Hencetheobliquemethodisbeingattempted.If theycansuppresstheconfessionalschoolstheywill succeed,perhapsinacoupleofgenerations,indeChristianisingtheirpeople.Buthereagainthe methodistortuousandthepretextsplausible.Wherethereligiousschoolshavebeensubsidised, governmentssaystheycannolongercarrythe burden.Wheresubsidieshavenotexisted,asin Australia,nopoliticianisbigenoughtosuggestthey should.Sotheendresultenvisagedisathorough- goingsecularisation,oflife.And,sadtorelate,there aresecretandsinisterforcesinthedemocracies impatienttoseetheCatholicschoolsbroughtdown inruin.InBelgium,theArgentineandFrancethese pressuregroupshavenotalwaysbeenatgreatpains toconcealtheiridentitynortheirassociationwith revolutionaryelements.InAustraliathesecrecy isprofoundbutofficialsilencecansometimesbe louderandmoreeloquentthantheboastsofthe godless.

IFTHEDEVILHELDAUDIENCE..

Itappearstomelamentablywoollytosaythat whatmattersinthiscaseistherighttotraveland thatthepurposeofthetravellingisirrelevant. BISHOPSAPPLAUDEONSIDELINES

ThepoorRomanistshavebeendeniedthis singularfreedom.Intheircramped,obscurantist fashiontheyimaginethatathingcanonlydevelop accordingtoitsnature,thatlibertycanonlybe withinthecontextofrationality.Ifalionhasthe earsofadonkeytheymayfeelithasbeenashade toofree,thatsomethinghasbeentryingtomakean assofit.Yetamonstrosityofthatsortisscarcely strangerthantheChristianwhothinkshemayat tthesametimebeaCommunist.Thatisagrave positionbecauseitproveseitherthathedoesnot understandthenatureofChristianityontheone handandCommunismontheother,orthatheisa humbug.Butwhatisonetothinkwhenonefinds venerableBishopsonthesidelinescheeringsucha weirdandrevoltingspectacle?

Fortheaverage,de-Christianisedmaninthe streetthereissomeexcuseforhisfailuretounderstandthefoulandlethalnatureofMarxismin theoryandinpractice.Inthedemocraciesthe Communistshavenotdaredtolaybaretheinner natureoftheiraimsandmethods.Theyhavebeen amosteffectivesecretsocietyasregardsthemasses. AndtheliberalPresswhichhasswungbelatedly againstthemhasdonelittleornothingtoexpose Communisminitsinnernature.Theyopposeitbut forthewrongreasons.Theylackpurityofintention. Ignorancecannotbeacceptedasapleaforthething iswritlargeandlongintheRedtext-books.

ButwhenmenofeducationsuchastheAnglican Bhhupscangrowsotenseandindignantastheydo inthepresentinstance,whileglossingabsolutely overtheCommunistaspectofthematter,one wonderswhetherknowledgeorsincerityislacking. Itcanonlyseemlikederelictionofdutytoonewho hasexperiencedthegenuinepastoralcarewhichit istherightandthedutyofbishopstogive.

Dr.H.V.Evatt,havingneatly"rigged"the Hobartconference,andsoldoutonhisfriendsinthe PartywhohaddestroyedtheCommuniststrangleholdonitsindustrialwing,isnowbaskinginthe ersatzsunlightofanillusory"victory"andgiving tonguetoarighteousnesswhichsitsuneasilyupon

him.ThetrueLabourmenwhohavefoughtthe evilswhichEvatt'sincapacityasleaderbrought uponthemovementlikeanincurableblighthave beenstabbedintheback.Itisagreatmomentfor theCommunistsandtheirsympathisers.Likea precursorofevilEvatthasmadestraightthepath fortheirreturntotakecontrolofthegreatpolitical movementwhosevague,old-fashionedSocialist aspirationsconditioneditforevensuchatragic fate.

Themenwhohavesufferedfortheirbeliefin translatingLabourprinciplesalongthelinesof NaturalLawandChristiansocialtrendsneedhave noregretsandstilllessanyunworthyinclinations towardsvengeanceTimeandaverybriefduration ofitwillbringthemredress.ForjustasDr.Evatt waspreparedtoseethePartycleavedforhispersonalambitions,sotheCommunistswillhaveno compunctioninthrowingthisvain,shifty,ineptman tothewolvesoncehehasservedhispurposein reinstatingtheminfull,undisputedcontrolofthe keyunionsandtheFederalLabourmachinery.

Itwillbeinteresting,ifindeedhegetsthatfar, toseetowhatalliesEvattwillturnwhenhe realisesthatheisnotinthesaddleandiscalled upontorespondtotheMarxistrein.(Thissupposition,ofcourse,giveshimthebenefitofthedoubt aboutthesincerityofhisintentionsandmotives.)

HavingalienatedtheRightandbeingatthemercy oftheLeft,Dr.Evattwillbeunconscionablyhurt tofindthathehasbeenunabletocreateaCentreof trueLabour.Hewilldiscovertoolateandwith bitternessthattheonlythinginthecentreofhis politicalroadishispoliticalgrave.Hewillgodown toitunwept,unhonouredandunsung.

