Whateverthereason,this isadocumentarywhichis notlikelytobebettered. ButitisnottheCatholicHierarchyofthecountry whichwillpassjudgmentonEvatt-typeLabour. Butonethingallthe Brothershaveincommon. Theypray;theirverywork issanctifiedprayer,and theyprayinchapel,incommunity,intheclassrooms, andineverythingtheydo. Djakarta.-Stillincompletereturnsinthe September29electionsindicatethatIndonesia'sCatholicPartywilloccupy10or11of the260seatsinthenewparliament.The partyhadpreviouslyheldnineseats.

ThiswastheopinionexpressedbyIgnaceJ. Kasimo,MinisterofEconomicAffairsoftheIndonesianRepublicandleader oftheCatholicParty,inan interviewwiththiscorrespondent.

PointingoutthatCatholicsnumberonlyaboutone percent.ofthenation's30 millionlargelyMoslem population,hedescribedthe initialreturnas"verysatis- factory."

HesaidtheCatholicParty isexpectedtoget700,000 or800,000votes,morethan halfofthemintheislands ofTimorandFlores.

Mr.Kasimosaidthedelayinobtainingfinalfigures ontheelectionsisduetothe factthatvotesmustbe tabulatedinthousandsof islandsonmanyofwhich therearenomeansoftransportation.Atthemoment, hestated,theonlyfinalreturnsarethoseforthecapi- taldistrictofDjakarta.

Theseare:theMasjumi,themodernMoslemgroup, whosecandidateshaveso farreceived7,750,000votes: theNandatulAlama,or clericalMoslemgroup,with 6,000,000votesforitscandidatesuptonow;the NationalistParty,with 8,000,000votes,andthe CommunistParty,with 5,500,000votes.

Mr.Kasimopredictedthat withtheMoslempartiesand theNationalistandCommunistPartiesholdingeach otherinbalance,theremainingsmallerparties,includingtheCatholicParty, theSocialistPartyandthe ChristianParty(aProtestantgroup)willexerta strongerinfluenceonthe government.

Thatiswhatwasbehind theU.N.decisiontocallfor theinternationalisationof Jerusalem.InternationalisationmeansthattheHoly Cityitself,anditsenvirons wheretheHolyPlacesare located,wouldbenotunder thedominationofanyone nation,butwouldbeunder theprotectionandadministrationoftheUnited Nations.

TheVaticanhassaid fromthefirstthatthis courseofactionistheonly onethatoffersanyhopeof lastingpeaceintheHoly Land.

But,aftertheU.N.GeneralAssemblyhadadopted thiscoursetheU.S.Governmentsaiditwouldback theaction.

Despitethispromiseof support,therehavebeen timeswhenconcernwas feltovertheattitudeofthe U.S.InhisreporttoCongressin1950,President Trumansaidthefailureof theU.N.toeffecttheinternationalisationofJerusalem uptothattimereflectedan understandingthatanysuch regimemusthavethesupportofIsraelandJordan.

ButPresidentTruman himselforderedAmerican troopsintoKoreatouphold aUnitedNationsstand whichsomenationsinthe areainvolved,likeNorth KoreaandRussia,didnot support.

Then,too,protestswere madetoPresidentEisenhowerwhenU.S.AmbassadorLawsonpresentedhis credentialstothePresident ofIsraelintheNewCityof Jerusalem,whichIsraelunlawfullyclaimedasitscapi- tal. "MyparentswereGeorge andJuliaGreenwood.They weremarriedatBathurst, N.S.W.,in1893,butmy motherdiedwhenIwas veryyoung.Myeldersister Amydiedwhenshewasa baby.

Justaslonelybewildered DaisyGreenwoodcameto beadmittedin1903tothe shelterofSt.Joseph's,so bereavedandunhappychildrenhadbeencomingfor 36yearsbeforeherandso theyhavebeencomingin allthehalf-centurythathas elapsedsince1903.

Veryfewavenuesofemploymentwereopentothe lowlyandunderprivileged.

Manythingshavechangedwiththeyears.Now girlsarestillatschoolon their16thbirthday-longeriftheyintendtopursue higherstudies.Theybegin workasclerks,tradeapprentices,traineenurses, dressmakersorfactory workers.
