LastNovemberinthissessionIpointedoutthattherewasnotatittleoftruthinthe accusationthattheCatholicChurchorCatholicActionwereintenton"capturing"the AustralianLabourParty.Sincethen,onseveraloccasions,andespeciallyoflate,I hovebeenaskedbylistenerstocommentonsomepointinthecontinuingdispute.But Ihaverefrainedfromspeakingonthesubjectlestthissession,whichissolelyconcerned withmattersoffaithandmorals,mightseemtodealwithaquestionwhichwasmore politicalthanmoral.However,sincethe"CatholicAnswer"willnotbeheardforsome monthsIproposethiseveningtosayafewwordsontheessentialpointinthecontroversy,andshallleavepoliticstoyouandtothepoliticians.
Themainfactsofthe casearethese.Aboutten yearsagoCommunistshad succeededingettinga strangleholdonmanyofthe keyunionsinAustralia, andseemedonthehigh roadtofurthervictory,for therankandfileworkers weretoolethargictoattend unionmeetingsandthus ensurethatunionpolicy reflectedtheirviews.
Alarmedatwhatwas happening,anumberof men,Catholics,non-Catholicsandnon-Christians, quiteirrespectiveofthereligiousviews,decidedto resistthiswhite-antingof decentLabourbyantiLabourandanti-Australian influences.Thesemenformedthemselvesintowhat weretermed"Industrial Groups."Nowitisimportanttorecallthatthe "IndustrialGroups"were calledintobeingattherequestoftheofficialexecutiveoftheLabourParty. Theywerenotajuntaor pressure-grouptoleratedby theLabourParty.

RecentlytheAnglicanBishopRobin,ofAdelaide, saidthatsomementalillnessescouldbeduetopossessionbyevilspiritswhich, inturn,couldbeexpelled bymethodsofChristian exorcism.
R.:Noonecouldreasonablyobjecttothatstatementasitstands.As AldousHuxleyremarked, inabookpublishedin1952, althoughbeliefindevilpossessionwasexaggerated intheMiddleAges,owing toinadequateknowledgeof physiologyandpsychology, itcannotberuledoutentirelyasmerelyanancient superstition.
Hesaysthatitshouldbe treatedasaworkinghypothesis,cautiouslyentertained,whereotherexplan-ationsareinadequate.
Hedeclaresthatinvestigationsintowhatareknown asthephenomenaofextrasensory-perceptionsuchas clairvoyanceandtelepathy pointto largelymentalprocesses independentofspace,timeandmatter;andthat sciencecertainlyhasnothingagainsttheexistenceof evildisembodiedspiritsor devilswhocanexerta banefulinfluenceonhuman beings.

R.:Thereisnothingwrongwithbelievingintheexistenceofwitchcraft.Needlesstosay,theBishopinno wayintendedtoencourage indulgenceinwitchcraft,a verydifferentmatter.But itwouldbeamistake,even ifonefeltcompelledtodismissnine-tenthsofthereportedcasesofwitchcraftin historyasnotgenuine,to
denytheexistenceofwitchcraftanddevil-possession altogether.
Quiteapartfromthecases ofdevil-possession,andthe exorcismorcastingoutwith prayerofevilspiritsfrom itsvictims,asrecordedin theNewTestament,subsequenthistoryrecordsexampleswhichleavenoroom fordoubtastothereality ofthephenomenon.

Buttherecanbeafflictions,notduetomerely naturalcauses,afflictions arisingfromtheinfluence ofevil fromspirits;andrelief thesecanalsocome withinthescopeofspiritual healing.

Buttheirviewsarecharacterisedchieflybyanabsenceofthought.When thesubjectisbroughtto theirnotice,theyarerather startledthan"shocked"and "repelled"-except,of

OnMarch30,1948,the Britishpressannouncedthe deathof Price,thefamousHarry founderoftheCouncilforPsychicalResearch atLondonUniversity.Price wasaspecialistindemonology.
Inanofficialreport,spon- soredbyLondonUniversity, hedeclaredthattherewere manygroupsofhighlyeducatedmenandwomen inLondonitselfwhoregu-larlyworshippedthedevil.
Andhesaidthatblack magic,witchcraftandthe invocationofthedevilwere morewidespreadinLondontodaythanatanytime intheMiddleAges.
Thatsuchdiabolicalprac- ticesarenotinspiredbythe devilismuchmoredifficult tobelievethanthatthey are,whateverthe"Onlooker"imaginesthe"modern mind"tobeonthissubject.

