Aspecialwinghasbeen addedasahostelfornative boysfromthemissionswho, whiledoingtheirapprenticeshipinPerth,willremainundertheguiding careoftheFathers.

ThusthePallottinesare amongstthefirstofall nativemissionsinW.A.to providesystematicvocationaltrainingforthe natives,equalineveryrespecttotherecognised standardsofthecitizensof thiscountry.

ThePallottinesgettheir namefromthefounder,BI VincentPallotti,apriestof thedioceseofRome.He wasthefirsttobebeatified duringthelastHolyYear, Jan.20,1950,exactly100 Yearsafterhisdeath.

ThePallottinesarea societyofpriestsandbrotherswho,byasolemnactof dedication,makethepromisesofpoverty,chastity, obedience,perseverance,and perfectcommunitylife. Theybecomemembers throughacontractthat bindsbynaturallaw.Al-

Averysuccessfulmission wasbroughttoacloseon SundaymorninglastatSt. Mary'sChurch,Carnarvon. Themission,whichwas preachedintwolanguages -EnglishandItalian-was conductedbytheRev.P. Abramo,0.M.I.,ofPickeringBrook.

Largecongregationsattendedduringtheweekand therewasabiggeneral Communionattheclosing Mass.OnSaturdayFather Abramoconsecratedthe parishtoOurLadyandat thefinalceremonyonSundaythepeoplerenewedtheirbaptismalvows,after whichthePapalblessing wasimparted. DuringhisstaythemissionervisitedeveryItalian homeintheparishandwas warmlyreceived.

LONDON,April19 (Radio,NC).-Catholic newspapermenattendeda specialMassofferedbyHisEminenceBernardCardinal Griffin,ArchbishopofWestminster,forajustand speedysettlementof Britain'snationalnewspaperstrike.About60 representativesofthebig Britishdailiesandofvariousnewsagenciesattended.

TheMasswasofferedthe daypriortotheannouncementthatthestrike,which hadlasted25days,hadbeenfinallysettled.

Articlesinthepopularpressrecentlysuggesta quiteremarkablepublicinterestandaprodigious publicconfusiononthesubjectofdivinehealing. Onemagazinehasdepictedinsharpphotography andlooseprosetheoperationsofafaithhealerin thiscity.Inanotherjournaladoctorveryproperly pointedoutthatagreatmany,ifnotall,ofsuchcures aremerelytheresultsofsuggestion.Theydealatalmostexclusivelywiththerectificationofnervous andfunctionaldisordersorwithpsychologicalmaladjustments.Frequentlythelatterexplainthe former.Tofreeapersonfromaphobiamaycause himtowalkagain.Butthedoctorinthisinstance madeacuriousmistake.Forhesaidthathedid notdisbelieveeventheclaimstobemadeforthe curingoforganicdisease.Hehadknownonesuch caseeffectedinayoungwomanafteravisittothe shrineatLourdes.

Itshouldbeobvious,butitisclearlynotso,that thereisallthedifferenceintheworldbetweena suffererrecoveringfromrheumatismunderthe stimulusofnaturalsuggestionorreligiousfervour excitedbyaneangelistandtheinstantaneouscure ofinoperablecancerasaresultofavisittoLourdes. Nointensityofsuggestioncouldexplainthedisappearanceofamalignanttumourorthereplace- mentofdestroyedtissueorthecreationofsome inchesofbone.WhathappensatLourdescannot beexplainedbyanynaturalagency,butmustbe attributedtothedirectpowerofGod.Thosewho presumetoexplaintheseextraordinarycuresbythe physicalactionoffaith(andfaiththeyconsidera purelynaturalfeelingwithnoadmixtureofthe supernatural)sometimesproceedonthefalse assumptionthatwhatisdoneatLourdeshasbeen donebymedicine,atleastbypsychotherapy,and thatthereforethereisnoneedofattributingthe curestothesupernatural.

Evenifsuchcurescouldbeeffectedbymedicine itwouldnotruleoutthepossibilityofsupernatural interventionoftheGrotto.Forifmedicinecancure, socanGodalso.Butnearlyallhonestpsychiatrists andfaithhealersconfesstheirhelplessnessinthe presenceoforganicdisease.Theyclaimsuccessof apartialnatureinnervousdisorders.Themiracles atLourdesarebynomeansinthesamecategoryas thestateofmindproducedbyapsychiatristorfaith healer.ThefaiththatbringsasufferertoLourdes isabeliefsimplyinGod'spowertohealhim.He canhavenoassuranceofacure,forheseesmany abouthimwhohavefailedtoreceivehealth.Moreover,hecancontributenothingtowardshisown cure.AtLourdesthereisasmuchresignationas hope.Thatisnotthementalexaltationoffaith. Many,whosehopeshavesoaredtocertainty,have goneawayuncured.

