Partlyitisbecauseweare notasfamiliarwiththeir workaswearewiththat ofthepriestsandSisters. Wehaveatleastweekly contactwithourpriests throughourattendanceat MassonSundays;wesee themfrequentlyonvarious occasions,andcountthem amongourfriends.
Mostofourparishschools, intheelementarygrades, areinchargeoftheSisters, andourchildrenareaconstantreminderofthework oftheSisters.
WhatBrothersDo
Butunlesswearefortunateenoughtolivein areaswheretheBrothers conducthighschoolsorcolleges,orwheretheymaintainhospitals,orlivein parishesconductedbyReligiousorderswherethe Brothersassistthepriestsin theirwork,wemaynever ordinarilymeetaBrother.
Andthatisourloss,for Brothersarewellworth knowing,asisanyonewho hasgenerouslygivenback toGodhislife,tospendin makingGodbetterknown, betterloved,betterserved.
WhatdotheBrothersdo? Theyteach,theynurse, theycook,build,repair, administerinstitutions;they workincitiesandinthe country;athomeandin foreignandmissionlands -infact,onemightalmost say,younameandtheydo it.
TaketheteachingBrothers,forinstance.They conductmanyschools,many ofthemnationallyknown.
Ihappentobeamong thosewhofeelthatolder boysarebesttaughtbymen -eitherBrothersorpriests, preferably.
Myoldestsongoestoa prepschoolconductedby priests;wethinkthatitis goodforhim,andhethinks sotoo.
Teenageboysareexpand-
likecaregivenbythesededicatedBrothers. Thenthere.arethe BrotherswhoworkalongsidepriestsinthesameReligiousOrderinagreat varietyoftasks. ThereisoneIknow,for instance,whoisbusiness managerofanational magazine-aninvaluable maninhisOrderforhis knowledgeoftheworkings ofthepublishingbusiness. Ithewereinthebusiness world,hewouldbeahighly paidexecutiveinsomepublishingfirm. Asitis,heworksfor God,withinhiscommunity, generouslygivingbackto GodthetalentsGodhas giventohim.
Othersserveinvarious capacities.Oneisthe"buyer"foralargepreparatory schoolandchurchconductedbyaReligiousOrder; hetakescareofallthe orderingofsupplies,clothing,food,andallthethings neededforhiscommunity.
Again,ifhewereinthe secularbusinessworld,he wouldbeaveryvaluable purchasingagentforsome firm,drawingahighslary. Buthetoogivesbackto GodwhatHehasbestowed uponhim;andthrough carefulpurchases,and
Brotherswhowithno moneyandafewordinary toolsbuildchurchesand schoolsandrectories.Often youhearofonewhois knowninhisorderas "BrotherBuilder"-hehas erectedsomanychurches inmissionlands.Perhaps incivilianlifehemight havebeenabuilder,too, constructinghundredsof housesinthegreathousing developmentsthathave sprungupalloverthe Commonwealth.Buthetoo ismoreinterestedinGod's eternitythaninourcivilian economy;hetakeshimself inhishandsandoffersthat toGod,saying"ThyWill bedone."
Butonethingallthe Brothershaveincommon. Theypray;theirverywork issanctifiedprayer,and theyprayinchapel,incommunity,intheclassrooms, andineverythingtheydo. Theyprayfortheirfellows intheirorderorcongregation,fortheirrelativesand friends,fortheChurchandforallofus,evenfor youandforme.Fortheir livesareprayers,offeredto Godforalleternity.

PointingoutthatCatholicsnumberonlyaboutone percent.ofthenation's30 millionlargelyMoslem population,hedescribedthe initialreturnas"verysatis- factory."
HesaidtheCatholicParty isexpectedtoget700,000 or800,000votes,morethan halfofthemintheislands ofTimorandFlores.
Mr.Kasimosaidthedelayinobtainingfinalfigures ontheelectionsisduetothe factthatvotesmustbe tabulatedinthousandsof islandsonmanyofwhich therearenomeansoftransportation.Atthemoment, hestated,theonlyfinalreturnsarethoseforthecapi- taldistrictofDjakarta.
Thegeneralpicture,however,isclear,Mr.Kasimo explained.Hesaidmany politicalpartieshavedisappeared,butfourbig partiesremain.
Theseare:theMasjumi,themodernMoslemgroup, whosecandidateshaveso farreceived7,750,000votes: theNandatulAlama,or clericalMoslemgroup,with 6,000,000votesforitscandidatesuptonow;the NationalistParty,with 8,000,000votes,andthe CommunistParty,with 5,500,000votes.
Mr.Kasimopredictedthat withtheMoslempartiesand theNationalistandCommunistPartiesholdingeach otherinbalance,theremainingsmallerparties,includingtheCatholicParty, theSocialistPartyandthe ChristianParty(aProtestantgroup)willexerta strongerinfluenceonthe government.

ThisweektheRev.MotheratSt.Joseph'sGirls'OrphanagereceivedaletterfromWales.Itwaswrittenbyanelderlylady namedDaisyGriffiths.Thenamemeansnothingtoanyonehere andthetownwithafunnynameandtoomanylettersinitsspellingisalongwayoff.YetthereisalinkbetweenMrs.Griffiths inherdistantWelshcottageandSt.Joseph's,forshewritesofher childhood.
"MyparentswereGeorge andJuliaGreenwood.They weremarriedatBathurst, N.S.W.,in1893,butmy motherdiedwhenIwas veryyoung.Myeldersister Amydiedwhenshewasa baby.
