TheoldchurchofSt.PatrickinFremantleisnowgone,carryingwithit95years' memories.Thebuildingwasnolongerusedasachurch.Thegroundonwhichthe sanctuaryoncestoodwillbeoccupiedbyanewparishhalldedicatedtothememoryof theheroicparishionerswhogavetheirlivesinthetwoworldwars.Butthepassingof oldSt.Pat'swillgrievemanyincludingtheBenedictinesofNewNorcia.

TheBenedictineswere neverformallyestablished inFremantle,butinadditiontomanyotherlabours, theydidalotofpioneer workinwhatwasthen knownastheSwanRiver Settlement.ThefirstbaptismrecordedinFremantle wasofoneWm.White,and hewasbaptisedbyaBenedictine,CoadjutorBishop Serra.Theyearwas1850.
Amigrant,newlyarrived thatyear,describedFremantleas"anexceedingly dismal,unhospitableplace. Ithadafewdecenthouses inHigh-st.,anumberof barkhutsandendlessand unlovelysanddunes.A placethatshowednohope ofdevelopment."But,contrarytoexpectations,Fremantlediddevelop.
In1854theBenedictines builtapresbyterythere, nowlongsincegone.In 1859,BrotherAscione, O.S.B,designedandbuilt St.Patrick'sChurch.Accordingtorecords,hewas assistedbytwoother Brothersandsomelocal labour.
Nextyear,onSt.Patrick's Day,thenewchurchwas officiallyopenedbythe Apostolic Administrator, FatherMartinGriver,afterwardsBishopofPerth.It wasacruciformbuilding, thusremindingpeopleof theirredemptionbytheSon ofGodwhodiedonacross. Howmanysoulssharedin thoseredemptivegraces withinitswalls!
Thereinfantswerewashedwithbaptismalwater, andsentforthchildrenof God,warnedtocarrytheir burninglightandkeepthe Commandments.Olderchildrenknelt,somewhattimidly,attheBishop'sfeettobe anointedwithchrismand confirmedintheirChristian faithandChristianwayof life. Thererepentantsinners cametokneelinhumble accusationatthefeetof God'srepresentative,the priest,who,withhispriestly power,restoredthemto graceandfriendship.How manytimesdidMary'sSon comedowntothealtarrails tomeetHischildrenin HolyCommunion.

Thatsamealtarrailoften heardthesolemnpledge:"I promisetotakeasmylawfulwife tohaveandto holdtilldeath,"andthe happycouplewalkedoff withtheblessingofGodto buildanotherChristian home.
Sometimes,too,acoffin wouldrestthereasitthe deadwouldmakeonelast visit,andtheprayerofthe peoplewouldriseuppast thecoffintotheverydoor ofthetabernacle:"Grantto thesoulofThyservantdepartedtheremissionofhis sins.Mayherestinpeace!"
Andthroughoutallthese yearsatinyredflame flickeredinthesanctuary, silentlyre-echoingthe Saviour'sinvitation,"Come
tomeallyouthatlabour andareburdenedandIwill refreshyou,"andthepeople cameandwererefreshed andtheykepttheFaith.
Andeachmorningasthe risingsunshonethrough theeasternwindowitsrays fellonthevestedpriestand theadoringpeopleasthe Lambwasofferedinthe perfectactofworship.
Andsoitwentonfor40 longyears,Godlivingin themidstofHispeople,and theydrawingclosertoHim. Perhapsonecaneasily enterthemindofanelderly man,whorecentlyvisited theplacefromanoutlying parish.Hepickedupa smallstonefromthedebris andreverentlycarriedifoff asarelic,remarkingashe went,"Iamsorrytoseeit gone."
In1896BishopGibney invitedtheMissionaryOblatesofMaryImmaculate totakechargeofFremantle. Theparishthenembraced NorthandEastFremantle, aswellasBeaconsfield. PalmyraandHopeValley.
Theyfoundthechurch muchtoosmall,andso,four yearslaterthepresent churchwasopened.Ever sincethentheoldbuilding wasusedasaparishhall.
Now,ontheadviceofthe Archbishop,ithasbeen demolished,partlytomake possiblethecompletionof thesanctuaryofthepresent St.Patrick's,andpartlyto allowspacefortheerection ofamodernparishhall. Thisnewhall,ofbrickand

