Thegeneralsecretary (Mr.M.Foley)reported thatitwasanticipatedthat FatherFitzmauricewould arriveinPerthinthesecond ,weekinApril,andwould spendfiveorsixweeksin theState.Planshadbeen madeforvisitstoNew NorciaandtheBunbury dioceseduringthattime.

Itwasagreedthatit wouldbeimpossiblefor FatherFitzmauricetovisit eachofthemetropolitan branchesanditwasproposedthatheshouldattend meetingsatstrategiccentres whichwouldbeconvenient forneighbouringbranches' memberstoattend.

Recentgainsinmembershipandinfervourinthe 'ranksoftheCathedral branchoftheHolyName Societywerereflectedon theoccasionoftheannual Communionandbreakfast onSundaylast.

ThespecialMasswas celebratedbythebranch's spiritualdirector(theRev. T.Phelan)andtheserversweretwoseniormembersof thesocietywhoworewhite sashesbearingtheinsignia ofthesociety.

Mr.Foleyappealedfor thesupportofbranches,explainingthattheformation oftheBunburyDiocesanUnionhadmeanttheloss ofanappreciableproportion ofthemembershipofthe PerthUnion. Valuedbranchesinthe southernportionofthe Statewerenowmaking theircontributiontothe foundationofthenew union.However,thePerth DiocesanUnionhadcertain commitmentsandthese couldbemetbytherenewedinterestofmembers.

HespokeoftheimportanceoftheBursaryFund forSt.Charles'seminary andappealedforsupport whichwouldcompensate forthelossofsomany branches.

Boththefishandchipson theFridaynightandbarbecuesteaksontheSaturday wereverypopularandthe cook,attiredinpersil-white apronandcap,waskept busyonbothdays.

V.Rev.P.Nolan,O.S.M., sincerelythankedallthose whohadworkedtomake thefeteasuccess,together withthosepeoplewhohad supportedthefunctionby theirattendance. Togetherwiththemoney raisedbyfunctionsheld previoustothefete,itwas hopedthatapproximately L1,000wouldberaisedtowardsthenewschoolwhich shouldbereadyforthe childreninthenewyear.

The'satisfactorysolutionofanyproblem,but especiallyofagravemoralproblem,isthediscovery ofcausesratherthaneffects.Vainisthetreatment ofafruitofadiseasedtreeiftheparasiteisatthe roots.Regardingthisspecificproblem,thesource ofweaknessappearsfirstinthehomelife.Inour daythefamilyhasbeenlargelydisintegrated.There isawidespreadphilosophywhichencouragesparents toshirktheirresponsibilitiesinfavourofanalleged "freedom."Andanotheraspectofthesame degeneratephilosophyaccountsforthephenomenal numberofyoungboysandgirlstobeseennightly onthestreets.Thesecond,andperhapseven weightiercause,isseculareducation,whichcompletelyomitstheinculcationofvirtuefromsupernaturalmotives.Achildwhospendshisplastic yearsinasecularschoolis,moreover,untrainedin self-denial,bathbecausethesecularsystemdoes nothingfortheeducationofthewillandbecause theirideasofeducationallowthechildaridiculous amountoflatitudewhichisfataltohabitsofselfcontrol.
