Possiblybecauseofhisawarenessthatthepeople ofVictoriamightjustpossiblyresenttheamazinglycavaliertreatmentthattheFederalexecutiveofthe A.L.P.handedtheconstitutionally-electedexecutive ofVictoria(inorderto"frame"theHobartConferencewiththedictatorially-appointed"new" executive),Dr.Evattthrewinallthebiggunsat hisdisposal-inparticulartheLeftbarrels.

Buthereagaintherehadtoberiskedthepossible resentmentofapeoplewhofelttheywereintelligent enoughtoformtheirownpoliticaljudgmentwithout theintrusionofthemanwhosechieftitletofame hadbeenhisprovedabilityatcausingdissension anddisunity.Soitturnedout,theofficialLabour Partywasdecisivelyrejectedbytheelectorsand thedissentientgroupswerevirtuallyextingushed.

WHATVICTORIATHOUGHTOFEVATT

Now,Dr.Evatt'sreactiontothatlossiscurious tonote.The"oneresultalreadyachieved"was. accordingtohim,the"destructionoftheBarryColeman-McManusgroup."Onewouldrather gatherfromDr.Evatt'sremarksthattheelection hadnotbeenfoughtagainsttheLiberalCountry Partybutagainstthesplinterelementsinopposition tohimandhispolicies.Ifthepollproveditdid notwantthosewhohaddisagreedwithDr.Evatt, itprovedequallyconclusivelythattheelectorshad "had"Dr.Evattandallhestandsfor

Thedeputy-leaderoftheA.L.P.,Mr.Calwell,felt andexpressedtheapprehensiontowhichhischief seemssoimpervious.Hesawontheonesidethe triumphofLabour's"naturalenemies"andonthe other,adisasterworsethanmeredefeat,forthe LabourOppositioninVictoriawasleftthesmallest in30years.Thisdisasterheattributedto"internal disruption"andheappealedtoLabouritestostop therotspreadingtootherStates.Whathedidnot mentionwastheoriginoftherot-Dr.H.V.Evatt.

Thatgentleman,intheblindnessthatis characteristicofpride,lookedforwardtotheday whenthe"Kenngroup"intheFederalParliament wouldbethrownout.Whatheconvenientlyoverlookedwasthat,ontheVictoriananalogy,heand hiscronieswouldsufferalikefate.Itisquiteclear thatDr.Evattisquitepreparedtostandbyandsee theLabourPartyineachStateoftheCommon-wealthgodowninignominiousdefeatwithoutthe .slightestself-examinationastowhetherheisthe ...sourceofitshumiliation.Whatappearstobethe paramountconsiderationinhismindisnotthe futureofLabourbutthefutureofEvatt.

DR.EVATT'SMANOFSTRAW

ButwhattheVictorianpollbroughtmostvividly intoreliefisthestarkmendacityoftheleaderof Labour.If,ashehasallegedwithoutproofon numerousoccasions,the"movement"ofMr.Santamariawassuchadireandpowerfulconspiracy,it issurelysingularthatthemenwhowerelinked withhimin"attemptedsubversion"couldnotwin asingleseat.

IfSantamariahadthe"pull"whichEvattcontended,itwasassuredlynotinthepoliticalsphere. Henceitcouldonlyhavebeenintheindustrialwing ofLabourwhichtheIndustrialGrouperssaidwas thecase.WhythenhadDr.Evattbeenatsuch painstosetupthisstraw-manwhichhecould easilyblowdownandthenpretendtheVictorian electorshadhuffedandpuffedonhisbehalf?

Thefirstandmostobviousanswer,whichhas beenlostsightof,isthedesperateneedinwhich Dr.Evattfoundhimselfofadiversionarymanoeuvre todistractattentionfromhisdiscreditableassociates andtacticsinthePetrovaffair.Hewasbadlycompromised,orthoughthimselfso.Hehadtofinda scapegoatandhepickedontheIndustrialGroups andthefictionalpowerandambitionswhichhe allegedlaybehindthem.

