Itmayfairlybesaidthat,apartfromallotherconsiderations, thecitizensofthisStatewouldhavebeenforcedtoinaugurate aMedicalSchoolforWesternAustralia-by1957atthelatest.

TheneedofaMedical Schoolwasrecognisedlong ago.Butvariouseconomic factorsandinternational eventsdivertedpublicattention,perforce,toother projects.

Sotheprojectwasdelayed.Butthealternative trainingcentresofAdelaide andMelbournenowfind theirownresourcestaxed tocopewiththestudentsof theirownStates.

Asnoothermedical schoolintheCommonwealthcanundertakethe trainingofW.Astudents, weareforcedtoshiftfor ourselves-andthatasa measureofimmediate necessity.

DoctorsScarce

Butapartfromthe pressureofevents,there areotherconsiderations whichmustcompeltheattentionofthoughtfulcitizens. Foronething,thepercentageofdoctorstopopulationinthisStateis substantiallybelowwhatit isinothercountries.We haveonedoctorper1,100 people,whereasEnglandhas onein900;Sweden,onein 800.

Mothersandchildrenwill benefitbecausethelatest knowledgeofchildbirthand after-carewillbeavailable fromourmedicalschool.

Moreover,sinceitisdesirabletoachievethehighestpossiblestandardsof publichealth,thisobviously cannotbedonewithoutan adequatesupplyofqualified medicalmen,bothgeneral practitionersandspecialists.

Sinceyoungpeopleinthe Westwhowishedtostudy medicinehadtostudyin otherStates,itisclearthat thecostsinvolvednarrowed themedicalavocationtoa smallminoritywhoseparentswereabletocarrythe burden.

Inaddition,manyof thosetrainedelsewhere, eventuallypractisedelsewhere.Manypromising students,moreover,were preventedfromembarking onamedicalcareer.

Itissurelyanomalous thataStatewhosepopulationisincreasingeachyear by3.6percent.shouldhave nofacilitiesfortraining doctors.

Theworkerwillbenefit becauseindustrialdiseases willbereducedbythestudy ofbothpreventionandcure.

Veryoften.afterthepersecutionsoftheRomanEmpirehadceasedandthe Churchcouldfunction sociallythepriestwasalso thephysician,asthestory ofSts.CosmasandDamian illustrates.

Theexerciseofpractical charityunderthedirection ofdeaconsgaverisetosystematicnursingandhospitalsThenursingofthe sick,especiallyduringepidemics,hadneverbefore beensowidespread,sowell organisedandsoselfsacrificingasintheearly Christiancommunities.

Thesegroupsandparties havealldenouncedthe "clericalandreactionary" Assemblymajority,which hasorganisedunderthe nameofParliamentary AssociationfortheDefence ofFreedomofEducation.

Itsmembersaremainly popularRepublicans(MRP), IndependentsandDeGaul lists.

Thatinfluencehadextendedthroughthemany priests,brothersandnuns whowereworkinginthe VineyardofOurLordin variouspartsoftheworld, andthroughmanylaymen' also.

Heaskedthemtopray thatinIndiatheChurch, whichwasstrongandvigorous,wouldgroweven stronger.Theyhadintheir Constitutionallthefundamentalrightstopractise, withoutanydifficulty,their Faith.

Forthatreasontheywere abletohaveinIndiaso manysplendidandextraordinarymanifestationsof theFaith.
