Speakingfromthetext: "Giveusthisdayourdaily bread,"FatherLewissaid thatitwasinthespiritof thosewordstheyhadassembledaroundGod'saltar thatmorning.

Firmswouldpaybigmoney forthatsnappy,brief,but tellingformofadvertisementwhichwascalleda slogan.

Duringthedaythey wouldrejoice,togetherwith theirfellowcitizensinthe recognitionofthosenatural rights,longdenied,andwon atsuchcost.Butfirst,they cametoGod.

Theiractionwasindeed ofitselfimportant,butmore importantstillwasitsimplicationormeaning.Gratitudewasavirtueappreciatedbyallmen.Theirpresencetherewasanactof gratitudetoGod.

Bymakingitthefirst actionoftheircelebration ofLabourDay,theyproclaimedtotheworldthat whateverofgoodhadcome theirway,wasdueinthe firstplacetoAlmightyGod, theirFatherinHeaven.

ConstantMind

Comingastheydidfrom officesandfactories,from shopsandstores,fromthe dockyardsandmanual labour,theyshowedthat theAustralianworkman wasindebtedtoGodforthe advantagesheenjoyedand theycametothankHim.

Atthesametime,being reasonablemen,theyrealisedthattheiractionwhich occupiedsolittletimeonce ayearcouldbebutanexpressionofamindthat mustbeconstantevery momentofeverydayof everyyear.

Theyrealisedthat,isolatedfromtheireverydaylife andthought,ithadbut littlemeaning.Consequently,asreasonablemen,they naturallyaskedthemselves howtokeepaliveandactive themindorthoughtfrom whichtheiractionsprang.

Advertisingusedtobea businessman'sservant, continuedFatherLewis.

Herememberedabusin Londonwhichcarriedonone sidetheslogan"Guinness isgoodforyou"andonthe other"Bassisbetter."But therewasinrealitynothing moredangerousthanasloganbecauseitusuallycontainedonlyahalf-truth, whichastheyknew,was moreinsidousthanawhole lie.

AsCatholicsinmodern societytheywerefaced withasloganwhichwon almostuniversalacceptance butwhichwas,infact,at therootofallsocialills. "Religionisonethingand lifeisanother."

Theyhadhearditand, perhaps,asitsdevisersintended,hadn'tgivenitmuch thought.Thatwasthepur-

TheprogressisdueprincipallytoBishopPaul TaguchiofOsaka,who circledtheglobeafew yearsagoinquestofnew missionariesforhisdiocese. PARIS,Feb.26-StateaidtoCatholic schools,amajorissueinFrance'srecent cabinetcrisis,appearslikelytocontinue underthenewgovernmentheadedbyPremierEdgarFaure.

ThenewPremier,confirmedbytheNationalAssemblybyavoteof369to 210,waselectedwiththe supportofthepro-Catholic parties-thePopularRepublicans(M.R.P.)andthe Independents.Onlythe CommunistsandSocialists -bitterenemiesofaidto -opposed him.

Thepresenceofmany outstandingCatholicsinthe cabinetisafurtherguaranteethatthegovernmentwillproposenolegislation hostiletoCatholiceducationalinterests.

BeforetheAssemblyconfirmedhim,theSocialists triedtoembarrassthenew Premier,amemberofthe traditionallyanti-clerical RadicalSocialistParty,by raisingtheschoolissue.Mr. Faure,however,replied thattheissueis"apoisonedarrow"whichhaslongbeen hamperingthesolutionof vitalpolitical.economicand socialproblems.

Tojudgefromthenobleforestsofpinewhichare beingwantonlydestroyedtoprovidepulpforthe printingofsexmagazines,cruecomics,tosay nothingoftheoutpouringsoftheCommunistPress andofthemultifarioussects,theCatholicoutput" isaverymildandcircumscribedaffair.Butitis notenoughtolamentthisasafact.Itisnecessary toenquirewhy,inviewofournumbersand influenceinthecommunityitshouldbeso.Doesit springfromignorance,fromapathy,fromlackof resourcesorfromthenotionthatpropagandaisnot importantinthemodernworld?

