Some250parishionerswitnessedthebles HisGracetheArchbishoponNov.13ofa lageePark,largelyerectedbyvolunteer(a Situatedatthecornerofacquiretheirownproperty andreartheirfamiliesin happy,peacefulandprosperouscircumstances.Many ofthemwerelivinginWillageePark.

Itcomprisesthreeclassrooms(27ft.x25ft.),sacristy,ablutionblockand 10ft.verandah.

DedicatedtoOurLadyof PeaceitistheonlyecclesiasticalbuildingintheState underthisMariantutelage soappropriatetothisageof crisis. WithHisGraceonthe platformweretheparish priest(theRev.P.Farrelly),theRev.G.O'Callaghan,Mr.W.R.Brown (chairman,MelvilleRoad Board),Mr.E.M.Davies, M.L.C., Mr. Laurence, M.L.A.,Cr.W.Hughes (Fremantle)andMr.D. O'Keefe(chairman,parish committee).

FatherFarrellyintroducedtheArchbishopand FatherO'Callaghanmade theappeal.

£3,000Saved

HisGracetheArchbishop congratulatedFatherFarrellyandallassociatedwith himinthebuildingproject. Hethankedthetradesmen whogavetheirserviceson week-endswithoutremuneration.

Morethan£3,000had beensavedasaresultof thevoluntarylabour.Father Farrellydeservedgreat credit.

Thebuildingwouldserve thedualpurposeofchurch randschool.HehopedFather Farrellywouldbeableto getastaffofteachers.

Duringlastweek,His Gracecontinued,themillionthNewAustralianhad arrived.Australiawasthe richerfortheiradvent.

AndtheNewAustralians werethericherfortheopportunitytocarvetheir futureinthisfreedom-lovinglandwheretheywould

Theywould,hefeltconfident,dotheirdutytowardsAustraliabytheir loyaltytothelawsandcustomsofthecountry,andby implantingtherichspiritualandculturaltraditions oftheirnativelandinthis landoftheiradoption.

Somehadcomefrom countriesunderthedominationofruthlessoppressors.Theyhadseenreligiousinstitutionsconfiscatedanddestroyedinthe vauntednameoflibertyand freedom.

Theyshouldshow appreciationoftheir fortuneinescaping

singandopeningby school-churchatWilbour. thatawe-inspiringatmos-boys'choir. pherebymakingevery sacrificetohelpbuildup thesymbolsofChristianity suchasthebuildingthat wasbeingblessedthatafternoon.

Thustheywouldbecompensatingforthewanton, destructionintheirown countries.Theywouldbe makingapracticalactof faithinChristianity;forit' wastheirconvictionthatit wasonthefoundationsof Christianityandnotonthe foundationsofchaosand tyranny,thattruepeace and concordbetween nationswouldbeachieved.

HeappealedtotheNew Australianslivinginthe parishtodotheirpartin contributingtowardsthe costofthebuilding.

Theauthorisdirectorof theHiroshimaCommunicationsHospital,andheoccupiedthatpositiononAugust 6,1945,thedayonwhich anAmericanB29flewover thecityanddroppedan atombomb.

Toreadthediaryofany intelligentpersonwhowent throughthatworld-shatteringexperiencwouldbeof intenseinterest,butDr. Hachiyaismorethananintelligentperson;onegathers fromhisdiarythatheis alsoamanimbuedwitha deeploveofhisfellows.

Andthewayinwhichhe struggledon,directingthe activitiesofthehospital throughthehellthatfollowedtheatomicexplosion,revealsamanofgreat courage,forDr.Hachiya doesnotattempttodisguise hisownpanic.

Naturallyenough,his storyisaterribleone.The scenesofhorrorhewitnessed,andthatothersdescribedtohim,remindone ofnothinglessthanDante's "Inferno."

But,woventhroughthe fabricofghastlysuffering,wehavethethreadof humankindness,andofthe sufferers'concernforothers.

ThisisabookthatIfeel everyoneshouldreadfor veryobviousreasons.Itis apleasuretobeabletosay that,despiteitstopic,itis abookyouwillreadwithouteffort.

Itisaman'sbookrather thanalady's;itiscruel, sometimesalittlecrudethepointisthatitisatrue accountofwarinitsmost brutalformwithboth hunterandhuntedconcernedverylittlewiththe nicetiesofhumanbehaviour.

Itcomparesinmanyways withthatamazingepicof humanendurance,"WeDie Alone,"fortheprivations andbrutalityPapesuffered wouldpassbeliefifwedid nothavetheevidenceof otherstoitstruth.

Theothersuperstitiousextremewhicharisesfrom theintroductionoffalseandsuperfluouselements intothepracticeoftruereligionisalsowithus,and. lamentablyenough,amongcertainCatholics.They areonlypreservedfromgravemoralculpabilityby thesheerlackofknowledgewhichpromptsthem. Weretheytoremember anything-andthankGod theydon't-itwouldhave beenhow,eveningafter evening,allshinedupfor dinner,theywatchedand waitedfordaddytoturnin thedrive.Bythetime daddydidturninthedrive, theywerelongsinceinbed.

Theyneverknewthe nightsdaddydidn'tshowup atall.Theyneverknew thewonderfulfamilyunity sharedbysomanylucky onesand,neverknowingit, theynevermissedit.

So,Ipleadedwithhim, beggedhimtogiveuphis legalrightofvisitation.I thoughtoftheyearsahead whenthechildrenwouldbe shippedofffortheirannual vacationwithdaddyandhis wile.

IamtoldhereinJordan ofcasesinwhichArab farmershavebeenableto gazeacrossthefrontierat theirformerlandsandsee themtilledLyIsraelinewcomers.Thesenseoffrustrationandwhitehatredcan easilybeimagined.

Isthereanyprospectat allofadecreaseofthetensionbetweenbetweenIsrael andtheArabcountries? Certainlythereisnoreal optimismonthissideofthe fence. TheArabsgrantthatif thefrontiersofIsraelwere pushedbacktothosedrawn in1947underUnited Nationsauspices;ifcompensationweregivenforall propertylossessufferedby PalestinianArabsand, finally,ifthosewhowanted toreturnwerefreetodoso, theremightbeabasisfor somesortofagreement.

PerhapsInsoluble

Thedifficultyisnotso easytosolve.AllArabs arenotidenticalandthe levelofeducationandwhatnotvarieswidely.APalestinianChristianofArabic raceandspeechisbyno meansthesameasapeasant oftheYemenoranAlgerian farmer.

HereinJordanareothers insuchgreatnumbersthat everyotherpersonone meetsseemstohavebeen borninPalestine.
