Thenfollowedthesumming-upoftheconference andarallyinthehallwhich wasattendedbyparents andfriends.
Onehundredandtwenty girlsattendedtheconferenceoverallandofficials claimthatallmembers gainedmuchfromitand renewedtheirfervourin theireffortsforChrist.
BishopGoody'sopening addressonperseverancewas veryinspiring.Hestressed theneedforconviction, courageandconfidenceif membersweretopersevere intheN.C.G.M.

Thatstepsbetakento establishanN.C.G.M.group atTeachers'TrainingCollege.Alsothataleaders' groupbeformedwithinthe AthleticClub.
Itwasfeltthatifthe movementwastoexpand, afull-timeworkerwas necessaryanditwasmoved thatafinancecommitteebe appointedtogointothe possibilitiesofpayinga full-timesecretary.
Thatthefirstpartof nextyearbedevotedtoa localenquiryonwhythe N.C.G.M.isnotreaching girlsinfactorieswhere thereisadefiniteneedfor themovement.
Itwasseenfromthesecretary'sreportthat,although membershiphadincreased slightlythisyear,themovementcouldhavemanymore girlsinitsranks.
Asubsequentmotion waspassedthateveryCatholicschoolinPerthshould beinvitedattheendof eachyeartorecruitnew members.
Agreatereffortistobe madetocontactNewAustralianstojointhemovementasitwasseenthata verysmallpercentageof N.C.G.M.memberswere NewAustralians. Everysectionofthe movementwasdiscussedin

AlaterN.C.W.C.newsrelease,thatuseoftheLatinEnglishandLatin-French ritualhadbeenextendedto allthediocesesofCanada, wascounterbalancedbya reportfromEnglandthat thehierarchyofthatcountryhavedecidedforthe presentnottoaskformore vernacularintheritual.
Anewtranslationofthe ritualis sponsored,beingofficially butnotforof-
ficialuse,reportsaliturgicalpublication. Followingtheinterest showninallthingsliturgi- calduringtheMelbourne Liturgicalgatheringearlyin theyear,itseemeddesirable toapplyforanextensionof theconcessionsmadefor AmericaandCanadato Australia.Thiswasreadilygranted.
ThehistoryoftheAmericanversionofthe"CollectioRituum"isinteresting.In1946theAmerican LiturgicalConferencedecidedthatthepromotionof theuseofthevernacularin divineworshipdidnotcome withinthescopeoftheConference.
Asocietywasthenformedto problem.dealdirectlywiththe Itwasfirstcalled"St.Jerome'sSociety," butin1948thenamewas changedto"TheVernacularSociety."
Somebishop-membersof thevernacularsocietywere readyin1950toaskforan extensionofthevernacular,buttheopportunitydidnot presentitself.Thiswas offeredbythe1951annual meetingofthebishops.
During1952apanelof expertliturgistsandEng-lishscholars-together withmorethan64co-optedconsultantsincludingfive fromEnglandandrepresen- tativesfromFrance,Germany,Italy,Canada,Africa, Australiaandothercoun- tries-wenttowork.

Theresultwasthepre- sentationofafavourable reporttogetherwiththe textofarevisedritualincludingportionsinEnglish. tionsFollowingnewsuggesandconstructivecriticismsfromtheBishopsand fromtheConfraternityof ChristianDoctrine,towhich itwasreferred,thecommitteeofworkersandconsultantswentbacktowork withwillandenergy.
Afurtherreviseddraft wasthusproduced,which wasunanimouslyapprovedbytheBishops(1953)and submittedtoRomefor authoritytoputitintouse. Theapprovalwasgivenin 1954.