Ontheotherhand,therehavebeencasesat Lourdesinwhichthepersonscuredhavebeenwithoutfaithorreligiousfeling.Finally,thefactofthe cureofinfantsneedsnocomment.Thefinalword onLourdeswassaidbythelateFranzWerfel:"For thosewhobelieveinGodnoexplanationisnecessary;forthosewhodonotbelieveinGodnoexplana- tionispossible."Itmayevenbethatthemodern interestindivinehealingisanunhealthysymptom insofarasitexaltsthehealinganddiminishesthe divine.Thereareevidencesofrevivalsofbelief inmagicandothersuperstitiousexplanations. WhereasthehistoryofmiracleswithintheChurch hashadtheeffectofinfusingorconfirmingtrue supernaturalfaith.Itiscertainlyremarkablethat peoplewhoaresohard-headedabouttheother facetsofChristianbeliefhavesomuchgullibility intheswallowingofeveryallegedsignandwonder. MissSchaefersaidher organisationbelievesthat theonenessandindissolubilityofmarriage,freely enteredintoandvalid, havecontributedimmeasurably,notonlytothestabilityofthefamilybutalsoto arecognitionofthedignity andrightsofwomen.

TheAssemblyresolution originatedinoneadopted bytheStatusofWomen Commissionatitslastsessionwhichhadincorporated severalsuggestionsmade bytheWorldUnionofCatholicWomen'sOrganisations concerningcustomsand practicesaffectingthestatus ofwomen,basedonits studiesmadeinvariousdependentterritories.

MissZizzamiasaidthe WUCWOwaspleasedto learnfromitsstudiesin theseterritoriesthatsuch professionsasmidwifery, nursingandsocialwork, whichplaysoimportanta role,especiallyinareas wherethesocialstructure isbeingdeeplyaffectedby economicdevelopment,are beingencouragedanddue recognitionandprestigeaccordedthem.

Tohonourthe50thanniversaryofthe consecrationofHisGraceArchbishopDuhig, ofBrisbane,QueenslandCatholicswillcontributetoagoldenjubileefundthatwill enableastarttobemadeonnewCatholic men'sandwomen'scollegesattheQueens-

landUniversity.

Thiswasunanimouslydecidedatarecentmeetingof 300laymenrepresentingthe parishesofBrisbane,at whichtheCoadjutorArchbishop,ArchbishopO'Donnell,presided.

ArchbishopDuhigwill havebeen50yearsabishop onDecember10thisyear andhiswillbethefirst episcopalgoldenjubileein Australia.

ArchbishopO'Donnelltoldthemeetingthat,attherequestofmembersofthe hierarchyandwiththe consentofArchbishop Duhig,thejubileecelebrationswouldbeheldfrom November13to15.

TheChristianVoicemade thisdeclarationintheface ofdemandsfromsomeMoslemleadersthatCatholic schoolsshedtheirreligious characterandteachthe KoranandotherMoslem religiousscripturesto students.

IcannotbelievethatthedelegatesfromAsiaand Africahaveallthatsimplicity.Ifancythatitis bornofthepopulardelusionthatmysticismrules inAsiaandthatmysticsareproverbiallyunpractical.Tobejust,therewassomeelementofjustificationtobemadefromtherathervauntingremarks ofSirJohnKotelawalaofCeyloninhisjubilation athavinginducedChoutoparleywithAmericaon Formosa.ButitwouldbefoolishtoforgetthatSir JohnalsoaccusedtheSovietofperpetratingimperialisminEasternEuropeandaskedwhether AsatellitecountriesofEasternEuropewerenot coloniesoftheSovietUnion.

