Thoseprofessedwere SisterMaryAntoninus (Belfast)andSisterMary Cecilia,SisterMaryDolores andSisterMaryRegina (Dublin).

PresentwithHisLordship BishopGummer,whopresidedattheceremonies, wereV.Rev.FatherO'Connor,Adm.,Rev.Father Bryan(Morawa),andRev. FathersTobin,Fitzgerald, BardenandDowglassof Geraldton.

Thefamilyandfriendsof SisterMaryJulianwere presentasguestsofthe community.

Theoccasionalsermon waspreachedbyRev.J. Barden,whointhecourse ofhisremarksremindedthe SistersofthewordsofSt. Paul:"Wehavenotherea lastingcity."Tomany peopleitseemedoddthat somanyyoungpeopleshouldabandontheworld toserveGodinthereligious life,butwhenthematter wasreasonedoutitwasa veryrationalwayoflife.

SymbolismOfVows

Itwasmerelyamatterof followingouttheheart'sdesires,andstrivingtowardstheeternalcitywhich shouldbeourgoal.

Thereligiouslifeshould behappy,asitisacasting asideoftheobstacleswhich holdbackthesoulfrom God.

Thethreevowsofreligiousprofessionareasymbol ofthethreenailswhich fastenedOurLordtothe Cross,andshouldserveto detachusfromtheworld andattachustoHim.

Inillustrationofthe significanceofthereligious vocation,thepreacherrecalledanunusualstatueof theLittleFlowerofJesus atthePropagandaCollege inRome.

Inthisstatuethesaint appearedtobecladinsilken garments,whichstreamout behindherasshehastens forwardtohergoal.Her eyesarefixedstraight ahead,andinherhandsshe carriesabook,whichis probablythebookofthe NewTestamentbywhich shehaddirectedherlife fromherearliestyears.

ThelateMrs.Gilroywas borninSydneyonApril14, 1869.Hermaidennamewas CatherineSlattery.

Sixty-twoyearsagoshe marriedMr.WilliamGilroy, whopredeceasedherby nearly15years.

Togethertheylivedat Glebe,RockdaleandCarltonand,duringthelatter partoftheirlives,at Brighton-le-Sands.

Mr.andMrs.Gilroyhad sevenchildren,butthe eldest,aboy,diedininfancy.

Tengrandchildrenand twogreat-grandchildren alsosurviveher.

ThelateMrs.Gilroy'slife wasdistinguishedbytwo greatloves-herfamilyand herreligion.

Ofherremarkablefaith andpiety,HisEminence oncewrote:"Mymother's wasthedeepestfaithithas beenmyprivilegetoencounter;itneverfaltered; itwasexercisedconstantly: itrelatedtoeverything.

"EarlyinlifeGodblessed mewiththerealisationthat herattitudewasright.It haseverbeenmyambition tolearnconstantlythelessonshetaught,hardlyever byprecept,butconstantly byexample." Afterhiselevationtothe Cardinalatein1946shewas anhonouredguestata numberofpublicfunctions, butforthemostpartshe preferredtoremaininthe background.

HisHolinessPopePius XII,whoseownmother livedtoseehersonraised totheCardinalate,bestowedonMrs.Gilroythehigh honouroftheCrossPro EcclesiaetPontifice. Thelawquestionwasenactedin1938duringthe TazioccupationofAustria.

TheCatholicobservers saidthereisnevertheless reasontohopethatthe court'srulingwillpavethe wayforanearlylegal amendmentthatwillgive churchaswellascivilmarriagesfullrecognitionunder thelaw.

Thenetwork'sChristmas broadcaststothecaptive peoplesbeganonChristmas: EvewithmidnightMass, otherreligiousservicesand sermonsintheirownlanguages. Someoftheserviceswere broadcastlivefromchurchesinMunichandotherGermancities.Otherswere pre-recordedintheUnited States.

SpecialChristmasmessagesfromPresidentDwight D.Eisenhower,Secretaryof StateJohnFosterDulles andotherAmericanleaderswerealsobeamedbehindtheIronCurtainby RadioFreeEurope's29 transmitters.

TheDutchCatholicdoctors'organisationsaidthat inpreparingaprovisional programmeforthecongress, "itwasourintentiontoaim ataclarificationofthelaw oftheStateconcerningsicknessandhealth."

Itsaidthatthecongress willdealespeciallywith thatpartofthelawwith whichthedoctorassuchis directlyconcerned.

Itaddedthatthemeeting wasexpected"toproducea positiveCatholiccontributionfromthemedicalprofessiononthiscomprehensivetopicinwhichmany othergroupsalsoshouldbe interested."

TheRoosevelt-Litvinov Agreementof1933,"Le Courrier"pointedout,providedforanAmerican priesttoserveAmerican CatholicsinMoscow.The Sovietshavenevergiven theAmericanpriestfilling thatpostfullfreedomto travelfreelythroughoutthe country.

Negotiations following FatherBissonnette'sexpulsionledtothegrantingof visastobothFatherDion andArchbishopBoris,the dailynoted.

