PapersAttributeStoryofPope's VisionToFatherLombardi (By

Rome.-HighlyresponsibleVaticanquartershavedeclinedanycommentonarticles intheItaliansecularpresspurportingtoenlargeupontheconfirmedaccountofthe HolyFather'svisionofChrist,andspeculatingonthesourceofthe"affectionateindiscretion"throughwhichthefactofthe visionbecamepubliclyknown.

"ThereisnootherofficialhadhadavisionofChrist Vaticancommentthana reconfirmationoftheVaticanpressofficestatement issuedafewdaysago,"an officialoftheVaticanSecretariateofStatedeclared.

Thiswasareference'to theVaticanpressofficeannouncementsayingitwas authorisedtoconfirmwhat theillustratedweekly,Oggi, saidaboutthevision.Hence, Oggi'saccountmust,forthe ,timebeing,beconsidered theonlyauthoritativeversionoftheincident.

Atpresentitisimpossible tosayhowfarthesecular pressaccounts,particularly thosegivenbytheMilan daily,theCorriereDella Sera,alsocorrespondtothe truth.

TheCorriereDellaSera saidthatwhenthehiccups hadloweredthestrengthof thePope,andhewasalone inhisroomforafew moments,murmuringwith closedeyestheprayer, "AnimaChristi"(Soulof Christ,sanctifyme),a"true anddistinctvoice"was statedtohaveanswered him:"Magisteradestet vocatte"(TheMasteris hereandcallsyou)."

"God'sMicrophone"

"Then,"thepaperadded, "thepatientwassaidto haveopenedhiseyesand seenthevisionathisbedsideandheardthewords whichannouncedtohim thathishourhadnotyet come."

TheCorriereDellaSera statedthatthisversionof thevisionhadbeentoldby thePontiffto20qualified ecclesiastics.

TheauthoroftheCorriereDellaSeradispatches isawell-knownjournalist whohascoveredtheVaticanfor30years.Without sayingsoflatly,hehints thatFatherRiccardoLombardi,notedItalianJesuit preacher,maybethechannelthroughwhichthenews reachedtheoutsideworld.

cimilarAnotherdispatchalong linesrecallsthat FatherLombardi,whom manycall"God'smicrophone,"manytimesatthe heightofthecrisisinthe Pope'sillnesslastDecembervoicedtheconvicition thattheendofthePontiff's lifehadnotyetcome.

Thisseconddispatch,publishedbytheMilanevening paper,theCorriered'Informazione,assertsthat,par- ticularlyinJesuitcircles, 'thenewsofthePope's visionhasnotcausedtoo muchsurprise.

However, assaidbefore, allsuchdispatcheslackany sortofconfirmation.OsservatoreRomano,Vatican Citynewspaper, hassofar madenomentionwhatever ofthevisionincidentand hasnotevenprintedthe confirmationoftheVatican pressoffice.

Itis,however,notentirelyruledoutthatOsservatoremaysometimeinthe futuregiveitsownaccount. Osservatore'sSundayedition,OsservatoreDella Domenica,merelyprinted anabbreviatedversionof Oggi'saccount.withoutany comment.

Theuniquenatureofthe Pope'svisioninthe2,000yearhistoryofthePapacy meanwhilewasconfirmed byaVaticanhistorian.

Whiletherehavebeena considerablenumberof caseswhere"popularrumours"spokeofvisionsof ChristexperiencedbyvariousPopes-hementioned particularlyInnocentIII (1198-1216)-heisunawareofanycasewhere suchavisionhasbeen"historicallydemonstrated,"the historiansaid.

Tothebestofhisknowledge,thisisthefirsttime anaccountofsuchavision hasbeenauthorisedwhile thePopewasstillalive.

Secularnewspapershave speculatedonthepossibilityofPopePiusbeingcanonisedsoonafterhisdeath. However,thereisnoresponsiblepersoninor aroundtheVaticanwilling toguessonwhatmighthappenafterthepresentPontiff'sdeath,

AsfortheVaticankeeping"voluminousfiles"of lettersascribingmiraculous curestothePope,asreportedbysomenewspapers,it ispointedoutthattheVaticaneachdayreceivesthousandsoflettersfromall partsoftheworld.

Itisquitelikelythat someoftheselettersrelate incidentslinkingspiritual andphysicalbenefitswith thepersonofthepresent Pontiff.

Whetherspecialfilesare keptconcerningthePope's intercessorypowersremains sheerguesswork.