ThereareunhappyindicationsthattheArgentinian revoltwasonlythefirstphaseofastruggle,the indecisiveoutcomeofwhichcanonlyberesolved byanewrevolutionandperhapsbycivilwar.
Whilethe"shirtlessones"andanelementofthe armyareseethingwithdiscontentatthecorruption, repressionandintimationthathavemarkedPeron's ten-yeardictatorship,anotherlargemilitarysegment andtheunionsarestronglyPeronist,ingratitudefor thebenefitstheyenjoy.
Peron'sapparentchangeofheartafterthepopular revulsionwhichfollowedtheJune16revoltandhis promisestorestorepopularfreedomwereseemingly lyingpretextswhichwouldenablehimtogetridof themoderatearmyinfluenceandtorallyhisshaken cohorts.
ArecentdeclarationbytheMinisterfortheInterior andJustice,OscarAlbrieustatedthaithegovernmentwasplanningtorenewtheanti-Church offensivedramaticallyhaltedbytheJulyrevolt. Alreadyanewcampaignofcalumnyandslander hasbeeninaugurated.
OntheotherhandDr.JeronimoRemorino, MinisterofForeignAffairsandWorship,hasresigned.HewasoneofthekeymenintheantiChurchcampaignlaunchedbythePerongovernment ninemonthsago.
Heisthesixthcabinetmembertoresignsince June.Twofurtherportfoliosareexpectedtobe tenantlessshortly.Theoddfeatureoftheseresignationsisthatthemenwhoarelayingdownoffice arealsoleavingthecountry.
Whatthatindicates,tomymind,isthatPeron's minionsmaybewiserthantheirmaster.For,if Peronisplanningacome-back,hemaywellhave miscalculatedavitalfactor.Hewillnotbefighting thesameCatholicfrontasinNovember,1954,or eveninJune,1955.Hewillfindhisenemyprodigiouslyreinforced.
Hemaynothavereckonedwiththegreatmasses ofthepopulationwho,inadditiontobeingCatholic. equatePeronismwithreligiouspersecution.
ItisreliablyreportedthatindifferentCatholics havebeenshockedoutoftheirlethargybythe extremesatwhichPeronatleastconnivedinJune.
Farfromweakeningtheprestigeandinfluence oftheChurch,thePeronistexcesseshaveintensified ratherthandiminishedtheloyaltyofthelukewarm. Thiswasaclear-cutchoice:PeronortheFaith.
ItwasnotedatthetimethatwhenPeronoffered thehandoffriendshipandreconciliation,hemade nomoveofrealsignificancetoendhisunilateral quarrelwiththeChurch.Hismanoeuvrewasvery liketheSoviet's-allwordsandverysmallacts.
Onthecontrary,activepersecutionoftheChurch hasrecommencedwithnewarrestsofpriestson "assassination"charges.Sermonnotesarebeing employedasgagsontheclergyandthereisthe unconstitutionalthreatofabolishingtaxconcessions onchurchproperties.
DespitethesuppressionoftheCatholicpress, thereisaconstantfloodofsurreptitiouspropaganda andaverbalbarragewhichitisliterallyimpossible tosuppress.Ithasoneburthen-thatthedownfall ofthePeronregimeisanecessaryconditionforthe futureofArgentinaandthatitisonlyamatterof time.
AtthesametimenosaneChristiancancontemplatetheprospectofrevolutionorcivilwarwith complacency.Whenonerecallsthesavageryof Spain'sordealduring1936-39,onepraysthatthis nation-ofthesameculture-maybesparedthat fate.
Butthedecisionisinthewillofoneman.The Church,asStalinsaid,hasnodivisions.Itisfor Perontodecidewhetherhewillsmash-vainlyand finally-againsttheRockofPeterorwhetherhe willreformhisregimeinconsonancewithliberty, sanityandtheChristianaspirationsofhissubjects.

TheRussiansareengagedindentaldisplayswhich tendinmanyquarterstoconcealtheabsenceof majoractsofpeace.Fortunatelythereisauniversal testwhichcouldbeappliedtotheSovietregarding itspacificintentions,butWesternpoliticiansaretoo delicatetopressit.ItisthestatusoftheCatholic Church.LettheRussianspermittheChurchtolive againinfullfreedomintheSovietandsatellite countriesandallmenwillbelieveforthwiththat freedomandpeacearenotmerewords.