Butthereisasecondandmorecogentreason Dr.Evatthadconfessedinapolicyspeechthatthe IndustrialGroupshaddoneagreatjobforthe LabourParty(whichithadnotbeenabletodu withoutthem)insweepingtheCommunistbosses outofmanyofthekeyunions.Theinsatiable ambitionofDr.Evattthensawwhathebelievedto betheuniquechancetosubjugatethepowerofthe industrialwingofLabourtothepoliticalcontrol andmore,tocombinethetwoinhisownhands.Na otherLabourleaderhadeverheldthatpre-eminence. fortheRed-dominatedunionswereneversubservienttothepoliticians,eveninquestionsvitally affectingnationalsecurity.

ButDr.Evattbadlymisjudgedthetemperofthe menwhohadfoughttheRedbosses.Theywere nomorepreparedtobowtodoctrinairesocialistsin thepoliticalarenathantheyhadbeentolaydown underthelong-establishedtyrannyoftheRedsin theunions.Theyhadfoughtforfreedomandthey hadlargelywonthebattle.Theywerenotgoing tosubmittoEvatt'schainsanymorethantoThornton's,Williams'orHealy's.Theyhadseenmore thanenoughoftheruininflictedonunionswhenthe Redsmadethemopportunistpoliticalammunition. TheywerenotgoingtobecanonfodderforEvatt's ambitions.

AMBITIONTORULEUNIONS

Whenthelearneddoctorrealisedthatthemen towhomhehadlenthisgraciouspatronagewerenot preparedtobehiscreaturesexceptinlegitimate uniondealings,hewasvastlydisappointed.For washenotthenear-divinerepositoryofLabour Truth?Hisgreatroseatedreamofunitingthetwo wingsofLabourinoneprodigiousbirddissipated inmorninglightofpoliticalreality.Angeredand frustrated,heturnedonthembecauseheknewthat asmenofconsciencetheywouldnotretaliateinthe waytheCommunistsinvariablybroughthimtoheel. Bankingontheirdecencyhehitthemhipandthigh. Ifwasnothingtohimthathewassmashingtheelite ofbothwingsofhisownparty.

Somethingofthatvauntingambitionrelatingto thefusionofthetwowings,withtheindustrial sectionplayingaverysoftobbligatotothepolitical CzarswasadvertedtobyMr.F.E.Chamberlainin hiscommentsontheVictorianelections."TheprogressoftheLabourmovement,"hesaid,"isnot completelymeasuredintermsofparliamentary seats."Washesardonicenoughtobethinking pleasurablyofthetamemenhemightaspireto traintoreplacetheIndustrialGroupersincontrol ofthekeyunions?

ThatistheareatperilinwhichtheLabourmovements' ii.at politiciansareavidtoreduce theunionstomereinstrumentalitiesofthepolitical arm,withnotrueidentityoftheirown.Ithasbeen alsothedreamandachievementofbothMarxist andFascistdictators.InRussiaandthesatellite countries"unions"haveaboutthesamevalidity andsignificanceas"elections."Therearebogus bodieswhichexistforsweatingworkersinthename ofsuperiorSocialistproductionmethods.

ButintheItalyofMussoliniandtodayinthe ArgentineofPeronunions(orcorporations)doexist andinaslightlylessgrosssensearethetoadiesand instrumentalitiesofover-weaningpoliticalambition. Theyhelpthedictatorskeeptheworkersquiet.

CREATINGASERVILECLASS

Andthat,Ifear,isthegreatEvattaspiration.He founditintolerablethatRed-dominatedunions shouldruncountertohisaims.Heexperienced equalrepugnancetoGroup-dominatedunionswhich wouldconcentrateongenuineworking-classprogressindependentlyofpoliticalexpediency.The thirdcoursewasto"create"aspecialservileclass ofofficials.BothDr.EvattandMr.Chamberlain haveproclaimedtheirintentionofattemptingthis experimentinspontaneousgeneration.Ofcourse itwillfailforitisthedreamofafool.

ThesewordsoftheHoly Fatherclearlyremindus thatalltheactsandactions inOurLord'slifewhich hadadirectrelation"to theheavenlyFather,first beginningandlastendof allcreatures"or"totheunhappyprogenyofAdam infectedwithoriginalsin," hadaliturgicalvalue.This meansthatthelabours,the prayersandthesacrificeof

actsandactionsofanindividual,liketheactsand actionsofanymanordinarilyare.

