OurLadythisyearhad aspecialbirthdaygreetingfromonewireless stationonthefeastofher Nativitywhenthehymn, "MotherDearest,Mother Fairest,"popularisedby themanynovenastoOur Lady,wasplayedina requestprogramme.
Alengthylistofnames fromtheGoldfieldswas readoutasrequestingthe hymn.Nonewhoheardthe beautifulrecordingused couldhelpbutbemovedby it.Apparentlyitisafairly frequentandpopularrequestitemasitwellmerits.

WhenPresidentEisenhowerthrewdownthat magnificentchallengeondisarmamentrightinthe teethofBulganin,theevilmenoftheKremlin began,Ibelieve,torealisethatfairwordswould nolongermatchthehardfactsofthecoldwarand oftheresolutespiritoftheWesttoyieldnoground forglibpromises.
SotheSoviet,frightenedbytherestored sovereigntyofWesternGermanydeterminedatall coststodestroytherealthreatwhichare-armed GermanylenttoNATO.
AStateTreatywasarrangedwithAustriasuch asmightsimplyhavebeensettledtenyearspreviously.AdenauerwasinvitedtoMoscow,and despitehisbeingsomewhatlonginthetoothfor the§oviettypeofwooing,hesucceededinsecuring thepromiseofthereleaseofsome10,000German prisoners-of-warinSoviethands.Againthe "concession"wasmerelydischarginganobligation injusticewhichhadbeendeniedforadecade.
YetmorerecentlytheSoviethasrenouncedbases inFinlandtowhichitoriginallyhadnoright.
Innotasingleinstanceisthereanyquestionof anactofgrace.Onthecontrarythereisonevery occasionabrazenimplicitadmissionofinjustice andtyrannycombinedwithacynicalunrepentance.
Butuntilveryrecentlytherehasbeennoexplicit confessionofthissort.ButafterAdenauerhad leftMoscowwithhis"concessions"inhispocket, theKremlinfelttheneedofassuringitssatellite, EasternGermany.AndKruschev,towhomtruthis inmuchthesamecategoryasmurder,madethe preposterouslygaucheanddamagingadmission thatifanyoneinterpretedthepresentRussian smilesasanyradicaldeparturefromthepoliciesof LeninandStalin,hewasverymuchmistaken.
Inonesentencethepretenseofco-existencewas demolished.Itisthefirsttokenofmentalhealth toemergefromtheintellectualcrematoriumofthe Kremlin,anditcouldonlyhavebeenmadeunder thepressureofgreatneed,andthatwasthe necessitytopacifytheuneasypuppetregimein Soviet-occupiedGermany.Afterall,theyhave seen treatedAustria"liberated"andWesternGermany asasovereignState.Theywouldhaveto havesomethingmorethanabonetothrowtheir sownrestlessherrenfolk.Forinthelongrunthey knowthatnothingwillpreventthereunionofthe Germanpeople.
MeanwhileChouEn-laihasreleasedahandful ofAmericanprisoners,includingsomemissionaries whomhehadnojustificationforholdinginthefirst instance.ButKruschev'swordhasmadethatgesture asemptyastheRussians'own.Itisnotwewho havemadeliarsoftheCommunists.Theyhave convictedthemselvesoutoftheirownmouths. Theyhavemadefreelyafamous"confession"such astheyareaccustomedtowringbytorturefrom theirvictims.
Evenmorenearlytheyhavemadefoolsoftheir propagandistsinourmidst.Theirofficialand unofficialspokesmenwillhavesomefasttalkingto dotoexplainhowRussia,ChinaandCommunism atlargecanreconcilelivingatpeacewiththeworld withadherencetoplansforworldrevolution.
SomelittlewhileagoPopePiusXIIspokethe onlysanewordsIhaveheardonco-existence.He saidtherecouldonlybeco-existenceintruth. Kruschev,unwittinglyorunwillingly,hascomplied. HehasadmittedthattheSovietsmiles,theempty gestures,thevodkapartiesandtherestmean nothing.Russiahassimplychangedtacticsbuther realfinalgoaltoruletheworldisasclearlyinsight asinLenin'sday.

