OnOct.26,attheBenedictineabbey, NewNorcia,theRev.AloysiusTubau, O.S.B.,reachedthe50thanniversaryofhis religiousprofessionasaBenedictinemonk, 46ofwhichhehasspentinthisState.

Hismonasticbrethren joinedhiminafittingcelebrationoftheoccasion.

Duringtheconventional MasscelebratedbytheV. Rev.G.Gomez,O.S.B., PrioroftheAbbey,andin thepresenceofthecommunity,FatherTubaurenewedhismonasticvows. TheTeDeumwasthen chanted.

Intheafternoon,the communitygatheredinthe abbeyhallforacoffeeparty inhonourofthegolden jubilarian. FatherTubauwasborn inSpainin1885,andmade hisprofessioninGenoa (Italy)in1905.

AtSt.Anselm'sCollege, Rome.hecontinuedhis theologicalstudies.

In1909hewasordained apriestinRome,andwas calledtohisAbbeyatNew

NorciabythelateBishop Torres.

Inallhis46yearsin Australia,FatherTubauhas hadonlyabriefsojourn outsidethemonastery,at parishworkatMoora, SouthernCrossandFremantle,andhasneverbeen backtohishome-country. Formanyyearshehas beencalledupontodoprofessorialwork,andforsome timehewasprefectof studentsandoneofthe deansofthemonastery.-"Pax."

Asthisistheendofanothermonth,anditistime torecapitulatethetitlesof booksIhavereviewedduringthepastfourweeks,I havebeenalittlelessloquaciousthanusual.

Briefly,thestoryisabout a"boffin"whoiscalledin tohelpsolvetheriddleof amid-summerfallofsnow, whichisgraduallyfreezingthelifeoutofthewhole oftheBritishIsles.

Tomakemattersworse, itisdiscoveredthatthe snowisradio-active,and therealisationfinallydawns ontheBritishGovernment thatanenemypowerhas inventedanewmeansof wagingwarwithoutrevealingitshand.

Thestrugglesofthe scientisttoinventanddeployacountertothisinsidiousandsilentweaponof destructionmakesamost excitingandtensestory.

Arecordnumberof58girls fromallStatesattended.

TheArchbishopofMelbourne,theMostRev.D. Mannix,visitedtheconferenceandspoketothegirls.

TheArchbishopsaidhis referencetoonematter waspromptedbyarecent utteranceofthePope.

OnthatoccasionthePope was speakingparticularlyaboutsomethingthe Archbishophadoften thoughtaboutandsometimesspokenabout,and thatwasbeautycontests.

ThePopecameoutwith astrongcondemnationof thosecontests,andno wonder-theytendedtodebasegirlswhotookpartin htmeandwereagrossdisservicetothecommunityin general.

Everybodyadmired beauty;thosewhohadn'tit weresorryaboutthatand thosewhohaditwerethe envyofeverybodyelse.

Butitwasnotthe"one thingnecessary."Itwas goodinitselfbutitshould notbeusedtoinjurethe modestyofgirlsanddoa greatdisservicetothecommunity-includingthemale community.

ArchbishopMannixreferredtotheValiantWoman oftheScriptures(Proverb 31)whowasnotedforher greatqualitiesofcommonsense,industryanddevotion toherhusbandandchildren, butwhosebeautywasnever mentioned-possiblyshe wasquiteplain.

Whentherainsabated, BishopO'Loghlen,Father CopasandBrothersWelch andFitzgerald,intwo vehicleswithfourwheel drive,blazedthetrailtothe river.

Thepositionsofthevariousbuildingswerepegged outonthesiteandthetwo Brothersremainedtotake deliveryofthebuildingsas thetruckscamethrough.

Inthemeantime,theyset uptemporaryquartersina dilapidatedbarnpreviously usedtostorepeanutcrops.

Twooftheselaymen,with anothersoontoarrive,have offeredtheirserviceswithoutrequestofremuneration,astheirpersonalcontributiontothisimportant missionaryeffort.

AsIapproachedthemissionsite,Iwasamazedto seetheprogressmadeina fewmonths,forIcounted nolessthan11buildingsin progressofconstruction.

Asyoudriveintothe block,firstthingtocatch theeyeisthegarden,where pineapples,pawpaws,bananas,tomatoesandmelons arealreadyunderway.

Thenpassingtheoldbarn youmeet,invaryingstages ofcompletion,thegarage andengineroom,thestore andcanteen,boys'dormi-tory,presbytery,churchsite, school,convent,community diningroomandkitchen, girls'dormitory,laundry blockandfinallythehospital.

Moneywillbeforthcomingfromthegovernmentgranttoassistinthe erectionofallthesebuildings,withtheexceptionof thechapel.

Besidesthe300yardsstrip tobeoccupiedbythebuildings,thereisfurtherspace fora3,000yardsall-weather aerodromeandsomeacres forwetseasoncultivation.

ARERISING otherbuildings-willhave tobelookedforfromgenerousdonors,inadditionto liberalhelpreceivedfrom thePropagationofthe Faith.

Thewholescenewasa hiveofactivity;thecarpenters,plumbersandplastererswerevyingwitheach othertokeepuptoschedule andavoiddelayingoneanother.Thosecartingsand andgravelweremaking suretokeepaheadalso.

Theminimumoftrees hadbeenfelled-onlythose absolutelynecessaryto placethebuildingsinposition.

WhenatruckthatIhad passedonthewayashort timebeforepulledin,all handsdownedtoolsandset aboutunloadingtospeedup theturnaround.

Cementandotherperishablematerialswerestacked underroofsalreadyraised toguardagainstearly stormsthatmightspringup anydaynow.

Withonlyafewminutes tospare,wesataroundthe mission'snewTraegertransceiver.FatherLearyfingeredthedialswaitingfor hiscallsign,9ML,tocome throughand,meanwhile,we chattedaboutthetripout fromDarwin.

GARDENOFENCHANTMENT

Thepolicestation,transferredtoitspresentsitein 1935fromtenmilesfurther downtheriver,standsina picturesquesetting.Inits enchantinggardenIcountedmorethan50frangipani trees,allinfullblossomwhite,creamendpink.

Theywerescattered amongtamarinds,poincianas,bougainvilleas,gardinears,abnyanandmango trees,tomentionbutafew thatcaughtmyeye.Another impressivedisplaywasa quisqualiscreeperheavily ladenwithrichlyperfumed bloomscompletelycovering awindmillstandtoa heightofover30feet.