-Aresolutiontopetition thePhilippineBoardofReviewforMotionPicturesto prohibittheatresfromshowingindecentmovieswas passedattheannualLeadershipConferenceofStudentCatholicActionof Manila.
Theresolution,passed unanimouslybytheconferenceofcollegestudents, pointedtotheperniciouseffectsindecentmovieswere havingonPhilippineyouth.
- Itstatedthatunlesssomethingisdonetosafeguard themoralsofyouth,the countrywillultimatelyhave onlyleadersentirelydevoid ofanystandardofmorality.
RoadBoard,andasa parishionerfromfurther south,feltthathemust congratulatehismorenorthernbrothersontheirvery effectiveparishspirit.
Mr.Fogartyspokeforthe Cowaramupcommunity.He wasthebuildingcontractor ofthechurchandfelta justifiableprideinthecompletedbuilding.Thecommunitywouldcertainly benefitbythatlittlechurch, andtheirappreciationwas alreadyevidentintheir whole-heartedco-operation.

Someoftheyoungmen refugeeshavealreadybeen persuadedtoenrolassoldiersintheBinhXuyen forces.Accordingtoone refugee,thesenowform morethanonebattalion.
Thesettlementunder BinhXuyenauspicesisthe onlyrefugeevillagethat thiscorrespondenthasyet seenwherethereisnotemporarychurch.Massissaid inaricegranary.
Itappearsthatthegreat majorityofVietnamese clergydisapproveofthe attitudetakenbytheproBinhXuyenpriest.

Italyisseparatedfrom thecountriesofthenorth byagreatmassofmountainscalledtheAlps.Thesearemadeupofrugged ranges,snow-coveredpeaks anddeepvalleys;andno travellerscancrossthem exceptwheretherockywall ispiercedbylongwinding mountainpasses. Inwinterthepassesaremadedangerousbydeep snowdrifts,andbythe avalanchesthatcomecrashingdowntheirruggedsides. Todaymosttravellersuse therailwayswhichgounder themountainsthroughlongtunnels.Beforetherailwayswerebuilt,theroad mostfrequentlyusedran alongthefamousSt.BernardPass.Throughthis passinyearslonggoneby greatarmieshadmorethan onceinvadedItaly.
Onthehighestpointof thepassistheHospiceof St.Bernard,andformore thanathousandyearsthe monksofthismonastery havewatchedoverthe travellerswhousethedangerousroad.
St.Bernardwasbornat theCastleofMenthonin France,justathousand yearsago.Hebecamea priest,andononeofhis journeystoItalywas grievedtofindthatthe peoplelivinginthevalleys oftheAlpswerestill pagans.
ToHelpTravellers
FormanyyearsSt.Bernardpreachedtothese valleysofthemountains andconvertedthemallto thefaithofChrist.Sorelywashegrieved,too,tosee howpoortravellerswere oftencaughtinsnowstorms, and,losingtheirway, perishedofcoldandhunger.
Onthehighestpointof thepassthatnowbearshis name,thesaintbuilta monasteryandtoldthe monkstogivefoodand sheltertotravellers,andto searchforthemwhenthey gotlostinthesnow.From thatdaytothis,neverhave themonksfailedinthetask giventothembytheirkind andholyfounder.
Tohelpthemtofindthe travellerslostinthesnow, themonksusedanumberof cleverlytraineddogs.And averynoblekindofdogdid theychooseforthiswork. HaveyoueverseenaSt. Bernarddog?Heisamost beautifulanddignifiedanimal,intelligent,braveand goodtempered.Hiscoatis redororangeincolourwith whitemarkingsonthe muzzle,chest,neckand feet.Thetipofhistailis alsowhite.Hestands nearlythreefeethighand weighsabout200lbs.He couldcarryyouonhisback quiteeasily.
Everymorningandeveningduringthewintera monk,accompaniedbytwo dogs,usedtostartfromthe monasteryfortheshelter hut,whichwasbuiltatthe footofthemountainonthe Italianside.Asimilarparty wouldsetoutatthesame timefortheSwissendof thepass. Ifanytravellerswere foundtheywerehelpedto themonasterywherethey wereshelteredforthenight. Inthemorningtheywould setforthrefreshed,andbe guidedoverthedangerous partsofthepass. Sometimesthedogswere sentoutalongwithaflask ofbrandytiedtothecollar. Whenatravellerwasdiscoveredthedogwould scratchawaythesnowand
permithimtotaketheflask. Thedogwouldtheneither leadthewaytothemonastery,orelse,returning alone,bringthemonksto thespot.
Oneofthesedogs,whose namewasBarry,savedthe livesofonfewerthan40 persons.Forhisbrave deedshewasrewardedwith asilvermedalwhichwas alwaysfixedtohiscollar. Barrywasatlengthkilled byatravellerwhomhe foundburiedinadeep snow-drift. Thebravedoghadwith difficultyrousedtheman fromthedeadlystupor whichhadseizedhimand whichisthesureforerunnerofdeath.Mistaking hisrescuerforawildbeast, thetravellerplungedhis knifeintothedog'sneck.
Inspiteofthis,Barry keptathistaskuntilatlast thetravellerunderstood thathehadbeenfoundby oneoftheSt.Bernarddogs. Herose,andleaningon Barry,whosestrengthwas rapidlyfailingfromlossof blood,atlastreachedthe hospice.