Thebenefitssecuredtogetherwithcertaintaxation remissionsfromtheFederalspheremarkan alleviationofagrotesquelyunfairsituationfor CatholicparentsandforCatholictaxpayers generally.Itwillbe60yearsnextmonthsincethe disablingActof1895waspassedwhichwasintendedtoforcesecularismuponCatholicparents. Itwasasignalfailureandwhilethealternative-thebuildingandmaintenanceofaseparateschool system-hasbeenamountingdemandonCatholic parents,ithasclarified,purifiedandstrengthened theirFaith.Whatthemoralvalueofthatprogressivesacrificehasbeenworthisknownonlyto GodbutithastoughenedthefibreofAustralian Catholicismbeyondcomputation.
Moreover,thegrantingofevenmodestconcessions doesmarksometokenofconscientiousuneaseon thepartofgovernmentsregardingtheplightofthe Catholicschoolsandasmallwedgemayoftenbe widened.Whatisparticularlyengagingaboutthe presentmildoffensiveisthatithasbeenmounted, forthefirsttime,bythepartiesconcernedmost intimately.Inpre-waryearstherewasaCatholic Taxpayers'Associationwhichraisedandspenta gooddealofmoneyandpossiblyopenedtheeyesof sometoaglaringsocialanomaly.Butitcarried toomanypassengers,toomanyquitegoodCatholics whowereinterestedintheschools'questiononlyin anacademicfashion.Atalltimesthehierarchyhas hadthequestionclosetoheartbecausethesalvation ofsoulsisatstakeintheschools.Butinthelong runitistheparents'businessandtheyhavemade anincisiveifsmallbeginning.
In1895BishopGibneywasfacedwithaParliamentaryCommitteewhichhadalreadydecidedto abolishtheAssistedSchoolsystem.Theonly reasonhehadtogiveevidencewasinorderto arriveatsomecompensationforthelosshewould suffer.Nothinghecouldhavedoneorsaidwould havepreservedtheCatholicschools.Underduress andwithnoalternativeheacceptedthepitiable morselof£15,000.Actually,beforetheCommission,heestimatedthevestedinterestsoftheCatholic educationalorganisationat£84,975/11/0i.
WhenaskedbythechairmanifhewouldbepreparedtosellandhandovertheCatholicschoolsat thisvaluation,BishopGibneyreplied:"Icertainly shouldnothandthemovertoanyoneatthatvaluation.Ihaveputavaluationuponthemwhichis verymoderate,simplytoshowwhatwehavedone forthecauseofeducationencouragedbythe government."
Againhestated:"Ifyouaregoingtocutusoff, thenitisstatedwewillgetaliberalofferfromthe government,butthemostgenerousofferwouldnot paytheCatholicbody.Itwouldnotpaythemto accept£100,000."Inreplytoanotherquestion, theBishopsaid,"Iestimatethatitwouldnotpay ustosurrenderourcauseunder£100,000.Ifit waslefttometosaywhetherIwouldsurrender,I wouldsay'No.'"

