Thenewexecutivewill helptheworkofestablishingtheY.C.W.inthelarger countrytownsofthethree diocesesofPerth,Geraldton andSunburytoproceed smoothlyandwiththegrace ofGodquickly.

Sofar,Geraldton,Kalgoorlie.Bunbury,Collie andBridgetownaretheonly countrytownswitha Y.C.W.group.

Otherimportantdecisions oftheconferencewere:Toholdapublicrallyon the"SanctityofMarriage" tocounteractfalseviews publishedinrecentdiscussionsondivorcebyconsent.

ToasktheNational executivetoexamine,ona nationalscale,thevalueof raisingtheschoolleaving age. ToarrangetalkswarningyoungNationalService traineesofcamplifedangersearlyineachintakethiswouldmakesurethat allCatholictraineeswould beforewarned.Previously traineesfromthecountry couldnotattendmetropolitanlectures.

Generallyspeakingthe conferencewasafirst-class success-someevenacclaimingitasthebestyet.

Besidestheenthusiasm generatedbysuchagathering,delegatesfromdifferent brancheslearnsomethingof theproblemsandachievementsofotherbranches.

Themostremarkable achievementnotedwas Collie'sworkinassimilating andhelpingitslargeNew Australianpopulation.

MostlyItalians,these NewAustralianswereacceptedintotheCollie branch,wereprovidedwith socialeveningstohelpthem settleinandevenhadtheir ownY.C.W.soccerclub.

Butthemostimportant pointwasthatallthese moveshelpedthenewar-

rivalstokeepuptheirFaith whichinsomanyother partsofthecountrythey fallawayfrombecause theyarenotaccepted.

OneofthetwoStatefinalists,chosen ataconcertintheCapitolTheatreonJune 2,intheA.B.C.Concertocompetitionwas MissJosephineMcKimmie,whowonthe instrumentalsection. A19-year-oldpianist, MissMcKimmiewonher awardintheplayingof Dohnanyi's"Variationson aNurseryTheme."Theadjudicatorsremarkedon her"goodimaginationand veryfinefingers."

MissMcKimmienowbecomeseligibletocompete inthegrandfinalsofthe competitionwhichwillbe decidedinMelbournenext month.

DaughterofMr.andthe lateMr.McKimmie,of41 Murray-st.,Bayswater,Miss McKimmiereceivedher earlymusicaltrainingfrom theSistersofMercyattheir Bayswaterconventandat SantaMariaCollege.At presentsheisstudyingwith awell-knownPerth musician.

Asteel-framedgymnasiumisnearingcompletion andmanynewfacilitiesand convenienceshavebeen addedtothegroundsofthe college.Theplayingarea isenlargedandaddedsportingfacilitieshavebeenlaid outonanadjoiningpropertybelongingtothecollege.

Theadministratorofthe Kalgoorlieparish,theV. Rev.J.O'Sullivan,deploredthefactthat,whileCatholiceschoolsreceivedno aidfromtheStatesincethe "dismalAct"of1895disendowedprivateschools, CatholicsinAustraliahad theirpursesdrainedfor taxespayingforStateeducationcosts.

Thecollegeprincipal, Bro.Manion,outlinedthe historyofthecollegeand itsprincipals.Hepaida specialtributetoBro.A. Ryan,whobuiltupanimpressiverecordduringhis 20-yearperiodatthecollege,andBro.P.Smith, whohasspent18yearshere andisstillperforminggreat workforCatholiceducation ontheGoldfields.

TheMinisterforRailHisGrace,addressingaways,Mr.Styants,whoregatheringofover800presentedtheStateGovpeople,saidthattheim-ernmentattheopening, provementshadbeenpraisedtheampleprovision urgentlyneeded.Earlyforsportandrecreationin plansfortheworkhadhadconjunctionwitheducationtobeshelvedinthewaralfacilities. yearsandthepost-warre-Otherspeakersincluded strictionsonbuilding. Forty-threepersonswho areengagedtobemarried attendedtheinauguration ofthePre-CanaConference onFridaylast. Theyheardatalkfrom theRev.J.Bourkeonthe spiritualaspectofmarriage. Mr.W.O'Grady,aformer Y.C.W.leader,spokeon loveandhappinessinmarriage. Thecoursewillberesumedtomorrownight, June17,whentheRev.J. Depiazziwilloutlinechurch andcivillawrelatingto marriage,andMr.H.Child willspeakabouteconomic preparationformarriage. Finallecturesofthe coursewillbegivenon Friday,June24,andSunday,June26.

