Thereis,too,anotherreasonwhydivorcemaybe rareinsuchinstancesforobviouslytheonepartner isnotlikelytoprovemoreadequateinasecond "marriage"thaninthefirst.Andthatkindof deficiencyisnotonethatcanbehushedupinthe muck-rakingthatispartoftheusualproceedingin a"dissolution"ofmarriage.Perhaps,too,thatis thereasonwhythehaplessmaleinsuchunionsis readytoconcealaresentmentwhichhecannotbut feelatthedemonstrationofhisownfailurein virility.Itwouldbeoddindeedifanmandidnot experienceshumiliationinthefaceoftheseunnatural experimentswhenthelackofchildrenmightjust aseffectivelybesuppliedthroughtheadoptionof orphans-withouttheriskofbeingbrandedillegitimate.
ETHICSARESTRAIGHTFORWARD
Asonemightexpecttheethicalconsiderationsof thisabominablepracticearetreatedverycavalierly inthearticletowhichIhavereferred.Itisstated attheoutsetthattheethicalproblemsinvolvedare "almostimpossiblycomplicated."Onthecontrary theyareincrediblysimple.Ifthe"donor"isnot thehusbandwehaveaplaincaseofadultery.If thehusbandisthe"donor"wehavemoralobliquy ofthesamekindasisinvolvedincontraceptive practices.
Theauthorhasanevenmorecuriousapproach tothematter,however.Heclaimsthat"these problems"onlyarisewhenamarriageisaboutto breakup.Clearlythemoralproblemisthereall thetimeandislikelyenoughthecauseofthe break-up.Itmaybeanunfairinference,butthe authorwouldseemtosuggestthattherealproblem isbeingfoundout,forsolongasthesecrecyis inviolatenoproblemarises,accordingtohim.
ItisconsolatorytolearnthattheChurchof Englandhasassertedthatartificialinsemination "involvesabreachofthemarriage."Itistobe regrettedthatthesameorganisationdidnottake anequallyclearstandinthemattersofbirthpreventionanddivorcewherethemoralissuesare equallyuncomplicated.Thearticleinquestion referstotheAnglicanpositionas"theChurch." Whetherthatusageimpliesafictionalunityof Christendomorwhetherheisreferringtotheonly Christianbodyworthyofnote,Icannotsay.But certainlynomentionismadeoftheCatholic teaching.

EDITORIAL THREEILLSOFMODERNTIMES
Wecanindeedagreewithourseparatedbrethren aboutthesorryspectacleofthemodernworldwith itslossoffaithanditsdenialofmoralgoodness,but wedonotsharetheirdespairatfindingawayout.Theremedyfortheworld'sillsisthesametodayas itwasinearlydaysofChristianity.Theworldmust dopenanceandrecognisetheKingdomofGodisat hand.Admittedlythehistoricalpositionisunique. NeverbeforeintheChurch'shistoryhasthevast bulkofmentobeconvertedtotheFaithbeenalso themultitudewhohavebeenperverted.Themodern worldcannotcometothevisionofGodwiththe freshwonderoftheoldpaganworld.Forthemenof ourtime,thoughtheyhaveceasedtohavethesubstanceoftheFaith,havelivedintheever-darkening penumbraofitstraditionsandtheirinfluenceon civilsociety.
Thechiefobstacletotheconversionofourworka-dayworldarespiritualpride,ignoranceand flabbinessofwill.Tothesimplestmanwithinthe Faithitispatentthathumansocietyisinrapid decline.Butthemodern"intellectuals"sofarfrom recognisingtheuniversaldecay,pratewildlyabout theonwardrushofprogress,theapotheosisofman andhiscompleteself-sufficiency.Sofarffomfindinghumilityoratleastchagrinintheirdecadence, theyhavethecuriousyetterribleself-exaltationand irrationalhopewhichsymptomisesthespiritual diseasecalledpride.Butthepeopleatlargearenot concernedwiththedenialofsupernaturaltruthor moralstandards.Theyaresheerlyunawareoftheir existence,theircertainty,andtheirefficacy.They labourinthedarkcloudofignorance.

Itisthemeresttruism,butincontestableand startling,thatFaithandreasonstandorfalltogether.IthasbeentheChurch'sexperiencethat philosophywasthehand-maidenoftheology.When menceasedtoacceptthemoralauthorityofthe Church,theyverypresentlycametolosegripof tilenaturalfundamentalsofthought.Philosophy wentoverboardwiththeology.Sothatthemodern worlddoesnotevenattempttoexplainthingsby theirultimatecauses.Inthenaturalorderthe modernworldisguiltyoftheworstkindofignorance-superficiality.
Butthereisathirdelementstandingbetweenthe bleaknessofmodernlifeandtheCityofGod.Itis thealmostuniversalconditionofmoralflabbiness. Itisnotaseparatedisease,butisintimatelylinked withthelossofFaith.Thescepticsofthelastcenturyprofessedthattherewasnointerdependence betweenreligiousbeliefandmorals.Theyignored tilefactthatthenaturallawisDivinelaw,andthat tilemoralconductoflifeislargelyconditionedbythe weightofsanctionsbehindit.
Naturalreligionhasinfactprovedinsufficient becauseofthewarpinhumannatureleftbyoriginal sin,butalsobecauseofthelackofsufficientmotive formoralgoodness.Couldthemodernworldbe broughttoaccepttheChristianwayoflifeagain therewouldyetbethefurtherstruggletomakeit practicallyeffective.Forthemodernworldis diseasedinthewillperhapsevenmorethaninthe intellect.Andthisagainisacommonfactorin spiritualpride-thatithasnofoundationinreality. FromthisterriblesloughofthespirittheCatholic Churchalonecanraisetheworld.Itisintheworld buttheworldknowsitnot.
Itisunfortunatethatthewriterofthearticle shouldhaveendorsedScandinavianlegislationin favouroftest-tubebabiesas"sensibleandlogical." FortheScandinaviannationsarenotnotably attachedtoChristianityandarecentreportontile moraltoneofthatpartoftheworldwhichappeared in"Time"couldbereadonlywithdisgust.
Moreover,itissurelyaprematureconclusionthat "artificialinsemination"hascometostay.Wemay beverygratefulthatthequestionof"staying" doesnotarisebecausetheabominationhasnot "arrived"toanynotableextentandtheresolute anticipationofChristianswhoresentmenbeing treatedlikestudstockmaywellpreventitsintroduction.

Mr.Follereau,anativeof France,hasfoughtleprosy for20years,hastravelled nearly400,000milestodo soandhasdistributedmore thanhalfabillionfrancs tohospitalsandresearch institutesdevotedtothe samepurpose.

Thegreateststresswas placedbyMr.Follereauon theneedofeliminatingall fearofcontagionamong non-lepers,sincethisisthe realreasonforthecruel ostracisminflictedonlepers.

Mr.Follereaunotedthat inJune,1951,only2,261 leperscamefortreatmentin FrenchEquatorialAfrica.