ThesplitintheChurchofEnglandbetweenthe "Catholic"andthe"Protestant"factionswidened markedlywiththedecisionoftheRev.Walton Hannah,leaderofastrongfactionof"Papalist" Anglicanclergy,toembracetheCatholicFaith.
Mr.HannahissecretaryoftheAnnunciation Group,composedofsome2,000ofthemostactively pro-CatholicAnglicanclergyinthiscountry.He endedhisyearsofpersonaluncertaintybybeing receivedintotheChurchattheJesuitChurchof theImmaculateConception,Farm-st.,London,by FatherAnthonyStephenson,S.J.
HeisthefourthAnglicanclergymantosubmit totheHolySeeinrecentweeks.Itwasintimated athisreceptionthatanumberofothers,rumoured tonumberbetween20and30,mayfollowhis examplewithinafewmonths.Severalareknown tobeunderinstruction.
Mr.Hannah,41,aclergymanfor16years,has forlongbeenregardedassomethingofarebelin theAnglicanranks.Heiswellknowntothegeneral publicforhiscampaign,particularlythroughtwo best-sellingbooks,againsttheinfluenceofFreemasonryintheChurchofEngland.TheAnglican Church'secclesiasticalleader,ArchbishopGeoffrey FisherofCanterbury,ishimselfaMason.
Mr.Hannah'sconversion,thoughnotunexpected, followsdirectlyononeofthemostseriouscrisesthat hashittheStateChurchsinceitwaslaunchedby KingHenryVIIIandlaterbyQueenElizabethI some400yearsago.
ThecrisisarosefromtheStateChurch'sofficial decisionlastJulytorecognisethenewinterdenominationalChurchofSouthIndia.Thisisa unionofAnglicans,Methodists,Presbyteriansand Congregationalists.TheStateChurchacceptedthe validityofitsordinationsandconsecrations.
"Freemasonry,"wrotetheRev.Hannah,"stands forreligiousindifferentismandtherapidspreadin theChurchofEngland,evenamongAnglo-Catholic clergy,ofthisreligiousbutnon-ChristianorganisationwithitssystemofoathswhichcannotbejustifiedbytheprinciplesofChristianmoraltheology, isyetanothersymptomthatAnglicanismcannot claimtobeanEcclesiaDocensfearlesslyteaching theFaithofChristtotheexclusionofrivals."
HewentontocriticisetheChurchofEnglandfor its"powerlessnessinthefaceofvestedintereststo makeanyinquiryintothismatter."
Mr.Hannah,whoisunmarried,hopestobe admittedtoBedaCollege,theEnglishseminaryin Rome.
Thoughhisconversionisinitselfbothdramatic andimportant,nosensationaldevelopmentsare likely,atleastatpresent.Mr.Hannah'sdecision, however,issaidheretoshowclearlythewaythe ChurchofEnglandisbeingtornasunderinthe presentsincereProtestantbattleagainstirreligion withalargesectionoftheclergy,the"High Church,"turningtowardsCatholicismbutthe majority,the"LowChurch,"towardsageneral looseNonconformistcreed.Developmentswillbe slow.
PeronismStays
JuanPeronhasprovedhimselfthemostunforgivablekindoffool-ofthesortwhogetsthesecond chanceandthrowsitaway.Ifhehasindeedfallen itcanonlybeofbenefittotheworldatlargeand ofrelieftotheCatholicChurch,butthatisnotthe wholeofhisstory.
Theevilthatmendolivesafterthem,andeven thoughPerongoesPeronismremains.Nocorporate bodyfeelstheaftermathoftyranniessomuchas theChurchbecauseShealonehasthepulseofthe themoralandspiritualvaluesbywhichthese legaciesofevilmaybeassessed.
TheStatesoonerorlatewillexperiencethe practical,outwardmanifestationsofthesemoral malaisesbutitcannotanddoesnotaspiretodeal withthemintheircausesbutonlyintheireffects.
HencetheChurchinGermanyhashadtobattle notonlywithayouthfulgenerationpaganisedby theNazisbutwithasuccessiveonepoisonedwith theevenmoredeadlyvirusofMarxism.Italy,too, hasscarcelyrecoveredfromtheFascistadventure whichlikewisefounditselfinconflictwithChristian principles.
FortunatelyfortheArgentine,Peron'sregime,in itsfrontalonslaughtonCatholicismhasnotbeen abletomakemuchimpactintenmonths.Butthe indirectinfluencesofthenineyearsofdictatorship haveunleashedunhealthyideasanddeplorable practices,nottheleastdebasedofwhicharepolitical sycophancyandpatronageinagovernment-run unionsystem.
Whatthefuturehasinstorethereisnowayof knowinguntilsomesortoffreedomispermittedto pressandradio.Iftherevolutionissimplythe substitutionofonemilitaryjuntaforanother, neithercountrynorChurchwillbeglad.
SabbatarianCamelOfPuritanism
Sabbatarianismappearstoberampantinoneof itsparticularlysillyseasonsinLondon.Itwould seemthattheDukeofEdinburgh,afterattending DivineWorship,hashadthetemeritynotonlyto playpoloonSundaybuteventoindulgeinagame ofcricket.Itmaywellbethataddictionto organisedsportisnotasymptomofmentalstamina, butnostretchoftheimaginationcanmakeita violationofdivinelaw,evenonSunday.Whatis sogrotesqueabouttherighteousindignationofthe Nonconformistsistheirfailureinmoralleadership overthereallyimportantissueofthePrincess Margaret'sallegedromance.Itseemstheyhave overcometheScripturalanomalyofstrainingata gnatandswallowingacamelintheveryfinest traditionsoffundamentalism.
OneofthecentraldifficultiesabouttheNonconformistattitudetotheLord'sDayisthatthey arefarmoreintentontheirpersonalandprivate interpretationsofitsobligationsthanupontheclear teachingoftheNewTestamentandoftheFathers oftheChurch.SomeregardforChristiantradition wouldhaverescuedthemfromsomeoftheabsurditiesintowhichpersonalpreferencehasdelivered them.TheteachingsofChristOurLordandofSt. PaulpreventedtheearlyChristiansfromfalling intotheexcessesofJewishsabbatarianisminthe observanceofSunday,buttheyhavefailedutterly toforestalltheliteral-mindedobstinacyoftheNonconformists.Thepracticeandtraditionofthe ChristianChurchduringthefirstthreecenturies showthatSundayisconsecratedtothepublic worshipofGodandtorestingfromwork.
InthesixthcenturySt.Caesariusandothers tendedtoapplythelawoftheJewishSabbathto theobservanceoftheChristianSunday-atrend thatwasscoutedbytheCouncilofOrleansin538 as centuryJewishandnon-Christian.Fromtheeighth onwardsthelawasitexiststodaybeganto beformulated.Theprohibitionagainstservile work,buyingandselling,pleadinginthecourts,the publicandsolemntakingofoaths,etc.,beganto haveeffect.Muchofwhatwasoriginallyecclesias- ticallawwasincorporatedintocivillegislationfrom theEdictofConstantineonwards.Afterthe ReformationandunderPuritaninfluenceextraordinarystringencyenterstheissueandsurvives tothisdayintheEnglishProtestantSabbathwhich isstrictlycomicoperastuffsofarastheContinent isconcerned.
Itmaybeconcededthatconsiderablelaxityhas creptintotheobservanceofSundayastheLord's Day.Inthemainthisliesinthefailureofso manytoemploythedayasanoccasionforthe publicworshipofGod.Secondarily,thereisper- hapstooliberalaninterpretationoftheterm "servilework"evenintheorganisationofvoluntaryworkforchurchpurposes.Butgiventhe fulfilmentoftheprimaryneedofworshippingGod thereisnoreasonwhysportneedconstitutea violationoftheLord'sDay.Itinvolvesnoderoga- tionofthedutiesmanowestoGodandcomplies veryappropriatelywiththepurposesofrelaxation andrefreshmentwhichlaybehindtheDivine ordinanceininstitutingaweeklydayofrest.The Nonconformistsmightemploytheirenergiesto muchgreateradvantageintheChristiancause.