InthepapalutterancesonCatholicAction,stress isnowplacedononeparticularaspectofthetopic, nowonanother.ThecoherentandcompleteconceptofCatholicActionaccordingtothemindofthe Popesistobehadfromtheharmoniousintegration ofthesediversebutco-relatedapproaches.
Perhapsthemostbasicpointofdeparturetowards "asyntheticanalysisofCatholicActionistoconsider itundertheaspectofaformofactivity.Asaform ofactivity,CatholicActionmaybedefinedas"the collaborationofthelaitywiththehierarchyinthe apostolateoftheChurch"(1).
Thisdefinitionrightlyinfersthatthecentral elementinCatholicActionistheactivityofthe apostolateoftheChurch;itdoesnotimplyhowever thatCatholicActioninvolvesneitherprayernor education.InCatholicAction,asPopePiusXII hasputit,"thefirstandessentialdutyofpersonal sanctificationiscombinedwithanintenseapostolic activity ."(2).Inanycase,prayerandan adequateintellectualformationareindispensable requisitestoanyefficaciousapostolicactivity. Nonetheless,itissuchapostolicactivitythatstands asthecharacteristicandspecificelementwhereby CatholicAction(andotherlayApostolateactivity) isdistinguishedfromthoseassociationsandreligious worksintheChurchwhichhavethepersonalsanctificationoftheirmembersortheworshipofGodas theirproperandexclusiveend.
CatholicActionAndLayApostolate
TheapostolicactivityofCatholicActionisthat of"collaborationintheapostolateoftheChurch." Itisnotlimitedtoanydeterminatetaskwithinthe frameworkoftheChurch'sapostolate:ithas"a general,notaparticularorspecificaim"(3).In thisitisdistinguishedintrinsicallyfromanyother LayApostolateorganisations,whoseactivities"are usuallygearedtowardsaspecial,determinedobject" (4),suchasforinstancetheSt.VincentdePaul Societywhosemembersengagethemselvesinthe apostolateofspiritualandmaterialcharity,the LeagueofSt.GerardMajella,concernedwiththe apostolateoffamilylife,theCatholicFilmSociety withtheapostolateofthecinema.
CertainlyCatholicActioncomeswithinthegenus oftheLayApostolateinasmuchasitbespeaks apostolicactivity.ButwhereasallCatholicAction isLayApostolate,notallLayApostolateisCatholic Action.Forapartfromtheextrinsicdistinguishing characteristic,themandateofthehierarchy,of whichweshallspeakfurtheron,thereisthedistinctionbetweenthegeneralaimofCatholicAction andtheparticularaimoftheLayApostolateorganisations-anaccidentaldistinctionperhapsbutavery realone,leadingtofar-reachingconsequencesas willbecomeevidentasweproceed.

Thebroadandpenetratingformation,soindispensabletoefficaciousCatholicAction,moulds Catholicmenandwomen,boysandgirls,fundamentallycompetenttoactinanyworkofthe apostolate.ThesewilloftenactthroughCatholic Actionorganisationscalledintobeingfora specifictask;atothertimestheywillacteither withinorinconjunctionwithLayApostolate organisationsalreadyinexistence;onother occasionsCatholicActionistswillbeconscious perhapsoftheneedofsomeorganisationforthe concreteactuation,underChristianinspiration,of certainchristianprinciplesintheeconomic,industrial,political,orothersuchdomain:becauseof theirCatholicActionformationtheywillbenotonly desirousbutalsocapableofworkingthroughor establishingsuchorganisations.Itisbecauseit providessuchanexcellenttraininggroundfor activitieswithinandwithoutproperlyso-called CatholicActionunitsthatCatholicActionhasbeen wellcalleda"sortofreceptioncentrewhere Catholicsgathertoorganiseforaction areceptioncentreforactiveCatholicsalwaysreadyto collaborateintheapostolateoftheChurch"(17).
ThosewhoarecalledtocollaborateintheApostolateoftheChurcharebaptisedandconfirmed membersoftheCatholiclaity,whoundertheBishop exerciseresponsibility,leadership,andinitiative.
AdmittedlyintheSodalitiesofOurLadywhich accordingtoPokePiusXIIcanbecalledinthe fullestsenseCatholicAction,theparishpriestisthe presidentbyright.Buthere,too,HisHoliness declares,"priestsleavetotheleaders,andinevery casetowiseandreligiouswomen,allthatthelatter candoontheirown,sometimesevenbetter,and restrictthemselvestotheirsacerdotalduties"(18). Allthefaithfulwithoutexceptionareobligedto giveagoodexamplebyatrulyChristianlife.But whatoftheapostolateinthestrictsense?
OrganisationOfOrganisations
Althoughitiscertainlynoteasytodrawanexact lineofdemarcationshowingpreciselywherethe trueapostolateofthelaityinthestrictsensebegins, neverthelessitcanbesaid"thatthevocationtobe anapostleisnotaddressedtoallalike.Godhasnot giventoeveryoneeitherthepossibilityorthe aptitude"(19).Thusthebusymotherandwifein thehomecouldscarcelybeexpectedtoengagein thestrictlyso-calledapostolate.
HisHolinessPopePiusXII,emphasisesalsothat theworkoftheapostolateisnotnecessarily organised:"therecanbe,andactuallyare,lay apostles,thosemenandwomenwhoseeallthegood tobedoneandthepossibilitiesandmeansofdoing it;andtheydoitwithonlyonedesire:thewinning ofsoulstotruthandgrace"(20).