TheUnitedStates,however,declaredthatthe Sovietprelatewouldbeexpectedtorestricthisactivitiestothoseparallelingthe ministryoftheAmerican

BeforetheHolyFatherbroadcasthismessage fromtheConsistorialHallintheVaticanpalace,he receivedChristmasandNewYear'sgreetings throughHisEminenceEugeneCardinalTisserant, deanoftheSacredCollege,whoheadedthe13 CardinalsandmanymembersoftheRomanCuria attendingtheceremony.

Oneofthemostfascinatingincidentsinthe Gospelsistoldinthestoryofthewisemenwho followedthestar"untilitcameandstoodover wheretheChildwas."TheGospelfortheFeastof theEpiphany(Matt.ii,1-12)hasbeenlovingly studiedthroughouttheChristianerabysaintsand sages,poetsandpainters,astronomersandhistorians, and,mostofall,bysimplefolkandchildren.

IntheChristianfolkloreofsomecountries,these wisemenarestyledkings.DuringtheMiddleAges, theywereknownbythenamesofMelchior,Casper andBalthaser,andthistraditionisstillwidespread inEuropeancountries.Somelearnedmenhave concludedthatthewisemenbelongedtoaschoolof astronomersflourishinginPersia,themembersof whichwereknownasmagi.Whilethesedetails areedifyingandinteresting,thetruthisthatwedo notknowagreatdealaboutthewisemenfromthe East,beyondwhatwearetoldintheGospel.

Buttheknowledgeweacquirethereisfullof spiritualsignificanceandprofit.TheGospelgives usapictureofthesemenwhoweresoearnestin seekingChristthatnohardshipcouldbaulktheir quest.FromastudyofthetraditionsoftheEast, and,possibly,also,fromsomeknowledgetheymay havehadoftheprophetsofIsrael,theyhadconcludedthatthetimewasathandforthecoming intothisworldofaDivineChildWhowasthe Saviouroftheworld.Butwemustnotsuppose thattheywereledonbypurelyhumanmotivesand considerations,forGodneverwithholdsHisaidfrom thosewhotrulyseekHim.Godwasdirectingthese wisemen,andpreparingthemtobethefirstamong theGentilestoworshiptheWordIncarnate.Because theyrespondedtothisdirection,theyatlast"found theChild,withMary,HisMother."

Inthatmoment,theyhadaforetasteofheaven. InthelittleChild,cradledinthearmsofMary, theyrecognisedtheirGodandSaviour.Perhaps theythoughttofindagreatkinginabeautiful palace,butwitheyesenlightenedbygrace,theysaw inthesehumblesurroundingstheKingofeternal glory.Theirlongsearchingwasatanend,andtheir heartswerefilledwithajoynotofearth.

Thezeal,sacrifice,perseveranceandfaithofthe wisemenshallbetoldtotheendoftimeforour confounding,butalsoforourencouragement.Jesus waitsforusintheTabernacle,andwaitsinvainfor ourlovingadoration.Moreblessedthanthewise men,wecanreceivetheDivineChildintoourhearts everymorning,butwearetoooccupiedwithtrifles eventothinkofHim.WecanseeJesusinthepoor andtheafflicted,butwearetooself-centredto cometothemwithourlittleboxesofgold,frankincenseandmyrrh.MaytheChildofBethlehem strikethescalesfromoureyes,andgiveusaheart oflove,thatwemayseeHimandministertoHim, inthepoor,thesick,theoutcast.

Glasgow.-Scottishworkershavelaunchedailanti-Communistdriveamongtheir tradeunionleadershipfollowingacondemnationofRedpracticesbytheBishopsofthe Glasgowarea.

Engineers,backedby membersoftheCatholic SocialGuild,metinprivate conferenceinGlasgowto trytoendthereignofCommunistshopstewardswho, fortheirownpoliticalpurposes,hadinvolvedthemin afutileseven-weekstrike.

Thepaintingof"Our LadyoftheShiningHill'is madeonwoodandisvery old.Itissupposedtohave beenpaintedbySt.Luke inthehomeofSt.John,just beforeOurLadydiedand wasassumedintoheaven.

WhenSt.Helenacameto theHolyLandtolookfor theTrueCross,shetookthe picturebackwithher.Her son,Constantine,wasvery fondofthepicture.Hegave itasagreatfavourtoa bravePolishprincewho tookithometohiscountry.

Thepicture,veryfamous, hadseveralhomesthroughoutthecenturies.Onetime itwasbeingmovedfrom oneplacetoanotherina wagon,andthewagon stoppedonahillcalled "ShiningHill,"anditwould notgoanyfurther.

TheyknewthatOurLady wishedherpicturetostay there,andsotheybuilta churchon"ShiningHill" andplaceditthere.

WhentheTartartribes cameintoEurope,they causedmuchsuffering.They hadsomanysoldiersthat noonecouldstandagainstthem.Polandwasrightin theirpath.

TheSeedsforDemocracy programmebeganshortly aftertheendofthewar.

ofmissionschools havereturnedtotheirpar- ents'farmsandprovedto theoldergenerationthe valueofmodernfarming methods.

Thereturnstothefarmer inbetterhealthandgreater financialgainhaveshown himtheworthofthemissionschools'agricultural programme.
