TheCommunistthreattotheChristianworldisnot somethingthathassuddenlyariseninourgeneration. Itsfundamentalerrorswereexposedbythegreat Popes,whoruledtheChurchduringthelastone hundredyears.TheBishopsoftheCatholicChurch, inunionwiththeSovereignPontiffs,havebeenforemostintheworld-widestruggleagainstatheistic Communism.
Inonegenerationthisaggressiveandruthless movementhascontrivedtoholdaboutadozennations inbitterbondage.Untoldsufferingshaveafflicted millionsofhelplesspeople,andsincetheCatholic Churchhasalwaysbeenthechiefopponentofthis sinistersystem,thepersecutor'shandhasstruckmost heavilyattheBishopsofChrist'sflock.
Theclergyandthefaithful,oftendeprivedofthe guidanceoftheirappointedleaders,havesuffered brutalenslavement,tortureanddeath.Theinvader's thrustisnowextendingoverSouthEasternAsia,and weinAustraliahavebecomeacutelyconsciousofthe sufferingsinflictedonournorthernneighbours.It wouldbesheerfollytoblindourselvestothepossibilitythatasimilarfatecouldsoonoverwhelmour owncountry.
Mindfulofourresponsibilitiesasspiritualguides, theCatholicBishopsofAustralia,assembledatour annualmeeting,gaveearnestconsiderationtothis gravedanger.Wefeelboundtorepeattheserious warningwehavefrequentlygiventhattherecanbe nocompromisewiththeCommunistsystem.The ChurchisunswervinglyopposedtoCommunism becauseofitsatheism,materialismanddenialofbasic humanrights."Communismisintrinsicallywrong," saidthelatePopePiusXI,"andnoonewhowould saveChristiancivilisationcangiveitassistanceinany undertakingwhatever.Thosewhopermitthemselves tobedeceivedintolendingtheiraidtowardsthe triumphofCommunismintheirowncountrywillbe thefirsttofallvictimsoftheirerror."(1)
Itisawell-knownfactthatduringthelastten yearsCatholicsinAustraliahaveendeavouredtoform astrongpublicopinionagainstCommunistactivities inourcommunity.Thiswasanobleundertaking, patrioticallydirectedtosafeguardourFatherland, therightsandlibertiesofourfellowcitizensandthe freeexerciseofreligion.TheleadersofthiscampaignwerefamiliarwiththeextentofCommunist suppressionsofthoserightsandprivilegesinother countries.Theyforesaw,asthehistoryofsubsequent yearsproved,thattheCommunistplantocapture TradeUnionsandotherpublicbodiesinAustralia waspartofaclearlydesignedschemetoseizecompletepoliticalcontrolofthecountry.
Australianpublicopiniongenerallyfailedtorealise thatintheyear1945everymajorTradeUnion,with oneexception,wasinthehandsoftheCommunists. AtthatperiodtheBiennialCongressoftheAustralian CouncilofTradeUnionswasdominatedbyaCommunistmajority.
cipientrevoltsexpressingthemselvesintheLabour Party."(2)Again:"OurcomradesintheTrade UnionsshouldassistthereformistTradeUnion LeaderswhoarenotconnecteddirectlywiththeIndustrialGroups."(3)
Itisveryregrettablethathighlyplacedpublicmen, includingsomeCatholics,seemtohaveclosedtheir eyestothegreatissuesinvolvedinthepresentupheaval.Theydonotappeartorealisethattheyare forwardingtheinterestsofCommunism.
Thereseemstobeeverylikelihoodthatthepresent politicalupheavalhaspresentedtheCommunistswith anunexpectedvantagegroundintheirfight.Wefear thatthehard-earnedfruitsofvictoryinindustrywill bespeedilylostbyarenewalofCommunistcontrol overourindustriallife.
