommendtheminademocraticorderwhichabominates aliketheaimsandthemethodsofCommunism.They standforatotalitariansystemwhichdemocrats willnotstand.Andthatisthebleak,impracticable, indefensiblepoint-of-no-returntowhichtheEvattChamberlainalliancewoulddrivetheLabourParty back.Itisanattempttoputtheclockbackwith avengeanceandcouldonlybepromotedbymen whocannotunderstandhistoryorareimperviousto itssternadmonitions.

VENERATIONOFSOCIALISTRELICS

Inthisworldofhalf-lightsandshadowsitisas wellthatMr.Chamberlaindoesnotconsiderthe winningofseatsinParliamentasaprimaryobjective.Foritisverydifficulttoseewhathis philosophycouldofferinthepracticalorder.Even apartfromthesplitwhichwasengineeredin Labourranksoverthisvenerationoftherelicsof theWebbsandThomasMann,itisdifficulttosee howDr.Evattcouldhaveaspiredtoelectoralsuccesswithadomesticpolicyofgovernmentalcharity andaforeignpolicyof"followMoscow."

But,ofcourse,Mr.Chamberlainisnotserious aboutnotwantingpoliticalcontrol,Forheknows. aswellasthenextone,thatalltheformulationof policybasedonsocialisticobjectivewillbeabortive ifthereisnopoliticalmachineryforitsimplementation.

Moreover,tojudgefromDr.Evatt'selectoralcampaignandMr.Chamberlain'ssupportofit,therewas aquiteabnormaldesireandexpectationofParliamentarypower.Further,whyisMr.Chamberlainpreparedtogloatoverthe"almostcomplete politicalannihilationofthosewhocommencedtheir careersasLabourpoliticiansandfinallyendedin betrayingthecause"ifpoliticalpowerhasnextto nomeaning?

WORKING-CLASSLEADERSHIP

ThefactofthematteristhatMr.Chamberlain isacareerist.Heisnowrushingintoformulate policybecausetherightlobeofLabour'sbrainhas beenamputated.Heseesauniqueopportunityfor therevitalisationofFabianisminanOpposition whichhasnoopposition.ItisatypicallyCommunistoutlookonthedemocraticprocess-"Youmay voteforanyoneatallprovideditisI."

SeeminglyMr.ChamberlainisawarethatLabour prospects,withitspresentpolicydictatedbythe left-wingandunderitspresentleader,ofaspiring totheguidanceofthenationarenil.Whenhe castsaboutforproofofLabour'sabilitytoproduce capableadministratorsandplannershehiesback tothegranddaysofCurtinandChifley.Andheis righttodoso,thoughhefailstomaketheobvious inference.

WhileLabourkepttoworking-classleadershipof mentrainedinthehardschoolofpracticalpolitics ithadpopularconfidence,itcouldwinandretain officeanditturnedoutsomeofthebestadministratorsinthecountry'shistory.Butthemoment itturnedtotheintellectuals,trainedinarm-chairs associalistdoctrinairesitlostpopularsupport,failed thriceingeneralelectionsandgeneratedwidespreadsuspicionbecauseofitsattemptstorevive worn-outsocialisticenthusiasms.Itwillfalleven furtherifitspresentleadershiprunsthefullgamut offollyintryingto"interpret"thesocialisation objectiveinMarxistterms.

WHOARETHEBETRAYERS?

Forthesakeoftherecord,ifnotfortheloveof truth.Mr.Chamberlainshouldnotbeallowedto getawaywiththedescriptionas"careerists"and "betrayersofthecause"ofthosemenwhostoodout againsttheimpenetrationofCommunismintothe LabourParty.Itisall-too-significantthatMr. Chamberlain'smanifestoregardingthefutureofhis Partycontainsnotasinglesyllableabouttheissue thatcleavedit.Onemightreasonablylookforsome accountofthealternativehehimselfproposedfor thecontainmentoftheRedmenace,followingthe destructionoftheindustrialgroups.Hehasnothing tosay,ofcourse,becausenothinghasbeendone andnothingcanbedone.Majorunions,riddedof theRedtraitorsbythegroups.havefallenback underRedtutelagewhileMr.Chamberlain,inprofoundphilosophiccastofmind,lookedon. Hemaytalkuntilblueintheface,buthecannotconcealthatpresentpolicyinthehighest councilsofLabouranditsprojectionsforthefuture representatacitalliancewithCommunismbothat homeandabroad.TheAustralianpeoplewillnot toleratethatkindofasell-outandittakesaman ofenormousgall,atthisstageofhistory,tocall theopponentsofCommunismcareerists(whenthey gaveuptheircareerstofightMr.Chamberlain's friends)andbetrayers(whentheyrefusedtoaccept theEvatt-typeacquiescenceinReddesigns).

Mr.Chamberlainwillhavetodoalotbetterthan hehasdoneinhiscurrentmanifestoifheistobe acceptedasaphilosopherofLabourpolitics.For inphilosophyofanyschoolprimaryrequirements aretheabilitytofacefactsandtothink.

