Meanwhile,astheeditor willhaveallowedformy usualloquacity,I'lltake thisopportunityofmaking apersonalexplanation.

Iwasalittlesurpriseda fewweeksagotohear1 criticismofoneofmy recommendationsonthe scoreofitssuitabilityfor Catholicreaders.Soasto cleartheair,thebookin questionwasDaphnedu Maurier's"MaryAnne," whichIreceivedsome monthsago.Thesubject wasaladyo:relatively easy,butexpensive,virtue inthedaysoftheRegency.

Althoughthelady'smoral lifewascertainlyreproachable,therewasnotasingle passageinthebookthat would,inmyopinion,offend thevastmajorityofgood peoplewhomightreadit.

Theaffectionthatgrew betweenthepsychologist andhisconvictassistantsis movinglydrawn.

Dr.Wilsonwriteswiththe easeofabornnovelist,and hisexperienceswouldprovidetheplotofadozen goodstories.

Thereis,ofcourse,a crudesidetoprisonlife, butthewriterskatesgently pastthiswithoutgiving offence.Heisfrankbut neversalacious,andhis selectionofaspectsofprison lifeiscarefullychosento giveabalancedpictureof thesocialeffectsofthe penitentiarysystem.

Ontheotherhand,the numberofbooksIhaverejectedisextremelyhigh,as thebooksellerswhosupply mewillverify,andmy reasonsfornotincluding theminthiscolumnhave sometimessurprisedthem.

Theyvaryfromthesimplefactthatthebook didnotholdmyinterestto arecentcaseofabook which,despiteitssuperb plotandwriting,Irejected becauseIfeltitwastoo cruelandpitilessinitsexposureoftheweaknessofa classofpeoplewhohavein recentyearscometolive amongus.

Thisis,unfortunately,a paganage,andveryfew booksarewrittenfroma Catholicpointofviewor withaCatholicdelicacy.If oneisgoingtodoanyreadingatall,thesupplycf bookswithaChristian moraltonewillsoonbeexhausted.

Mychoiceismadeonly aftercarefulthought,and myrecommendationalways carriesawarningofanythingthatmightoffendthe mindsoftheyoungorthe scrupulous.

If,afterfollowingmyadvice,anyoneshouldLe scandalised,Ishouldsuspect thatmyconsciencewasbeginningtobecomecasehardened.

Thoughhistopicisa seriousone,andhenever attemptstoplayitdown, thewriter'shumourand humanitymakethisbook oneofthemostentertainingandcolourfulaccounts ofamodernsocialproblem thatIhaveread.

Veryfewpeoplecouldbe speakingfromawider knowledgeoftheideasof thepresentday.

ItisnotthatBishopSheen considersthatthephilosophyofAquinasdoesnot meetthesituation;onthe contraryhedirectshis readerstotheSummafor theanswertotheirproblem, andhefindsanapposite quotationfromtheAngelic Doctorforeverydifficulty.

Ifeelthathereinthis bookIhavefoundthereal FultonSheen,andmyadmirationforthegreat crusaderishigherthanit everwassincethefirsttime IheardhisspeechonCominunismattheMelbourne Showgrounds.

Thewayinwhichthe relevantquotationfromthe writingsofphilosophers andsociologistsofthepast threecenturiesiswoven intothefabricofBishop Sheen'sownexpositionis fantastic.

Itcanonlybeexplained byaknowledgeofhissubjectwhichfewtheologians ofthepresentdaycould better.Thisisabookfor theminority,for,although itisconciseandclear,itis stillaheavysubject.Atthe sametime,itwouldbeuselesstotrytoreadthisbook unlessyouownedityourself,becausetheperson fromwhomyouborrowed itwouldgrowtiredof waitingforitsreturn.

Fortheuniversitystudent orforthepersonwhohas somebackgroundorinterest inphilosophyitisa"must."

Theintolerabletensionsandstrainswhichthe BritishandDominions'presshavebroughttobear, notonlyuponthePrincess,butupontheQueen havebeenmetwiththemostperfectkindofsnubsilence.Buttheyarenonethelesspersonallypainful totheRoyalFamily,damagingtoBritishprestige, subversiveoftherespectduetocivilauthorityand harmfultothecausesofpublicmoralityandreligion. Themaudlindisplayofsentimentalismispar- ticularlyinimicaltoteenagerswhoarebeingcon- stantly"conditioned"bytheorgansofpublic opinionandentertainmentforjustsuch"romantic" notions,irrespectiveofthemoralprinciplesinvolved. Itwouldbebadenoughinallconscienceifthe Princessfollowedtheunhappypathofheruncle. Butthepreliminarysoftening-upprocessinthe Presscandonothingbutworsenasituationwhich callsfordelicacy,reticenceandstrengthofmind.

Justhowhypocriticalandamoralthebleatings ofthenewsmenmaybecanbeinferredfromthe reactionofoneBritishnewspaper-aLeftWing journal,salvereverentia!-tothereportthatthe DuchessofWindsoriswritingabookwhichwill makedisclosuresabouttheRoyalFamily.One wonderswhethertheDuchess(ifsheismotivated byspiteas"ThePeople"alleges)coulddomore harmtothecauseofRoyaltythanhasalreadybeen donebyalarge,irresponsiblesectionofthePress. ItcertainlymakesironicalreadingforascandalmongeringPresstobeaccusingtheDukeand DuchessofWindsorofwritingwithaneyeonthe cashregister!Onewouldimaginethatthelargecirculationnewspaperswerepublishedfromsheer Itgrowsevengrimmertoreadthatitwas theDuchess'"miserableloveaffairwhichcostour Kinghisthrone."

WhattheBritishPressneedstoworryabout, shouldconscientiousmotiveseverbeconsulted,is thattheydonotpromoteanothermiserablelove affairwhichmaycosttheBritishpeoplestheinstitutionofroyaltyitself.Afterall,foryearsthey haveaidedandabettedthetopplingofthronesin Europeinfavourofthesettingupofrepublican, "democratic"regimeswhichwereforeigntonations' needsandtraditionsandintheirinstabilitybecame, inmanyinstances,facilesatellitesoftheCommunist imperialsystem.Nowthattheyaretinkeringwith theideaofpopularrespectwhichbuttressesthe authorityoftheBritishCrown,theymayverywell havetakenthefirststepstowardsbringingitcrashingdown.Fornopoliticalinstitutionisstronger thanthemoralauthorityitisabletocommand.