Manypeoplearedeeplyconfusedbytherecent happeningsinourmidst.Theyjustlyfearthatthe causeofCommunismhasbeenadvancedconsiderably duringthelastfewmonths.Internallyandexternally thepositionhasworsened.Verymanypeopleare askingustogivethemsomedirectioninthepresent confusedsituation.
TheChurchisnotconcernedwithPartyPoliticsas such.IthasnodesiretoestablishaCatholicdominationinpubliclife,norhasitbeenattemptingtodo this.Itseeksonlytopreservefreedom,toservethe commongoodandtounitewithourfellowcitizensin achievingtheseaims.LetusemphasisethatCatholics havealwaysbeenfree,andremainfreetoexercise theirfranchiseaccordingtotheirconscientiousjudgmentsonpolicies,partiesandcandidates.Theyare, ofcourse,notfree"toprofess,defend,orspreadthe materialisticandanti-ChristiandoctrineoftheCommunists."(4)
Atthemomentthereisoneoutstandingissuefor theNationandtheChurch.ItistheimmediateCommunistthreattothesecurityofthepeopleandtothe freedomofreligioninAustralia.
Thisperilhasatwofoldaspect,disruptionfrom withinandaggressionfromwithout.Wedeplore thefactthatsomepublicmenhavefailedtorealise themagnitudeofthisissue.Theyseemtoconcentrate onissuesoflessermoment,ortoactfromconsiderationsofpersonalambitionoradvantage.Itisonly theCommunistcausethatwillultimatelybenefitfrom thisfailuretofaceuptothebasicnationalissue.
Wearealarmedattheattitudeofthosewho, withoutfindinganadequatesubstitute,haveseenfit todisbandawell-provenmeansoffightingeffectively theCommunistthreattothenation.Iftheyfailto providesuchasubstitutetheywillhavefailedintheir dutytoAustralia.Meregeneraliseddeclarationsof hostilitytoCommunismarecompletelyfutileinthese times.
TheircontroloftheTradeUnionMovementenabled theCommuniststoexerciseastrangleholdoverthe economiclifeofthenation,astheseriesofgreat strikes,whichplaguedAustraliafrom1945to1949, conclusivelyproved.
Inspiteofgeneralapathy,manycitizensofdifferent religiousfaithscourageouslydedicatedthemselvesto theorganisedtaskofhelpingTradeUnioniststoelect officialswhowereopposedtoCommunism.
Itisaremarkableandinspiringfactthatthese realisticcitizenswereabletoachieveaspectacular measureofsuccess.Therewas,however,littlepublic appreciationofthevaluableworkbeingdoneby thesepatrioticmenandwomen,althoughgovernments,commerce,industryandtheAustralianpeople generallyreapedthebenefitsofthepeaceandsecurity whichensued.
Werecognisethatthiscourageouscampaignsaved ourcivilandreligiousfreedomsataperiodwhenthey wereingraveperil,andwetakethisopportunityof payingawarmpublictributeofgratitudetoallwho havebeenengagedinthestruggle.
ThisgreatworkoffightingandstemmingCommunistaggressionwhereveritshowsitselfhasour fullsupportandapproval.Itisthereforemostdeplorablethattheonlyeffectivewayyetfoundof defeatingCommunisminindustriallifehasbeen destroyedforthemomentbypoliticalintrigue.
ItwasvitaltotheCommunistcausethatthe militantoppositionwhichstoodbetweenitandthe controloftheTradeUnionsshouldbedestroyed.