ATESIZEABLEAMOUNTOFDIRT

Itisnopartofmyadvocacytodenythewisdom ofChouEn-lai.Heisascunningandunscrupulous asthedevilheserves.Hewentasanatheistand aggressoramongmenwhoareforthemostpart religiousaccordingtotheirlights,andpeace-loving. Herecalledthefondhopesandtheheavyfallof Benes,"championofneutralism."Turkistanand theNorthCaucasusspokeinbitternessoftheir "colonised"byRussiaandChina,of thedenialofreligiousfreedom,of10,000mosques inruin,ofthemassdeportationsandthedestruction ofreligiousinstitutionsintheircountries.

ThePresswrotehappilyofChou's"majortactical victory"butCeylonspokeofthe"wolfofCommunistsubversioninthesheep'sclothingofpeacefultalks."ItwasfurtherstatedthattheCominform continuedtoflourishandtobeactive.Finallythe sincerityofChinawaschallengedinproposing peacefulco-existence.Inthefactofsuchabarrage, theextentandvehemenceofwhichhecouldscarcely haveanticipatedChouhadtomakeamountainof promises.

Sogreatandsweepingwerethepledgesextorted fromhimthatitwasforalltheworldlikethe reactionofaverybadboywhoindesperationwill swearhislifeawaytoavoidabelting.Chouput hishandonhisheartandsworebyallthegodsof theKremlinthatthewouldkeepthepeace;hewould negotiatewithAmericaregardingFormosa;hewould transgressothernations'soil"bynotoneinch";he wouldnotencourageCommunistsabroad.Itwas notexactlytheatmosphereofvictory.Itwasmore likeeatingthebreadofhumiliation.

Ifsexeducationhadanymajorbearingonsex behAviourouragewouldgodowninhistoryasa shininglight.Forneverbeforehassexbeenso blatantlyandpersistentlypeddled,bothasentertainmentandasseriousstudymatter.Asitis,our cryingneedisa10-yeartruceonallsexualtalk andthinking.Therestorationofreticencewould beapowerfulfactorintherehabilitationofvirtue.

Astogivingsexpamphletstochildren,theproposalislunatic.Theywillprobablynotbeshocked, havingsexthrustatthemfromeveryorganof publicopinion.Butitisapitythatschoolauthoritiesshouldmakethemselvesridiculousbysupplying matterwhichwillonlybecomethesubjectof sniggering,filthytalkandprurience.Itistime thatsucheducationistsbegantofindoutsomething aboutthenatureofchildren-andofchastity. thereisagravereflectiononthePressofthepast ofwhichthepresentmaynotbewhollyinculpable. Werethereportersofyesterdaywhollyinsensitive tothenationaldeclinemirroredinatumblingbirthrate?

Itseemstomethatthelargefamilydeclined becausethenon-Catholicreligionswhichhad formerlybuttressedsuchnaturalandChristian notionsofmarriageanddomesticvirtuehadexhaustedtheircapitaloftradition.Theywereasyet livinginthepenumbraofCatholiccustom,butthey lackedsufficientinnerstrengthandmoralauthority toresistthe"enlightenment"whichgatheredforce fromtheendofthe18thcentury.Non-dogmatic faithsweretendingmoreandmoretobecomemere religiousconventions.TheiradherencetotheBible asthesoleruleoffaithwasbadlyshakenbythe "highercriticism"andtherigidityofmoralcodes wassappedbythegrowingnotionsoffreedom actualisedinpoliticalandsocialreforms.

$.DespitethewidesatisfactionexpressedbySir JohnKotelawalaastotheoutcomeofBandoeng,he vasrealistenoughtoaddasariderthat,ofcourse, Chou'ssinceritywasyettobeseeninaction.He didn'thavelongtowaitevenforachangeinresolution.ForontheissueofFormosa-Chouveryshortly addedtheprovisothatanynegotiationsshouldnot affectChina'sdemandsforthe"liberation"of Taiwan.Thatwasequivalenttosayinghewould makeimpossibledemands.SothatAmericanconditionsandChiangKai-shek'sintransigencescarcely countforanything.

Thereweretwoissues,seemingly,thatstungChou intoriposte.OnewascriticismoftheSoviet,of whichhemadeafeebledefence.Theotherwasthe questionofcolonialismwhichhesignificantlydeclinedtodiscussatall.Despitehisobjectionsthe conferencecalledonallcolonialPowerstogrant freedomandinderndencetoallpeoples.