Thereissomethingradicallyawrywiththe approachofsportswriterstotheirsubject.One meadsofEnglishCricketorAustralianTennisin phraseswhichsuggestthatthesearedeitiestobe known,lovedandservedaboveallelse.Whenwe winwecrow;whenwelosewehaveathousand excuses.Butitisquiteclearthatitistheresult andnotthegamewhichmatters.

HUMANISMATLOWESTEBB
Professionalismpilesonthesedefectsthecrowningignominyofmoneyandsomeofthecorruption whichpelfengenders.Andwhilethedistinction ispreservedbetweenamateursandprofessionals itissoniceadistinctionthatthemosteruditephilosophercouldnotdrawtheline.IntheSovietand America,thecompetitionhasbecomesodeadly thatathleticismisafull-timeoccupationand sportsmenaretreatedinverymuchthesameway asstudcattle.Thegamehasbecomeabranchof eugenicscience.
Whatismoretothepoint,however,istheraising ofspectatorshiptotherankofapermanentstatus. Itisdeplorablethatsomanypaytowatchwhen theycouldbehavingalotoffunandexercising theirownmuscles.Allthishasengenderedthe viewoflifewhichweattributetothe"goodsport." Thiswholesome,ubiquitousfellowembodiesthe
religionoftoday.Itisasimplecreed-hedoes nobodyanyharm.Thatisnotquitethesamething assuggestingthathedoesanybodyanygood.But itisthepopularsubstituteforChristianity.Itis humanismatitslowestebb.
Thegoodsportphilosophyhaspermeatedour countrytoanalarmingertent.Thereisinvolvedinit nocriticismordenialoforganisedreligionorindeed ofanythingelse.Itissimplyaghastlyspiritual vacuuminwhichdrainsawayallcreativeeffort,all higheraspirationsandallintelligentstriving.Itis foundedonslothandfedbytime-wastingand generalprofligacy.'Religiouslyitisknownasindifferentismandsociallyasirresponsibility.It showsupstarkandtragicagainsttheexternalthreat whichismountingagainstAustraliaandagainstthefearfulpoliticalinstabilityofthemoment.It isthumb-twiddlinginthefaceofnationalperil.It oughttobekickedhardandoften.
Attentionhasalreadybeendrawninthese columnstothestatementofMr.F.E.Chamberlain, shortlyaftertheLabourRumpConferencein Hobart,thattheissuewhichdividestheA.L.P.is notprimarilythequestionofleadershipbutthatof thebasicphilosophyoftheparty.Unhappily,asthe disputeprogresses,itbeginstoappearthatthetwo problemsareinextricablyboundupwithone another.
Dr.Evatthasproclaimedhimselfthefonsetorigo ofLabourprinciplesandifthecountryatlargeis tojudgebyhispitiableforeignpolicy,thenthe Labourplatformisindistinguishablefromthestrict party-lineoftheCommunists.
IncollaborationwithDr.JohnBurton,Dr.Evatt hasadvocateda"trusttheCommunist"policy,which involvedturningourbackonAmerica,ignoringthe RedthreatfromMalaya,admittingRedChinato U.N.O.,andingenerallettingtheChineseCommunistsdoastheywill.Andevenifwefeelwe candismisssuchadvocacyasthedesperatediversionarytacticsofamanwithhisbacktothewall, wemustyetconsidertowhatextentsuchaberrationsstemfromthemouldytraditionsofSocialism.
Thiskindofthingsimplywillnotdo,because thedangertotheimmediatenorthofthiscountry isbecomingmoreobvioustotheaverageAustralia. And,moreover,thePrimeMinisterhasreturned fromhistravelsabroadwithapolicywhichisplainly theonenecessaryforoursurvival.Topitagainstit anadvocacywhichisunreal,inimicaltonational interestandunpopularistotiltatwindmills.
ButwhiletheofficialobjectiveonSocialism remainsunchanged,thisdogged,unreasoningadherencetoapasttraditionwillrecurwheneveran irresponsiblemancomestotheforefrontofLabour leadership.
TheinadequacyanddemodednatureofsocialisationisseeminglystirringdisquietinLabourranks, fortherearereportsthattheobjectivewassecretly rewordedattheHobartRumpConference.Ithad alreadyundergoneaslightmodificationin1951as toitsscope-"totheextentnecessarytoeliminate exploitation."Accordingtopressreportsthephrase -"inaccordancewiththeprinciplesofaction methodsandprogressivereformssetoutintheplat- form"-hasbeenadded.
Butwiththeprovisoorwithoutit,Labourisnot facinguptothefactthatsocialisationmeansvesting yetgreaterandundefinedpowersinthehandsof centralgovernment.Theymayfeelhappyabout suchapositionwhilemenoftheirownhueguide thecountry.Butwouldtheyseriouslyriskthe positionwiththeOppositioninpower?
Thereisnodisguisingthefactthateveryaccretion ofpoliticalpowerismadeattheexpenseofthe libertyoftheindividual.ItistimethatLabour bethoughtitselfthatthelibertiesofthesubjectare notbestprotectedbypoliticalpaternalismbutby theextensionofeconomicfreedomtofamilyunits.
Eveninthesphereoflarge-scaleindustryand corporationsthesubstitutionofgovernmentalfor privatecontrolwillnottouchtheheartofthe problemwhichisthehumanoneofdepersonalisation.Itgrowsclearereverydaythatthesolution offeredinthePapalencyclicals-admittingthe workerstoashareintheownership,management andprofitsofindustry-oughttobetried.ItcertainlyshouldbeconsideredbyLabour,whichis otherwisesociallybankrupt.

