ManyEducatedPeopleWorshipWhyNotEmploy TheDevilInLondonTo-daySacramentals?

TheRev.L.Rumble, M.S.C.,wasrecentlyques-tionedaboutdiabolicalpos- session.

RecentlytheAnglicanBishopRobin,ofAdelaide, saidthatsomementalillnessescouldbeduetopossessionbyevilspiritswhich, inturn,couldbeexpelled bymethodsofChristian exorcism.

R.:Noonecouldreasonablyobjecttothatstatementasitstands.As AldousHuxleyremarked, inabookpublishedin1952, althoughbeliefindevilpossessionwasexaggerated intheMiddleAges, owing toinadequateknowledgeof physiologyandpsychology, itcannotberuledoutentirelyasmerelyanancient superstition.

Hesaysthatitshouldbe treatedasaworkinghypothesis,cautiouslyentertained,whereotherexplan-ationsareinadequate.

Hedeclaresthatinvestigationsintowhatareknown asthephenomenaofextrasensory-perceptionsuchas clairvoyanceandtelepathy pointto largelymentalprocesses independentofspace, timeandmatter;andthat sciencecertainlyhasnothingagainsttheexistenceof evildisembodiedspiritsor devilswhocanexerta banefulinfluenceonhuman beings.

Q.:BishopRobinwasaccusedofencouragingideas only"onestreetawayfrom beliefinwitchcraft."

R.:Thereisnothingwrongwithbelievingintheexistenceofwitchcraft.Needlesstosay,theBishopinno wayintendedtoencourage indulgenceinwitchcraft,a verydifferentmatter.But itwouldbeamistake,even ifonefeltcompelledtodismissnine-tenthsofthereportedcasesofwitchcraftin historyasnotgenuine,to

denytheexistenceofwitchcraftanddevil-possession altogether.

Quiteapartfromthecases ofdevil-possession,andthe exorcismorcastingoutwith prayerofevilspiritsfrom itsvictims, asrecordedin theNewTestament, subsequenthistoryrecordsexampleswhichleavenoroom fordoubtastothereality ofthephenomenon.

Q.:WhenBishopRobin saidthatpeopleobjectedto theideaof"exorcism,"but nottotheideaof"spiritual healing,"hewasattacked bythe"Onlooker,"inthe "Sun-Herald,"ofJanuary9, whosaidthat"beliefin spiritualhealingisone thing,butthatbeliefin demonsascausativeagents andtheirexorcismisquite another."

R.:The"Onlooker"was mistaken."SpiritualHealing"isageneraltermwhichcanincludethetreatment ofmanykindsofdisabilities.Inanswertothe spiritoffaithandthepray-

ersofpatientandpracti- tioner,Godmaygranta cureofnaturalphysicalor mentaldiseases.

Buttherecanbeafflictions, notduetomerely naturalcauses, afflictions arisingfromtheinfluence ofevil fromspirits;andrelief thesecanalsocome withinthescopeofspiritual healing.

Q.:The"Onlooker"said thattalkofdemonsandof exorcismdoes"shockand evenrepelthemodern mind."

R.:Hehasnogroundsfor thinkinghisownideason thesubjectanindicationof the"modernmind"onthe matter.Itmaybethat manypeopleseldomadvert totheproblem,andhave noparticularconvictions aboutit.

Buttheirviewsarecharacterisedchieflybyanabsenceofthought.When thesubjectisbroughtto theirnotice,theyarerather startledthan"shocked"and "repelled"-except,of

course,bytheevjlinvolved inthediabolicalphenomenaofwhichtheyaremade aware.

OnMarch30,1948,the Britishpressannouncedthe deathof Price,thefamousHarry founderoftheCouncilforPsychicalResearch atLondonUniversity.Price wasaspecialistindemonology.

Andhesaidthatblack magic,witchcraftandthe invocationofthedevilwere morewidespreadinLondontodaythanatanytime intheMiddleAges.

Thatsuchdiabolicalprac- ticesarenotinspiredbythe devilismuchmoredifficult tobelievethanthatthey are, whateverthe"Onlooker"imaginesthe"modern mind"tobeonthissubject.

WhyNationalisationMustFail

Sir,-ItwouldbeinterestingtoknowLabour'spresentpolicywithregardto thenationalisationofallthe meansofproduction,distributionandexchangeas advocatedbyKarlMarx.

AfewLabourpoliticians aredefinitelyagainstthis proposal, buttherankand fileofthemovementwho appeartohavemostofthe say, areconvincedthatthe poorarepoorbecausethe richarerich, andthat nationalisationistheonly remedy, andmustbeaccompaniedbyheavytaxation.

Itdoesnotoccurtothe advocatesofthispolicythat possiblythereisaflawin oureconomicsystem, and thatthetotalamountof moneyavailableisinsufficientfortheneedsofthe citizensinanygivenperiod oftime.

Hereisthemathematical reasonwhynationalisation asapolicymustfail,and eventuallyleadthenation todisaster.

Inanormallywelldevelopedcountryweexpecttofindmanufacturing, producing, dustriesdistributinginandbanking. Now, ifthe dustriesmanufacturinginwishtopaytheir way, theymustincludein thepriceofeacharticlecertainitemsagainstwhichno moneyisdistributedin courseofmanufacture.

Thisisnotbyanymeans anunreasonablefigure,and itsignifiesthatgoodsmanufacturedforacostof£100, mustbesoldfor£.125ifthe manufacturerwishestoremaininbusiness.

Presumingthatthemanufacturingindustrysucceeds inpayingitsway,itcan producinganddistributing onlydosobyobtaining that25percent.fromthe industries,leavingthem shortoffunds-bankruptin fact.

Howwouldthenation standassoleownerand employer, andwhatchance wouldithaveofdeveloping thecountryandliquidating theNationalDebt?
