Indeed,warwouldnotbesofutilehaditbrought totheworldatleastsomeconvictionthatitscauses proceededinthelastanalysisfromthefailureof individualsandnationstoacknowledgethesove- reigntyofChristasKing;andhence,impervious aliketothedemandsofjusticeandcharity,had reducedWesterncivilisation(ofwhichtheCatholic Faithhadbeenthechiefformativeelement)toa conditionofjunglewar.Buttheworldhassofar lostcontactwiththeChristianbeliefthatitcanno longersublimateitssufferings,toservethecauseof Christbywayofexpiation.Onthecontrary,itis onlyembitteredbypainandisthrownintoyet greaterdesolationandperplexityastowhetherlife hasanymeaningorpurpose.