DespitetheeffortsoftheRedpuppetregimesof EasternEuropetorepresenttheirrepressiveand coercivemeasuresaspoliticalinoriginandintent, itisnolongerpossibletoconcealthatthereal motivebehindtheirtenuouspretextsisthedestructionoftheChristianFaith.Itisworthyofremark that,althoughStalinisallegedtohavesneeredat thePope'slackofmilitarydivisions,nowhereoutsideofSovietterritoryhavetheCommunistsdared topersecutereligionassuch.Ineachandevery instancesomepseudo-politicalchargeistrumpedup tojustifytheclosingofCatholicschools,thesup- pressionoftheCatholicpress,ortheimprisonment andmartyrdomofCatholicbishopsandpriests.In Yugoslavia,ArchbishopStepinacwastriedandconvictedasatraitorwhenalltheworldknewthathe was Likewise,thecountry'soutstandingchampionandpatriot. inHungary,thedicewasloadedagainst thePrince-Primatebecausehehadstoodoutforthe rightsoftheChurchandthefreedomofthecommon man;butthepreposterouschargesagainsthimwere thathewasnofriendofCaesar.
ThisCommunistreticenceisprimarilydictatedby themoralsofexpediency,forineachoftheEastern EuropeannationswheretheSoviet"yes-men"rule, theCatholicChurchiseitherthechiefsocialforce oratleastahardcoreofresistance.Hadanyone doubtedthattherealstruggleofourtimesisbetweenChristianityandCommunism,thereisample proofathandinEuropethattheonly"reactionary" forcewhichtheRedsfearandtrytoliquidateisnot apoliticalpartybuttheCatholicChurch.Insofar aspoliticsisconcerned,thereisatragicstoryof failureallalongtheline.TheSocialistshaveeither thrownintheirlotwithCommunism,asinthe Italianelections,orhavesincerelytriedtocooperatewithitandbeendevouredasinCzechoslovakia.Theonlyperseveringpoliticalresistance hascomefromthepeasantparties,andtheirinspirationhasbeensolelygroundedinCatholicsocial theoryandpractice.InthefaceoftheRedterror. asbutashortwhilebeforeinthefaceoftheNazis, thespiritofthesubjugatednationshasbeenembodiedinthepersonofagreatandfearlesschurchman.Thebishopandnotthepoliticianisthesymbol ofhiscountry'sresistancetotyrannyandofitswill tofreedom.
Atthisdistancefromthesebarbarousevents theremaybeatendencyamongsometorelyrather smuglyonOurLord'spromisethatHisChurch wouldneverfail.That,ofcourse,istrue,buta universalCommunistvictorycouldreducethe Churchinnumbersandinfluencetothecatacomb stage.Moreover,weoughttorememberatthis gravehourthepracticalimplicationsoftheMystical BodyofChrist.Sinceweareallmembersofone Body,onepartcannotsufferwithoutinvolvingthe other.WhatweinAustraliacanchieflydotohelp theChurchSufferinginEuropeistopraythatGod willgivethegracesoffortitudeandconstancyto Hismanyconfessorsandmartyrs.We,inourturn, willshareinthemeritsoftheirsufferings.Inthis connectionwerejoicetohavethesympathyofour AnglicanbrethrensograciouslyandsincerelyexpressedbytheArchbishopofCanterbury.His Grace'srecognitionofthepresent"deadlystruggle" betweenCommunismandChristianityisasignthat Christianmen,wherevertheyarefound,mustclose theirrankstomeettheonslaughtofthismost terribleenemy.For,astheHolyFatherhaspointed out,thereissufficientfundamentalagreementofall menofgoodwilltouniteinpreservingthosesocial valuesandinstitutionswhichChristianitycreated andCommunismimperils.
