Specialremembrancewill bemadeofthe350,000 Poleswhowerekilled,as aresultofRussiantreach ery,duringtheinsurrection ofWarsawagainsttheGermansin1944.

Theinsurrectionbeganon August1,1944,andlasted 68days.WhentheSoviet forcesfailedtolendtheir support,thePoleswere forcedtocapitulateandthe Nazistookafearfulreprisal.

NowDr.Fisherisnothingifnotasuperbtactician. Sohebeganhispresidentialaddressbylaunchinga violentattackuponthe CatholicChurch,warning membersofConvocation againstthe"greatevil"in theRomansystemwhich Anglicansmustatallcosts avoid.

Underthesensationalheading,"AnglicanstoJoinRome," theLondon"NewsChronicle,"ofJuly8last,tolditsreaders:"BeforeChristmasagroupofAnglo-CatholicpriestsoftheChurchof EnglandwillhavesubmittedtoRome.Thiswasdisclosedlast nightbytheRev.HughRossWilliamson,playwright,biographer, andLondonclergymansince1943." a

ManyCatholicpapers havesaidthatDr.Fisher "usedacrisisinsidehisown ChurchtobegrosslydiscourteoustotheCatholic Church."

ThatIdonotbelieveto betrue.Hemadeuseof anonslaughtontheCatholicChurchinaneffortto solveacrisiswithinhisown Church. Withmasterlystrategy, heplayeduponthefact thatanti-Romanprejudice canbereliedupontounite Anglicanbishopsasno party-politicswithintheir ownChurchcandivide them.

"Perhapsthegreatest hindrancetotheadvanceof thekingdomofGodamong menliesintheecclesiastical'apartheid'ofthe RomanCatholicChurch,"he said.

"Itreadsliketheprospectusforacompanyflotation;andindeedthatis whattheSouthIndia Churchinitsinitialstage is-aholdingcompany, framedtocontroltheshares inthreedistinctoperating companies."

AlltheprotestsinEngland,however,weretono purpose.

Ignoringthestormthere, thefourAnglicandioceses overseas,onSeptember27, 1947,threwintheirlot withthenewChurchof SouthIndia,andcutthemselvesofffromtheChurch ofEngland,saveforsome 30,000"continuingAnglicans"whorefusedtohave anythingtodowithit.But theChurchofEnglandobliginglyconsecratednine newbishopsfortheschismaticbody!

Thesituationwassufficientlystartling,andthe LambethConferenceof1948 dealtwithitinatypically Lambethway.

Firstly,itthankedGod forthepromisingeffortsof thenewhybridAngloPresbyterian-MethodistCongregationalistamalgam inSouthIndia,despitefour Anglicandioceseshaving lapsedintoschismfromthe ChurchofEngland.

Secondly,Lambethsaidit lookedforwardtotheday some30yearshence,presumablywhenallexistent nonconformist ministers wouldbedeadandonlyan episcopallyordainedministrywouldsurvive,when fullcommunioncouldbe establishedwithitsbeloved butforthetimebeing errant"ChurchofSouth India."

"Toacknowledgethenon-conformistministryas equallyvalidwithourown isanabsolutecontradiction ofthatreply.

"TheChurchofEngland cannotspeakwithonevoice toRomeandwithanother totheProtestantsofSouth India."

OnTuesday,July5last, thefatefulinterimdecision wasmade.Anditwent thewaytheArchbishopof Canterbury,Dr.Geoffrey Fisher,haddeterminedin advance.

TheArchbishopthenproceededtoendorsetheviews expressedinaLatinsermonbyCanonEricWaldramKemp:

"ThoseRomanswhoarrogatetothemselvesthe Catholicname,whoarethe enemiesofallliberty,and whoceaselesslystriveto makeprofitfromthediscordswhichfromtimeto timeariseoutofourown liberty."