OnSunday,June12,HisLordshipthe BishopofBunbury,theMostRev.L.J. Goody,officiallyinaugurated,blessedand openedthenewChristianBrothers'College inCollie.

Thecollegeconsistsof threeclassrooms,laboratory fullyequipped,handsome entrancehallandanannexe forwoodworkandtechnical subjects.

BishopGoodysaidhe hopedthecollegewould providethreethingsfor Collieintheyearstocome:

Firstly,toeducateanever increasingnumberofCollie boystobeuseful,cultivated, andtrulyChristianmen.

Secondly,toactbyexampleonthemanynon-

Catholicboysandmenwho havebeendeprivedofany effectivereligioustraining whileatschoolandwereso tragicallyill-equipped morallyandspirituallyby theotherwiseexcellentinstructionwhichtheygotat theschoolsoftheState.

Andthirdlythat,inthe wellknowntraditionofthe ChristianBrothers,they wouldshowtheirequals andinduecoursetheir eldershowtoplayfootball, winningoften,beingbeaten sometimes,butalways "playingthegame."

SecondApparitionAlFatima

Onceagain,ontheapproachofthe FatimaApparitions'anniversary,theSundayafterthe13thofeachmonth,fromMay toOctober,willbeobservedatPalmyraby aprocessionandcrowningofthebeautiful carvedstatueofOurLadyofFatima.

Onesuchceremonyhas alreadytakenplaceduring May.Averywellattended processionwithbannersleft thechurchrecitingthe Rosaryandsinginghymns.

Atthesametimethereappearstoexistapopular sentimentthatthetwomenrecentlysentencedto imprisonmentbytheFederalParliamentmighthave beendealtwithquiteadequatelybytheordinary processesoflaw--andevenmorerigorously punished.

EventhoughtheAustralianconstitutionandthe centuries-oldprecedentoftheBritishHouseof Commonsreinforcetheactiontakenbyourown government,Icannotbutfeelitwasamistaketo haveusedtheprocedurewhenother,moreequitable meansofredressingwrongwereavailable.

JUSTICEDOESNOTAPPEAR

Therearefeaturesoftheparliamentaryprocedure whichcutacrossthenormaljuridicalformstowhich weareaccustomedandwhich,wefeel,makeinthe roughforequaljusticeforall.Fitzpatrickand Browne,whiletheywereheardbytheParliamentaryPrivilegesCommittee,werejudgedbyquite anothtrbody.TheywerecalledtotheBarofthe House,nottodefendthemselves-fortheyhad alreadybeenjudgedguilty-buttoreceivesentence. Theywerenotaffordedthefacilitiesofcounseland cross-examinationofwhichthemeanestoffender mayavail.Theywere,moreover,judgedand punishedbythebodyagainstwhichtheyhad offended.Andtheyhavenorightofappeal.

Allthisishighlyunsatisfactory,forwhilejustice mayhavebeendone,tomanyitmaynotappearto havebeendone.Itseemstomethatonlysome extraordinaryreasoncouldjustifyevokingthis specialanachronisticlegalform,soforeigntonormal judicialmethodsandsoredolentoftheStarChamberenormitiesofthepast.Werethereanyspecial circumstancesintheBankstowncasewhichwould warrantsuchundesirabletacticsashavebeenemployed?Thereisnomentionofanysuchinthe PrimeMinister'slong,technicalexplanation.

Dr.Evatt,recognisedasalegalluminary,had nothingtosayofthataspectofthematter,although hehasindulgedinanumberofrashandridiculous after-thoughts.Itmaybethatrecoursetolawin itsusualformswouldhavevindicatedMr.Morgan inhispersonalhonourandhisprivatecapacity.But wouldsuchactionhavevindicatedMr.Morgan, M.H.R.,inhisofficialstatusasamemberofthe supremelegislativeorganoftheCommonwealth?