HencewemustconcludethatMr.Chamberlain's notionofthedignityofmanisnotatheologicalone. SeeminglyhedoesnotthinkofmanasChristians do,butofthathumorousfellow,"EconomicMan" whoisbutanantonanant-hill,or"PoliticalMan" whosesillinessisstickingoutoneveryside.This viewofexistence(foritcannotinanysatisfactory sensebecalledlife)isknownasmaterialismand itisacommonmeetinggroundforCommunistsand secularistpoliticians.Itdoesn'treallymatterthat theCommunistisforrevolutionandSocialistfor gradualism.Theendresultofbothsystemsisthe ant-hill.Andthatiswhymenofthekidneyof Dr.EvattandMr.Chamberlainhavenogreatheart inthebattleagainstCommunism.Themethods seemalittleextremetothem,maybe,butthefinal
ButMr.Chamberlainshouldrememberthatno Christiancanacceptthatpropositionwhichelevates politicaldecisionstoaprimacyoverthespiritual whichismanifestlyabsurd.Ifheappealstothe CatholicsintheLabourPartytopreferhisguidance totheleadershipoftheirBishops,heasksforan allegiancethattheCatholiccannotgivehim.For inthisquestionisinvolvedprimaryissuesconcerningfaithuponwhichtheBishopshaveadivine mandatetoteachwithauthority.Wherethereisa collisionbetweenamatterofconscienceandamere politicalhullabaloo,allthe"interference"willbe foundonthesideofthelesserparty.

Whilethesegreataffairswereintrainbetween theCatholicHierarchyandtherumpofLabour,a thinlittlevoicepipedoutoftheUniversitypaper, "ThePelican."TheUniversityauthoritieswere reportedtohavesoughtthesuppressionofthatissue becauseofanaccountofabeer-drinkingcarnival. 1 prefertobelievethatthiswasagracioussubtlety tocovertheshameofthestridentsectarianismof anotherarticle.Afterall,beer-drinkingmaypromoteconvivialityevenifitendsinsoreheads.But thestirringofreligioushatredcansucceedonlyin promtingtheendsofSatan.Its"hang-over"is acidosisoftheheartanddehydrationofthemind.
Idonotproposetogivemuchspacetotheoutpouringsoftheignorantyoungmanwhodistilled thisvenom,fortheegoofsucharawtypeisequally inflatedbycriticismasbypraise.Buthedidcause acuteembarrassmenttotheLiberalMovement,of whoseCityClubbranchheisthepresident.His powerofjudgmentwasnotsufficientlydeveloped topreventhisidentifyinghisMariaMonk-typeof bigotrywithLiberalPartythought.
Inhisrabideagernesstodisavowanyconnection betweenthe"rebels"ofLabourandtheLiberals, hequiteneglectedtodisassociatehissectarian slandersfromtheusuallineofCommunistpropaganda.TheonlycommentthatMr.Hartley'.; scribblingcallsforistorecommendthatheinclude historyinwhatevercoursehemaybereading.