Originallynoespecial prayersweresaidinpreparationforHolyCommunion,whichwasregarded anessentialpartofthe wholesacrificialaction.The prayersandceremoniesof theoblationandimmolation(byconsecration)led naturallytothevitalassimilationofthebodyof Christ.
SirAlfredcomplimented theuniversityonreinstating itsFacultyofLawin1959. Hesaidlawstudentsin Ottawaindeedwerefortunateinattendingauniversitywithareligious background.
Thoughsomemighthold thatreligionandlaware separateentities,hesaid, law,religionandmorality arecloselyintegrated,and infactaredependentone ontheother.

Aftertheblessing,HisLordshippresidedincopeandmitreattheMissa Cantata,whichwascelebratedbythe Rev.J.J.O'Mahony,parishpriestof Wagin.
ThechoirfromtheWaginConvent sangtheMassinanaccomplished manner,whileonthesanctuarythe altarboysfromWaginefficientlyper- formedtheceremoniesoftheMass.

Theconsecrationofthe humanracetotheSacred HeartofJesustakesplace everyyearduringtheliturgicalcelebrationofthefeast ofChristtheKing,sinceits institution(1925).
Anotherconsecrationof theworldtotheImmaculateHeartofMaryistobe theimportanteventinthe celebrationofthefeastof Mary'sQueenshipdecreed in1954.

Indeedthefoundersofthe liturgicalmovement,who steadfastlyadheredtothe purelytraditionalinterpretationoftheliturgy,astheir timesdemanded,would havescarcelysurmisedthe breadthofinterpretation giventoitbyrecentPopes.