NOTHINGFORPONTIFICALMAN

Alltherepublicanformsofgovernment,insupersedingmonarchyanddiscardingtheexternaltrappingsofthathistoricalinstitution,tookanuncalculatedrisk.Thekinghadasacerdotalcharacter impressedonthepopularmindbysacramental externals.Republicansnotonlychangedtheform ofgovernmentbutsecularisedtheconceptofthe legislativeorder.Ittoreoffacrownthatwassomethingofamitre,anditcouldoffernosubstitutein thepopularmindforPontificalMan.

Thatisnotthewholeexplanationofthephenonenonofthelossofprestigeandevenofrespect amongourpoliticalleadersincommonestimation. Fortheprogressivesecularisationoflife.divorcing asitdoesmaninhispublicactsfromallspiritual andmoralconsiderations,putsanimpossiblepropositiontosociety.Itinvokesamoralauthorityfor itsoriginsandpowers,yetwilfullyandconsistently ignoresthemoralorder.

Forthemoralauthorityofthataugustbodyisat lowebb.ButiftheBankstownepisodewasentered uponwithanynotionofassertingparliamentary authority,itwas,inmyopinion,apoorly-judged occasion.Themereexerciseofauthorityinpractical affairs,howevergreatandsweeping,willnotsolve whatisoneofthegreatestcrisesofourtime.

CITIZENSHAVEPRIVILEGES,TOO

Itisnotpowerthatneedsinsistence-wehave hadasurfeitofthatfromthetotalitarianStates. Itisthemoralbasisofpoliticalauthoritythatneeds plugginganditwillbefoundaverydifficultundertakingindeedinasocietywhichhasbeendeliberatelysecularised.Forexample.astartshouldbe madeintheschools.Somewillsaythatthat inaugurationwasmadelongsincewiththeteaching ofcivics.Ifthatisso,Icanonlyremarkuponits conspicuousfailure.

Whathastobetaughtisthatalltemporalpower comesfromGod.thatthevoiceofthepeopleisthe voiceofGodinthatthefreechoiceofanationin theselectionofitsrulersisbackedbydivinesanction,thatrulersmustexercisetheirpowersubject todivinelaw.Buthowthatistobetaughtinthe schoolsoftheState,Ihavenoidea.Fortherethe notionofGodwouldringasstrangelyasmention ofthedodo.

ButtoreverttotheBankstownaffair.Ifparliamentisintentuponpreservingitsprivileges,it oughttohaveaneye,too,toitsresponsibilities.If

theo'dinarycitizenmaynottalkinaslanderous andintimidatoryfashionofmenintheirpolitical capacities,neithermustpoliticiansbepermitted undercoverofprivilegetomakeslanderousattacks oncitizenswhohavenoredress.Henceitwasnot reassuringtohearMr.Caldwellwaxingon"rats" and"illiteratelouts."

Thereisalltoomuchofthatkindofgutter languageinCanberra.Itneedstobecurbed.There isapressingcaseformoderationandtemperance inparliamentarytalk.Vituperationisavirusthat breeds-itbegetsretaliation.Ifthepoliticianswere moresweetlyreasonable,perhapstherewouldbe lessoccasiontobreachtheirprivileges.

DuringthepastweekthecrisisbetweenChurch andStateintheArgentine,launchedbydictator PeronlastNovember,hasmountedinintensity.It isidleforPerontoprotestthathehasnointention ofharmingtheChurchwheneverylegislativeact ofhisCongressofstoogeshasbeenlikeagauntlet flunginthefaceofCatholicism.

Whatisbeingfoughtoutinthatimportantcountry ofLatinAmericanisnonewissue-ithasbeen thrashedoutathousandtimesinthebloodofChristians.Itisthequestionofwhetherthetemporal