ItissaidinminoritycirclesthattheCatholic Pressisnotinterestingandthatifitlacksreaders ithasonlyitselftoblame.Wehaveinvestigated thiscomplaintwithsomecareandfoundthatit usuallyemanatesfrompeoplewhodon'tbotherto readthepaperstheycriticise.Atthesametimeit maybeconfessedwithoutanyembarrassmentatall that,generallyspeaking,ourCatholicPressisnot asattractiveasitshouldbe,atleastfromtheangle oftechnicalpresentation.Itisprobablynecessary toremindCatholicreadersoftheirweekliesinat leastfourStatesthatwhattheycriticiseisthework ofaone-manliterarystaffwho,ifheisnotoverworked,isnotinfrequentlyunderpaid.Toproduce anewspaperinitsentirety,withaninfinitenumber, ofdistractingtasks,isaprojectinwhichpityshould havealargersharethanblame.

Itisincontestablethatmoremoneyneedstobe spentontheCatholicPress,specificallyinthe directionofemployingmorestaffandgivingthem reasonableeconomicprospects.Theinitialfinancial burdenwouldberecoupedinmeasurabletimeby theimprovedstandardsofourpaperswhchwould inturnadvancetheircirculations-andinfluence. Thereisacase,too,forarevaluationofourpress methods.Itbecomesmoreandmoredoubtful whethertheapproachoflogicanddiscursive reasoningishavngitseffectinaworldwhere sensationsseemtobethespurtoaction.Buteven ifourpressshouldbecomemoretabloidand"lowbrow"thereisalimittoliberalisation.Andinthat marginthesecularpressalwayshastheadvantage inbeingconstantlywillingtopandertowhatislow andbase.

In1950,whenBritainand Irelanddecidedtoraise theirdiplomaticrepresentationtoambassadorialrank, hebecamethefirstIrish AmbassadorinLondon.He retiredafewmonthslater.

ThemissionoftheCatholicPressisnolessthan themissionoftheChurchitself-toteachthetruths ofChristtobelieversastotheunregenerateworld. Whileteachingatthe medicalschoolofNagasaki University,hedidresearch workonradiationandits applicationtothetreatment ofdiseasedtissues.Hebecamearecognisedauthority inthisfield.

Dr.Nagai'sdeepspiritof faithpermeatedeverymomentofhislife.Whattime hecouldsparefromwork attheUniversitywasdevotedtocharitablework withtheSt.VincentdePaul Society.BothDr.Nagai andhiswifeweremembers oftheThirdOrderofSt. Francis.

Theatomicbomb,which devastatedNagasakionAug. 9,1945,killedMrs.Nagai, butfortunatelytheirtwo childrenwereevacuated fromthecityatthetime.

WhenDr.Nagaisearched theruinsoftheirhomefor tracesofhiswife,allhe foundweresomecharred bonesandthecrucifixand partofthechainofher rosary.

Herewasthepickofthe youngergenerationofGreat Britain-oncemistressof theworld-officiallywarningitscontemporariesthat itwasnolongerinterested indefendingbyarmsthe greatcivilisationwhichit hadinheritedfromaglorioushistory.

TheCommunistsand Fasciststookheartatthis strangenews.Thedemocracies,theythought,had collapsedintodefeatismand cowardice.

Gusandthanklesstasks. ThefirstLegionariessought outthemostwretchedand degradedandwerestill lookingaftertheminthe hostels.Theyoughttoseek outthemostspiritually destitute,thenon-Catholic, especiallythechurchless non-Catholic, and the lapsed.

Othersagainweretoo timidtoentertheLegion ranks.Theyprotestedthat theywerenotholyenough, asiftheasoptolatewerethe monopolyofsaints.They mustrememberthatthe laymanwasnomoreexcusedfromtheapostolate becausehewasasinner thanhewasexcusedfrom attendingSundayMassif hewasinmortalsin.

Itwasindeedpitiable Catholicswithcenturiesof traditionintheFaithwere afraidtodowhatwas achieved by primitive peoplesinNewGuineaor Africaorbyrecentconverts inChina.

