Iftheirchurchwith accommodationfor200 peoplehadbeenovercrowdedwithworshippers, theyshouldbegratefulfor thespadeworkdoneinthe schoolsbythenuns.

Hehadtakentheview thatthosewhohadgone beforehadbuiltsoundly andwellandthattheir

WithoutthemtheChurch inAustraliawouldnothold itsplaceforverylong.Fine work,too,hadbeendone bytheMaristBrothers.It wasgratifying,therefore, thatextensionstotheNorthamchurchhadbeenprovided.

Hebelievedtheright coursehadbeenfollowed. Iftheyhaddecidedtobuild anewchurchtoaccommodate500peopleitwould havecost£35,000.

Thatwouldhavemeant thattheywouldnothave hadtheirnewclassrooms.

TheV.Rev.P.Talty, C.Ss.R.,appealedtothose presenttodonategenerouslytowardthebuildingfund fortheNorthamchurchand school.

"Thisisthebestbuilding inNortham,"hesaid."Itis grandenoughforaCathedral.Iwouldliketoseea newdioceseherewithMonsignorthebishop."

FatherTaltysaidthat thepeoplewerenotbeing toldwhatwashappeningin China,wheretheCatholic missionswerebeingtaken over.

Therewascriticismbyseveralspeakersofwhatwasdescribed asagreatinjusticetoCatholicsinthefailureoftheGovernment toprovidefinanceforCatholicschools,atafunctionattendedby severalhundredpeopleatNorthamrecently,whenadditionsand renovationstoSt.Joseph'sChurchandtwonewclassroomsatthe adjoiningconventschoolwereblessedandofficiallyopenedbyHis GracetheArchbishop WelcomingtheArchbishop,whom,hesaid,they sawalltooinfrequentlyin Northam,MonsignorLenihansaidthatitwasHis Grace'sjudgmentthathad beenmainlyresponsiblefor thebuildingsthathewas beingaskedofficiallyto openthatafternoon. Heconfessedpubliclyt3 beingwronginopposing theideaofrenovationsand additions.Withothershe hadfavouredthebuilding ofanewchurch,butthe Archbishophadbeenright.

ThenunsandBrothers hadbeenputoutoftheir schoolsandthesamerooms werebeingusedtoindoctrinateCommunism.

Thenunsincompounds nearbywerelisteningto *whatwasgoingon;they listenedtotheCommunists denyingChristianityand drummingfalsedoctrine intotheearsoflittlechildren.

Thiswasgoingan throughouttheentirecountry.Whathappenedin Russiawasnowhappening inChina.Thepatternwas thesametheworldover.

Healsoextendedawarm welcometotheMayorof Northam(Mr.R.B.James).

Theextensionstothe churchhadcost£20,500 andtheyhadspent£7,000 ontheschool,theArchbishopsaid.HecongratulatedMonsignorLenihanon hisleadershipandfeltsure thepeoplewouldcontinue tosupporthim. Futuregenerationswould havefurtherreasontohold inbenedictionthemembers ofthepresentgeneration.Thequestionwouldbeasked,whyspendallthis moneywhenitcouldbe moreprofitablyappliedin helpingthepoor,theaged andtheorphans?

LookingForAid

Thesamequestionhad beenaskedinPerthregardingthebuildingofachurch byanotherdenomination. Thequestionwasnotnew; ithadbeenaskedfor2,000 years.,Inreply,hewouldsimply saythatpeoplewhowers preparedtobuildsucha churchastheirswouldnot beunmindfuloftheirobligationstothepoorortothe old,ortheorphans.

Thatbuildingwasanacquisitiontothetownand thepresenceofthePremier, whowasthememberfor Northam,andtheMayor showedthattheyrecognised thefact.

TheArchbishopsaidthat hewasdelightedtohavethe opportunityofexpressing hiscongratulationsonthe wonderfulextensionstothe churchandontheacquisitionofthetwonewclassroomsattheschool.

Theschoolhadbeenquite inadequatetocopewiththe growingenrolmentand somethinghadtobedone; theyhaddoneitinfine style.

ProfessorHuxleyisquotedassayingthatthe educatedmannolongerbelievestheworldisflat. ItisnottheProfessor'sfaultthatitisnot,forhe hasasingulartalentforboredom.Onewould thinkhehadjustputdownhisgrandfather's memoirsorhadnotheardthatHaeckelandHarnack werenomoredeadthantheirideas.

JulianHuxleyisasurvivalfromthe19thcentury. Fromtheglibwayhetalksanyonewouldimagine thathehadnotbeentrampingoverthemoundsof discardedscientifictheoriesforthepast50years. Onewondershowhisfamilyhasbeenabletoforget socompletelytheterrificsnubtheyhavesuffered atthehandsoftimeovertheirevolutionary braggadocioandtheiramusinghuntafterthesource oflife.

Itisnottomypurposetobelittletheeminence ofJulianHuxley-orofThomasHuxleyforthat matter-inthefieldsofbiologyandzoology.Itis verymuchtothepoint,however,topointtotheir pauperisminthesphereofphilosophy.

Thefirstballetwas"Fifth Symphony."Themusicis byTchaikowsky,theproductionandchoreography byYurekShabelewski,and thesceneryandcostumesby WilliamConstable.

Choreographyanddecor arewellmatched-theyare bothratherangular,especiallyinthefirstscene.

Tomethemusicistoo fluidforthestiffnessofthe choreography,andtheresultisacertainincongruity aboutthemovements.This isnotsonoticeableinthe secondscene,andthethird sceneisquiteflowing.

Thefourthscenehas practicallythewholecast onthestageincorpsde balletworkwhichdemands extremeprecision.Even allowingfortherestricted space,theprecisionwasnot good,particularlyinthe malesection,andtheresult wasslightlyconfused.