TheHeartofOurDivineLordwhichtheChurch proposes,inaparticularmannerduringthemonth" ofJune,andinthefeastoftheSacredHeart tomorrow,asanobjectofadoration,symbolisesthe infinitelovewhichChristtheRedeemerbears towardsallmankind,forwhosesalvationHisSacred HeartwaspiercedonCalvary.Butthroughthe extraordinaryrevelationsmadetoSt.Margaret MaryAlacoqueinthe17thcentury,thegenerallove whichallChristiansmustbeartowardsChristwas Ovenaspecialdirectionandanewstimulation. Sincethenatureofsupernaturalcharityisnot merelyaffectivebutalsopractical,itwasdemanded bytheSacredHeartthatreparationforsinshould bemadeasthepragmatictestofgenuineloveand devotion.Inthiswasnoinnovationofdoctrine,for theChurchhasalwaysmaintainedthatevenafter theremissionofsin,satisfactionisstillowingtothe justiceofGod.Reparationisanintegralelement ofContrition,andonethatisrecognisedintheconfessionalbytheimpositionofanominalpenance.

ThedemandswhichtheSacredHeartmadeupon St.MargaretMaryanddesiredhertopropagate throughouttheworld,were,ofcourse,primarily personal.Itisthebasichumilitythatamanshould acknowledgehisplaceincreationasacreature. utterlydependentuponGodforallthatheisand has.Fromthisarisesthemaliceofsinthata creatureboundtotallytofulfilthelawofhisCreator isyet(byDivineprivilege)freetodisobey.When manpreferssomeothercreatureabovehisCreator, sinentersinandtheDivineJusticeisoutraged.Yet Godisinfinitelyforgivingandinfinitelypatienthi Hisforgiveness.ThebruisedreedHeshallnot break,northesmokingflaxextinguish.Hisredemptionisplenteous,andfortheCatholicveryeasyof accessforthecontriteheart.Buttheeffectsofsin donotordinarilyendintheconfessional,butin purgatory.

Inadditiontothisprimarytaskofreparationfor personalsin,OurLordhaslaiduponthefaithful somethingofHisownvicariousmissionofatoning toGodforthesinsofothers.Itisplainthatmen whohaveneverknownthefulnessofGod'srevelationareyetboundbytheNaturalLaw,foritisthe conditionoftheirbeing.Thesemen,too,offend God,andviolatetheirnaturalconsciences.But theylackvitalmeansofrepentance.Itispartofthe missionoftheChurchtoatonetotheJusticeofGod foralloutragesagainsttheDivineMajestyAnd theChurch,throughtheinfiniteWisdomofGod,has beenleftthemeanswherebymenmaymakenot onlysatisfaction,butsatisfactionofinfinitemerit. ThatisoneofthechiefendsforwhichtheMassis offered.Wehavethemeans;itisforustoapply themthattheJusticeofGodbesatisfiedandthe DivineWrathwardedofffromtheworld.

Mr.Menziesomittedavital elementinhisexplanation powermayusurpasuperiorityoverthespiritual power.Ithasbeenfoughtandresolvedinvery recenttimesinItalyandGermanyandPeronwould beawisemanifheponderedhowtheChurch, lackingthegreatinstrumentsofphysicalforce,has yetemergedtriumphant.SwastikaandFascesare dust,buttheCrossisyetheldradiantlyaloft.

QUAINTSTYLEOFPURIFICATION

InthecaseofPeron,theentirehistoryofhis recentdealingswiththeChurchrepeatstheold, familiarpattern.Thereisnoquarrelatallinsubstance.Itisallaquestionofpretextstoeliminate whatheseeswillbethemajor,andperhapsthe sole,obstacletohisinordinatedesireforpower.The pretextistheancientonethattheChurch"interferes"inpoliticalissues.He,likesomeofourown politicians,woulddearlylovetobeabletoshutup theChurchinthesacristy.

TheChurchbeinguniversalinseveralsensesmust inevitablyconflictwithamanwhoaspirestothe totalcontrolandsubjugationoftheentirenature ofallhissubjects.Forithasadivinemandate whichtranscendsallmerehumanambition.And thatitwillprosecutewhateverthecostinbloodand tearsandsweat.Moreover,ithasadivinepromise ofsuccesswhereasthetyranthasonlytheprospect ofinevitablefailure.

ItiscuriousthatthegroundonwhichPeronhas chosentofightisthatonwhichtheChurchhasbeen pre-eminentlythepioneer-thesocialquestion.If Peronnowgenuinelyaspirestohavehisunionsfree, heoughtnotforgetthegreatdebtheandtheworld owestothelineofPopesduringthepast100years whohavefoughtunremittinglyfortherightof association.But,ofcourse,Perondoesnotwantfree Continuedfootnextcolumn.