Itwasunfortu thatthedelegatesdidnotcontentthemselvesA thatgeneraldeclaration,forin becomingspecific,theiromissionsweremorenotable thantheirassertions.InsupportingIndonesia's claimtoWestIrian(DutchNewGuinea),theconferencewasmoreconsideratetoitshostthanofits host'sneighbours.Andofallthecolonialclaims theycouldhavebacked,theychosewhatwas probablytheleastsupportable.

Itisofcapitalinteresttothiscountrythatthe IndonesianclaimsinNewGuineaarewithoutfoundation.ItisnotthattheIndonesiansassuchare objectionableneighboursorthatweshouldmistrust theirintentions.Thecardinalobjectionfromthe pointofviewofAustraliansecurityisthatthis countrysimplycannotaffordtohaveunstable governmentonitscoastalperimeter.Evengranted thebriefdurationoftheirindependence,Indonesia hasshownitselfincapableofgoverningwhatit

Dr.Fieldisalsokeentofindoutwhythereisno longerthedeepreligiousspiritofearlygenerations, whichappliedreligiontolife.Hecontrastedthe changewhichhadtakenplaceherewithhisnative Kntuckywherereligionstillmattered.

Itisgoodthatastrangershouldpointouttous somethingtheabsenceofwhichwetakeforgranted. Itisnocoincidencethatthelargeruralfamilyand thespiritofappliedreligionshouldhavedisappeared, asitwere,together.Forifoneistoapplyreligion tolifetheobviousstartingpointisthesourceof life-inmarriageandthefruitfuluseofsex.

Perhapsitisdifficulttopointtoonegivencause forthesephenomena,butitseemstomethatthe commentofourmorningcontemporaryonthe natterwasatrifletoofaciletobethewholetruth: "Detailedrecordsofthelivesofthepioneerwomen arefewbecause,essentially,thedetailsdidnotcry outtoberecorded."Nodoubtcustomstalesand inanageofbigfamiliesandheroicself-sacrifice suchthingswerenotthoughtworthyofnote.But asthelargefamilybegantodwindleitmighthave occurredtodaughters,anyway,thattheywerenot ofsuchmettleastheirmothers.Inferentially,too,

Forallthatitisgoodtohearamodernaskforthe sagasofthegreat-heartedmotherswhohelped openupourgreatState.Itisnottoolatetotell theirstoriesandtosingtheirdeedsofrenown.As Dr.Fieldsaystherearerecordsenoughofthemen. ThecountriesrespresentedwereItaly,France, Spain,Switzerland,Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Holland,Canada,Australia, Malta,Scotland,Belgium andMexico.

AuxiliaryBishopFulton J.SheenofNewYork, AmericandirectoroftheSocietyforthePropagationof theFaithintheUnited Slates,whousuallyattends theannualmeetings,was unabletobepresentthis year.

Thefirstofthethree-day sessionswasdevotedtoreviewingtheworkoftheSocietiesforthePropagation oftheFaith.Accordingtl ArchbishopLeoneGiovanni B.Nigris,secretarygeneral, incomereceivedin1954was £400,000greaterthanin 1953,andsubsidiestothe missionsin1953amounted towellover£6,000,060.

ArchbishopNigrispointedout,however,thatincomeincreasesonlyarithmetically,whileexpenses riseingeometricprogression.

Thefirstmeetingwas openedbyHisEminence PietroCardinalFumasoni Biondi,prefectofthe SacredCongregationforthe PropagationoftheFaith, whosaidthattheworkof thePontificalSocietiesaims at"nolessthantheconversionoftheworld."

BONN,Germany,April 19(NC).-Theactionofthe StateofLowerSaxonyin challengingthevalidityof theConcordatwiththeHoly Seeplacesthereputation oftheFederalGermanRepublicinseriousjeopardy abroad,ChancellorKonrad Adenauerhasdeclared.

TheheadoftheBonn governmentspokeata ChristianDemocraticUnion electionrallyinLingen.Mr. Adenaueremphasised,that thefederalgovernment holdsthe1933Concordat withtheHolySeeasstill valid.Hedeclareditjust asbindingastreatiesbetweenthefederalrepublic andotherpowers.

Thequestionofwhether theConcordatisstillvalid isnowbeforetheGerman SupremeConstitutional Court.

TheConcordatcallsfor maintenanceofthetraditionalsystemofseparate ProtestantandCatholic schoolsinGermany.The socialist-controlledgovernmentofLowerSaxonyhas violatedthisprovisionby passinglegislationcalling fora "unified"school system.
