Whentherainsabated, BishopO'Loghlen,Father CopasandBrothersWelch andFitzgerald,intwo vehicleswithfourwheel drive,blazedthetrailtothe river.
Thepositionsofthevariousbuildingswerepegged outonthesiteandthetwo Brothersremainedtotake deliveryofthebuildingsas thetruckscamethrough.
Inthemeantime,theyset uptemporaryquartersina dilapidatedbarnpreviously usedtostorepeanutcrops.

Besidesthe300yardsstrip tobeoccupiedbythebuildings,thereisfurtherspace fora3,000yardsall-weather aerodromeandsomeacres forwetseasoncultivation.
ARERISING otherbuildings-willhave tobelookedforfromgenerousdonors,inadditionto liberalhelpreceivedfrom thePropagationofthe Faith.
Thewholescenewasa hiveofactivity;thecarpenters,plumbersandplastererswerevyingwitheach othertokeepuptoschedule andavoiddelayingoneanother.Thosecartingsand andgravelweremaking suretokeepaheadalso.
Theminimumoftrees hadbeenfelled-onlythose absolutelynecessaryto placethebuildingsinposition.

Withonlyafewminutes tospare,wesataroundthe mission'snewTraegertransceiver.FatherLearyfingeredthedialswaitingfor hiscallsign,9ML,tocome throughand,meanwhile,we chattedaboutthetripout fromDarwin.
Thepolicestation,transferredtoitspresentsitein 1935fromtenmilesfurther downtheriver,standsina picturesquesetting.Inits enchantinggardenIcountedmorethan50frangipani trees,allinfullblossomwhite,creamendpink.
Theywerescattered amongtamarinds,poincianas,bougainvilleas,gardinears,abnyanandmango trees,tomentionbutafew thatcaughtmyeye.Another impressivedisplaywasa quisqualiscreeperheavily ladenwithrichlyperfumed bloomscompletelycovering awindmillstandtoa heightofover30feet.
Inthevegetablepatch, besidesavarietyofthemore usualvegetables,Inoticed asmallcropofsorghumand saccalinegrownforthe goatsandthefowls,agood patchofparagrasscultivatedtoprovideseedfor pasturisationandahealthy clumpofthehighlyflavouredlemongrass.Youhave onlytocrushtheleafto liberateitspowerfulflavour.
Amongtheotherinterestingfeatures,mostfascinat-
ingformewasthecorner ofthegardenthatshelters thetwobowerbirdplaygrounds.Ihadanopportunitytocomebackanother morningandsitwithabook toenjoytheperiodicalentertainmentprovidedinthis sanctuary.
Thebirdswereofthe spottedvarietyandthere wereseveralpairsofthem usingthestageinturn.The malebirdhasapurplecrest whichhedisplaystoperfectionwhileperforminghis actofsonganddance. Wethenstrolledoutthe frontgateandalongthe riverbankandMr.andMrs. Learpointedouttousmany ofthenativefoods,wild passionfruit(tucktuckna) thatcreepsoverbushesand clingstothetrunksoftrees; thesmallfig(mikaka),cape gooseberry (mirrachin), nativecucumber(mundapin),wildplumsandwild apples. AfterMassnextmorning offeredintheimprovised chapelprovidedbythe presbyteryoffice,wedrove twomilesuptheriverto visitthepolicestation, placedstrategicallyonthe bankoftheriveratapoint knownasTheCrossing,over whichalltraffictothesouth sidehastopass-underthe eagleeyeofConstableLear.
TheCrossing,covered, whenweviewedit,bya footorsoofwater,isabout 70yardsfromsidetoside,
andhasanapproachonthe northsideformedbyalarge sandbarofclearcrispsand, makingitperhapsthemost beautifulspotonthewhole lengthoftheriver.
Thoughabout80miles fromthemouth,thereisa tidalfluctuationofsome feetimmediatelybelowthe edgeoftheCrossing.The tidalbore,however,that occurslowerdowntheriver, presentingaserioushazard tosmallcraft,neverreaches ashighasthis.
Mrs.Learunderstands thesenativesverywelland hasagenuineloveforthem. Shecertainlydoesagreat jobontheirbehalf.She conductsaminiatureclinic
anddispensaryonthese daysandanyofthemwho arereallysicksheallows tostaywithherforregular attention,althoughherresponsibilityendswiththe handingoutofsupplies.