ThesupremeorgeneralaimofCatholicAction is"tospreadtheKingdomofChristinprivateand publiclife"(5);CatholicActionthereby"provides anapostolatewherebyCatholics,withoutdistinction ofage,orsex,orclass,orparty,maypromote whateverpertainstoreligionormorality"(6).It doesnotconsistonlyinmakingknowntheteaching ofChristbutalso"inleadingmentothesources ofsalvationwhileatthesametimefullyrespecting theirfreedominconvertingthem;andintraining withardentzealthosewhoarebaptisedtobecome perfectChristians"(7);orasourpresentHoly Fatherhassaidonanotheroccasion:"toraiseup ferventbelieverstothelevelofpresentdayneeds, tointroducethosewhohesitateonthethresholdto thewarmandsalutaryintimacyofthehearth,and toleadbackthosewhohaveseparatedthemselves fromreligion,andwhomtheChurchcannotabandon totheirmiserablefate"(8)
EntireReligiousAndSocialSphere
Itmustnotbethoughtthattheactivitiesof CatholicActionextendonlytothepurelyreligious field.They"extendtotheentirereligiousandsocial fieldcoveredbythemissionandworkofthe Church"(9).For"ititwell-known,"continuesHis HolinessPopePiusXII,"thatthenormalgrowth andincreaseofreligiouslifepresupposesacertain measureofhealthyeconomicandsocialconditions. Whocanresistapangofemotionuponseeinghow economicmiseryandsocialevilsrenderChristian lifeaccordingtothecommandofGodmoredifficult andtoooftendemandheroicsacrifices? the Churchhasalwaysbeensolicitousinthedefenceand thepromotionofjustice.
"FromthedaysoftheApostles bythesanctificationofsoulsandtheconversionofinnerfeelings shehasalsosoughtthecureofsocialevils,persuaded assheisthatthepowerofreligionandChristian principlesbringaboutthiscurebetterthanany othermeans"(10).ThroughCatholicAction,then, thefaithful,"intensifyingtheirownspirituallife anddeepeningtheirreligiousconvictions,mayconferonthenationthoseblessingswhichaccrueto civilsocietyfromthedueobservanceofthedivine lawandthezealousfulfilmentofChristianduties" (11).
Theparticularaimsembracedbytheuniversal apostolateoftheChurch,andthereforeofCatholic Action,aremany.Amongthoseexplicitlyreferred toinpapaldocumentsmaybementionedthefollowing:co-operationinthelifeofreligionbyhelping priestsprepareforreligiousfunctions,missions, coursesofinstruction,andbytheteachingofChristianDoctrine;thediffusionofChristianculture:

