SocialJusticeSundayis beingobservedthisyearon September4. Thisyear'sstatement dealswiththenecessityfor decentralisation,whichhas becomeofimmediateimportanceinthelightofthe possibilityofatomicwarfare.Thesocial,economic andreligiousaspectsofdecentralisationarediscussed inadditiontothemilitary aspect. Aclearandlogicalprogrammeforpracticaldecentralisationisalsosetoutin theStatement.
Inhisfirstthreemonths ofpreachinginIreland,he enrolled25,000;infive monthsthenumberhadincreasedto130,000.Later,he gavethepledgeto150,000 infourdays.Intwodays andahalfheenrolled 100,000. Duringthreemonthsin Englandhegavethepledge to600,000.Itisestimated thatFatherMathewgave thetotalabstinencepledge to7,000,000peopleinthree countriesinafewyears.

WhenthegreatinternationalBasilicaoftheAnnunciationis builtatNazarethitwillbethefourthchurchtostandonthe sacredsitewheretheAngelGabrielannouncedtoMarythatshe wastobecometheMotheroftheRedeemer,manyaProtestantexpert, whocametotheHolyLand toscoffatCatholicsites,remainedtheretoprayalongwiththespiritsofhis Catholicancestorsofother centuries.
Threechurcheshavealreadystoodonthehallowedsite.Thelastonewas thechurchbuiltbyFranciscansin1730-nowremovedtomakeplacefor theprojectednewbasilica. Thosewhohavevisited the18th churchcenturyFranciscan willrecallthebroad marblestairwaywhichled downadozenorsosteps intotheHolyGrottowhich wasMary'shomeandthe sceneoftheIncarnation.
Itwasatthetopofthis stairwaythatthefoundationsoftheprimitivechurchwerefound,atrightangles tothestairs.
Inbuildingtheirchurch toreplacetheruinedCrusaders'church,theFranciscanshadbeenobligedby theexistingTurkishregime to withincompletetheproject sevenmonths.Forcedtoworkinhaste,theyperhapslittlerealisedhow neartheirnewentranceto theSacredGrottowastothe earliestknownchurch.Even iftheydidsuspectit,they hadlittletimeforexplora- tionunderthetermsimposedbytheTurksforcompletingtheirchurch.

Thisyear,1955,isthe 300thanniversaryofthe successfuldefenceofthe monasteryofCzestochowa againsttheSwedisharmy. AtthattimePolandwasinvadedbytheSwedeswhose kingCharlesGustavwantedtobecomekingof Poland.
Thesituationwasvery seriousforthePolesasthe Swedisharmywasvery strong,andasitwasnot theonlyonewhichattack-

Thehandfulofdefenders undertheleadershipofthe Prior,FatherAugustinKordecki, deedsperformedmany ofgallantryand braveryagainst9,000 Swedesduring40daysof siege.
Thenewsofthesiege stirredthePolishpeople. Theycouldnotsuffertheir HeavenlyMothertobeinsultedbytheinvaders.All overPolandeventhepoor peasantsbegantoattack Swedishtroops.
AstheSwedesinthis stateofaffairsneededtheir armyelsewhere,theyhad toraisethesiegeofCzestochowaonDecember27, 1655.Thisdefenceof CzestochowahasbeenlookeduponbythePolesasa miracleperformedbythe ImmaculateVirgin.
Thefightundertakenin thenameofOurLadygave thePolestheultimatevictoryandJohnCasimirreturnedtoPoland.