VC%ehavethedeepestsympathyandadmirationforthe nationalaspirationsofthesecountries.Wesharein thewell-foundedfearsofmanyofournorthern neighboursthattheirnewly-wonfreedomwillbe sacrificedonthealtarofatheisticCommunism.For thisreason,Australia'sforeignpoliciesmustbe judgedinthelightoftheirbearingonCommunist strategyathomeandabroad.TheoverallCommunistobjectiveisthegravestperilnowthreatening thefreedomofAsiaandthefreedomofAustralia.
Therefore,wecallonallCatholicsandappealto allourfellowcitizensoftheCommonwealthtoface thegreatthreatofourtimeswithcourage,coolness ofjudgmentandself-sacrifice.Westronglyurge themtoopposevigorouslyanyrevivalofCommunist influenceandpowerinourpolitical,industrialand culturallife.

And,asthecalltodayis forCatholicsandProtestantstounitetoavertthe conversionofAustraliainto apoliceState-whichit willbecomeiftheimminentthreatfromAsianCommunismisnotremovedthereis inspirationencouragementand inthefactthat someofthesesevenmen wereCatholicsandsome Protestants.
"The1848Men"isoneof the13absorbingchaptersin abookbyDr.T.J.Kiernan, untilrecentlyAmbassador forIrelandatCanberra. Theimpressofthescholar andthehistorianisonthis book,whichisentitled,"The IrishExilesinAustralia."
Intheprefaceitisremarkedthat"the'desperate characters'oftheAustralianHistoricalRecordscan beseenmorewhollyand moredecently,andsym-pathisedwithandpitied,by linkingthem,astheirbodilyliveswerelinked,withwhat broughtthemtotheconvictsettlement.
That,inbrief,isthepurposeofthisbook."Itis apurposewhichtheauthor hasachievedadmirably.
AtthedawnofCatholicisminthiscolony,puny governorsweresuspicious "thattheir(theconvicts') religiousfeelingsmightbe workeduponbyadesigningartfulpriest,soasto exciteaspiritofresistance, insubordinationandinsurrection."

Thispoweralonewould betremendousenough-a thing"sowondrousthatit surpasseswonder,"asSt. JohnChrysostomsays,but Godgivesthepriestanother marvellouspower,the powertoforgivesins.
Thedignityofthepriesthoodthenisbeyondmeasure.
Nomancaneverbe worthyofthisdivinemission,butGodcallscertain peopletoit,andthereisa dutyonthemtocomply.
Itisforthisveryreason thatseminarieshavebeen established.Youngmengo theretofindoutwhether theyhaveavocation,and
topreparethemselvesfor theworkofsavingsouls.
Theseminary,then,isan institutionwhichshould occupytheattentionofall Catholics,forthosewhowill guidethemandconferthe Sacramentsaretocome fromthere.
Consequentlyallshould helptheseminary,andthis bythreemainways.Primarilytheyshoulddowhat theycantosupplythe aspirantstothepriesthoodparentshaveagraveconcernhere.

Itisinfinitelymoretruetosaythatitwasdueto theappallingapathyofrank-and-fileunionistswho weretootiredtoattendmeetings.Itisequallytrue thatLabourleaderswereimpotentinthefaceofthat creepingparalysisandthatonlytheindustrial grouperswereabletoshakeofftheinertiaandmake unionismalivingthing-forwhichtheywereduly praisedbyDr.Evatt(ante-Petrov).Mostofallis ittruethatthewantondissolutionofthegroupswill seetheoldlangourreturnandthecomradesseizing' theirvantagepoint.

Afterthediscussionwas concluded,ourguestspeaker,Mr.Lipsett,wentonto dealinfullwithtrade unionsfollowingtoacertainextentthelinestaken inthediscussion.
Mr.Lipsettbeganbysay- ingthatthemostimportant questionwaswhatwasthe unionfor?Iftheydidnot knowthenitwasofvery littleusetojoinaunion.

Then,too,thetrade unionswereinstrumentalin raisingofapprenticeship wages.Inthematterof compensation,also,the workofthetradeunions hadbeenevident.
Indealingwiththepoliti- calset-upMr.Lipsettsaid thattheunionswereunable todoalltheywanted throughindustrialaction only,sotheydecidedto sendarepresentativeto parliamentanditwasfrom thisbeginningthatthe LabourPartygradually grew. Eachunionaffiliatedwith theA.L.P.sentamember tothedistrictcounciland fromthedistrictcouncila delegatewasselectedto attendFederalconferences.