Lateron,anotherofOurPredecessors,theimmortalLeoXIII,inhisEncyclical,"Quodapostolici muneris,"definedCommunismas"thefatalplague whichinsinuatesitselfintotheverymarrowof humansocietyonlytobringaboutitsruin."With clearintentionhepointedoutthattheatheistic movementsexistingamongthemassesofthe MachineAgehadtheirorigininthatschoolof philosophywhichforcenturieshadsoughttodivorce sciencefromthelifeoftheFaithandoftheChurch.

ACTSOFPRESENTPONTIFICATE

DuringOurPontificateWe,too,havefrequently andwithurgentinsistencedenouncedthecurrent trendtoatheismwhichisalarminglyontheincrease. In1924,whenourrelief-missionreturnedfromthe SovietUnion,wecondemnedCommunismina specialAllocutionwhichweaddressedtothewhole world.InourEncyclicals,"MiserentissimusRedemptor,""QuadragesimoAnno,""CaritateChristi," "Acerbaanimi,""DilectissimaNobis,"weraiseda solemnprotestagainstthepersecutionunleashedin Russia,inMexico,andnowinSpain.

OurtwoAllocutionsoflastyear,thefirstonthe occasionoftheopeningoftheInternationalCatholic PressExposition,andthesecondduringOuraudience totheSpanishrefugees,alongwithOurmessageof lastChristmas,haveevokedaworld-wideecho whichisnotyetspent.

Infact,themostpersistentenemiesoftheChurch, whofromMoscowaredirectingthestruggleagainst Christiancivilisation,themselvesbearwitness,by theirunceasingattacksinwordandact,thateven tothishourthePapacyhascontinuedfaithfullyto protectthesanctuaryoftheChristianreligion,and thatithascalledpublicattentiontotheperilsof Communismmorefrequentlyandmoreeffectively thananyotherpublicauthorityonearth.

NEEDOFANOTHERSOLEMNPRONOUNCEMENT

Toourgreatsatisfaction,venerablebrethren,you have,bymeansofindividualandevenjointpastoral Letters,accuratelytransmittedandexplainedtothe faithfultheseadmonitions.YetdespiteOurfrequent andpaternalwarningstheperilonlygrowsgreater fromdaytoday,becauseofthepressureexertedby cleveragitators.ThereforeWebelieveittobeOur dutytoraiseOurvoiceoncemore,inastillmore solemnmissive,inaccordwiththetraditionofthis ApostolicSee,theTeacherofTruth,andinaccord withthedesireofthewholeCatholicworld,which makestheappearanceofsuchadocumentbut natural.

Inspiteoftheunfolding,inincreasingintensity,ofthepracticalaimsofCommunism, duringthesepost-waryears,currentpolitical turmoilinthiscountryhasestablishedbeyond doubtthattheinnernatureofthiscosmic tyrannyisscarcelyapprehended,evenbysome Catholics.

Itwillbeimpossibleeffectivelytostemthe evilsofMarxismifitsbasicphilosophyand intentionsarenotrealised.Sincethemost penetratinganalysisevermadeofCommunism wasthatofPopePiusXIinhismemorable encyclical,"DiviniRedemptoris,"wepropose publishingtheentiredocumentoveraperiod ofsixweeks.Thefirstsectionisgivenbelow. sorryconfirmationfromthespectacleofthebitter fruitsofsubversiveideas,whichWeforesawand foretold,andwhichareinfactmultiplyingfearfully inthecountriesalreadystricken,orthreatening everyothercountryoftheworld.

HenceWewishtoexposedoncemoreinabrief synthesistheprinciplesofatheisticCommunismas theyaremanifestedchieflyinBolshevism.Wewish alsotoindicateitsmethodofactionandtocontrast withitsfalseprinciplesthecleardoctrineofthe Church,inordertoinculcateanewandwithgreater insistencethemeansbywhichtheChristiancivilisation,thetrue"civitashumana,"canbesavedfrom thesatanicscourge,andnotmerelysaved,butbetter developedforthewell-beingofhumansociety.