Ifanyhonestmancanbefoundtowriteanepitaph overthatmound,hemaywellscrawl:"Herelies thecaputmortuumoftreachery,thedrossofopportunism."Anditwillbeagravefromwhichthere willbenoresurrection.

Meantime,asIhavesaid,Dr.Evattsunshimself intheself-adulationofthesuccessofhischicanery. Hepreensandstrutsbeforethecontemplationof hispetdelusion.Hehastheoutrageousgalltotalk of"revitalising"theLabourmovementasamurderermightvainlyaspiretore-animatethecorpse hehasslain.GodknowstheLabourmovement needsrevitalisationasdoourpoliticsgenerally. Labourhasbeeninsoreneedofsomeoneofclear thoughtandcoolcouragetocutawayfromitthe mustytraditionsofaSocialismwhichhaseverywheresuccumbedbeforetheonslaughtofitscrude, bigger,morelogicalbrother-Communism.Since theissueofourtimeshasunmistakablycrystallised intothedefinitivechoicebetweenCommunismand Christianityitwasmorethanalittleanachronistic tofindthatLabourhadnotasinglephilosopherto tellitstoilingranksthatthepastwasadeadone andthatitmustalignitselfwithoneorotherofthe livingforcesofthepresent.

TheMinisterforImmigration,beingnofool,is apparentlycognisantofthisastonishingneglect. HencehehasrequiredoftheAnglicanArchbishop ofMelbourne,whoistheOrdinaryoftheRev.Mr. Glover,thathe"sponsor"hisitinerantvicar.And Dr.Booth,beingalsolonginthetooth,hasdeclined tohavehisChurchofficiallytiedupwithMr. Continuedatfootofnextcolumn.

Glover'spoliticalactivities.ArchbishopBoothis seeminglyamanwhoissensitiveoftheridicule broughtuponhisChurchbysuchamanastheRed Dean.Heisnotunnaturallyloathetoseelesserfry repeattheodium.Itisallverywellfortheother prelatestobebeatingthebigdrum,butitisDr. BoothwhomustdancethetuneandDr.Boothisa poordancer.TheAnglicanArchbishopofMelbourne hasprovedwiserinhisgenerationthanhispeers.

GreatstressisalsogiventothefactthatMr. Glovercannotbyanystretchofimaginationbea threattosecurity.Perhapsthisclaimistrue,but onemayquiteeasilyconsiderthereverendgentlemantobeathreattosanity.Inheaven'sname, whatgoodpurposecanbeservedbyaChristian clergyman'sassociationwithopenandcovert atheists?Inourownrankswehaverecentlywitnessedthemiserablefailureofthe"priest-worker" experiment,whereabouthalfofthezealousmen whosetouttore-ChristianisethepagansofFrance finishedupindefianceoftheChurch'sauthority,if theydidnotactivelyjoinforceswithherenemies.

CHRISTIANSSUFFERDISADVANTAGE

WhenAnglicanstalkofbeingableto"afford" CommunistswithintheirfellowshipIfeelitis becausetheydonotrealisetheoverwhelming advantagesfromapracticalworldlypointofview whichMarxismhasoverChristianity.Wherewe areboundbyamoralcode,theyarefreewiththe elasticityofexpediency;wherewemustclingto truth,theymayuselyingasanormalweaponin diplomacy,propagandaandpolicyspeeches;where weareenmeshedwithconsiderationsofforebearance,honour,justiceandtherest,theyareutterly cynicalandcontemptuousofthebasicprinciples whichunderlieWesterncivilisation.Insuchacontestwesufferahandicapwhichwouldbeintolerable ifthespiritwasnoteventually%;ctoriousover matter.

ItmayevenbethatMr.Gloverhimselfdoesnot havetheinsighttounderstandthatheisnomatch fortheclovenhoofshewillfindunderthegreen baizeoftheStockholmconferencetable.Hemay beliterallyaninnocentabroad.Thealternativeis unpleasant,foronedoesnotliketothinkhisworst enemycouldbeamanofthekidneyofHewlett JohnstonortheRev.Dr.Hromadka.Butwhatever thestatusoftheRev.Mr.Glover,itisagreatshame thattheAnglicanbishopsshouldlendtheirprestige andrespectability(astheymustdointheeyesof thegeneralpublic)toamiserable,spuriousRedtrick toavertworldattentionfromtheaggressionthey arealreadyabouttoperpetrate.TheAnglican officialshavemadethemselvesegregiousinthisway alltoooften.Soonerorlaterthepublic(andtheir ownpeople)willbegintoinquirewhetheronecan besosilly,soofteningoodfaith!

ThepresentfragmentationofthePartyis relativelyunimportantunlessitportendsthelong overduecrisiswhenLabourcanclarifyitsmindas tothethingsforwhichitstands.Thesocialisation objectiveissovaguethatnoonewouldmissitifit gotlostinthewrangle.Butitistheissueonwhose interpretationLabourwilldecidewhichsideithas choseninthebattleforthemindsofmen.IfEvatt canfoisthisnotionsonthePartynothingwillhave beenmadeplainexceptthattheA.L.P.willbemade thetamepoodleofMarxism.Ifhisopponentsprevail,orbuildoverhismound,thereisaprospect thatsoundandChristianprinciplesandpolicieswill appearforthefirsttimeinthisnation.