THERECORD

SubversionMakesGreaterInroads

WhateveruncertaintyexistedabouttherealleadershipintheKremlinhasbeenfinallydissipated bytheemergenceofKhrushchevopenlyasCzarof theSoviet.Therewas,ofcourse,verylittledoubt aboutthematterforquitesometime-fromtheState visittoTitotothepropagandisttourofAsia. Khrushchev,inhisfirstpublicappearanceasEmperor,wasrefreshinglyblunt.Betweenpeacefulcoexistenceandthemostdevastatingwarinhistory therewasnothirdcourse,hesaid.Andthatis tantamounttosayingthatRussia/hasacceptedthe grimalterantiveofwar,becausetheyknow,assane menintheWestknow,thatco-existenceasthe Sovietusesthephraseismerelyatrickofpropaganda.Co-existence,sofarastheKremlinisconcerned,willonlybepossiblebytheabjectsurrender ofthe,enemiesoftheSoviet.

ThattheSoviethadkeptleashedthedogsofwar untilthismomentisattributabletomanycauses. ForonethingtheRussiansuntilrecentlywerelagginginatomicresearchandwouldstillberelatively unpreparedhaditnotbeenforthetrayalof secretsbysuchpeopleasFuchs,Ponteco andthe Rosenbergset.Foranotherthing,theviethas countedheavilyonthecollapseofCapitalist economiesthroughnaturaldisintegration.Butin thisrespecttheyhavebeendisappointed,forthe fiscalstructuresoftheWesthaveshownsurprising resilience,buttressed,ironically,byakindofcoercivecharityevokedbytheneedofkeepingunderdevelopednationsfromthegripofMarxism.Even more,theSovietreliesondomesticsubversionand inthisdirectionhasachievedasuccesswhichmust haxeexceededthemostsanguineexpectations.

ThecatastropheofthefallofSouth-EastAsia fromthedefeatofChiangKai-shektothelossof NorthVietnamwaslongpreparedbyanestof traitorsintheAmericanForeignOffice,received WesternapprovalatYaltaandwasconsolidatedby theweak-kneedprocessesofGeneva.Thepooling ofatomicknow-howbetweentheWesternPowers waseffectivelyhamstrungbythedisastrousleakageswhichoccurredinthehighestcouncilsof Britain,culminatingintheflightofBurgessand McLeantoMoscow.Thatwasaheavyblowtothe Alliedcause,butitmayonlybesymptomaticofa muchmoregeneral,deeply-rootedandhiddendisaffection.FurthermoretheunprincipledandinconsistentforeignpolicypursuedbytheUnitedKingdominEuropeandAsiahasmateriallyaidedSoviet designs.ItmusthavebeenmorethanalittlereassuringtoMoscowwhenEarlAttleevisitedthis areaastheunofficialambassadorofMaoTse-tung.

TheinfiltrationofMarxistideasiseverywhere evidentinoursociety.ItdidnotrequiretherevelationsofPetrovtoshowthatthepenetrationof Marxismhadmadeiselffeltinimportantgovernmentposts,newspapermen,politiciansandtrade unionofficials.Onecouldpickupthedailypress andfindregularadvocacyoftheMoscowlineon South-EastAsiabeingpluggedbyprofessorsofthe NatioanlUniversityandmembersoftheDepartmentofExternalAffairs.Nowtherothassetin withaninternationalbodysuchastheWorldCouncil ofChurches,sothatithasbeendeflectedfromits originalaimstorestoreChristianunityandhas becomeasoundingboardforthesilliestandmost hypocriticallineeverputoutbytheKremlinthatChristianityandCommunismcanco-exist.

IntellectuallyWon

PreparedtofindthelatterblacklyFascist,hefound insteadthatitofferedideas forsocialbettermentthat struckhimasfarbetter thantheMarxistprogrammeandStalinistpractice.

HegotsomeCatholic books.Themoreheread, themorehewasconvinced oftherightnessofCatholicism.

Therecameatimewhen hewasintellectuallycertainthatCatholicismwastrue. Buthecouldnotmakean actoffaith.Hetooktogoing surreptitiouslyintoaCatholicchurch,morningand night,onhiswaytoand fromthe"Worker"office.

SecularVacuum

But,aswasremarkedat thestart,thebigthinghere istheexplanationofpeople's becomingCommunists.A desireforradicalchangein society,fortheforcibleand finaleliminationofinequitiesandabuses,isprominent amongthesereasons.

Butalsothereisthe emptinessofsectarianreligion,itsabandonmentof integralandeternaltruthin favourofbitsandpiecesof secularisticpseudo-wisdom.

Inaddition,thereisthe stunted,fragmentarycharacterofwhatpassesfor philosophy,itslackofsatisfactoryanswerstothe sovereignquestionsabout humanlife.

Thepartyprovidesafixedreligion,anentirephilosophicalsystem,achanceto makesacrifices,ahavenfor guiltyconsciences.aridan instrumentofrevolt.