OurMethodistfriendshaveseeminglynotpaid usthecomplimentofreadingthePastoralinfull fortheysaythatweclaimtobealoneinthefight againstCommunism.YettheBishopsstate:"Many citizensofdifferentreligiousfaithsdedicatedthemselvestotheorganisedtask ."TheMethodists claimthatthewaytofightCommunismistoremove theconditionsinwhichitflourishes.Verytrueasa longrangeaimbutwhatistobedoneabouta dangersuchasthreatenedAustraliafromReddominationoftheunionsduring1945-49?
If"pressuregroups"hadnotthensteppedintothe breach,therewouldhavebeennotimeoropportunitytoemploynormal,long-rangemethods.The revolutionwouldhavebeenuponus.Apartfrom thatfaithisnotenough.Forpartoftheprocessof restoringsocietytoChristianfoundationsisthe negativeoneofbeatingdownCommunismwherever itappears.Itisanalogoustothedevelopmentofthe Christianlifeitself.Sinhastoberootedoutbefore thevirtuescanbeplantedandfosteredtohealthy growth.

OnMay24,thefeastofOurLady,HelpofChristians,anothermilestonewillbe reachedinthehistoryofCatholiceducationinAustraliawhentheSistersofSt.Joseph oftheApparitionofFremantlewillcelebratethecentenaryofthefoundationoftheir firstConventinAustraliain1855.Suchanoccasionispropitiousforabriefreview ofthestoryofSt.Joseph'swhichforthepast100years,despiteadversity,povertyand depression,haskeptthelightoffaithburning,notonlyintheportitself,butthrough- outthecountryareasofthisvastState,extendinginrecentyearsalsotoVictoria. shoresof whencetheMediterranean, somanyofits membersweretosetouton theirjourneyingstoforeign lands.
Itisinterestingtonote heretheclosefriendshipandassociationthathas existedbetweentheSisters ofSt. Fathers.JosephandtheOblate Itwasduetothe encouragementandadvice of theMonsignordeMazenod, founderoftheSociety oftheOblatesofMaryImmaculate,thatthechoiceof MarseillesastheheadquartersoftheOrderwas made.
Todayinmanylands,the SistersofSt.Josephmaybe foundworkingsidebyside withtheOblateFathers,for theredemptionofsouls. Nowhereisthismoretrue thaninFremantle,whereforthepast60years,their co-operativeworkhaspros- pered.
Veryshortlyafterits foundation,Sistersofthe Orderweretobefoundin Algeriagivingbothspirit- ualandbodilyhelpandconsolationtothenativesduringacholeraepidemic. Nextwefindtheminsuch widelyseparatedplacesas Malta,Greece,Syria,IndoChinaandBurma.
Itisnotthereforesurpris- ingthatthenewsofthe successoftheirmissionary zealinthefaceofalmost overwhelmingoddsshould beknowntoChurchauthorities,particularlytothose attemptingmissionarywork indistantcountries.
BishopSerra'sPlea
Thusitcameaboutthat Dr.Serra,BishopofPerth,realisingthegreatneedfor moreteachingSistersinhis vastdiocese,decidedtoapproachMotherEmiliewhile hewasinEuropein1854.
TotheMotherHousein Marseilleshewentand placedhiscasebeforeher.
AtthattimeinFrance, littlewasknownofAustraliaandstilllessofthe SwanRiverColony.Mother Emilielistenedattentively tothe toldBishop'splea.He herthattherewasbut oneorderofnunsinW.A. -theSistersofMercywho hadbeguntheirgrandwork inPertheightyearspre- viously.
ButFremantlewassteadilygrowinginimportance, andwithapopulationof about1,600wasdesperately inneedofaconventschool. Masswassaidatirregular intervalsinasmallhouse situatedat67Henry-st. (whichwaseventuallyto becomethefirsthomein AustraliaoftheSistersof St.Joseph)buttherewere manychildreninthedistrict towhomeventhenameof Godwaspracticallyunknown.
WhentheBishopconcluded,MotherEmiliepromisedtosendhimfourSisters whowerechosenwithdifficultyfromthelargenumberofvolunteers.Those chosenwereallyoungand energetic,astheyhadneed tobe,fortheworkthatlay beforethemwasdifficult andlaborious.
Finally,undertheleadershipofSisterJulieCabag- nol,agedonly25,thelittle band,consistingofSister MaryLucy(Freuqet),Sister M.Emilie(Petit)andSister M.Zoe(deChamonin),set sailontheP.and0.ship the"Amherst"inJanuary, 1855.Whatacontrastfrom themodernP.and0.liners wasthetinysailingvessel onwhichtheheroicsouls setoutonaperilousvoyagelastingnearlyfivemonthsavoyagewhichwastotake themforeverfromtheir nativeland!

