Thebroadcaststatedthat theHungarianregimehad "interrupted"theCardinal's confinementatthepleaof theHungarianBishopsand becauseoftheprelate's stateofhealthandadvanced age. ItstatedthattheCardinal-PrimateofHungary wouldbepermittedtoresideataplaceofresidence providedforhimbythe HungarianBishops.Thebroadcastindicatedonlya temporaryandqualifiedre- lease.
CardinalMindszentyhas beenthefocusofinternationalattentionsincehis arrestand"trial"bythe Budapestregimeoncharges of violationtreason,espionageand offoreignexchangeregulations.Hewas sentencedtolifeimprison- mentonFebruary8,1949.

Lastweekwehadrelativeslivingatourplace.
Theyweremembersof theAustralianJournalists' AssociationandthePrintingIndustryEmployees'Unionwhoworkonthepro- ductionofSydney'sfourdailypapers.
Whentheyweredismissedforrefusingtobreaka long-establishedtradeunion principle,theproprietors decidedtoproducea"composite"dailypaperwiththe helpofseniorexecutive officerswhowerenotinvolvedinthedispute.
Thedismissedjournalists aridprinters,togetherwith menandwomenwhohad been"stooddown,"forthwithdecidedtoproducea dailypaperoftheirown.
Theyhadtworeasonsfor doingthis.Firstly,they wantedthepublictoget thenewsoftheday;secondly,theywantedtousewhateverinfluencetheycouldto secureasettlementofthe disputeonjustandreasonableterms.
Thesetermsweresimply areturntoworkonthe conditionsexistingbefore thedispute,withnovictimisation.
Whenthejournalistsandprintersdecidedtoproduce adailypapertheyhadno resources,noofficeorprintingfacilities.
Theirownassetswere theirprofessionalskills, theircourage-andthetemporaryuseofapublictelephonebox.
TheCommunistPartyimmediatelyofferedtheuseof itsprintingplantandoffices,butthenewspaper employessdeclinedtheofferwiththanks.
Tohaveaccepteditwould haveputthemunderatremendousobligationtothe communists.

Thenthemenwentto work,andin12hoursflat thefirstissueof"The Clarion"wenttopress.
Itwascrazy,butitwas magnificent.
NoonelsebutAustralianworkerswouldhaveattemptedit.
Mechanicalproblemsthat wouldhavedauntedthe biggestandmostmodern' organisationinAustralia weresolvedasquicklyas theyarose.
Inthecircumstances,it mighthavebeenexpected thatsomehot-headed chargeswouldbethrown about.
Nosuchthinghappened.Thetoneofthenewspaperwascalm,soberandresponsible.Nopersonalabuse marreditscontent.Each editorialwasanappealto theproprietorsforaresumptionofworkineach ofthefouroffices.
Everymanon"The Clarion"workedvoluntarily andwithoutpay.Butnever wasthereahappieror moreenthusiasticstaff.
Forthreedaystheystay- edonthejobuntilthedisputewassettled.

Ourrelativeshaveleftus now routineandthequiet,orderly ofCatholicweeklynewspaperproductionhas beenresumed.

Whileherightlyupholdstheindissolubilityofthe marriagebond,itisclearthatheisuncertain,both ofthedoctrinehedefendsandofhisownspiritual authoritytoimplementit.Accordingtopress reportstheArchbishopsaidthereisdisagreementas towhetherChristmadeadefiniteruletobefollowed byHisChurchorwhetherHestatedanidealprin- cipleandlefttheChurchfreetoapplyitasbestit couldinanimperfectandsinfulworld.TheArchbishopfavoursthelatterview.
Patentlythatstatementdestroysthegroundon whichtheArchbishoprestshiscase.Ifthereis roomfordoubt,thenthecontraryviewmaybe correct.Itisnotsufficientmotiveforactionthat theArchbishop,howeverlearnedandholy,holdstooneoftwopossible"views."Foranotherprelate, equallygoodinhisperson,mightleantotheoptional opinion.AndnoChristiancanbeexpectedtobase hisconductonsomebody'spersonalpredelictions.

Whatpuzzlesoneisthataprelatewhoisso"High Church"inhisoutlook,shouldseeminglyfallintothefundamentalisterrorofleaningonScriptureas thechiefsourceofguidance.Forifthereseemstobe anyambiguityaboutScripturaltextsthesurest meansofarrivingatcertainconclusionsisnotby exegeticalargumentbutbyreferencetothetradition oftheChurch.WhatdidtheApostlesandtheir earlydisciplesbelieveandpracticeinthematter?
Inthepresentinstancethehistoricalreference leavesnoshadowofdoubt.Thecontinuousunvary- ingtraditionoftheChurchisuncompromisinglyfor indissolublemarriage.Whatevervicissitudesbeset otherarticlesoftheChristianfaiththereisnomajor challengetotheteachingofChristonmarriagefor 1,500years.
WhenitcamewithLutherandHenryVIIIit emanatedasadenialofwhateveryCouncilofthe ChurchandalltheFathershadtaughtfromatleast thefourthcentury.Itwasheldasacertain,universalrule,anintegralpartoftheDepositofFaith andthePopeconsentedtoloseallEnglandbecause hecouldnotadmitofasingleexceptiontotherule ofindissolubleChristianmarriage.
Dr.MolinegoesontosaythatwiththesecularisationofmarriageandtheadmissionbytheStateof divorce,theChurchofEnglandhadtore-examine itspositionanumberoftimes.Ithadpermittedonly oneexceptiontotheruleofindissolubilityinthe LambethConferenceof1888.Thisdecisionwas, however,reversedin1908bythesamebody.
Butoneexceptionisonetoomany.Itisthe exceptionwhichruinstherule.Andinanycaseit4, issurelyremarkablethattheChurchofEngland shouldfeelimpelledtochangeitslawstosuitthe vagariesofthesecularStateifitslawsarereally Christ's.Andifitcanchangeitsmindonceona fundamentalquestionofChristianbelief,whynot again?Iftheissueofindissolublemarriageisdivine truthitmustnecessarilybeimmutable.
Whatismoretothepoint,however,isnotwhat theChurchofEnglandteaches-onenotesthatthe Lambethdecisionof1908wasarecommendationbutwhatitpractises.Onerecalls,withoutmalice, thataChurchofEnglandminister"married"the DukeofWindsor.Onewondershowmenofthe opinionsofthelateDr.BarnesofBirminghamand DeanHewlittJohnstonwouldregardthesuggestions ofLambeth.ItiscertainlypossibleforChurchof Englandclergymentousetheir"discretion," especiallywheretheissueoftheinnocentpartyis concerned.
ArchbishopMolinehasdonelesstoestablishthe needofindissolublemarriagethanhehastounderlinethesheerneedofanauthoritativeteachingbody toexpoundwithcertaintyandwithoutexceptions whatisthetruthofChristianity.Weak,pusillanimousguidanceisoftenenoughworsethannone. Menwillbreachdogmas,buttheywillscarcely consideritabreachiftheirconductconflictswith mere"views."IfGodhadnotestablishedanauthoritativeteachingbody,itwouldhavebeennecessary eventuallyformentoinventone.