II-CommunisminTheoryandPractice-Doctrine FALSEIDEAL

TheCommunismoftoday,moreemphatically thansimilarmovementsinthepast,concealsinitself afalsemessianicidea.Apseudo-idealofjustice,of equalityandfraternityinlabourimpregnatesallits doctrineandactivitywithadeceptivemysticism. whichcommunicatesazealousandcontagious enthusiasmtothemultitudesentrappedbydelusive promises.Thisisespeciallytrueinanagelikeours. whenunusualmiseryhasresultedfromtheunequal distributionofthegoodsofthisworld.

Thispseudo-idealisevenboastfullyadvancedas ifitwereresponsibleforacertaineconomicprogress. Asamatteroffact,whensuchprogressisatallreal, itstruecausesarequitedifferent,asforinstancethe intensificationofindustrialismincountrieswhich wereformerlyalmostwithoutit,theexploitation ofimmensenaturalresources,andtheuseofthe mostbrutalmethodstoinsuretheachievementof giganticprojectswithaminimumofexpense.

MARXISTEVOLUTIONARYMATERIALISM

ThedoctrineofmodernCommunism,whichis oftenconcealedunderthemostseductivetrappings, isinsubstancebasedontheprinciplesofdialectical andhistoricalmaterialismpreviouslyadvocatedby Marx,ofwhichthetheoriciansofBolshevismclaim topossesstheonlygenuineinterpretation.Accordingtothisdoctrinethereisintheworldonlyone

Inman'srelationswithotherindividuals,besides, Communistsholdtheprincipleofabsoluteequality, rejectingallhierarchyanddivinely-constituted authority,includingtheauthorityofparents.What mencallauthorityandsubordinationisderived fromthecommunityasitsfirstandonlyfont.Nor istheindividualgrantedanypropertyrightsover materialgoodsorthemeansofproduction,for inasmuchasthesearethesourceoffurtherwealth, theirpossessionwouldgiveonemanpowerover another.Preciselyonthisscore,allformsofprivate propertymustbeeradicated,fortheyareatthe originofalleconomicenslavement.

Refusingtohumanlifeanysacredorspiritual character,suchadoctrinelogicallymakesofmarriageandthefamilyapurelyartificialandcivil institution,theoutcomeofaspecificeconomic system.Thereexistsnomatrimonialbondofa juridico-moralnaturethatisnotsubjecttothewhim oftheindividualorofthecollectivity.Naturally, therefore,thenotionofanindissolublemarriage-tie isscouted.

Communismisparticularlycharacterisedbythe rejectionofanylinkthatbindswomantothefamily andthehome,andheremancipationisproclaimed asabasicprinciple.Sheiswithdrawnfromthe familyandthecareofherchildren,tobethrust insteadintopubliclifeandcollectiveproduction underthesameconditionsasman.Thecareofthe homeandchildrenthendevolvesuponthecollectivity.Finally,therightofeducationisdeniedto parents,foritisconceivedastheexclusiveprerogativeofthecommunity,inwhosenameandbywhose mandatealoneparentsmayexercisethisright.

COMMUNISTSOCIETY

Whatwouldbetheconditionofahumansociety basedonsuchmaterialistictenets?Itwouldbea collectivitywithnootherhierarchythanthatofthe economicsystem.Itwouldhaveonlyonemission: theproductionofmaterialthingsbymeansofcollectivelabour,sothatthegoodsofthisworldmight beenjoyedinaparadisewhereeachwould"give accordingtohispowers"andwould"receiveaccordingtohisneeds."

Communismrecognisesinthecollectivitythe right,orrather,unlimiteddiscretion,todraftindividualsforthelabourofthecollectivitywithno regardfortheirpersonalwelfare;sothateven violencecouldbelegitimatelyexercisedtodragoon therecalcitrantagainsttheirwills.IntheCommunisticcommonwealthmoralityandlawwouldbe nothingbutaderivationoftheexistingeconomic order,purelyearthlyinoriginandunstablein character.Inaword,theCommunistsclaimto inaugurateaneweraandanewcivilisationwhich istheresultofblindevolutionaryforcesculminating inahumanitywithoutGod.