Amidthecheersofthe othertravellerswhowere leaningovertherailson thedeck,theSistersentereduponthelaststagesof theirjourney.Astheboats
reachedtheshore,the Sisterswerecarriedonto thesands,whereahearty welcomeawaitedthemfrom theassembledpeople.
Thiscompleted,theyturntheirfacestotheirnew home,andsentupasilent prayerofthanksgivingfor theirsafearrival,anda prayerforcourageandstrengthtofacetheunknownfuture.Accompan- iedbypracticallyallthe townsfolk,theSistersset outonfootfortheirlittle homeinHenry-st.,furnish- edforthembylovinghands.
Althoughthemajorityof theCatholicswerepoor, theyhadallcontributed somethingtostockthelarder,andtomakethecottageascomfortableaspos- sible.Gradually,astheir fewsimplepossessionsin theirpackingcaseswere broughtin,andasthekindlytownsfolkleftfortheir ownhomes,theSisterssat downtoreviewthesituation.
God safelyhadbroughtthem acrossthewasteof watersrightintothehearts ofthepeopleofFremantle. LaBelleFrancewasgone, perhapsforever,butbefore themstretchedanunknown continent.
BastionInWest lonelinessPoverty,hardshipand weretobetheir portion,untilfinallytheir missionwasasuccess,andtheyestablished,secureasa rock,thecommunitywhich for100yearshasbeena bastionofCatholicismin WesternAustralia.
Butlittleofthatbrilliant futurewasapparentinthe firstmonthsaftertheirarrival.Tobeginwith,the houseinHenry-st.was muchtoosmall-fourrooms only-toserveaschurch andschoolandconvent.It openeddirectlyontothe foothpath,andasitwas builtbelowstreetlevelthe Sisterswereoftenflooded outduringthewinter months.
firstAlthoughevenfromthe dayitsinadequacies wereapparent,theHenryst.housewastododutyfor threeyears,andthefirst conventschoolwasopened
foraconventschool,sothat theSistersweredoublywelcome.Allsectionsof the thecommunityheldthemin thehighestregard,andfrom outsetthesuccessof theirmissionwasassured. Fromitshumblebegin- ningsin1855,theconvent classroomshavealways beenfilled.For40years aftertheircomingtoFre- mantle,noothercommunity ofnunscametoW.A.,so thattheSistersofSt.Joseph sharewiththeSistersof Mercythegreathonourof beingthepioneersofCatholiceducationinthisState.
Thestandardofeducationgivenhasalwaysbeen high,andithasbeeneducationinthecompletesensewithChristianityasits basis,andtheeternalsalva- tionofsoulsitsobjective.

Eventually, however, whenconditiaonsbecame moreandmoreintolerable, andasthenumberof scholarsquicklyincreased, amovewasmadetoarentedhouseinQueen-st,in 1858. ForfivemoreyearstheSisterslivedandtaughtin theQueen-st.house,which, likeitspredecessor,soon becametoosmallforthe ever-growingneedsofits pupils,soin1863thefinal movewasmadetothe presentsiteadjacenttoSt. Patrick'sChurchwhichhad beencompletedbythe Benedictinesafewyears previously.
Originallytheconvent wasaverymodeststructure,butthroughoutthe yearsithasbeenenlarged andextendeduntiltodayit standsastheRegional HouseoftheOrderinAus-
tralia.
MiserableSands
TotheSisterswhoarrived atFremantleonthatMay morningahundredyears ago,thelandtowhichthey hadcomemusthavepre- sentedasorrycontrastto theonewhichtheyhadleft.
Fromalandwithcenturiesofcivilisationbehind it,theyhadcometoaland scarceyetawakenedfrom thewomboftime.The greenfieldsofFrancehad yieldedplaceto"nothing butmiserablesandsnorth andsouthasfarastheeye cansee,"accordingtoone chronicleroftheperiod.
Fremantleatthattime wasfardifferentfromthe thrivingcityoftoday.The colonyitselfwasbut26 yearsold,andtwiceduringthosetwodecadesithad beennearlyabandoned.
Butthefaithinitsfuture heldbyitsfirstGovernor Stirling,andthegrim tenacityoftheearly settlers,manyofwhom anyhow,couldnotaffordto goelsewhere, settlementkeptthelittle together.