InOurLord'slifethese actsandactionshadapubliccharacter,becauseHe wastheHeadoftherace (oursecondAdam),and alsobecauseJesuswasalwaysthe"Saviour"and Christ,"thehighpriestthat haspassedrightupthrough theheavens.JesustheSon ofGod"(Heb.4:14).

Thespecialofficeofa highpriestistobemediator. betweenGodandmenbygivingdivinegiftstoman, andbyofferingtoGodthe prayersandsacrificeof men.Mediation,then,has twomovements:thedownwardmovementwhich bringsGod'sgraceandteachingtoman,andthe upwardmovementwhich offerstoGodtheoutpour- ingsofman'sheartexpressedinactsofprayerand sacrifice.Fromthiswe gatherthatJesusChrist,the SonofGod,isthenatural mediatorbetweenGodand menbytheveryconstitutionofHisbeing.ByHis humannatureHeislike oneofus,yetwithoutsin, andbyHisdivinenatureHe islikeuntotheFatherinall things.Bytheunionof thesetwonaturesinthe samedivinePerson,Christ isinfinitelyfarabovethe angels.

JesusChristisapriest forever.Heisthegreat HighPriesteversinceHis frailhumannaturewas takenup,anointedasit werebythefulnessofthe divinityoftheSecondPersonoftheBlessedTrinity. InTongastrangethings happen.FalconIsland,off theTongaGroup,hasaremarkablereputationamong map-makersforplaying hideandseek.Itwasfirst seenabout1885,andits cliffswerethenreportedto beupwardof150feethigh. Theislandwastherefore includedonamap,and fromthattimethetrouble began.

Onemorningsoonafterwardsthenativeswere astonishedtofindthatFalconIslandwasbutafew feetabovewater.The peoplewerescaredand superstitionranriot.The islandersavowedthatthe islandhadbeenvanquished bythewilloftheGreat WhiteSpirit.

Forweeksandmonths theykepteternalvigil,dayandnight,withtheboats loadedinreadiness,should theotherislandsonwhich theylivedshowsignsof sinking.

Afewyearsagoamove wasmadetoformafootballclub,tocaterforour ladsjustleavingschool. Aftermuchhardworkthis teamwasputinthefield andhasgivenagreataccountofitself,bothonand offthefield.

Verylittlecreditisdue toourownCatholicpeople. Therearesomewhowould notevenlettheirboysplay withus;andnowwehave justasmanynon-Catholics playingwithusandassistingus.Infact,thereare onlytwoCatholicmenon thecommittee.

Themainaimofforming thisclubwastokeepour ladstogether,afterfinishing school,andtoassistthem spirituallymorethananythingelse,butsadtosay, thisisnotthecase.

Thebell,whichhasgiven muchsatisfactiontothe parishioners,was rung officiallyforthefirsttime byMr.Lorenzi,amemberof theoriginalcommitteethat decidedtheparishshould haveabell.Itisthework ofGillettandJohnson-f Croydon,England,whose agentsinAustraliaare MarrinandCo.,Sydney.

Theparishpriest,theV. Rev.A.E.Langmead,said hegreatly helpfulnessappreciatedthe ofthisfirm,and thegraciousnessanddignity withwhichthetransaction wascarriedon.Ithadbeen arealpleasuretohavehad businessrelationswithsuch afirm. Adeliciousafternoontea wasthenservedandthe appreciationofthekindness oftheLittleSisterswasexpressedtothegoodMother. TheBasketballAssociation isverygratefultothe Sistersforallowingits memberstohavetheirDay ofRecollectionatGlendaloughandfordoingsomuch tomakethedaysoenjoy- able.

Theirgratefulthanksare alsoextendedtoFather Depiazziforgivinghisday tothebasketballers.

Itisregrettedthatmore girlsdidnottakeadvantage oftheopportunityofattendingtheDayofRecolFinn,whopreparedmorningandafternoonteasfor theworkers.AlsotoMr. Purcellfortransportofthe bellfromFremantle,and Mr.Martinovichforuseof hoist;andfinallythanksto allwhohelpedbytheir generousdonations,tothe choir,andtoFatherPorcellini.
