MissMarieStopes(oftencalledDoctor Stopes-andsheISadoctor,too,inphilosophyandscinnce,NOTinmedicine)has beenalong-standingadvocateofcontraception-infact,sheisoneofthebest knowncontraceptionadvocatesintheworld.
Inanarticleofhers whichanAustralianpaper inflictedonitspublicas partofaMarriageGuidance programme,MissStopesran truetoform.Herarticle containedastrongadvocacy ofcontraceptionandaterse dismissaloftiletruemoral positionastaughtbythe CatholicChurch.
Itmaybeofinterestto thoseofourreaderswho sawthedangerousandugly Stopesarticletogoback overtheyearstotheoccasionwhenDr.Stopes sought-andobtained-justiceinconnectionwithan attackmadeonherbecause ofherbirthcontrolactivities.
Inwasin1922thatDr. HallidaySutherlandpublishedabook,"BirthControl-aStatementofChristianDoctrineagainstthe Neo-Malthusians,"and madeastrongcriticismof thecampaigninLondoncf MissMarieCharlotteCarmichaelStopes(who,in privatelife,isMrs.HumphreyVerdonRoe).
OnMay11ofthatyear shetookoutasummons foraninjunctionagainst thebook.OnDr.Sutherland'sundertakingtojustify thewordsofwhichshe complained,shecommenced anactionagainstthepublishersandDrSutherland intheKing'sBenchDivisionoftheHighCourtof JusticeofLondontorecoverdamagesforlibeland toobtainaninjunction againstitsrepetition.

Someofthemareship's officerswhohavedodged theircompanionsallowed ashoreforanevening's shoppingandenjoyment.
Somedecidetostayand seekpoliticalasylum,like the11whowalkedashore lastyearandwerehelped byFatherZelechowski spirituallyandmaterially whileawaitinginprison theBritishauthorities'decisiontoacceptthem.

Wewereonthesideofa finegreenvalley,studded hereandtherewithtrees, andcutbynumerousrivulets.Ihadretiredfromthe noisewhenIbeheldanelephantandhercalfatthe endofthevalley,abouttwo milesdistant.
Thecalfwasrollingin themud,andthedamwas standingfanningherself withgreatears.AsIlookedatthemthroughmy glass,Isawalongstring ofmyownmenappearing ontheothersideofthem, andSekwebucameandtold methatthesemenhadgone offsaying,"Ourfatherwill seetodaywhatsortofmen hehasgot." Foreignerswhoinrecentyearshavebeen visitingYugoslaviainincreasingnumbers usuallyreceivetheimpressionthatthe YugoslavPeople'sRepublic,thoughstill backwardinmanyrespects,isonitsway towardsadoptingWesternstandardsof civilisation,and,inparticular,theWestern conceptionofdemocracy.
Someforeignvisitors haveevenbeendeludedby thesightofcrowdedchurchesintoaccepting'theBelgradeGovernment'softrepeatedclaimthatfull freedomofreligionexists everywhereinthecountry.
However,thewriterhas metmanypersonsthoroughlyfamiliarwithcurrent conditionsinTitolandwho telladifferentstory.Among themisaYugoslavCatholic artistopposedtotheCommunistregimebutallowed abroadbecauseherpaintingsaresupposedtospread thefameofRed"culture."
Theseinformantsarenot deceivedintoacceptingthe claimthatthepeopleof Yugoslavianowenjoya muchgreaterfreedomthan theydidbeforeTito'sbreak withMoscowandthatlife hasingeneralbecomemuch morebearable.
Theydeny,especially,the claimthatYugoslaviamust nowberegardedassomethinglikeacrossbetween theEastandtheWest,that itisnolongerareally Communist-dominatedcountry.
Thatsuchimpressions shouldprevailamong foreignvisitorsisunderstandableinviewofthe factthatfewofthemspeak thelocalidiom,andthat eveniftheydothereislittlechanceoftheirmeeting aresidentwhoisunsuspecting orcourageous enoughtotellacomplete
strangerwhatisreallygoing on.
Also,theCommunistregimeismakinggreatefforts tomakeforeignvisitors feelwelcomeandsafeand tohidethetruepicture fromview.
Butthetruthis,ofcourse, thatinspiteofcertainrelaxationsofcontrol,par- ticularlyintheeconomic sphere,andofa"go-slow" ordertothepoliticalpolice, Yugoslaviaremainsinthe clutchesofherCommunist rulerswhose"rapproache- ment"totheWestwas promptedbyeconomicnecessitiesaswellaspersonalgrievancesagainstMoscow andinnowayaffectedthe Communistorthodoxyofthe Belgraderegime.
Thisisproven,inthe eyesoftheoverwhelming majorityoftheYugoslav people,bythewarwhich theregimecontinuesto wageagainstChristianity and,infact,againstanyre- ligiousfaith,withthesame ruthlessnessastheSoviet rulersandtheirsatellites.
Onerememberstheexecutionorofficially-condoned murderofmanypriestsandthecontinuedimprisonment ofmanymore.
Oneremembersalsothe regime'seffortstoisolate theBishops,toundermine theirauthority,andtosever allcommunicationbetween theChurchinYugoslavia andRome.
