OnSundayevening.May 29,thecongregationfilled thechurchtotakepartin thisceremonywhichbegan withtherecitationofthe Rosarybeforethestatueof OurLady,placedinthe sanctuaryonabeautiful adorneddais. Theoccasionalsermon waspreachedbytheRt. Rev.Mgr.J.T.McMahon, who,recallingthatitwas PentecostDay,spokeofthe workofsanctificationof theHolyGhostinthe Church,withspecialreferencestotheIncarnationand theBlessedVirgin'spartin it.

ForaCatholicwhohas anintelligentgraspofthe implicationsofhisfaith,the combinedstatementofthe Bishopsisadocumentthat calls,notforquestioning'or criticism.butforsubmissionandco-operation.

Inthepresentinstance,Catholicacquiescencein theProtestantobservanceofFoundationDayleaves thefieldclearfortheclaimthatthepioneersofthis StatenumberednoCatholicsamongthem,orifthey did,thattheyarequiteunworthyofthetributesof theirposterity.Suchisnotthecase,forsomeof ourpioneerslikeBishopSalvadoareheldinhonourablememorybyallcitizens.

ThegreatesteventinWestAustralianhistoryfor usmustbethecelebrationbyFatherJoostensof thefirstMassatAlbany.Thataloneisworthyof annualcommemoration,notofanexclusivecharacter butofsomeproud,publicdemonstration.The namesofthegoodpeopleofGuildfordpetitioning forapriestareknowntousanddeservetobeinscribedinourannalsandhonouredinopenmanifestations.

Noapologynorhintofitisrequiredforadverting againandagaintothefateoftheheroicpeopleof Vietnam.Itwasgoodtonotethat,throughBritish initiative,thetruceperiodforthehalf-million refugeesinNorthVietnamwhowishtogosouthhas beenextendeduntilJune18.Itwouldbebetter ifwecouldhearofsomeeffectiveinternational controltoensurethattherefugeeswillbefreeto leave.

Actuallyitdoesn'tmatteragreatdealtoHo-ChiMinhortotheSovietiftheylose500,000ofpopulation.AtthemomentRussiaisplayingtheroleof thebenevolentuncleanditmaysuithisbookif throughseeminggenerosityhemayensureafew "neutral"AsiannationsontheIndianmodel. Moreover,amerehalf-millionisnotgoingto alterthevotingpowerasbetweenNorthandSouth whenelectiontimeconiesinJulyofnextyear.The Northstillhasamajorityofsomefourmillionsand theVietminhwillseetoitthattheyvotetheparty tickettoaman.

WhentheGenevaPactwassignedtheVietnam delegatewerenotallowedeventospeakexcept throughtheFrench.whoignoredthem.Thecontemptwascarriedalittletoofar.fortheparties concernedwerenotaskedtosigntheagreementand arethereforenotboundbyit.

Itisquitecertainthattheanti-CommunistSouth couldnotacceptanelectoraltestnextyear.Noone canreasonablybeaskedtoacceptacertainCommunistdominationatanytime.ButDiem,witha persistenceandcouragethatisquiteextraordinary, isgraduallywearingdowntherebelsectsandmay withinreasonabletimebeabletoestablishastable government.

ButtheFrenchwiththeirviciouscreature,Bao Dai,continuetofomenttroubleforDiem,forVietnamandforworldpeaceforthatmatter.Toavoid anopenbreachwiththecuriousambitioninParis to"savetheFrenchpresence"inbothhalvesof VietnamtheAmericansagreedtotheirdesireto putBaoDaibackonhisimperialthrone.But nobodyinthecountrywantsthatcorruptrubberstamp.HeismostpopularontheRiveiraandshould beleftthere.

ItisoddtonotehowtheFrenchhavetornaleaf fromtheBritishmanual,"HowtoPlayBallwith Communists."Itwouldappearthatthemiraculous secretofthisinscrutableriddleliesinthesacred word,Trade.SotheFrenchhandedovertotheReds thevaluableTonkingcoalminesforthemere promise-andaCommunistoneatthat-ofamillion tonsofcoalinthesweetbyandbye.

JustastheFrenchfailedtobeattheVietminhin thefieldtheywillnotsucceedinmakingahorse dealinthemarket.TheSovietrecentlyboastedof theformulationofeconmicplans"fromPekingto Berlin."ButtheywillallbeontheReds'terms andinterestcomeshighinthatmarket.

Dr.Evatt(andthosefollowersofhiswhousea ballandsocketforthecervicaljointofthevertebrae)havenomeansofsubduingMarxismwithin theirownranksandevenlessinthewayofideas forcontainingthemenaceabroad.Theyopposethe sendingofAustraliantroopstoMalayaandthey wantustotrustthosedearChinamenwhohave showntheirdeterminationforpeacesostrikingly inMalaya,KoreaandIndo-China.

ItisgenuinelydepressingtoheartheradiobroadcastsfromCanberraandtoreadtheHansardreports ofthedebateonforeignpolicythere.IfitisdistressingtohearEvatt-typeLabouritesopposingwhat isclearlytheonlypossiblycourseofactionforthis countryifitwantstosurvive,itisexasperating beyondallmeasuretohearandreadthepiffling reasonsfortheirobstructionism.