InaletterontheeffectivepromotionofCatholic Action,Oct.27,1935,PopePiusXIwrote:"firstof all,Weexhortyoutodevotethegreatestcareto thespiritualandintellectualformationofthosewho wishtoserveintheranksofCatholicAction;for thistraining-religious,moralandsocial-seems absolutelynecessaryiftheyaretodoefficientwork intheapostolateinthesedays"(13);andintheEncyclical"DiviniRedemptoris"onAtheisticCommunismheinsistedthat"CatholicActionmustmake itachiefaimtotrainitsmemberswithspecial care withaviewtomakingknowntheChristian solutionofthesocialproblem"(14).
TheimmediateaimofCatholicActionthenisto preparememberswilling,ready,andcapableto undertakeanytaskinanysphereofthereligious andsocialapostolateoftheChurch.Foralthough itisevidentthattheywillnotbe,atalltimes, actuallyengagedinpursuingdirectlythemultiple particularobjectivescontainedwithintheuniversal apostolatetheymustnonethelessbereadyandcompetenttoundertakethisorthattaskshouldthe needariseorshouldtheBishopsorequest.This requisiteofpreparednessforactioninanyeventualityoremergencyrenderstheintegralCatholicmind absolutelynecessaryforCatholicActionist.Without apostlessomouldedaccordingtothemindandheart ofChrist,theChurch,inasmuchasitdependson herhumanelements,cannotrealiseherselfintegrally orhopetobringtoallspheresofsociallifeandto allitsproblems,theefficacyoftheteachingand spiritofHerDivineFounder.
WhereasaparticulartaskassignedtoCatholic Actionmayoftencoincidewiththatofsomeother LayApostolateorganisation,neverthelesstheintegralanduniversaltraininginthereligiousand socialthoughtofChristessentialtoCatholicAction couldneverbeadequatelyreplacedbythemere sum-totalofspecialisedformationsnecessaryor appropriatetooneormoreoftheotherLayApostolategroups.suchasforinstance.theSt.Vincentde PaulSociety,theCatholicYouthOrganisation, whichhoweverpraiseworthyinthemselvesdemand verylittleinthewayofthespiritualandintellectual trainingoftheirmembers.Inthissenseonecan easilyappreciatethedictumofPiusXI,namely, that"CatholicActionisnotonlylegitimateand necessary,butcanhavenosubstitute"(15).
ThetraininggiveninCatholicActionmustbe
Therearehowever,manytaskswithintheframeworkoftheapostolateoftheChurchthatcanbe achievedonlybyorganisedorgroupactivity. CatholicActionbelongsessentiallytothiscategory. PerhapsevenmoreappropriatelyCatholicAction couldbecalledanorganisationoforganisations;for invirtueoftheneedforacertainspecialisation referredtointheparagraphonthetrainingfor CatholicAction,therewillbeformedCatholic Actiongroupsunitedinvirtueoftheirgeneralaim butdifferentiatedbyreasonsofsex,age,occupation. andparticulartask.
Consequentlyitiscustomarytoarrangefor SecretariatsorCatholicActionCommitteesdiocesan,regional,national,andeveninternationalwhichco-ordinatetheactivitiesofCatholicAction groupswithinthemselves,andareinaposition"to facilitateandencourageacordialcollaborationbetweenCatholicActiongroupsandexistingassociations,whoselabours,whetherinthefieldofpersonal sanctificationorsocialservice,deservesowellofthe wholeChurchsothat,thoughretainingtheir autonomy,allmayrejoiceintheblessedbondof fraternalsolidaritywhichshoulduniteallwho dedicatethemselves,eachinhisownmeasure,to theupbuildingoftheBodyofChrist"(21).

Thetwocatacombswere unearthedonViaGiovanni Paisiello,astreetrunning alongsidethepopularpark, called"BorgheseGardens."
InthefirstChristian centuriesthestreethad formedapartoftheancient road,theViaSalaria.
Inthisarea,between1845 andthefirstyearsofthe presentcentury,anoted archeologist,FatherMarchi aOrazioMarucchi,searched forthecemeteryofSt. Pamphilusandworkedto excavateandrestorethe cemeteryofBasilla.
Hewentdownintoa catacombalregioninwhich hefoundasmallroom paintedwithpicturesand ornamentalcharacters.
Later,in1865,Giovanni BattistaDeRossi,examiningarchaelogicalfindingsin anoldwinecellarinthat sameregion,cameuponanothercatacombalareawhich alsocontainedpainted rooms.
WhenFatherMarucchi againvisitedthetworegionsin1872hefoundthat alandslidehadsealedoff accesstothem.
Ithadbeenthebeliefof bothFatherMarucchiand DeRossithatthetwocatacombsmightbeapartof theCatacombsofSt.Pamphilus.
Butwhenthesewererediscoveredin1902,notrace ofthetwosmallercatacombscouldbefound.
Apparentlydistinctfrom theCatacombsofSt.Pamphilus,thetwosmallundergroundburialplacesremainedlostuntil,ahalf centurylater,theywereuncoveredbycityworkmen.
Thetwonewcatacombs formapartofover300catacombs,largeandsmall,that makeawidecirclearound thelimitsoftheancient cityofRome.

Theyaredugoutof second-stratavolcanicdepositscalled"tufa,"amixtureofearthandrock.
