OnJune22,SisterMaryCamillusofSt. Joseph'sOrphanage,Subiaco,passedtoher rewardattheageof79years.

SistercametoAustralia in1883asachildofseven withherparents,Lawrence andMaryO'Mahoney,and attendedSt.Joseph'sSchool, Victoria-sq.

Latersheenteredthe SistersofMercyandhad beenaprofessedreligious for55yearsatthetimeof herdecease.Shewas amongstthepioneerband whomadethefoundationof thecommunityofSistersof MercyatMidlandJunction wheresheremaineduntil 1914.

Whenthiscommunity againbecamepartofVictoria-sq.convent,Sister Camillusworkedforafew yearsatYorkandToodyay.

In1917shewastransferredtothenewlyestablished St.Vincent'sFoundling HomeatSubiacoandthere sheserved,quietlyand humbly,thehundredsof

Theconvent,inbrickan3 tile,comprises10rooms.Of similarmaterialtheschool hastwolargeclassrooms andanablutionblock.

Thecostoftheconvent was-6,000andofthe school,£5,500. Aftertheceremonyof blessingandofficialopeningofthebuildingsbyHis Grace,theparishpriest,the Rev.M.B.Ryan,extended totheArchbishop,the visitingclergyandSisters, thedistinguishedvisitors andlaityingeneralavery cordialwelcome.

Itappearedatthattimethatthelibertiesofthe Argentinianpeopleweretotteringonthebrink;but nowwhentheirchurcheshavebeenburned,their bishopsexiledandtheirpriestsimprisoned;when theirschoolsaresecularised,theirmoralaspirations insultedbythelegalisationofprostitutionand divorce,noonecanfindahardwordagainstPeron.

ButRome,whileitlacksmilitarydivisions,hasits ownpotentspiritualarms.Inannouncingthat Peronandhiscollaboratorshadcutthemselvesoff fromorganicunitywiththeChurch,itbroughtthe dictatorupwithasharpturn.Thetextofhisbroadcastspeechisbeforeme.Heisatpainstoclaim that"wearenotfightingreligion IamaCatholic andwehavemanyCatholicswithus."Hewillnot shouldertheresponsibilityfortheburningof churches.Hedeploresandcondemnssuchexcesses andblamesthemontheCommunists.

LikewiseinAsiathetideisrunningwiththeVolga. WhileNehruwasdulyimpressedbywhathesaw inPeking,itisnotuninterestingtonotethatan Indianunionleaderrecentlycamehomefromthere indisgust,talkingwithsomebitternessabout "slavery"inShanghai.Meanwhile,apeaceoffer hasbeenmadeinMalayabytheChinesebandits andHo-ChiMinhisvisitinghismastersinMoscow andPeking.ItisnotablethattheBritishspurned theRedovertureinMalayawithcommendabledecision,for.thereismountingevidencethatthe resistanceisbeginningtocrumble.Onecouldwish theywouldbeasresolutewithRedChina.Ho's visitwouldappeartobeconnectedwiththesteady successofDiem'soffensiveagainsttherebelarmies inSouthVietnam.Adiversionarymovementin Laos,CambodiaorThailandmightbeindicated. Yao-tsung,spokesmanforthe fPatrioticMovement"forinderches,declares:"TheChinese agetheirownaffairs." towardsNewditioningbythe"Three-self Chinaandwouldhave theChineseChristians takethesameattitude."

R.:Itwasenoughfor missionariestodeclareCommunismincompatiblewith theChristianreligionfor theCommunistrulerstodeclarethemguiltyofdiscouragingpatriotism.

Asforthechargeofa hostileattitude"after China'sliberation"onecan onlyaskwhenwasChina liberated.AttheBandoeng Conference,onApril22, SirJohnKotelawala,PremierofCeylon,denounced Soviet"colonialism"and "imperialism,"andthe CommunistChinesePremier,ChouEn-lai,saidthat therewasnoneedtodiscussdifferentideologiesand thatdelegateshelddifferent viewsoftheword"colonialism."

Ofcoursetheydid.But fortheCommunistthose formsofcolonialismare wrongwhichdifferfrom thoseperpetratedinthe nameofCommunism.

Awelcomestrictlyinkeepingwiththerule St.Benedictgavehisfollowers1,400years agowasaccordedVincentMassey,Canada's GovernorGeneral,andhispartywhenthey visitedthefamousBenedictineAbbeyofSt. BenoitduLac.

Mr.Massey,payingan officialvisittoQuebecProvince'seasterntownships, expressedadesiretovisit themonasteryandthearrangementsweremade. WhentheGovernor'sparty arrived,theyweregreeted byDomJean-Francisde SalesVidal,wholooksafter guests,andwereescortedto themonastery'scourtof honour.

ThereAbbotDomOdule Sylvain,wearinghismitre andholdinghiscross,surroundedbyallmembersof thecommunity,receivedthe Governor-Generalandhis party. AfterwelcomingtheGovernor-General,theAbbot invitedhimtovisitthe chapel.TheretheGovernor kneltonaprie-dieuasthe Abbot,atthefootofthe altar,intonedaprayerfor theintentionoftheQueen.

Mr.Massey,firstnative ofCanadatobecomeGovernor-General,isamember oftheAnglicanChurch.He wasreceivedbyth&communityafterthevisittothe chapel.

URGENTNEEDFORACTION

Sincetoday'spriests,especiallythosewhohave thecareofsouls,areburdeneddailybyvariousand newdutiesoftheapostolateinsuchawaythatthey canhardlyattendtotherecitationoftheDivine Officewiththepropertranquillityofmind,some localOrdinarieshaveearnestlypetitionedtheHoly Seegraciouslytoprovidefortheremovalofsuch difficultyandatleasttoreducethegreatcomplexity oftherubricstoasimplerform.