Theywouldnotneglect theyoungsoexposedto temptation-gentlyinducing themtokeepinclosetouch withthegreatsacramental sourcesoftheChristianlife. Withthelargeandcontinuinginfluxofmigrants withtheirspecialneedsand problemsinsettlinginto newsurroundingstherewas needfortheLegionto organisespeciallyintheir regard.Handbooksand otherLegionliteraturein thevariouslanguagesshould beeverathandforthe nationalchaplainsandaid shouldbegiventhemIn settinguppraesidiawhich wouldbeahelptothem;in theirwork.

Intheparishesaneffort shouldbemadetorecruit newAustraliansintoLegion membership.Pairsofvisitorscomposedofanewand oldAustraliancoulddoexcellentworkvisitingnew Australianstointerestthem intheparish,welcomethem toMassandintoparish organisationsandinduce themtosendtheirchildren totheCatholicschool.

GreatWorldForce

EachCatholicshouldreflectthattherewassome soulthatperhapswouldnot hesavedwithouthishelp. Suchwasthemysterious wayofDivineProvidence thatJesusandMarydependedonthemintheir workofsavingsouls.

Theworkforthechurchlessmassesaroundthem wasparamount.Ifitwas notattempted,thecommand ofChristtoteachallnations wasneglectedandthen theycouldnotexpectHis blessingontheirlives.If itwasnotattempted,therequirementsofthe Church'sCanonLawwere notcarriedout(Can.1350).

RegularInquiryClass

Theywouldcontinueto usetheirtriedmethodof directapostolateofindividualtoindividual,going fromdoortodoor,orotherwiseseekingouttheindividualasChristsoughtthe lostsheep.Todothaton agrandscaleastheydesired,andasthevastnessof theharvestrequired,they musthavemanyLegionaries,notjustsixortenin aparishofperhapsseveral thousandCatholics,butan army,inorderthatMary wouldbeablethroughthem tomothersouls,andChrist's greatfinalcommandto preachthegospeltoevery creaturewouldbefulfilled.

HisExcellencyappealed toCatholicstojointhe LegionofMaryinlarge numbers.Theywerecalled bytheirBaptismandConfirmationtobeapostles. Thatwasabasicanduniversaldutyinsistedonby thePopes.Thefailurein thatdutywasleavingthe worldawilderness.

Theyshouldleadontheir apostlestoadeepspiritual lifeofunionwithMary,to shareherfaith,herhumility,hercourage,herselfsacrificingloveofGod.They shouldnotbeafraidtoentrusttotheirLegionaries theworkofhelpingthemin thesalvationofsouls.They shouldgivethemplentyto do,andspurthemonto sacrificeandtolferoism,insistingonloyaltywhilstencouraginginitiative.

Hencetheyshouldhelp theirzealousprieststoset upasitwereacatechumenateineveryparish.The centreofthatshouldbea regularinquiryclass. Whereverthatwassetupit wouldbefoundmostfruitful.Theycouldcanvass amongstmixedmarriage familiesforitandbring alongCatholicswishingto deepentheirknowledgeof thefaithorthosewhohad haddefectiveinstruction.

Itwouldbefoundthat Catholicswishingtomarry non-Catholicswouldbring alongtheirfriendstosuch aclasswithexcellentresults.Whereverinthe UnitedStatesofAmerica suchcentreshadbeendevelopedtheyhaddoubled andtrebledthenumberof converts. SuchworkfornonCatholicswouldbefoundto haveatoniceffectonthe Catholicbodywhowould realisetheybelongedtoa conqueringapostolicChurch

Thisreportwasmadeby FatherAntonio Rivas. O.F.M.,arepresentativeof theCustodianoftheHoly Land,ontheeveofareturnvisithereoftheCross ofPeacewhichcontainsa relicoftheTrueCross.

Thecrosswasduetobe broughtherefromVenezuela.Itfirstcameto MexicoinJanuary,1950, whenitwasveneratedby morethan500,000faithful.

Onthreedistinctoccasions.ahugecrosshasappearedintheskyduring thetouroftheCrossof Peace,andthephenomena hasbeenphotographed, FatherRivasdeclared.