In1834,GeorgeFletcher Moorewritinginhisdiary givesthisunflatteringdescriptionofFremantle:"a barebarren-lookingdistrict; theshrubscutforfirewood;theherbagetroddenbare;a few raggedwoodenhousesamong other-lookingtentsand contrivancesforhabitation;onepoorhotel;a poor whichpublichouseinto everyonecrowded;a fewcheerlessdissatisfied peoplewithgloomylooks ploddingtheirwaythrough thesandfromhuttohutto drinkgrog,andgrumbleouttheirdiscontenttoeach other."
Thesubsequentprogress ofthetownprovesthatthe pioneerswholaiditsfoundationswerenotthe drunkenlotofgrumblers theaboveextractwouldindicate.
Still,evenin1854weare told,"Fremantleisasmall insignificantplacescarce worthyofthenameoftown. High-st.hasafewdecent housesaswellasoneortwo hotelsoffairproportions. Inthecentreofthetown areonlyafewstringybark cottagesdottedhereand there.Itisindeedadismal spot."
Theintroductionofthe convictsystemin1850&I muchtoassistinthedevelopmentofFremantle. Variousgovernmentbuildings andwereconstructed,roads bridgeswerebuiltand homesforthevarious officialsandtheirfamilies wereprovided. Thisinfluxofchildren mademoreurgenttheneed
NorisitonlyintheclassroomthatthebenigninfluenceoftheSistershas beenfelt.Making,asthey did,theirfirstfoundation attheheadquartersofthe penalsystem,wherethe grimwallsofthegaollook- eddownuponthetown,theyhavehelpedthrough- outtheyearstobringcorn- forttothe Underprisoners. theharshlawsof thelastcentury,manya personreceivedasavage sentenceforwhattoday wouldberegardedasa trivialoffence.Tothese, andtothosewhohadtransgressedmoreseriously,or tothosewhowereinthe shadowofthegallows,the onerayofhopeintheir drearyliveswastheregular visitationoftheSisters,who gavethemcomfortand hopeandresignation,where formerlytherewasbutgrief anddespair.
Thepovertyofmanyof theirfellow-citizensmade asdeepanimpressionon SisterJulieandhercompanions,asthesightof povertyinhernativevillage hadmadeontheirbeloved Foundress.
inAlthoughthemselvespoor thisworld'sgoods,there wasalwayssomethingatSt. Joseph'sforthoseinneed. Whatfoodtheyhadthey werewillingtosharewith thehungry.Andthat,too, isacustomwhichhasen-duredthroughtheyears.

HowwellIrememberin411' mychildhooddaysatthe convent,thedailysightof men-homelessandwork- less-liningupatthekitchendoorforameal.How busilyoccupiedtheSisters wereinprovidingthemwith ahotmealanda"lunch"to takeaway,andhowfervent werethe"Thankyou'sand GodBlessYou's"which camefromthegratefullips ofthosewhoseimmediate needshadbeensupplied.
Ireallythinkthiswasmy firstrecognitionoftheinadequaciesandinequalities ofoursocialsystem,which ledme,inlateryears,to try it."to"dosomethingabout
Ofcourse,theSisters weresometimestakeninby aplausiblerascalbutnot veryoften.WhenIasked aboutthisoneday,oneof theSistersengagedinthis workofcharitysaidtome: "Itisbetterforustobedeceivedonceortwice ratherthanahungrymen shouldgo
Finally,emptyaway."tocompletethefour-foldtaskimposedon thecongregation-toteach thechildren;tohelpthe friendless;tofeedthe hungry,andtovisitthe sick.Thehospitalsinthedistricthavebeenregularly visitedovertheyears.And notonlythehospitals,butthesickintheirhomeshave hadtheirsufferingslighten- edbyavisitfromthe Sisters.
Evenintheveryearlydayswhenluxurieswere fewandfarbetween,and whenthebarestnecessities oflifewerehardtocome by.manyalittledelicacy giventotheSistersfortheir ownusebysomekind friendorotherhasfound itswaytoapoorsufferer.
TheSistersthemselves liveveryfrugally,butthere isnothingfrugalabout theirgenerositytoothers. Thus,astheygoontheir worksofcharity,theyhavebecomewell-lovedand familiarfiguresinthe streetsofFremantle,where theyreceivethehighestrespectfromthecommunity ingeneral.