Whenallmenhavefinallyacquiredthecollectivist mentalityinthisUtopiaofareallyclasslesssociety, thepoliticalState,whichisnowconceivedbyCommunistsmerelyastheinstrumentbywhichthe proletariatisoppressedbythecapitalists,willhave lostallreasonforitsexistenceandwill"wither away."However,untilthathappyconsummation isrealised,theStateandthepowersoftheState furnishCommunismwiththemostefficaciousand mostextensivemeansfortheachievementofits goal. Such,venerablebrethren,isthenewgospelwhich bolshevisticandatheisticCommunismoffersthe worldasthegladtidingsofdeliveranceandsalvation!Itisasystemfulloferrorsandsophisms.Itis inoppositionbothtoreasonandtodivineRevelation. In1910hewonascholarshiptotheTerraceCollege wherehistalentssecured forhimajuniorgovernmentexhibitionin1912and aseniorexhibitionin1913.

A brilliantscholastic careerwascrownedwhen hesatandpassedinthefirst LeavingCertificateexaminationsconductedbythe UniversityofW.A.in1914.

Mr.Farmerfolloweda familytraditioninhisinterestinchurchaffairsdur-Mr.Farmer'shealthbeingthepast20years.Hegantodeclinein1947.In servedasanaltarboyinSt.Aprilofthisyearhewas Joseph'sChurch,Subiaco,takenseriouslyillandreforeightyears.Inthismainedinhospitaluntilthe parishhereceivedhisfirstendofMay.Hereturned HolyCommunionandwas Confirmed.

Oneofdeceased'smost pleasingcharacteristicswas hisdevotiontohisfamily.

Afterthedeathofhisfather andmotherhecaredforhis mother'stwosistersuntil theirdecease.Astrongbond withhisbrotherJackand familyexistedtotheend.

Mr.Farmer'sfirstloyalty wasunmistakablytoGod, hissecondtohisfamily; thenfollowedhiscountry andhisemployer.Hewas generoustoafaultand caredlessforhisownwelfarethanforthatofothers.

During27yearsoffaith-ful,efficientserviceas accountant,hewaslatterly appointedsecretaryanda director.

Hewasoutstandinginhis workforSt.Joachim's parish,VictoriaPark,where hewasactiveintheLegion ofMary.Formanyyears hewassecretaryofthe Hiberniansthereandheld manyexecutivepositionson thebranchcouncilofthe HolyNameSociety.

OnFriday,May27,theSistersandthose undertheircareatNazarethHouse,Geraldton,welcomedtheSuperiorGeneralof theNazarethSisters,Rev.MotherEmmanuel Marywho,incompanywithRev.Mother Donatus,iscarryingoutvisitationofall branchhousesconductedbytheNazareth Sisters.

Rev.MotherEmmanuel andRev.MotherDonatus arebothwellremembered inGeraldton,wherepriorto returningtoNazareth House,Hammersmith,London,theyhadbeenfoundationmembersoftheGeraldtonCommunity.

Rev.MotherEmmanuel Mary,whoisnowSuperior GeneraloftheNazareth Sisters,firstcametoTardun withthefirstgroupof migrantchildrenin1938.

Sheremainedthereuntil 1941,whenNazarethHouse, Geraldton,wasopened. Latershespentsometime intheEasternStatesbefore returningtoEnglandin 1945.

SixyearslatersherevisitedallNazarethHouses inAmerica,NewZealand andAustralia.Onthis,her thirdvisittoAustralia,she isaccompaniedbyRev. MotherDonatus,whowas alsooneofthefoundation SistersinGeraldton.

AfterleavingGeraldton, Rev.MotherDonatusbecamefirstMotherSuperior ofthenewlyestablished NazarethHouse,Hobart.

In1942herelievedthe generalsecretary,Mr.Mark Foley,whowasengagedin militaryduties.Mr.Foley saidrecentlythatduring thewaritwasverydifficult tokeeptheHolyNameSocietygoing,andthatitwas largelyduetoMr.Farmer's hardworkthatthesociety waskeptonthemap.

In1946deceasedrelinquishedthesecretaryship andwaselectedvice-president,apositionwhichhe occupiedtilldeath.He actedalsoformanyyears asaveryefficientpress correspondent
