VaticanCity,July26-HisHolinessPope PiusXIIenvisionsagloriousfutureforthe ChurchinLatinAmerica,butatthesame timeisgravelyconcernedoverpresent-day problemsanddangerousobstaclesfacing apostolicwork.

ThePope'shopesand anxietiesarereflectedina 1"2,500-wordapostolicletter addressedtoHisEminence AdeodatoGiovanniCardinalPiazza,Secretaryofthe SacredConsistorialCongregation,whoisnowpresiding overthegeneralconference oftheLatinAmericanhierarchyinRiodeJaneiro, Brazil.

TheLatinletter,entitled "AdEcclesiamChristi,"(To theChurchofChrist)is datedJune29,thefeastof SS.PeterandPaul,buthas justnowbeenpublishedin OsservatoreRomano,VaticanCitydaily,whilethe hierarchyconferenceis underway.

Thelettergivesthegeneralnormsfortheconferenceandpointstopossible solutionsofsomeofthe mosturgentproblems.

.NotPessimistic

Amongtheseproblems thePopesinglesoutthe shortageofclergy,which hesayscriesoutaboveall othersforsolution.

Thisshortage, whose causesarewellknown, the lettersays,is"thereason forCatholiclifeonthe LatinAmericancontinent showingevermoredangerousdeficiences andit preventsorslowsdownthe LatinAmericanpeoplefrom attaininginthereligious spherethatprogressthey havefortunatelyrealisedin manyotherfields."

Theletterpointstothe possibilitiesofincreased helpforprieststhroughthe workofreligiousbrothers andsistersandthrough membersofthelaity.

"Wetrulybelievethatas longasthenumberof priestsisinsufficientthe bishopscanfindamongthe religiousandlaitytheprovidentialandindispensable helpersfortheworkofthe clergy,"thePope'sletter declares.

LatinAmericanapostolic forcescanalsoprofitfrom wellorganisedcollaboration andbetteruseofmodern technicalmeans, suchas thepressandradio,to spreadCatholicteachings, thelettersays.

Itpointsouttheneedof energeticvigilancetorepel "theastuteenemies"ofthe Church,amongthem"insidiousMasonry,Protestant propagandaandvarious formsofsecularism,superstitionandspiritism andtheperverseteaching ofthosewho,underthe falsepretextofsocialjusticeandpretendingtoimprovethelivingconditions ofthehumblerclasses,attempttotearfromsoulsthe inestimabletreasureofreligion."

Othersubjectssuggested forstudybytheletterwere spiritualaidtoimmigrants andthesocialquestion.Regardingthelatter, thePope saysthattheLatinAmericancountries"offerparticularreasonswhythe bishopsshouldpayattentiontothoseissueswhich arecloselylinkedtoreligiouslife."

Thelettercontainsan apparentreferencetothe troublesinArgentinawithoutnamingthatcountry.It remindsthat"insomeparts ofLatinAmericatherehave notbeenlackingrightupto ourdays-andtalkingabout itfillsoursoulwithdeep pain-battlesandharrassmentsoftheChurch."
