Itisaboutthreemonths-thenormalperiodof long-serviceleave-sinceIhadthepleasureofcontributingtothesecolumns.Iamafraidthatthrough poororganisationandindecisiononmypart,Ileft theeditorintheembarrassingpositionofbeing unabletotellhisreadersifandwhenIwouldbe resumingduties.ForthisIapologisetohimandto thembecausepersonalconsiderationsmadeadefinite decisionverycomplex.Ishouldalsoliketothank thosekindpeoplewhowroteinseekingtheresumptionofthispage.Nobody,Isuppose,likestofeel heistalkingtohimselfanddespitetheeternal guerdonspromisedtothosewhopropagatethetruth, thehumanweaknessinusseekssmallconsolations. FortheseIamprofoundlygrateful.

SOVIETHASCHOSENFIELDANDTIME

WhatitwasworthinthemindoftheSoviethas beenamplyevidencedbyRussianactioneversince. Thevodkaparties,thesmiles,thespiritofcamaraderieuponwhichourfatuousPresspinnedsomany fondhopesvanishedovernightandintheclearlight ofmorningtherewastheRussianBearinhis immutablenature-avid,truculent,asreadytorend astohug.

ThatspuriouscoinofSovietpretenceandinsincerityshowedrapidlytotheWestinfaceand obverse.ThenthechangeswererungintheEast withstartlingsuddennesswhichdemonstratedthat themachineryofthosepeaceoffensiveshadbeen longandcarefullyprepared;perhapsthefinishing toucheshadbeenaddedduringtheactualcourtship periodwiththeWest.

TheKremlinagainhadtheinitiative.Ithad chosenitsbattlefieldsandithadselectedthetime withenormousskill.Ingeneral,theatmosphereof Westernpoliticswasoneofdisappointmentand frustration.Americawasledbyaphysicallyailing President;BritainbyaPrimeMinisterwhose ineptnesswasintrinsic,butalsoheightenedbythe recordofhispredecessor;inFrancemoraldecay wasfaradvanced.SincethefirstGenevaconference hadsulliedthegloryofDienBienPhu,thespirit ofsurrenderhaddevelopedtothepitchwherethe cynicalFrenchpublichadvotedoutrightforacombinationofCommunistsandnincompoops.

Britainhascutasorryfigureintheaffair,butit isnothingnewforthatnationtohavesupported bothsidessimultaneously.Wehaveatasteofthe samesortofhypocrisyinwhattotheBritishisthe FarEastandtoustheNearNorth.EarlAttlee's visittoRedChinaandsubsequentpropagandatour ofthiscountrywasofsimilarmoralcomplexionto British"policy"intheMiddleEast.

IfitwereBritishinvolvementalonewemightbe persuadedtodrythosetears.ButinSovieteyes andworldopinionwhatEnglanddoesispartofthe collectiveactionoftheWest.Sothat,whileBulganinandKhrushchevcouldmakethemostinflammatoryspeechesagainstBritaininIndiaandother Asiancountries,themendaciouscharacterofmuch theyputforwardaboutthepastcouldreadilybe swallowedbypeoplewithaneyeonpresentskulduggery.

WhenitisrecalledhowtheAbbePierrehas wagedasingle-handedcampaigntoprevent Parisiansdyingonthestreetforlackofhouses,it maybeconcededthattherearegreat,immediate problemsdemandinginstantsolution.

ButwhenonereadsofaneminentCatholicauthor sayingthatsocialproblemswouldbemorejustly solvedbytheLeftists,onemaybepardonedfor enquitingwhetherFranceisindeedapagannatiots. Whattheprivateschoolsseekisnotasubsidyin thesenseofagovernmentgrantgivenoutof charity.Itisaclaimmadeinstrictjusticefora disbursementofaproportionalshareintaxesearmarkedforeducationbecause,forreasonsofconscience,wecannotusetheneutralschoolsprovided bytheState.

Ifthisclaimberecognised-andithasbeen almosteverywhereelseintheBritishCommonwealth-itwouldrelieveasituationwhichisbecomingintolerablyonerousfortheCatholicparent. Butwewouldhavelong,longthoughtsbeforewe reachedtheconfusionalpositionofFrenchintellectualsinagreeingthatsomesocialproblemismore importantthantheChristianeducationofyouth, andthatthatproblemwouldbebettersolvedby Communistsandtheirfellow-travellers.

Itwasarawminingtown thenandtheyoungnun founditabigchangefrom MountSt.Joseph,North Sydney.Fromthatdayall herreligiouslifeofteaching wasspentinW.A.

Shewasgentle,kindly, andmotherlysuperiorat NewNorcia,Manjimup, Busselton,Jarrandale,Ke1lerberrinandMoora.