Hishonestywaseither impugned,orelsetakenas aninstanceofignoranceor weakness.
Hisattitudeonthequestionofslaverystruckthe sparkthatsetofftheCivil War,andforalmostthe wholeofhisfirsttermas PresidentNortherndefeat followeddefeatwithconsequentattacksonLincolnas thecauseofthemisfortunes oftheUnion. HisSouthernorigin,and thefactthathiswife's familyfoughtonthesideof theConfederacywereeven usedasthebasisofaccusationsoftreachery. Fromearlyyouthhe sufferedfromfitsofexcru-

Hisonlyinjuryfromthe Germanswasthelossofthe endofhisbigtoe.Passedon acrossNorwaybygroupsof sympatheticpartisans,he triedtocrosstheLyngen Alps,fell300feetinan avalanche,andwandered foraweekwithnofood, sufferingfromconcussion, severefrostbiteandsnow blindness.
Fromthisstageonwards hewasunabletohelphimselfatall,andhewas eventuallysmuggledona stretchertothegreatArctic plateauonthecrestofthe Alpswherethepartyof Norwegianfriendswhohad shelteredhimlefthimto bepickedupbyanother groupfromtheotherside oftheplateau.
Fateagainsteppedin;a Germanpatrolhelduphis rescuers,andfor27dayshe layhelplessonthetopof theworldcoveredoverby aheavysnowstormuntil eventuallyhehadtobedug out.
DavidHowarthmethim whenhereturnedtoScotland,andin1953heproposedtoBaalscrudthatthey shouldfollowtheroutehe hadtakenandtrytoreconstructthewholeincrediblejourney.

NestorianIdeas?
Therearescholarswho believetheyadoptedideas fromNestorianism.That ancientheresy,whichretainedagreatdealof Catholicritualism,was onceextremelystrong.
Itwasconfinedchieflyto Asiaand,thoughitwas virtuallykilledoffinthe sweepofMohammedanism, itforgenerationsclaimed millionsofmembers.There arestillafew.
Inrecentgenerations, someauthoritiesbelieve thattherealsohasbeendeliberateimitationbythe LamaistsofmodernCatholicritualism.

SuccessiontotheLama pontificateisbymeans,itis claimed,ofreincarnation, andtheheirsarechosen throughasystemofmagic andomens.
Itisallverymysterious totheWesternworld,butit representssimplesuperstitionthathasnobasisin thesupernaturalorthe scientific.
Buddhismisdividedinto manysects.Thoughoneof
thelargestofreligions,it hasnothingatallofthe supernaturalaboutit.
GuatamaBuddha,its founder,whodiedin483 B.C.,wasmarried,left home,wife,andchildren, becauseanascetic,and establishedanorderof wandering"monks."
He achievementtaughtthatthehighest isnirvana,a releasefromsufferingand mortality,andthatmenand godsneedsuchaformof salvation.Buddhaheldthe savingactofthehuman willastheonethingneedful.
Nirvanaseeminglyimplies alossofconsciousnessand ofpersonality.Throughit oneescapesfromrepeated existencesthattheBuddhistssaycomethrough transmigration.

Onlytheannihilationof desire,itistaught,cangive releasefromsuffering,and theeight-foldwayofescape isthroughrightbelief, rightresolve,rightword, rightact,rightlife,right effort,rightthinking,right meditation.
Asonecanseethereisa considerableattentionto ethicsinBuddhism,with thechiefdoctrinalstresson theideathatsufferingisinherentinlifeandthatthe greatestgoodisescapefro:n lifeandsuffering.
Buddhaclaimedthatit hadbeenrevealedtohimin his"greatenlightenment"thatexistenceissuffering, thatsufferingfindsitsorigin indesire,thatsuffering stopswhendesirestops,and thatdesirestopsthrough theeight-foldethicalsteps pointedoutabove.
Buddhaputsemphasison gentleless,self-denial,and compassion.Hetaughtthe renunciationofsensual pleasure,thoughinhistoric facttheOrienthasnever beennotedforchastity.
Thereisasenseofsin amongBuddhistsand,surprisingly,Buddhahimself institutedpublicconfession, beforethewholecongregation,ofsinsandfaults.
WhatIsNirvana?
Hisideaof"contemplation"wastrancelikeand selflessmeditation,nothing liketheideaofChristian contemplation,whichis basedonaconsciouspersonalunionwithGodand isforthemostpartaccompaniedbyintensemental actionthatdoesnotoriginateinthesubjectbutisinfusedbyGod.
