Tojudgefromthenobleforestsofpinewhichare beingwantonlydestroyedtoprovidepulpforthe printingofsexmagazines,cruecomics,tosay nothingoftheoutpouringsoftheCommunistPress andofthemultifarioussects,theCatholicoutput" isaverymildandcircumscribedaffair.Butitis notenoughtolamentthisasafact.Itisnecessary toenquirewhy,inviewofournumbersand influenceinthecommunityitshouldbeso.Doesit springfromignorance,fromapathy,fromlackof resourcesorfromthenotionthatpropagandaisnot importantinthemodernworld?
ItissaidinminoritycirclesthattheCatholic Pressisnotinterestingandthatifitlacksreaders ithasonlyitselftoblame.Wehaveinvestigated thiscomplaintwithsomecareandfoundthatit usuallyemanatesfrompeoplewhodon'tbotherto readthepaperstheycriticise.Atthesametimeit maybeconfessedwithoutanyembarrassmentatall that,generallyspeaking,ourCatholicPressisnot asattractiveasitshouldbe,atleastfromtheangle oftechnicalpresentation.Itisprobablynecessary toremindCatholicreadersoftheirweekliesinat leastfourStatesthatwhattheycriticiseisthework ofaone-manliterarystaffwho,ifheisnotoverworked,isnotinfrequentlyunderpaid.Toproduce anewspaperinitsentirety,withaninfinitenumber, ofdistractingtasks,isaprojectinwhichpityshould havealargersharethanblame.
Itisincontestablethatmoremoneyneedstobe spentontheCatholicPress,specificallyinthe directionofemployingmorestaffandgivingthem reasonableeconomicprospects.Theinitialfinancial burdenwouldberecoupedinmeasurabletimeby theimprovedstandardsofourpaperswhchwould inturnadvancetheircirculations-andinfluence. Thereisacase,too,forarevaluationofourpress methods.Itbecomesmoreandmoredoubtful whethertheapproachoflogicanddiscursive reasoningishavngitseffectinaworldwhere sensationsseemtobethespurtoaction.Buteven ifourpressshouldbecomemoretabloidand"lowbrow"thereisalimittoliberalisation.Andinthat marginthesecularpressalwayshastheadvantage inbeingconstantlywillingtopandertowhatislow andbase.

In1950,whenBritainand Irelanddecidedtoraise theirdiplomaticrepresentationtoambassadorialrank, hebecamethefirstIrish AmbassadorinLondon.He retiredafewmonthslater.

Itwasthetimewhentheworldwasstartled bythenewsthattheOxfordUniversityDebatingSocietyhodsupportedamotion"not tofightagainforKingandCountry."Herewasthepickofthe youngergenerationofGreat Britain-oncemistressof theworld-officiallywarningitscontemporariesthat itwasnolongerinterested indefendingbyarmsthe greatcivilisationwhichit hadinheritedfromaglorioushistory.
TheCommunistsand Fasciststookheartatthis strangenews.Thedemocracies,theythought,had collapsedintodefeatismand cowardice.

Itwouldbefoundthat Catholicswishingtomarry non-Catholicswouldbring alongtheirfriendstosuch aclasswithexcellentresults.Whereverinthe UnitedStatesofAmerica suchcentreshadbeendevelopedtheyhaddoubled andtrebledthenumberof converts. Thisreportwasmadeby FatherAntonio Rivas. O.F.M.,arepresentativeof theCustodianoftheHoly Land,ontheeveofareturnvisithereoftheCross ofPeacewhichcontainsa relicoftheTrueCross.
Thecrosswasduetobe broughtherefromVenezuela.Itfirstcameto MexicoinJanuary,1950, whenitwasveneratedby morethan500,000faithful.
Onthreedistinctoccasions.ahugecrosshasappearedintheskyduring thetouroftheCrossof Peace,andthephenomena hasbeenphotographed, FatherRivasdeclared.
