Q.:Whatexactlyarethe officialteachingsofthe Churchregardingthe politicalstructureofthe State?

R.:TheCatholicChurch teachesthatthegoodof societydemandslawand order;andforthat,astable politicalregime.

Shecondemnstheextremesofabsoluteindividualism,whichmeansanarchy;andabsolutedespotism,whichmeanstotalitarianismandtheabolitionof legitimatepersonalliberties.

Betweenthoseextremes, theChurchdoesnotteach thatoneformofgovernmentisnecessarilybetter thananyotherform.

Anycountrymaydecide foritselfwhateverformof governmentitthinksbest suitedtoitsneeds,whether monarchyorrepublic;ora mixtureofthetwo,with varyingdegreesofdemocraticcontrol.
